I love that area! I've camped down there but didn't know about the snakes until after my trip. Apparently there's a healthy cotton mouth, copperhead, and rattlesnake population there. There's a road called "Snake Road" that has tons of them moving along to their winter shelters.
I used to travel from GA to Chicago once or twice a year and always made Garden of the Gods a stop over. Glad you got to see this beautiful place and great photos of the sunset.
Snakes are awesome, any time I see a Snake it's a good day. great photography and a lucky capture. Garden of the God's is high on my must see list. High 90's and humidity from 80-98% is normal here🤮. Great video and editing 👍
Hi, Dave and Carrie, the video began beautifully with lovely music and ended magically with Carrie capturing that fabulous sunset. Fireflies are I agree so rare that the sight of them absolutely fascinates me Thank you for the lovely video. Dave you transform into a professor the minute you have your glasses on. Take care have fun🤣😝😜
You have such wonderful videography skills! I love the sunset and the drone shots. Thank you for taking us along while you find these beautiful places!
Dave and Carrie, it's such a blessing to see you discovering and enjoy nature that I have enjoyed my whole life living in Illinois. We were in southern Illinois in 2014 and when the 17 year cicadas hatched out coinciding with a 7 year cicada hatch out- and you couldn't walk anywhere without stepping on them and they were 4" long. We get a cicada hatch here every years. As a kid we used to fill canning jars with fireflies- it was a family summer activity in the 60"s. The trick to catching them is to come up from below with an open hand. Don't swat, gently scoop them from the air and they stay on your hand for several seconds before they can take flight again. Dave great drone footage. Carrie the time lapse was phenomenal.
Excellent video!!! Had never heard of the garden of the gods! Absolutely beautiful!!! Same with fireflies and those amazing views of the sunset, glorious! Thank you!!!!!!
I love all of your videos!!! I am terrified of heights!! Thank you for jumping the crack and sharing the beautiful sunset!! There is no way I could have done that.
The mating couple was one of the many subspecies of the Rat Snake. Harmless and very beneficial buy eating rodents. Less rodents means less of the toothy snakes we have in Texas. We had a seven foot Texas Rat Snake (they get up to ~8 feet long) fall out of the trees at our campgrounds. It went to another tree, up it and into a hole...never to be seen again. We enjoy your videos.
Dave! You look so good in that blue shirt & brown shorts! 😁 Great butterfly photography Carrie! Sheez! You guys are really good at providing camping info & everything related. We free camp 99% of the time also. Cool Illinois views from the bluff. If that rock was red, you’d think you were in Arizona! Absolutely amazing sunset!!!!!❤️❤️❤️ I’m gonna put that place on our list! Thanks for another fabulous video, you two!
We love the Shawnee! 😍 We stayed at Oak Point this spring and saw lots of sights. Rosebud and Giant City are also great. Have you been to Starved Rock State Park? It's in northern IL and is our other fave. 💗
Please get a critters guide so you can identify things like snakes. Lots of mostly harmless friendly snakes in the mid west. Just like the most of the people there. Southern IL is not well known but worth visiting. I passed through last June.
Great review of the camp grounds. So funny once you become comfortable remote/offgrid/dispersed camping. Hard to ever imagine paying. The sun set footage was amazing. Thank you for taking the time to capture that content for our viewing. The time-lapse was also incredsble too! So nice to seen the garden of the gods. Those stones and the natural carving wow something else. We have so many amazing hidden treasures in the US. Thank you for make the time and taking the time to show us all these amazing places. We are on the east coast and yes humidity is something else at times. When you build a larger solar system will you then consider a 12 volt AC unit like the Dometic RTX 2000? Or just traveling to cooler climates? ~Mark & Teresa
We stayed at Cave in Rock State Park cabins the end of April. Cool weather for hiking and convenient to attractions and trails such as God of the Gods and Rim Rock trail.
Your videos are so informative... Thank you. Snakes creep me out too! Such beautiful scenery and amazing videography and photography! A few days ago we had temperatures in the 90s with the humidity just as high. The past couple of days have been much much cooler in the sixties and rainy but still a little muggy, but bearable. I am in Southeastern Massachusetts. I can usually handle the humidity unless there is absolutely no breeze at all. Winter is what I hate... I can't warm up no matter what in the winter. Wherever you are headed I wish you safe travels. 👍👍👍👍👍😁
Can't believe you were in Illinois right after we left and we're in northern California now. Lol!! I did Ironman in Kentucky and swam in the Ohio River for it. You can swim in it, fyi. Thanks for another beautiful video....
not poisonous, mating, and maybe good luck. i heard if a spider drops in front of you, it's good luck . imagine what two mating snakes means ! bet something good happens. y'all are livin the life, thank you for the extra effort of sharing it !
Wow I don't know why but I thought Illinois was all flat. We went from TN to Chicago and it was nothing but flat. Great to know that there are some beautiful sites up that way. That sunset though, worth the walk in the muggy heat.
