Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Dave Rastovich, Jay Morairity, Andy Irons, Heith Norrish, Anthony Pols, Munga Barry, Jay Thompson, Sunny Garcia, Dean Morrison, Rochelle Ballard and many more tear apart South Straddie in the session from heaven (actually a whole lot of sessions over the years) and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate in fine form, demonstrating his utter contempt for a $20 million dollar surf break and the entire world wide surfing community.
This clip shows exactly WHY this treasure, the best beachbreak in Australia needs to be SAVED NOW from destruction, saved from the grossly irresponsible proposal of a cruise ship terminal going ahead.
DON'T DELAY!!! The time is NOW to act, otherwise this place WILL be lost forever
It doesn't matter if they put this thing at The Spit, or at Wavebreak or at Tugun or Kirra, it's going to be an absolute irreversible disaster for Gold Coast surfing!
The world famous break at South Straddie (TOS) on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia is right now facing its biggest threat ever, with a real chance it could be destroyed forever. The now imminent construction of a proposed monster cruise ship terminal and its up-keep, will increase water turbidity (particles in the water) and the massive amount of constant dredging could destroy this place forever. This drastic land-grab by the private sector and local council will also bring with it the loss of wavebreak island, the loss of breeding habitat and potential fouling of a pristine aquatic area (home to over 450 marine species), heavily impact a multi million dollar diving industry and allow them to impose public access restrictions however they see fit, for the entire area - all in all it is a fast tracked scheme to claim land that belongs to all of us before we can get a chance to stop it. The mainstream media, local council and state government are trying hard to drop a thick blanket over any opposition to their plans in an attempt to appear that they have public support. This IS state controlled CROWN LAND that the council has no authority over. These changes would be irreversible and would render this amazing and unique area a marine wasteland, wiping out multiple multi-million dollar industries and our best free, open, public spaces. Hit the www.savourspit.com website to find out more...
ALL surfers need to unite now against these money driven forces that want to sell our free spaces, sell our crown land and in effect sell our surfbreak from right under our feet, to a Singaporean construction company - who will in turn replace it with massive churning ships, concrete and steel, facilities for the wealthy, massive hotels and pensioner-consuming casinos.
How can you be a part of saving this magic place? (YES WE NEED EVERY SINGLE PERSON TO HELP!)
    1) register your vital support for the Save Our Spit Alliance, a non profit community group that is spearheading the challenge at
    www.saveourspit...

    2) Write to, and keep writing to the following politicians to express you concerns, don't hold back!

I live in South West-England, UK and my Aussie friend told me about this when we went surfing a couple of days ago! I hope you manage to save your spot! I know what its like to have your some of your favourite beaches ruined by capital investment. Just leave everyone's beaches alone! good luck guys!

Yes, there are too many surfers in the GC and only 3km of great surf breaks on the GC. It's a problem that has lead to surf related violence and aggro and is why several calls for a decent wave pool has been considered on the GC. Another factor against saving this place when they could possibly build a Webber/Slatter wave pool and make millons directly through that business. They should leave this place alone and not go through with the development, chances are though, that the developers will win in the end as proving that the GC would lose 20 million dollars per year if they ruin South Straddie is tough to prove in the minds of politicians. Politicians just think big business and are not sympathetic to the desires of what they perceive as a bunch of dole budging surf bums, like it or not, that's how most politicians think. The area in question in South Straddie is also mainly only accessed by surfers and not the community at large, it's not a family place, this is also known by politicians. Yes, I personally agree that they should save this place. I don't think it will happen in the end unless the whole community (not just surfers) peacefully but diligently protest the development. It needs the whole communities voice to oppose the development - most politicians just won't take surfers that seriously. Also, the politicians are well aware of surf related violence being well documented in the Gold Coast. Using South Straddie as a draw card for tourism when a fair portion of local surfers are known to be either openly hostile or non approving towards non-locals and tourists is also an argument killer and hypocritical in the eyes on politicians. Even at the 6 minute point in the video, there is a scene where one surfer is aggressively hostile towards a guy on a body board - the BB may or may not been trying to drop in - it does not matter to a poli, either way, that kind of hostility is not a good look in the eyes of politicians and hinders your argument that the place is a tourist draw card which the GC mayor does not seem to believe anyway. Having images of aggression and hostility will just reinforce the perspective in the minds of polis that surfers are a bunch of bludgeoning bums, it does nothing to boslter the argument that Sth Straddie is a tourist draw card worth 20 million bucks. As I said, I am FOR saving this place from the developers, I just think you need to target your campaign as a 'community project' and not just a 'surfer project' if you want to influence politicians. Somehow, as hard as it may be, get the whole community opposing this, not just surfers. I hope that I have injected some reality into how a politician thinks so that your campaign might be successful. I do hope the developers are stopped. Good luck. Maybe if a more sympathetic mayor is elected it could happen. That's an idea, get a surfer in on the inside of council!

I am sure without the surfing community their would be more tourists drowning as they work the unpatrolled beach's,as I myself have had to hand my board to two tourists in need of saving, and I am sure many others would say the same,I vote pray for those in politics, peace

Tate doesn't seem to understand this stuff & he clearly doesn't understand how much money it already generates for the local economy. Some surfing friends used to travel down from Brisbane every week just to surf TOS. Afterwards they always went to Main Beach for breakfast before the trip back for work. The only reason I even moved back to the Goldie was for the surf at places like TOS & Burleigh.
Private sector can build a jetty off Surfers Paradise instead & it might create a new break.

I agree that a cruise terminal would be stupid but either way no terminal of leave it alone the whole coast has developed into a cess pit. The current traffic at the spit is a mess, its strewn with litter and marginal people. 30-40 years ago the coast was good. Now its a lost cause and the bogans and criminal element are the sort of the lipstick on the pig...sad really

They've got you by the balls and you don't even know it. Knowledge is power. Power is money. Money facilitates accounting. Accounting is reductionist. Without this knowledge your campaign has already lost before it even begins.

Accounting is reductionist. It takes social values and ethics out of the debate. By arguing over quantum you are playing directly into their hands. .....rhetorical capability through naive journalistic practices. Do you really think you have a chance? This is a critical philosophical question, not an ideological one. What you guys are saying is that capitalism is the way forward when we all know that it is the aether of modern societal poison. Surfers versus corporate CEOs. I know who my money (no pun intended) is on in that contest.
