Oh, this is the one. My favorite thing is watching the band watch her. Their enchantment turns into marvel, and it’s so cool to see ‘cause we’re all right there with them.
I've seen her perform live and she brought tears to my eyes.❤️
The energy in that room is palpable 😩
@@MISSDD seeing her live is def on my to-do list..hopefully sooner than later
I'm finally seeing her on September 29 in Cincinnati
My vocal folds do that "split" singing... polyphonic singing... wow... harmonizing with yourself is an amazing thing...
Love your analysis 🌹
She sounds EXACTLY like her dad in her lower register. Looove her❤️❤️❤️
She sure does!!!
Yeeesss I agree
I agree!!! ❤️ 😍 💖
Very much so she has that smoothness like her father.
Her rendition of ASFY is dreamy. The best performance of that song was @ Divas Simply Singing. She looked and came out like a princess and fkd that song TO SLEEP. The APOLLO PERFORMANCE…❓⁉️😂🤣😂🤣❤️❤️❤️
Lalah Hathaway is a beast. I've been rocking with her since "Baby Don't Cry", written by the wonderful Angela Winbush.
Me too!!
I love that song.
Yes indeed!
I love that song! All these years I never thought to look @ the credits. I surely thought Ms. Lalah wrote it herself. Both hee and Angela Winbush are on my playlist
@@Make_it_Make_Scents It may be in my head but I really think she's on the backgrounds as well.
Ironically just watched her explain her ability to “do the thing” on the Terrell show and your explanation is close to what she’s learned about it😀
That's what I was going to let him know that she explained it on Terrell show. That was a good show too.
From 6:25 in the video but you are spot on in the explanation
Omg same lol
I hollered when you said, "I DON'T KNOW!" I love you for that! Some things can be explained, others are simply enjoyed! I love your videos!
When you said Michelle Ferrell you took the words right out of my mouth! Most people don't even know who she is! Rachelle Ferrell she is a Musical Genius at this type of scatting! Well done young man.
You mean Rachelle Ferrell?
@@aleialaw Thank you I made the correction. SMILE
All descend from Ella though, original scat momma
The band are outstanding but they are in the presence of greatness. Lalah is a supremely talent and vocalist. Her voice is so captivating
I love how her voice is her own instrument. Beautiful.
This is the one that gives me chills. I cannot say how many times I have watched this video. Loveeeeee her.
YES!!! I have this saved in my watch laters😍
I have watched to many times to count...I keep coming back to it..she is phenomenal!!!
You had me at LALAH! ❤️ Her voice is a like a hug from the Lord! #Hammercy
As a worship leader, you’ve taught me so much about vocal control and using different parts of my voice. Vocal preservation is a must in gospel music, but not taught about! I honor you for all you do🤍
This! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 So true we rely on the ‘anointing’ and omit the training. We forget the excellency in studying how to sing and protect our voices correctly.
This is comment is so true! ❤️
Her voice is like a velvet blanket you can rap yourself in to warm and shield you from the cold.
The more I watch this the more I leave with the impression of someone who has just clearly mastered her instrument
Yaaaas!! BEFORE I even watch, I'm commenting!! She performed live at my Alma Mater, Alabama A&M University, and when she did the "throat singing" everyone went WILD!
I was there for that too! Oakwood Alum here! Literally insane!
CLEARED 🔥
Its known renown-ly as “Vocal Chord Splitting” It’s like a raspy super pressurized whisper that comes up from the back of the throat. It quite literally feels like your singing from the back of your throat. And he is correct it works better with a long vowel sound preferably a OH or AH sound. Pushing from the stomach… I’ve always been able to do this as well.
It’s called polyphonic, overtone singing. There’s a variety of techniques you can use. Learning about overtones helps first. So you can begin to accentuate different pitches on a particular note. Then you you use your vowel shape, vocal folds and surroundings soft tissues, and musculature to “obstruct” the sound to make intentional pitch changes. You can hold the dominate and move the overtone or move the dominate and maintain the overtone. Here’s a video of a lady doing it beautifully. I will say incorporating in performance is an added skill on top of being able to produce the technique to make the sound. ruclips.net/video/vC9Qh709gas/видео.html
WOW! Thank you for the education. I’m learning.
that video is not what she does.....she self harmonizes.....
The lady in the video link you shared is amazing. However, she seems to be doing something less breathy than Lala. Interesting and similar, but not quite the same.
@alexanderfrazier....well you explained that with finesse...I understood what you are saying!! This is good 👍🏿👍🏿😊😊
that’s not what lalah is doing though
What I love about this is that she treats her voice as another instrument.
7:38 i needed that :,)
and just another note-- I ADORE seeing the band jam out to the singer they're playing with! it's so sweet to see them like "okay girl!!" or do that stank face 😭🤚🏾
this was SOMETHING!! Her voice, the band, the EXCELLENCE👏🏽
As a visual learner, I completely OVERSTOOD Everything you said about polyphonic singing. Well said❤️
After a stress-filled day, I find her singing voice to be smooth & relaxing.
"Let the mic do its job." I love this!!
