I imagined they would use that hot asphalt (black with pebbled like a goo) and just get rid of debris and plaster some of that stuff on. I'm a white collar dude tho i just imagined a quicker fix.
The goal wasn't sustained flying. It was to get birds in the air ASAP, complete repairs followed while they were out. All that was required was a (sorta) straight line.

3 hrs? That's an improvement? In 89 we regularly did major crater repairs in ONE hr, To runway usability. (Not to like new condition In Chem gear).
when I was in we used steel matting, not sure if that would fix a hole though
Runway usability and being able to fly 3000 sorties is an entirely different thing.

Doesn't matter how long it takes to repair there is still the wait time of the concrete to set up.