Such beautiful rock formations! You were so brave to stay close where the snakes were hanging (loosely:-) Did you ever figure out what was in the water that kept surfacing?
I was down that way about 3 months ago and tent camped. Really enjoyed it. I will be going back. I paid to stay in a campground for a shower and toilet. I'm looking for a class b rv now. When I get it I'll try that free campground.
During my time out west and having westerners visit us...the discussions always include east coast humidity and fire flies or lightening bugs as we called them growing up. And trust me when I say nobody on the east coast enjoys the humidity lol another great video!!
You did it! You got your sunset! About moving away from the snake campground..... I wouldn't blame you a bit for moving on. I could almost feel your angst. Also, the humidity. Ugh. In Central Oregon where we live it is almost always very low humidity. Don't know if we could handle traveling in that, much less live there. It's nice to experience it through your eyes :)
You guys caught an unsually wet summer for us. Typically it's getting dry and hot. This past year and a half, like most of the country, has brought very unusual weather.
Not where I grew up... on the Wabash River. It was very very Hot and very very Humid all the time in the Summer... It did not have to rain for the humidity and heat to be unbearable... in the Summer.
Snakes are creepy for me too, especially falling out of trees! I’ve learned to admire them. Often our experience the second person on a hike sees the snake after the lead scares them up. 😁
Yup, I'll take desert rattle snakes any day, cuz you can hear & see them & know where they will most likely hide. But giving snakes the upper hand by making them parachute from trees!...it's just not fair. 😜
Oh, snakes falling outa the tree?! Nah, I’m outa there! The butterfly was gorgeous! What kind was it? I love how you both roll with the strikes with such positivity and light 💕 It really is very inspiring 😃 Have you tried keeping a wet t-shirt in the freezer for a short time, rolling it up and wrapping it around your neck? I used to work in a very hot kitchen and it does help.
Okay, I was prepared for this...Because of your warning in the last video about...SNAKES 🐍 🌳FALLING FROM TREES! This was the first time I was FOR deforestation. Just cut em all down! 😅I really appreciate the time stamp warning, I'll take your word for it that is was cool to see. I can't decide which creeps me out more, those leeches from a past video or these...snakes! Except for the horrifying 27 seconds, another great video guys, thank you!😜
LOL, you guys from California and the humidity. Grew up in the hu-mid-west so it's just sort of par for the course for me. But I've been out in California for 25 years now so I have been a bit spoilt like you.
Creepy...snake love in the trees....Ive seen large Teranchulas, up in the trees [ Calif foothills]. Stay safe and have fun. Garden of the Gods" really pretty seems unusual to see those rock.formations in the woods...their might be a story there?
Another nice video. Thanks. Have you compared your 1st and 2nd year expenses ? I'd be interested in knowing how to prudently live on the road full time as you have. Thanks again!!!
The videos of the sunset was amazing!!!!! With the mist! And those rock formations...were other worldly! A great place for photography! I love fire flies too! Humidity AND snakes...No way! Although, like you Carrie, I didn’t want to see the snakes but I watched that part of the video anyway. Lol! So how did you charge your batteries? Do your batteries charge as you drive? And how much time Or miles between camps?
What a beautiful area!! Who knew Illinois was so tropical looking. Being from MT, I am not a fan of humidity. I am certainly not a fan of snakes falling from trees....YIKES!! Beautiful photography and drone footage. I loved the black and white stripped butterfly at the beginning. I have not seen one like that before. Wonderful video!!
We moved quickly west after this video. We could not bear the heat and humidity any longer. 😂 It did in fact have a tropical feel to it. 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity is not for us either. Bring on the snow 😀
Hay Guys, really enjoy watching you videos & trips. But there is one topic in the nomad land that nobody wants to talk about? Fuel, and fuel cost for your rig. I'm looking to convert a used ambulance to RV rig someday. This info would be most helpful. Thanks and safe travels.
LOL. My daughter & I were sitting on a dock overlooking a saltwater bay. A large tree branch beside us slowly leaned into the water as a 6-7 foot water snake slid off right beside us. 🥺 No time to scream-came up from behind us-was told this snake is the most poisonous water snake in Florida 🙃🤷
Beautiful video. You should have checked out Shawnee national forest and giant city park area. I grew up down there and learned to rock climb and rappel around there. So many beautiful places in southern Illinois. It is much different than the rest of the state. Also beautiful around starved Rock and the northwest corner around Galena. All along the rivers are alot of beautiful cliffs and Rick formations, caves and great hiking. Also lots of snakes, even rattlers, just gotta be careful as in any wild areas. Great job. Just discovered your channel and enjoy your content. Safe travels 😄✌️
S-s-s-s-sNAKES!!! Good golly, you would have seen me go from 0-60 in a heartbeat. You should have opened this episode with, "Welcome to National Geographic". lol

