In today's farm vlog, we are harvesting the pinkeye purple hull peas we planted a couple months ago. Purple hull peas are by far our favorite vegetable to grow & to eat in the garden. The purple hull pea is a staple in the south & goes best with a fresh onion & hot cornbread!
After harvesting the pinkeye purple hulls, we are going to get to use my grandfather's antique pea sheller. This vintage pea sheller makes life so much easier & the way it works is that it has an electric motor that turns a belt, & that turns a pulley, & that turns 2 rollers which the peas go through, & it is just enough pressure to pop the pea out, without smashing them.
I love that this was handbuilt for my grandfather 75 years ago, and now it has been passed down to me & my family to use, & I can then pass it down to MaryCarl, our daughter when it is time.
Thanks yall for today's family vlog, & hope you have the BEST day ever & keep dancing!

What a blast from the past! I was my uncle's house near lake okeechobee shelling black eyed peas. I went inside only to find out my cousins were taking me to Lion Country Safari. Well, I was so excited I bolted out the door, couldn't stop and got my finger caught in the large pulley. 100 stitches to save my finger tip. This was back in 1966!
Love purple hull peas also like the antique pea sheller. Have a good day guys...........Sharon
Thanks!! 😊
My Granny had us kids to shell peas and shuck corn. We sat on her big porch with newspapers in our laps to put the shells and bowls for peas. She taught us so many things while working. Good memories
Love your grand daddy's antique pea sheller!
Oh my! I gotta have one of those. Amazing. Our generation don’t hold a candle to our grands generation
That is an awesome contraption! The Hoss Harvesting bucket is very good but, the finger knives were better! LOL Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome :)
fantastic harvest of peas guys !!and a fabulous bit of antique machinery
It’s so awesome
That finger blade thing is an awesome idea!
Pea shellers are awesome, but the memories of sitting on the porch shelling peas and snapping beans with a passel of aunts, grandmother and cousins sure creates good memories.
Black eyed peas have to be at the top of my fav veggies list (but really, how do you pick a favorite out of all the summer time delicious freshness? Vine ripened tomatoes, sweet yellow squash, green onions, okra, fresh pesto made with homegrown basil and garlic served over spaghetti squash...) Anyway, my son was about 3 years old and sitting on a kitchen counter helping me make dinner. He did something that made me stop and hug him and tell him he was my absolute favorite blue eyed boy. He replied that I was his favorite black eyed peas eyed mom. So yeah, we ate them a lot. LOL! Thanks for bringing those wonderful memories up.
Yes!!!!
The best of memories!
Loving Mrs. Cog Hill - "move them big ole clodhoppers out the way" - LOL - Y'all stay good!
LOL, TY!
Mrs Cog is awesome
That’s cool. What would be better is a quart bag of them pink eyes in my crockpot along with some cornbread in the oven. 🤔😉
Shut yo mouff!!!! Lawd yes, & that is what we've eaten all week!!
I AM AN ANTIQUE PEA SHELLER! LOL! I loved this video.
😂😂😂😂
Hi..... Thank you 🏡🎥👍👍👍
Great
Video
Thank you!
That old technology is cool. It's amazing to me that it doesn't just squish them. Who needs electronics anyway! hahaha
Exactly!
lOVE THOSE FLAGS!
Thx John
Cool machine, wish they still made these.👍👍
Ain’t that the truth! Thx John
Now I want a big bowl of those peas!
LOL!!!
Hey! That thing is really somethin! Very cool!
It dang sure is!! Thx, Jason
That pea hauler makes easy work but my suggestion is for the pea shells is to have a wide mouth bucket or a box under where they come out to catch them so your lovely wife doesn't have to clean up after you haha. Larry
😊 Lol, what happened was we started shelling before we put a box down there to catch them. Thanks Larry!!-Jason
Purple hulls are going crazy in my garden. I've got to get that hoss bucket. My grandfather gave me his peasheller before he past away. Someone stole it and my chainsaw out of my shed. Oh, Jason move those clodhoppers!!😂😂
Oh noooooo, I am so sorry about your sheller!!!!! Thanks guys!!
That pea sheller was awesome ! Never seen one before. Nice to have something that was your Grandfathers.
Thanks Rick!!!!
Pretty darn cool. Made my mouth water!
