      If the $70 million were guaranteed, Danny Hurley would have already bought a home in LA. He knows that he can easily be fired by the Lakers whereas he has lifetime job security at Connecticut, especially since his teams will always finish toward the top of the Big East.

      If you received an opportunity to interview and then received an offer, wouldn't you like to hear it before making an informed decision? Yes, it was an easy decision for Dan Hurley to stay at UConn but why shouldn't he have interviewed for the Lakers HC job.

    • @scene.objects
      @scene.objects 3 месяца назад +9

      To be fair, this got him a better college deal, can create more buy in from recruits (though this might be a double edged sword), and certainly scratches the ego. Also sets the stage for a Knicks interview in a few years. Harbaugh did this a couple of times at Michigan, I'd say it worked out for him. Lastly, the two do not have to be mutually exclusive; I'm sure he'd like to coach in the NBA and 3peat, got to explore all opportunities when they're presented then make the best decision for right now.

    The Lakers were half hearted in the offer and were not all-in. I am a recruiter by profession and if you are going to poach a “happy executive” in his/her current company, the number should be significant and hard to refuse for his/her to leave. I mean they have to take in consideration the family setup, the moving of things, the uncertainty. The Lakers should’ve asked Hurley’s “least offer number” and by that they would know if he really interested. And also Dan knows that his value is so high now but there will always be a “number” that he and his family can’t refuse.

    It was a LOW BALL offer. The $70 million would not have made him even a top 5 coach in the NBA, from a year to year salary standpoint. And there would have been no control over the personnel, with an expectation that just making the playoffs every year, and even the Conference Finals, would not guarantee that you would have a job in 3 years. I love the Lakers, but management's expectations are just TOO high for any coach to succeed there right now.

    So Dan used the Laker Job to squeeze more Money from UConn. So this is the type of person that we are supposed to respect.

  • @kf4778
    @kf4778 3 месяца назад

    If it were about the money you would've heard that Hurley made a counteroffer and the Lakers turned him down. That wasn't reported. It wasn't about the money. The stage was too big and the lights were too bright in LA. Most people didn't even know his name until he was attached to the Lakers, and it dominated the sports headlines. He could eventually make the same money in College without all the intense pressure from coaching here.

    I never thought he would take the job. Hurley got a lot of publicity for his brand and the UConn program from this story. Lakers demonstrated to Klutch Sports that they're not going to rubber stamp their desires moving forward.

    Let's be honest with ourselves. That contract offer was NOT for Hurley's security!
    How likely do you really think he was gonna make it to his contract year (yr 5)?

    So, the story is that hurley turned down the Lakers because of the Low-Ball Offer. I would suggest that Hurley turned down the offer when he discovered there would be no Co-Ed's at the Laker facility at the industrial park in El Segundo. Hurley like his Pop loves the campus life.

    This was the most flagrant play of woj and him trying to upgrade his salary at UConn, if you want a good raise just throw the names lakers and lebron in there and you'll be just fine

  • @madboyreadynow28
    @madboyreadynow28 3 месяца назад

    This was a simple decision. Hurley knew what we all knew. He would be fired in a year or 2. So why risk a sure thing for something that was not promising. The Lakers have not had a head coach for more than 2 years for many years. Pop has been in San Antonio for almost 25 years. Hire a coach and let the man do his job. I don’t blame him for staying at UConn.

    Only the Lakers can make headlines during the middle of the NBA Finals because a college coach turned down their job offer. 😅😅 Gotta love it. That being said Lakers just had a real reality check that the job is no longer as prestigious as you think, there is work to do as an organization when college coaches are turning down 70 million dollar deals to coach your team.

    That $70M is nothing compared to what he will get over decades at UCONN, especially if he 3-peats. LA needed to offer $100M+ to pry him away from building a legacy. He has a golden ticket at UCONN for the next 20 years. They lowballed him because college coaches who win multiple chips get to write their own destiny, see Coach K or Roy Williams. Dr. Buss would have spared no expense.

    Woj helped Hurley get a pay increase with UCON, this was well orchestrated by the Hurley family and WoJ ...Lakers need to learn from all these recent stories being "Leaked " which is leading others to get pay increases and extentions #leverage for all.

    I am not sure he was the right coach for the Lakers anyway. I feel if UNC would not have had that setback against Alabama, they would have won it this year