How do you not cry when seeing such spectacular views😍. Just stunning, thank you for sharing.
I know right! We love this lifestyle! 😀
Beautiful video and music at the Garden of the Gods.
You might say those 2 snakes fell in love. Thanks for another interesting video
I used to travel from GA to Chicago once or twice a year and always made Garden of the Gods a stop over. Glad you got to see this beautiful place and great photos of the sunset.

Beware of snakes falling from trees doing the tango. I guess they were caught up in the moment. Nice pics of the sunset!
Your phography Is beautiful.
Those snakes met each other on Timber…then fell in love
😆Good one! They did check each other's profile out on Snakebook afterwards.
😅👍🏻
Spectacular
That sunset...just stunning!
Oh, that sunset was an incredible show. Wow!
You have such wonderful videography skills! I love the sunset and the drone shots. Thank you for taking us along while you find these beautiful places!
Thanks for such beautiful videos and info on campgrounds. The sunset was amazing.....God is good!
Loved the snake scene always love your videos.
A stunning video. The pictures were great.
Thank you. Once again WOW you guys are aces at production!!! We're going try to do in Fall Garden of the gods hope we can get a reservation.
Wow! what a beautiful, colorful sunset at Garden of the Gods. Thanks, Carrie, Dave & Roodle :)
Fascinating to see the snakes mating, although I'd be freaked also by them dropping out of the trees! Loved the Garden of the Gods, great photography.
Beautiful pictures of the photographer. Can pass on the snakes. Thank you.
Dave and Carrie, it's such a blessing to see you discovering and enjoy nature that I have enjoyed my whole life living in Illinois. You guys are excellent at getting videos out "on time" every week! My husband and I eagerly look forward to them. Thank you!💕
I really enjoyed your music selection this week.
Gorgeous misty sunset!
That sunset! Beautiful! We both said “wow” at 21:00 😄
Your photography is just so amazing! I really want to visit Garden of the God's now!
Excellent video!!! Had never heard of the garden of the gods! Absolutely beautiful!!! Same with fireflies and those amazing views of the sunset, glorious! Thank you!!!!!!

thanks for the info!
Snakes are of course an important part of the ecosystem...it's just the falling from trees part that's not cool. 😅
Always great enjoyable & informative videos from you both. Very enjoyable content. Thank you.
Thank you for another wonderful video. Very informative and beautiful photography! Stay safe. See you next week.

Garden very pretty. Almost worth falling snakes..... almost. I would have had no move right then. Have a great day Roodle.
We love the Shawnee! 😍 We stayed at Oak Point this spring and saw lots of sights. Rosebud and Giant City are also great. Have you been to Starved Rock State Park? It's in northern IL and is our other fave. 💗
Impressive drone footage as usual. Dave could give classes. Sunset in Garden of the Gods, wow what a great shot.
Loved the photography- amazing mating snakes-quite a dance! Also, the sunset was lovely 😊
STUNNING is a word too often overused these days - but not in this case.....Love that shot at the end! 26:51

Illinois looks gorgeous! 👍🌎👌🌲🇨🇦
Great video! Loved the snakes falling out of the tree! They were distracted by “love” for sure! Thanks for sharing! 🤙
Great video. We remember how much Carrie likes snakes😂😂. HAPPY TRAILS
When you see two snakes curling up together they are having contact with each other starting a family to have more snakes, to put it nicely.
For reals? lol
I thought they were dirty dancing lol 😋
Great review of the camp grounds. So funny once you become comfortable remote/offgrid/dispersed camping. Hard to ever imagine paying.

