Surviving torture in the Hanoi Hilton

- During the Vietnam War, American POWs were systematically tortured at a prison camp they sarcastically dubbed the "Hanoi Hilton." Now, salvaged remnants of the prison have been reconstructed as part of an exhibit at the American Heritage Museum in Massachusetts. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin talks with former prisoners who recount what it took to survive.

Unimaginable ......7 -8 yrs .....what strength ....truly heros and deserve the highest tribute our country can give them (still wiping tears).
These fools aren't "heros." Trump said he only likes the ones who weren't captured lol.
Yeah, kinda choked me up when the guy still remembered how to tap out his name in Morse code on the wall.

It pains me to hear the hero saying they "broke."
None of those guys broke, they survived.
The country and our citizens owe these men a debt that can never be repaid. Bless each and every one of them, especially those that paid the ultimate price 😔🇺🇸

I lost a lot of close friends to that awful war! The ones that did return home had dreams of horror. Wish America would have welcomed them home like they have with other wars! Instead the survivors of the war felt ashamed. So thankful for this video! Wish it would have come sooner.
They should be ashamed.
@@lukeschmidt An asinine statement. The politicians that got us into that war should be ashamed, not our soldiers. Worse, one-third of all young men forced to fight in Vietnam were drafted into service, they had no choice.

Humans can be so cruel to each other, I truly pray and hope we can all live in a peaceful world and stay in our own lanes! ❤ thank you for this story.
I have an ORIGINAL signed, hardcover copy of Commander McGrath's book with illustrations whicj my dad purchased at the PX, Charleston Navy base in 1973. I get it out and read it, occasionally. We salute you, Navy driver.
Absolutely horrifying. The strength one would need to survive years in that prison is unimaginable to me.
Every time you see Trump remember what he said about John McCain:
“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
McCain, a former Navy pilot, spent roughly five-and-half years in a notorious North Vietnamese prison known as the “Hanoi Hilton,” where he was repeatedly tortured. He spent two of those years in solitary confinement.”
That’s how Trump truly feels about these incredible heroes.
Trump was referring to how McCain turned traitor in his old age and voted with the liberal Democrats to squash everything good that Trump did for America. McCain got his feelings hurt and took out his childish revenge by screwing Trump in every way he could. McCain was a hero in his Vietnam days, but there's no such thing as once a hero always a hero.
Well Trump is a trashy human, so no surprise he said this.
The dumbest thing Trump ever said
This alone is reason enough for me NEVER to vote for Trump. What he said was despicable!
As much as I respect those who survived he has a point about taking leadership from someone who was never captured or at least escaped. The point of reference being that when held in captivity for that long, everyone breaks. There was no one at Hanoi to my knowledge who didn’t break. So in a sense it’s contradictory for someone who is forced into treason to become president. I respect POW’s but I would never see them as fit for office. The best they can do is teach SERE’s and pass on whatever they learned. But being put into positions of power afterwards would forever remain questionable.
Jeremiah Denton was a national treasure. To endure the pain and suffering at the Hilton for years, and upon release say that he and his fellow-soldiers merely "faced difficult circumstances in the service of our country," shows he wanted the country to see their strength and resolve.
I remember when they came home some broken, some relieved, some just sad and frightened.
Some of them came home on my tenth birthday 🎂 in January 73 and I remember seeing one getting off the plane and kissing the ground and crying. It still moves me to this day.
They survived torture for 8 years. We threw a fit over quarantine for 1 year.

I served in naval aviation transport during the vietnam war.
I have heard more than a few combat veterans say we were fighting on the wrong side.
A lot of corruption and suppression of personal freedom in south vietnam.
I have also heard why north vietnam considered our downed pilots as war criminals (from their perspective)
America never declared war on north vietnam.
North vietnam never bombed Pearl Harbor or destroy the World Trade Center.
Thus, they were not obligated under the Geneva rules to consider our prisoners as actual POW’s.
I’m not sure if I agree with their perspective and I hate how they tortured our airmen.
But it elicits looking at their perspective.
Oh! A rare voice of reason.
The US has been involved in more than a few illegitimate wars in the last 100 years. And it's always the young men who paid the price for empire.

Every war is awful and I’m thankful for our troops, but also these vets really had it bad because even when they came back the people were mean and disrespectful to them. They were literally just doing their job as citizens.
On one documentary about airmen and fighter jets, one pilot saw an enemy missile the size of a telephone pole flying towards him and what scared him worst was his thoughts of getting captured and being sent to this place.
Any many people today complain about anything and everything.
They have no idea about real suffering.
And a war for nothing. Sad. Rich, powerful man-games while our men (and women) were killed, tortured and mamed forever.