Trace the legend come on y’all really natural gifting is a gift from God .
She does this version of Forever for always for love and her tone and runs on the break down are astronomical
Lala is the TONE Bank
I love Lalah Hathaway....her voice is just *chef's kiss* magical!
She's underrated just like her father!
Her dad is not underrated by real singers. So many say they admire Donny Hathaway and Sam Cooke.
@@stonedog23 If Donny isn't underrated then why they only play this Christmas every December?Donny Hathaway is underrated in my opinion I am sorry to say this!
@@Sandland113 When else are your supposed to play a Christmas song??? The fact that they still play it says a lot. Donny was never underrated. Still highly regarded today.
@@LadyDos2008 He has other songs they could have played on the radio like a song to you ,living in the ghetto & other songs he wrote himself?
Jaron-Tones!! Ok i see you!! I am honored!!
Now let’s talk about Ms Layaah!! She is hands down the best artist in the world!!
On the Terrell show she explains how she does this.
Awesome thank you
She’s my favorite artist. I saw her in Dallas and my instant thought was she is an instrument. She was so present in the room. Her music has so much range and feeling. Just an amazing soul, talent and gift to this world. She asked people to please put their phones down so everyone could just experience those moments. Perfection⭐️
This performance was so wild!! Lallah is such a unbelievable tactician & performer. So great!
She and Rochelle Farrell are always the first names to come out my mouth when the best female vocalist convo arises. Deborah Cox is another underrated singer.
I find it interesting how most of the time people tend to think of those who start high and stay high as the best. Regardless of singers who have a wider range, esp the lower registers and richer tones. My ear prefers the later. But that's also my sweet spot when I sing :) so im probably biased.
She has a voice like butter just like her dad.
This is out of this world. I have seen it a gazillion times and I’m always mesmerized. As out of this world Lalah’s polyphonic singing is, I saw Bobby McFerrin do it in a live version of the song “Drive” and it was unworldly. Here, Lalah sustains the notes. But Bobby actually moved the notes while using his body to play his own rhythm. I damn near jumped out of my skin!!! I’ve actually done it several times involuntarily if I sing when first wake up but like you said, I have no idea how I did it 😂. But watching Lalah being intentional with it is a pure gift and Bobby, whew, he is just on another level altogether 🙌🏽🔥
From what I’ve seen from other comments, she is hitting CHORDS, with her voice.
Literally crying rn.
This woman’s gift!! Every time I see this performance I’m more amazed. 😍
I can do the polyphonic vocal thing but I never knew it was rare until I got older and saw people react to Lalah. I did it a lot as a kid to sound like a train whistle lmao. I tended to try and sound like any and everything I’d heard.
I believe this is the same if not similar technique (Mongolian) throat singers do. I’d wager its 100% something you could teach yourself to do. I can do it if I try hard enough but certainly couldn’t do it on command.
Love these videos! Thanks for making these.
Oh my God!!!! You did it. Was this because of my suggestion? I'm so happy!
And can we give it up for the freaking BAND!!!!!! Them boys BAAAD!!!!!!!!
Her triple voice is INCREDIBLE!! It does sounds like there is air flow coming from more than one area lol
She and Snarky Puppy won a Grammy for this song, I love her.
It’s the I know y’all have been waiting for me to get to this and idk!! The way I hollered!!! It’s the genuineness, transparency and professionalism you give to us every single time, but then literally explains the technical thing that it is!!! I LOVE YOU!!!! Forever follower!!!
My goodness!! Lalah!!! Jaron!!! Y'all sho'nuff can SANG!!! Mmm! God's blessings shower down on you, your family, and your brand continually in abundance 💜☦🕊🥰💖
Thank you so much! And thanks for always praying His blessings on what I do! I pray the blessings return to you tenfold!
@@jmlegrairstudio you are so welcome, and thank you! I believe and receive that in the matchless name of Jesus! Amen! 🙌🏾
She’s a vocal beast !!! Period
Finally!! Somebody besides me is totally in love with video!!! I found it four years ago!! Awesome!!!
Lalah had a excellent Blue Print, Road Map on Singing and Using her voice so uniquely her Father was a Master❤️ Watching this always Makes me Happy😊
WOW!!! I’m in complete awe of her!! Her musicality is “out of this world”❤️❤️🎶🎵🎤🎙
Omg, I've been waiting for someone to do a video on this performance. She is soooooo amazing! Love this performance!!!
First off, thank you for doing an analysis on Lalah Hathaway x Snarky Puppy. Lalah is out of this world and Snarky Puppy is phenomenal as well! Second, your analysis and your singing are incredible! I'm hearing you do Lalah's runs and scats and I'm like "what planet is Jaron from?!" You're unbelievable! Thank you for sharing your gift and your expertise.
This band has been one of my favorites for YEARS. They all are seriously some of the best musicians out there.
And Lalah Hathaway… oh my oh my. Just makes you melt. Such an amazing recording
One of my favorite live performances! Reading your caption, we see you knew what we wanted to get your reaction to!
This Polyphonic singing thing is indeed a phenomenal. I've got a friend who can do this and is such a beauty.
