Finally found someone using these lenses for video - and they are as amazing as I suspected. Thanks. Love how much the subject pops from the background compared to the Sigma.
Very useful, quality content! The Lens Rentals Blog is extraordinary. As for other VM lenses, I've also been looking at the new 21mm and newish 40mm and those wides work well across FF/APSC/M43/N1/Q A comparison between the 35mm II and III might be interesting, as the new one is much lighter so it would be interesting to see if it retains the same qualities or goes in a new direction. Thanks!
Fellow Citizen Phillip Reeves blog talks in depth about that lens as well. Pretty much smaller and lighter. Pretty similar quality. I’m curious if the aberrations and vignetting would be less intense and if the center of the image is a little sharper wide open. Thanks for commenting and watching.
I have the 21 f1.4 in M mount, use it on the S1, and I LOVE that lens. It might be my favorite Voigtlander I have (all Noktons... 21mm f1.4, 35mm f1.2 II, 75mm f1.5)
@@nickharris5231 Which can you recommend? I want to start with 2 lenses. Which to avoid? I think they might be the perfect fit because you can adapt to almost every mirrorless and they have a character. Was looking at Sigma lenses etc and real Cine lenses and Voigtländer might be the perfect hybrid. Do you still have other lenses?
Amazing, these look like what a Canon Cine Sumire lens would look like soft and dreamy wide open, swirly bokeh but sharp at same time. Those are 7k+! Tons of character and it flares just like a cinema lens. The caveat is that very few cinematographers know about this loop hole. Saving tons of money on a more compact, way less expensive with the same high end characteristics. I’ll even go out on a limb here that they are very similar to the Leica Summicron C’s! 🤫
We ended up keeping the 75 and use it in almost all our films. Just filmed 1 wedding with these lenses which are in the examples but aren't able to post that full wedding.
Brilliant review. Thank you. I have a set of Sigma Art glass but a long time lover of the Voigtlander MFT lenses. Same deal as you, now shooting on an S1. May I ask what LUT you used on this video? It is beautiful. Is the Gamut linked one?
It is! The V-Log conversion LUT from Gamut is what I used. I have updated that LUT for more accurate colors so it looks even more accurate and dialed in.
I love my Voigtlander lenses. I actually have the 35 and 75 you used in this vid. Waiting on a few more jobs to come through before I get the 50. One thing you didnt talk about which is a big deal for video work is focus breathing. The 75 has it pretty bad, but Im wondering about the 50 on that regard.
I did that test but had trouble finding a way to include it into this review that was already getting pretty long. overall, the 75 has the most intense focus breathing. It is much less noticeable on the 50 and 35. 35 has the least, then 50, then 75 which is the worst. Hope that helps.
Hi, I use gh5 + voigtlander lenses And I'm thinking about diffusion filters for that filmic look. But.... I have heard that Voigtlander already has some nice diffusion inherent to it. And that may be preferable for the gh5 because of inverse sensor reflections at night. What do you think, is it really needed these diffusion filters for such lenses? And do you use them?
Thanks so much guys! As always amazing content 🔥🎥 In which parts of the wedding do you use the primes instead of the zoom (24-105, 18-35...)? Portraits, cocktail hour and party maybe?
Hi there, sorry I haven't updated the description. That LUT is no longer available as it has gone through multiple reiterations and constant updates. Honestly, this LUT in this video is not as consistent and reliable as the new updated one is as I have had multiple years tweaking and working with tons of other footage. Because of the constant updates, it has been moved out of Beta to a purchased product. Sorry for the miscommunication on my description.
I tried the 75mm 1.5 which is an absolutely lovely lens with a unique buttery smooth look, but i fount the focusing to be a pain in the rear on more than portrait distances due to the very short throw it has beyond 3 meters or so. shame they dont do this lens in a cine housing with longer focus throw. would buy it in an instant.
Can you make one of these videos for the mft voigtlanders? I haven't found anything more indepth from a wedding filmmakers perspective other than Forestry's cursory look. It would mean a lot if that were possible! Thanks for all the great info 👍🏼
As someone who has used the Voigtlander Noktons for seven or eight years, I can tell you that they provide a reliable way to get classic rendering in modern, high quality lenses. Focus rings are super smooth and permit high precision focus pulls. They are all a bit glowy at f0.95, but clean up by f1.2. The 25 and 42.5 allow very close focus, giving you dreamy close ups of bridal make up, rings and jewelry, etc. They all have 58mm filter threads except the 25, which is easily solved with a step up ring. The MFT Noktons are a secret weapon for getting an uncommon and yet classic look. Everything looks so organic.
@@NolanGunn You're welcome. Watch some videos made with them and you'll see a characteristic look that they have. I think they are very suited to weddings as they produce a very gentle organic look without sacrificing sharpness. Everything about the image says vintage glass, but without vintage glass pitfalls like fungus, excessive veiling flare, stiff focus rings etc. They have longer focus throws as you get to closer focus, so achieving precision for ring shots or hair/makeup is easy.
there is no way to compete with perfection and sharpness of sigma glass. if that is what ur looking for for some people that is boring and without character! then. go for old, vintage lenses like takumars, helios, voigtlanders and leica. it deppends of what ur looking for! great review man!
Hi, I recently buy Panasonic S5, iam looking for wide angle lens for it like 14 or 16mm for my wedding video and photography. Plz help me and let me know ur choice.
Click this link and check out the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 L mount lens. This is our favorite wide lens with that camera we recommend! kit.co/whiteinrevery/panasonic-cameras-for-wedding-videographers-by-white-in-revery
Neat looking lenses. Not sure there's a huge enough difference in the look for me to justify adding them to my collection or renting them since I've got the Sigmas and they are nice clean lenses that are great for most of what I do. But I do love the look even though it's very subtle in how it's different from the Sigmas. It renders skin tones very nice.
Great review. While not as sharp, the Voightlanders look more pleasant and interesting than the sigma. For narrative work the Voightlander would be the better decision, while maybe for a commercial depicting inanimate objects the Sigma would do.
Just a sugestion . When I read "vintage Voigtlander lens " I expect a old German lens , not a new lens built by Cosina that has a vintage look . I am a fan of the Cosina/Voigtlander lenses too. I sugest you just call then Voigtlander lenses.
Quarantine beard coming in strong 💪
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson getting a trim today. Haha