With those rock formations were they under water at one time? Very interesting. Fireflies! How wonderful! Appreciate the information on those places.
Yes, the information on the sign said it was a shallow sea bed at one time. Great guess! 😎
Oh those snakes got me! Eeek! Great snake mating nature video though. 😜
Nice video. this was Dixon State Park, not Dixie. There are a lot of snakes in Southern Illinois.
Killer sunset! I don’t care if you had to pay for camping, your still my boondocking heroes 😎
Agreed!!
I live 2 1/2 Hr from the garden of the god on IL. Love the video and the drone footage.
We stayed at Cave in Rock State Park cabins the end of April. Cool weather for hiking and convenient to attractions and trails such as God of the Gods and Rim Rock trail.

Such beautiful rock formations! You were so brave to stay close where the snakes were hanging (loosely:-) Did you ever figure out what was in the water that kept surfacing?

Let's see, west from Illinois....are you guys going to Idaho? Northern Idaho has lots of boondocking opportunities! Maybe we'll see you out here!
Another great video! You are near my part of the country. We live near the Land Between the Lakes in western KY. Come visit!!
You did it! You got your sunset! About moving away from the snake campground..... I wouldn't blame you a bit for moving on. I could almost feel your angst. Also, the humidity. Ugh. I am scared of snakes too, so creepy!!! Them falling off trees is even worst!! I do want to go see this beautiful place so bad though... :(
Holy smokes, I would have been moving myself out from under the trees for sure. Beautiful places you've found, once again :-)
Oh, snakes falling outa the tree?! Nah, I’m outa there! The butterfly was gorgeous! What kind was it? Kerry you are cute. I like the way you express your dislike of snakes. I also don't like them. Great video guy!
I'm with Dave let's go LOL other than the snakes a lovely video
Snake hanky panky. Love is in the air.💕
The snakes were harmless rat snakes if that makes you feel better. Love watching you guys adventure around.
It doesn't...😅
+Bob Pendergrass it makes me feel better! Thanks
Now i don't know what's worse camping with Snakes or Rats lol
The videos of the sunset was amazing!!!!! With the mist! And those rock formations...were other worldly! A great place for photography! I love fire flies too! Humidity AND snakes...No way! If you don’t hav an umbrella get one now! I don’t worry about a little rain but falling snakes is just wrong. At least they weren’t aiming for you.

Was the place u took the beautiful sunset pictures inside the paid camping area. Would love to do that.
Again beautiful pictures. It's amazing what you can see in the rock formation. One of them was a heart I saw
Happy 4th of July!
S-s-s-s-sNAKES!!! Good golly, you would have seen me go from 0-60 in a heartbeat. You should have opened this episode with, "Welcome to National Geographic". lol
Carrie no need for excuses to go to the state park lol
SOON as i saw those snakes I'm Out!
may like this future yt "Crawfish Catch & Cook - Camping on Deserted Island (Fishing & Trapping Dinner)"
Ever been to Johnson shut inns in missouri
I would be creeped out by the snakes to. They where not small
After seeing those what appears to be mating snakes…oh my gosh…thank goodness y’all weren’t walking beneath that tree as they fell downward. 🐍
Looking at the snakes being intertwined was amazing !!! 😊 I planned on visiting Shawnee national forest in the future I was kind of scared because I've never been camping alone . I would love to attempt to stay at the garden of the gods campsite. I have a few questions... are there any Dispersed camping sites that are closer than tower rock campground ? And is there a limit on how many nights you can stay at Pharaoh or garden of the gods campgrounds ? P.S . Roodle is smart 🤓 💚💚💚💚💚💚
There are quite a few great camping sites in that general area. At least six that I can think of right hand.
They're obviously mating
snake-porn, didn't think this was that kind of channel :-) You have a great camera to catch that and those beautiful butterfly shots in such detail.
🤣😂🤣👍
After all that other crap you guys found a nice place.
I would be freaked out too by snakes. I avoid them at all costs. They looked like rat snakes. Harmless, but creepy anyway.
Man...not the snakes!!!😨😨 I was planning to go there the last week of september 2022 and now so skeptical...
Definitely go to Garden of the Gods! Just not that free campground with the snakes. 😂
those snakes were mating and going second is a sure way to be sure you are going to be the one bitten. the first person alerts the snake and the second person gets bitten. lol. that is the truth. be careful.
When i see all those ads lined up, i don't dislike it but i skip the video.