This song is from her first project & it jams from front to back.❤
that tingly excited feeling you're getting is how I feel all the time listening to Lalah
You had offered the best analyse about this vídeo.
Love Lalah's voice🌹👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is my favorite performance of Lalah Hathaway with Snarky Puppy🤩
That note where she sounds like a car horn or train horn reminds me of when Chante Moore started doing her whistle note & u can hear the air at the start.
An incredible performance by an incredible vocalist!
This video is unmatched and it never gets old.
Snarky Puppy...one of my top favorite bands! Lailah Hathaway...one of the greatest vocalists of our time! Period! Jaron...genius sir! Pure genius!!!
I Love her tone!
I was specifically looking for this I knew you had to breakdown Lalah yes 16:20 the whistle horn singing
Lalah is a vocal beast. Period. Point.Blank. This is off topic but can I request you do Angela Winbush’s “Angel”? I know that song is an oldie but what she does vocally would be so cool to hear you analyze it. 😀
I couldn't click on this video fast enough! Oh how I love me some Lalah her voice is like warmed butter! Thank you for this video Jaron!
I love me some Lalah Hathaway. I love Donnie I’m from Ohio. I remember when she was being prepped by her father to sing. She’s awesome. Give me more updates on Layla I wish and hope that she will perform here in Atlanta where I presently live
Finally. My faves Ms. Hathaway & The Pups
Jaron, Great analysis of the whole song. You are truly talented and knowledgeable and I thank you for your explanation.
You gained a subscriber my dude. I needed an enthusiastic analysis of this - big thanks 🙏
Soulful and so relaxing no one sings like her.
Have you seen her perform Sade’s Cherish the Day with Robert Glasper? I think it’s another masterpiece worth reviewing! 😀
Lalah Hathaway has a voice like warm chocolate. I absolutely adore her. Please do more analysis on her vocals... Please!
This performance is legendary. Thank you so
Much for this.

JAAARRRRONNNNNN... YOU KNOW YOU "WRONG" (MEANING RIGHT)....I SAW THE THUMBNAIL & I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE SONG .. THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE SONG THAT INTRODUCED ME TO LALAH HATHAWAY
Went to see her in PortsmouthVA for the first time. Amazing singer and a whole VIBE . Her background singers and band are awesome as well. Lalah definitely does not disappoint. Will go to see her anytime.😇
Watch the Terrell Show that she was on and she explains medically and physically how she is capable of making that sound
O yes i forgot she did explain
Overtones are magical, as instrumentalists it's very hard to do. For her to be singing it is next level greatness.
Extraordinary.
THIS ANALYSIS/REACTION JUST MADE MY DAY I LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE AND YOU TOO AND I’M AN ARTIST . So happy to see this
1 of my favorite Layla renditions
Love me some Layla Hathaway
From the beginning BROUGHT her first album at the tender age of 13 got the cassette tape & was in

IM Coming back is still 1 of my All time favorite songs ever RECORDED And when I heard her and VESTA Williams sing that very same song WITNESSED the only other singer who could probably not only sang it but could possibly JUST POSSIBLY EVEN DO IT BETTER .
NEVER TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM MY GIRL LAYLA SHE IS A MASTER AT THIS THANG WE CALL SANGING ITS IN HER BLOOD & DNA PERIOD .
BUT THEN AGAIN THIS IS VESTA WILLIAMS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

I absolutely love Lalah Hathaway!
JARON! You Betta not STOP MAN!!!!!!! BTW YOUR INSTRUMENT IS GORGEOUS SIR. LOVE YOUR BREAKDOWNS, and clarity you provide with such precision. DUDE!!! Big Ups from Dallas, TX! Oak Cliff to be exact.
I’ve seen Lalah live twice both times were amazing. She is such an amazing and skilled singer. She knows her voice inside and out.
Another one I been wanting you to do yessss😩
Absolutely love her!
I love this song!!! I’m so glad you choose to critique this amazing phenomenon.
Her voice is so pure and smooth like silk! The end part of the video where her voice went high and hit that supernatual note sent me into the sky! I can listen to her all day everyday! 😌 💕 💓 😍 💗 💖
My favorite female vocalist of all time!❤❤❤
I fell in love with this song years ago. ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊. One of the musicians said she changed the key the day before they recorded. Took it down i think a half key. 😊😊
This right here! Lalah is masterful…I cannot think of the many adjectives that describe her use and the quality of her voice. From the very first time I heard her in concert with Joe Sample, I’ve been a fan. The band reacted the way we all did - whew!!!!!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Wow! Never heard another like that before. That's amazing!
I am so glad there's research on this throat singing technique😍...Been messing it up since I've seen this years ago🤣🤦 THANKS FOR POSTING🎯
The beginning of the video is the part I couldn't wait for you to react to.
Her father is the LEGENDARY DONNIE HALTAWAY her mother is and acclaimed OPERA singer, yes she is more then a Magnificent singer WOW,WOW AMAZING.
❤️❤️🤎❤️
Yes! An instant modern classic from the beginning to end, TIL THIS DAY! 😊👌🏾🔥
