  • A walk across the Pevensey Levels. Until 1,000 years ago, covered by sea, they now support an extremely diverse selection of flora and fauna along with a fascinating castle and two churches, as well as a country rail crossing.

Pevensey Castle was originally a Roman Fort known as Anderida and was built in around AD290. After the withdrawal of the Roman troops it was used as a shelter by the remaining inhabitants. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle records that in 471 the fort was besieged and its population slaughtered by Saxon raiders.
The fort was used by William the Conqueror in 1066 to shelter his troops after landing at Norman's Bay. Subsequently William I marched his troops east along the coast to Hastings where he defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings.
