Seeing that modern excavator helping the old one is like a great grandson helping is great grandpa go to his doctor's appointment. Looking forward to seeing how this thing comes together.

Wow Seeing this Erie steam shovel being moved around is awesome! I remember seeing a steam powered unit like this but on the end of the boom was fitted a steam powered hammer that was driving the pilings into the ground to support abutments for a new bridge that was going to be built over the Shawangunk creek/river in Ulster county New York at about between 1960 to 1961! This general area is just south of the Shawangunk mountains between Pine Bush and Wallkill, NY and a stone's throw from what is the Shawangunk Fire House. I remember puffs of steam coming out the hammer part and smoke coming out the back of "The House" or boiler and it was on tracks!! What a sight it was for a boy oy of 5 years old to behold!! Thanks for the video!!

John, that is exactly what this machine was used for at the end of its life. I can't help but wonder if it could be the same machine.

Hello Rusty! Now would'nt that be something if it was!! Being a very young boy that machine held my attention every time we passed by it chugging steam from the tip of the boom and breathing grey smoke from the exhaust stack on the back of the "house" with some occasional puffs of steam from the back as well, this seemed to happen when the "house was swiveling a little bit.

When I saw the title, I figured that Erie Steam Shovel was headed for 12th and Weschler in Erie, Pa. where it was likely built, but it looks like it’s gone to a good home nonetheless:)

When welding it was probably the first time electricity touched that machine unless it was struck with lightning in its past. I think it’s great you got it functioning in it’s resting spot and loaded under it’s own power albeit with air pressure and some assistance for an excavator. Great job and video! 👍

A number of years of labor and internet searching ahead , and a huge amount of money , it will be worth it to save a piece of history .
Foremost a good building or shelter to store it in while it's being reborn should be a high priority

Good meeting you at Canandaigua. Boiler doesn't look to be lap seam one, so maybe it can be repaired. Thanks for posting. Really enjoy what you do to save these machines.

I do not, have considered making one but I don't know much about it.

It would be nice if the triple riveted stayed firebox boiler was good. Original equipment has character. Depending on how much debris was on the top flue sheet and whether or not it was drained and dry you might get lucky.

Just shows how much weight is in the boiler end, that front just kept hanging there when unloading like it was never going to tip downwards…😎

What are your plans with the old boiler? If you are looking to have a new one made, I’d be interested in buying the old one to fix up and run some of my engines. Let me know!

Hi Jeremy, the boiler is not in good shape but sonograms will need to be done to determine if it's worth repairing or it will likely be replaced. Any updates will be posted here to this channel, but don't be too eager; this will be a long endeavor.

What kind of air pressure / volume is needed to move something like this?

    • @RustyRescues
      @RustyRescues  3 года назад +2

A lot. Steam expands much faster, so to do any kind of similar work you need a huge amount of air. We were running it at 150psi and 425CFM.

Me I think I would have tried to blow out as much dirt from track assemble as could and spry it with oil.

The machine only had a crane boom front with it, and was transported separately. It is shown in the first video, ruclips.net/video/T_OADZ4heJY/видео.html

Why didn't you just back the trailer up closer to where it sat instead of haveing to make it crawl across the yard?