Nice work man. I have a Voigtlander 40mm f/2 pancake for EF mount. It's gorgeous, and tiny.
Heck yeah dude!! I'm building a vintage Zeiss Superspeed lineup and considered this route instead. Super informative!

You really know the lenses and how to use those well. Thank you for sharing all these insightful thoughts!

Solid review Calen! That Voigt 75 is so tempting 😍
It’s my favorite lens. Every picture is beautiful
Great review. Really insightful! I’ve got a set of Zeiss manual lenses which I like using. 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. Looking forward to more videos!
Can you tell me the exact model? Contax Zeiss?
She pretty at every focal length, lol. Nice video man. I just discovered your channel and love the content and the energy.
Thanks for following along!
Thank you for making this! Love using the S1 for my vids and films, and really appreciate your insights!
Great review! Did you shoot any weddings with these lenses yet?
We ended up keeping the 75 and use it in almost all our films. Just filmed 1 wedding with these lenses which are in the examples but aren't able to post that full wedding.
Great Video! Love the look of the Voigtlander lenses!
I own the Voigt 58 and use it on my D700 Nikon. Best lens I had ever owned and used. Images are 3D.
Please make a comparison between Canon FD and other older glass like voigtlander lenses on Panasonic Cameras S5, S1, GH5
Curious if you had a chance to check the focus breathing on the Voigtlander?
At 6:03 the same issue is seen which I also observed with my CV lenses - the black paint comes easily off by touching the focus ring.
Wow! That 75mm is beyond amazing! 😍
it's our favorite!

V-Log with our conversion LUT from Gamut. Check out geni.us/gamutV-Log

Hello. Is it possible to install voigtlander 15mm f4.5 on panasonic s1?
Hi ! With the spec leak from Lumix S5, do you think it better & cheaper option to buy S5 instead S1 for wedding filmmaking ?
No. As of July 2021 the S1 is better, especially after the firmware update in April. It’s far better built too
How do you feel about mitakon lenses ?
Haven’t tried them out yet.
Do you use black mist filters for weddings?
not a lot. we have in the past though for a few weddings.

Hoping that sigma would come up with a line of vintage-like lenses, with their autofocus tech. They did it with their classic prime cinema lense,
I don't even own an S1 and I watched this all the way through lol.
Man these look great
Being a leica m mount lens, is it possible to adapt to GH5 via EF to M43 Speedbooster?
You can use an EF to M43 adapter but that won't work for M mount lenses. You would need a M to M43 adapter.
Thank you for the great review.