It wasn't until I was hired to work on a film in 1985, The Hanoi Hilton that I learned of this horrific place and of the mighty men who endured the vicious torture inflicted upon them.. Although the film isn't a masterpiece it does reflect the truths of what went on over there. In addition to gaining a powerful history lesson I got to meet and work with Senator MacCain-who is in the film. For those of you who've watched this video-I suggest you check out the film. and for those who've lived through this horror, I'd like to know what you think of the film.
You poor guys...how can you remember! Young people today would need to hear.

A powerful story. If you'd like to learn more about the failed escape attempt that ended with Ed Atterberry's death, find the book, THE PARTY DOLLS. I'm french, and currently finishing to read the epilogue of "Defiant" by Alvin Townley. I learned about Jeremiah Denton about two years ago, and then watched "Return With Honor". This story (especially the book) has tremendously humbled me, and makes me feel incredibly small next to these men. I've been suffering from chronic pain for the past ten years and thought my life was 'tough'. Two years ago, I remember thinking "I wonder what I'd have done had I been in their position". And, about a month later, I injured my neck/spine really badly while working out. From that point on, I experienced levels of pain I'd never known. Felt like someone would snap my neck and crush my spine every night, sleeping became terror. I was on morphine and other painkillers for a year, lost and medically let down (apart from those medications). I'm still on other strong painkillers, barely helping. I thought about killing myself many times. But the memory of this Story, stayed with me. Also, Viktor Frankl's book Man's Search For Meaning, and its lessons, kept me alive and gave me the strength to go on during the worst moments. Only recently did I finally decide to read Defiant. As I'm reading the last few pages, I do believe this book will forever stay with me. I cried many times, and been pondering of and meditating on the privilege I have to live in the conditions I am currently in, as 'uncomfortable' as they may be. My respect and gratitude for these men (and the women who fought for them) is boundless. Sending Love from France.
Stockdale was a true hero to survive those conditions. Incidentally, Albuquerque, NM has the fourth oldest Hilton (1939) with the Hotel Andaluz.
Stocktake was in a position to view the supposed engagement of Aug 4, 1964, in the Gulf of Tonkin, and believed nothing took place. And he was proved to be correct.
I remember that day. John McCain came and spoke to our high school history class. Talk about things and showed us his arm. Which was a compound fracture that they did not set. He had gangrene it wasn't pretty what he had to do to save his arm and life.
Best show 🇺🇸

I am currently in Vietnam and just toured the Hoa Lo prison or “Hanoi Hilton” 3 days ago. Very little was mentioned about American POWs in the prison and what was had it portrayed as the “summer camp” propaganda in this video. It is hard to describe the sick feeling standing in the torture rooms or the solitary confinement cells. I felt incredibly proud to be an American in those moments.
any man who considers himself a Christian has alot to answer for, killing native people ten thousand miles away in a useless war driven by politics.

I always hoped that those fools that welcomed these men and women back with spit and anger had karma knock on their door at some point. No one who fights for freedom should be made to feel like that especially since it was the DC leaders they voted for who sent them there.. My husband was in that war and to this day rarely speaks of it.
Yep, and if memory serves then the late Sen John McCain was a "guest" at the Hanoi Hilton, for a few years before he was released.
Unimaginable cruelty. I’ll bet their captors blamed them for their barbaric torture. Possibly they were not polite while being tortured.
At least the entire world saw what savage treatment they endured.
A wake up call to all.
As an aside, a person very close to me, endured a year of daily torture.
Vietnam was a very unpopular war and many men on both sides were treated inhumanly.
A draft was in place, and nobody deserves torture.
Why don't we talk about the ones that our country knowingly left over there all these years.
My grandfather also served in the Air Force as part of the ARVN and escaped on an aircraft the day Saigon fell with some of my family members to avoid this same fate. I find it crazy that some people who claim to support freedom still support the North and it’s actions while condemning the south for things that they’d let pass in the North. At the end of the day human rights abuses occurred at much higher rates in the north and still happen to this day in the VCP against those that speak up for freedom and democracy within the country. There’s a reason why so many Vietnamese risked their lives to escape when the communists took over. They wouldn’t have done that if the south was a terrible place and the north was good.
Too bad Vietnam today is a thriving and prosperous nation without the help of your kind, traitors!
The communists are the one that protected and nurtured Vietnam against foreign interference, while the capitalist puppets are colonialist collaborators.
The reason why they supports the North Vietnam because they are true freedom fighters that freed Vietnam from outlanders and invaders.
