I also noticed some of the Junior Novels were written by R L Stine who later did Goosebumps! Interesting

I really checked out on the Joe line in '87. I had a good majority of the figures in '86, but in '87... I had updated Cobra Commander and the Cobra boxer dude.
I don't recall the majority of that '87 line, excluding the Defiant. I do recall seeing that massive display at Toy 'r Us when they used to display the toy itself above the aisles.

Strongly considering Pre-ordering the Hardcover collection.
A lot of my peers weren't playing with GI Joe anymore by 1986 and 1987, or at least not admitting to it. I kept up with the line for a few more years. It is interesting to note the Sears exclusives weren't included in the toy catalogs included with the toys, so the only way to know of the was seeing them in stores, their catalogs, and word of mouth.
Hey Michael, you remember those G.I. Joe books that were for sticker collecting? They'd have the cards where you needed encoder glasses to see what was on it. I don't remember the names of them but they were really awesome.

Not a coffee table book but an Ultimate U.S.S Flagg table book!! You really have an excellent and most appropriate reading surface there Michael. I really like the images and as you said nothing beats having something tactile in hand.

I can't believe how clear those images are printed. At times it really feels like you are looking at physical packages.
It's crazy how many of these I had as a kid! I was more spoiled than I realized! Also RL Stine wrote GI Joe books? I wonder was this before or after Goosebumps?

Hi Michael, do you know the first company that come up with the idea of transforming robots?Is it Takara Tomy with their Diaclone because Transformers came from it.
Loved this line with the movie characters. Crystal Ball was terrible, and he was always in stock at the stores as no one was buying his figures. I never knew General Hawk was in the '82 line, that was interesting to find out.
The Cobra Mamba was my favorite toy of this line and one day I will have it again in my collection and the tomahawk didn't have it but I will get it too I love helicopters and want the pithon patrol conquest was my favorite jet

The chain of command always confused me with gi Joe. Especially if you add in the comics where, hawk was the original leader and stalker was 2nd in command. Duke didn't show up till way later. Also you brought up beachhead, who in the cartoon seem to have a beef with flint, I wish that could have been explored
I enjoyed how command was handled in GI Joe. It was what it needed to be in that particular situation based on experience, not on documentation. That was a pretty short scene between the two but I think Beach Head was annoyed that Flint was falling back on a lazy way of thinking. You can't just dismiss someone like Beach Head's opinion simply because he's lower on the chain of command. GI Joe doesn't work like that. Even the opinion of the grunts have value because every Joe is the cream of the crop.

This is where they ran out of good ideas. I only liked Falcon, Battle Armor Cobra Commander and the Cobra snow vehicle in the '87 line.. I think '82-'86 was sweet spot for GI Joe.

Imagine that...they put IMO, one of the lamest Joe/Cobra characters ever made in Crystal Ball next to my favorite character in Falcon.
