He can also understand that Mr. Krabs is doing something wrong and doesn't usually act out-of-character. Seasons 9B-13 are solid imo.

I loved the old episodes best because Squidward had proper depth: he didn't actually *_hate_* SpongeBob, he was just easily irritated by him (because Squidward is almost always plagued with stress and dissatisfaction). Even beyond his childishness, SpongeBob's optimism and enthusiasm _also_ annoyed 'ward since it reminded him of what he didn't have. In Band Geeks, SpongeBob tries his best to help, and you can tell Squidward appreciates his efforts. In the Squilliam/Restaurant episode, Squidward seems actually concerned for SpongeBob's health and wellbeing as he begins to break down mentally. Most of all, Squidward genuinely seeks forgiveness in the April Fool's episode when his dopamine wears off and he realises how unnecessary his prank was. He's just a minimum-wage cashier at a fast food restaurant who wishes he were a successful artist, constantly reminded of his failures by the optimism from the young coworker who genuinely considers him one of his best friends.