Thanks Andy!!!
I absolutely love all the whimsy all around your wonderful homestead ❤️👍
Thanks Vickie!!! 😊😊😊
That is so awesome!
Thanks Linda!!!
okay that was so cool!!!!!!!!!!!! I want one of those antique pea shellers!!!!!!! well first I need to plant peas! but still...
😊❤️
That's a cool contraption!
TY!
That was amazing
Thanks you!!!
Jason, that thing is great!
Thanks buddy!!!
Be proud of those weeds! They're protecting the ground from drying out, and looking after your peas. I know people are proud of their weedless gardens, but they always look so naked to me. I was really chuffed to see weeds in your video. And what a harvest of peas! Such an amazing antique, that still works wonders, shelling them too.
LUV
You are really an incredible nice person and nice family. I would enjoy once to meet your grandpa and parents to see where this personality come from. I guess your wife is a very nice person to make this could be. I hope my english is understandable. I really enjoy to pass these few minutes with you guys. Take care.
That was cool. Thanks.
Thanks! -Jason

I SO want one of those pea shellers! Such a gem! And, yes, purple peas are my favorite! Yum!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
😮 that thing is amazing! I need one! I don’t grow many peas because it takes foreeeeevaaa to get the peas out of the shell.
😊
What! Neat!
👍👍👍
Cool beans!
Thanks!
I heard Brooke,,,, there’s our sassy girl ❤
That's a nifty gaget! The double rollers remind me of those old school wash wringers. 😃👍 Really nice harvest of that crop!
Thanks Nicole!
awesome bit of equipment!
Thanks!!
How cool is THAT‽ It really made shelling those peas easier - or at least it looked like it did. Yay, Granddad!
:)))))
Danny from Deep South found parts of something similar in his old barn. I shared this video on his site, but can you send him so.e photos of your pea shelter? He wants to rebuild it! I just love your videos!❤
HI guys enjoyed the video as always, till the next video God bless everyone 👋 bye. 🌿🌿🌱🌱🌱
Thanks Athea!!! 😊
Cog Hill Farm -The Dancing Farmer you're welcome 😍🌱🌱🌱
That machine is so cool. Simple, effective and made to Last
Your antique huller reminds me if my mom's washing machine wringer in the early sixties. It looked like a hybrid of the Featherman and your huller.
And I’m thinking that is what those rollers are from. This sheller is def homemade & I bet back then, they used whatever they could get their hands on. Thanks Jessie
Jessie Ramos my Granny Day used a wringer like that to shell peas. She would wash collards in the washer.
My Grandad converted a ringer washing machine to pea sheller. I am sure it is stuck in one of the old barns. I really like that one you got though.
Omg that would be awesome if you found it! Thanks guys!
That is so neat.
Too Cool - Thanks for showing that awesome machine. Take'em Easy!
Thanks Sam!
Have you tried cooking whole okra while cooking your purple hull peas? Even if you don't eat or like okra your peas will have a great richness. Okra is also good cooked on crowder peas or dark butter beans. Thanks for your videos.
Oh yeah! We sure do 😉
be a zinnia..LOVE it
Yes 🌸 :)
Nice👍

:)
Hey Jason! Great video as always I got all my supplies to run my own water lines I'll let you know how it goes!
BOOOOM!!!!! I am supposed to start running lines to the butcher shop this weekend too! Thanks & def keep me updated-Jason
You should have left those on the ground , Peaches would have cleaned them up! lol Loved the vintage pea shucker! Thanks for sharing.
Funny you say that, bc I actually fed them to the guinea hogs :) -Jason
Niccce
I saw in another video that you have a creek on your property,do you use or ( have you thought about) using a ram pump to bring water from the creek to a 275 gal. tote to water your garden and animals? It could save you money and time .Enjoy your vlog-Jerry
We have...and I actually recently acquired a pump, & hopefully when we start working the bank of the creek, I can install it as well. Thanks!!!-Jason
#awesomeness I want a creek with a ram pump.
Awesome harvest!
Thanks Greg!
As you were picking you could have played everybody was Kung Fu Fighting.
Great video as always
HAHAHAHAHAH
Love me some peas! Will you can or freeze them? I think I'll can mine this year.
