Back in my city, i often saw people search for the nest to get the ant eggs as a feeder for their pet bird. They said, other than to makes the bird healthy, it'll also makes the bird chirps/sing loudly and beautifuly.
I live in Maharashtra, that's in India. In my native language(Marathi) we call them "Dongla" and they build there nest on cashew and mango trees.. and you are right Danielle, there bites are very painfully. Basically you have to kill them once they bite you, because they don't leave you.
