- I pulled a log down to the road with my truck and cut it into firewood. Split with a double bit axe. Cut with a MS440 and 32 inch bar. Splitting firewood and saving out your handle.

Good Lookin Doug-Fir . Aw, I thought I was the only one that knew about tippin the axe a little sideways when splitting firewood, for easier splittin. You have been in the firewood rodeo for awhile. I noticed when you pulled tree to ditch, you were going downhill making it easier on your pickup. You have a lot of firewood getter done up your sleeves. Good watch. Its just about time for a cold one.

Yeah the fir splits pretty nicely.
That's the perfect size firewood when I was younger I drive by stuff like that looking for the big stuff but now that I'm older I don't want anything to do with it
This size is so much easier to handle yet still fills the truck up quickly.

I think you need a longer bar in that saw.
It used to be easy and fun to split doug fir rounds. Of course that was a few years ago.{40 plus years } Now madrone was a real workout. Miss those days.
Yea Doug fir splits nice. Madrone is crazy. It does make nice firewood if you can find it the size that does not need split.

Hard to realize how long that tree is until you start bucking it into 12" rounds .........it goes on forever....

Love it, some of the way you handle both your chainsaw and your axe reminds me of buckin billy ray. Which is my idol. So you split most of ur rounds in 4, is that because thats how big u want em and u can fit them in whatever u burn them in, or is it to make them easier to carry, then u split them in smaller pieces at home?
Thanks. Yeah I spilt them small enough to load them and can split them smaller at my convenience once I get home. Buckin' is an amazing axe man and sawman!!!!

Very little travel on this road. If there is someone it only takes a few frantic minutes to clear a path. Also this road is only a couple miles long and this was near the end of it.
think u need a bigger saw for that small log jeeze!
Yea little over kill but I do like that saw.
Short bars work you harder, you have to stoop down, hard on the back plus a kick back can be more dangerous because the bar is closer to you face. A friend of mine was cutting with short bar, suffered serious damage to his face from a kick back.

It is not a pine it is a Douglas Fir log.
Here in Northern New Mexico pine is the only firewood people sell.

Why don’t move the truck to the wood
I made a few piles of rounds and split them. Then backed up to each pile to load it.

also, do you burn your fir with bark on, or try and remove it? i see that bark is not terribly thick. some island fir has super thick bark, creosote build up?
I burn it with bark on. As long as it is well seasoned I have not had a problem with creosote. The thicker old growth bark I separate and will burn on cold nights with a good coal bed to place it on.

That is a Ms440
I saw a used ms 441 with a wrap handle already on it and I might have to purchase it for my backup saw .
You need a Logax with pickaron it will save you time Loding the wood and save you back too
I like your style of splitting. Not worrying about every piece being perfectly stood up and wasting time. I do the same thing and it saves me hours
Yes who wants to bend over and set every piece up. Splitting is enough work with out wasting time doing that.
@@WildBill1122 not me. If I did all that bending over I wouldn't still be able to swing an 8lb maul like a 3lb axe
what axe you using? weight?
This axe is an old plumb. I think it is about 4 lbs. It is not stamped with a weight and a never weighted it before re handling it.

My Stihl 261 broke down (crankshaft) after only 3 years of cutting firewood. Stihl told me I was to blame since I did not use Stihls brand oil or Stihls alcylatgas.I used 95oct gas and shell oil mixed 2% My old stihl 026 lasted 20 years on this mix. Stihls new saws are so finetuned that you have to use stihls products to get them going. Not happy with the 261 or stihl service.
Should have bought a husky.

aye i was just up there in the winter looking for elk in packwood and went to randle didnt see any in randle but heard they are out there. i was near cispus learning center saw a dude doing some wood some icy back road was pretty cool
440 is a beast, I really like mine. But earlier this year a buddy called and asked if I was interested in a 660 for cheap. Heck yeah !! I can't believe the difference in the two. The big boy only comes out on big stuff, I don't wanna toss it around all day like the 038 Magnum or the 440.

How does that axe split so well? I want one!
The profile of the head help greatly. It is similar to that of a splitting axe. Some double bit axes have a thinner profile that is not so good for splitting but is good for cutting. The other thing is the head weight is about 5.5 lbs which helps deliver more energy to the edge at impact along with a 36 inch handle.

Some people can't swing like others. I've seen full grown men that swing like a girl.some can but can't commit to just split it.
Another thing is it ain't oak.
Depends on wood, some splits easy and some will really work you, same axe. This is nice wood, no knots and looks fairly dry, whole different story if had a higher moisture content with a lot of knots. Lengths make a difference, 14” rounds much easier than 20”. Buckin Billies splitting videos would be much longer if he was splitting some knotty wet bull pine blow downs. I have had loads that had to be broken down with steel splitting wedge and sledge side if maul, forget an axe. Problem solved, in my old age, hydraulic splitter. Sometimes it more the wood than the axe that makes life easier.
I love cutting firewood too. That looks like the area where I have cut some wood before up in the Trask mountain range area outside of Yamhill.
This was in the cascade mountain range.