Thx Kathy! We typically freeze ours, & mainly bc it is just easier & more convenient for us-Thanks, Jason :)
Be a zinnia! I think that's awesome advice. I'm sure the store bought canned purple hull peas that I've had are nothing compared to the cog hill homegrown version! When's dinner lol? Love and God bless :o)
😊❤️ thanks True Joy!!
That is sooooo awesome!!! .... we want one!! :) Now, how are you going to use those peas....?!?!?!? Thanks for sharing!
Are these black eyed peas? Love them. Hugs to the family❤️
They are...thanks :)
Are those called black-eyed peas to us west coasters? Really cool! Love y'all! Your daughter is so cute!
Pretty much :) thanks buddy!!!
Beecozz7 that is what we called them in Texas as well. Not sure how the name changed between Alabama and Texas.
Beecozz7 They are actually two difference things. Purple Hull peas aren't as well know as the black eyed peas but are a close cousins to them. A lot of people think the purple hull peas have a much better taste. My family loves them.
Not a buddy, I'm a buddette ;-)
Great video! ......I wonder if you could use the wringer part on an old wringer washing machine ......??.... it's a thought........
That maybe what that is...sure what it looks like & this thing is homemade
My fiancée says you should have a new t-shirt with “When you’re surrounded by ochre and weeds, be a Zinnia”
AWESOME...will def keep that on the back burner!!
Next time I am stuck in traffic - I am going to be a zinnia
LOL YES!!! :)
Debbie Bittner Ha! Made me chuckle out loud. Will have to try it next time the goat breaks into the garden.
Exactly the time to be a zinnia!
That makes me hungry for peas. 75 years old and still working isn't it getting the job done.
❤️❤️❤️
Danny and Wanda at deep south homestead recently found an old sheller in a barn and they are not sure what is is, or, who made it. It is in pieces and will need to be rebuilt. Someone in the comments mentioned this Cog Hill Video for a reference to see their old pea sheller in action.
Good video thanks.
Do you and Mrs Cog Hill Farm have a nice pantry? Do you can much of what you grow?
Wow you got a bunch of them,we'll done playboy
👍👍👍👍👍
Question, did you find that the bucket part of the Hoss collector got in your way as you picked? Did the finger cutters really work? I have never had those peas but they look good. Love the sheller. How awesome.
The Hoss bucket has been great & no issues. I just used it to pick figs and it a life saver & the finger cutters really did work. :)
Takes a long time to get to see the pea sheller
Your slacking on the dancing! Farmer part ,wow them there Are alot of peas.👍
Def slacking!!
Such a priceless feeling, using something that has been in your family family so long. Glad y'all were able to find and use it. Don't see them decently priced nowadays so my fingers are the only sheller my peas see lol. Do you have to adjust for different sides peas?
❤❤❤❤❤
Hey Jason what kind of peas are those? , I always thought that peas were green yours are purple what's up with that ?...
Pinkeye Purple Hull Peas
"These boots were made for dancin' And that's what I'm gonna do. These boots were made for dancin' I'm gonna dance all over you!"
LOL!!!!!
Hey there. Great content! Question for you. Do you know the approximate measurements of the gap between the dowling? I’m going to build one of these for harvest season. Cheers !
3:35 my girls both talk like that. I went to the beach recently and a lady from Washington state said where are you from. Right in the middle of NC. Where y’all from? Y’all sound like me.
well dang never knew this existed..
Where did you get the bottle trees? I would like to get a couple.
So the question is-to can or freeze? What will it be at Cog Hill Farm?
We freeze...just more convenient for us
That is AMAZING!! what are you doing with the harvest? Never heard of this veg but now I want to try it...would this be a good cover crop?
I do not see why it would not work as a cover crop-Thanks Pam
About those Pinkeye purple hull peas: Do you plant them at the same time as regular peas?
We do
Preparation
"Be a zinnia" !!!
ALWAYS!!!
What is that finger cutter you are using? Please leave a link.
Hoss Tool's Handy Twine Knife, but I use it to harvest with, here is a link: goo.gl/c14uFA :) thanks!!
We're not allowed to pea outside around here.
😂😂😂
What do you do with the hulls? I understand they are good pig feed but not good compost.
I fed them to the guinea hogs ;)
Cog Hill Farm -The Dancing Farmer good “waste not”
Never ;)
I feel like a Zinna in okra patch
