Honestly while the work themselves are what initially got me clicking your videos, one of my favourite things is how you explain your work, unafraid to admit mistakes and just genuinely full of passion. I would love to hear the backstories of your original characters!
With regards to the green-magenta transition: you're 100% correct that the grey comes from moving "through" the colour wheel, which causes the dingy midtone. The solution is to move "around" the wheel. So either green - blue - magenta, or green - yellow - magenta. I'd actually love to see what the yellow midtone would look like. :) I'm primarily a mini painter, and seeing your sculptures makes me wish I could paint one of them.
@radiationcow I just posted this!! It's cool to see the same advice in different ways from so many different places of skill and knowledge. I went with lilac for the midtone and into the green bc u can play with purples pretty adventuoursly with this colour palette. it's probably one of my fave soloutions to my least favourite colours. thanks for making your art! hope u have good times
You can control the blend between contrasting colors by making your own halfway color. Green into magenta blends to a muddy brown, but if you blend the magenta to a yellow or blue then blend that to green, it’ll look a lot nicer! I learned that from painting skies :)
i’ve also seen people put just white inbetween the colors, i forget which model painter i saw it from though but it worked well without having to add unneeded colors
The sculpture was really good the light coming from the bottom was very good idea and you should put more stories behind the sculptures you make as it will give them as well give them definition and mystery behind there creation
Would love to see you do a Berserk piece, the process and way you talk us through are always so refreshing from the normal music overlaps. Fantastic work !
I'm only a few minutes into the video and this is the I think 9th video I've watched of yours and yet I somehow fall in love with how you make these characters every single time. I'd also love a storytelling video some time
Lilac! Again...another epic original character! I enjoy the back stories of your characters and your narrating voice❤ The muscles, posture and the line of her is absolutely beautiful! I love the style of your old videos where we can see your expression as you create the sculpture, the new style is also great, I love how you talk through the process of making your sculpture ❤ Really appreciate your videos and I'm so happy that I get to see a new one 😄
I think that you were right to envision the flames as vines on her body. Looking at the larger flames around her, I think they would have flowed just as well if not better as roots writhing out of the ground. She could have also been made into a pretty cool druid type character. excellent work.
A bit late to answer your question, but youtube only just pushed this video/your channel to me today - I always love hearing more about the characters when creators have more to give. This sculpture is fantastic, I loved watching it come to life.
Incredible work. Your videos, your art, help me a lot in moments like the ones I'm going through of depression, problems, etc. I thank you for making them, for sharing your talent with the world. Greetings!
I like how the traditional carving method and the modern and pop form are blended well. It's impressive that you can focus more on your work with black cloth in the background. It's very attractive.
Simply gorgeous! Considering the character's origin peeping through your commentary, I felt it entirely appropriate that the light of the flames would be coming from below and not above. She is a creature of darkness and fire. I could see her as an underwater volcano warrior, sprite, or even it's queen. PS: I would have loved to hear her story during the commentary!
Hi just saying that you are my favorite art creator on this platform, I love your attention to detail and the way you show and tell your struggles while making an art piece because I think we really lack the amount of creators that show the graceful art but also the milestone while making something beautiful.
The gesture lines and flow of your work are truly amazing. There are so many great sculpting work out there, but I think yours stand out because of the outstanding posing of character, design, and environment.
Yo, you can use kneadable eraser instead of tape for masking details like that. Then with with the green hair id do a dull-bright-yellow under painting of the hair first and do transition with little yellow showing. Then get like two adjustable stand lights where you can move the lighting. All and all keep facing those flames. This is interesting work.
I don't sculpt or know what kind of paint you use, but I am an acrylic artist, so I can answer the dulling of the hair from my perspective. Colors that are complimentary on a color wheel will muddy when you mix them. Red and green are complementary, so the red in the magenta blends with the green and turns it dull/muddy. To fix/avoid this a layer of something neutral under the magenta and let it dry before adding the magenta. Black will make the magenta pop, white will make it look glowy, browns will show the distinction but keep the relative contrast between the two colors at a similar level. Hope this helps.
I can say that you cant go wrong as long as you're doing the coloring correctly when you blend colors together so its a matter of your own artistic choice, your taste and how you feel plus I thought the green and the magenta together looked amazing
Thank you for this. She's gorgeous. Channels like yours make me want to try my hand at sculpting. I've no training, no schooling, but I'm going to jump in and see what I can do. It kills me that I can't finish watching this now. I'll definitely come back to it after work.
absolutely amazing job, man. i love it from a character design perspective and compositional view. i appreciate how your commentary is not just the sculpting process, but you insert points of improvement and critiquing your own work
I love your work! I’m not much of a sculptor anymore but the way you fix things has really made me view my art mistakes differently. I usually will scrap something so quickly but recently I’ve been doing what you do by taking a step back and deciding what can stay and what needs to be removed to be fully fixed.
Omg I would LOVE to hear more about your characters backstory’s!! You create such complex expressions of emotion in your sculpture I have to know more. Your literally so talented and I’m so envious of how you give your characters so much depth. I’m obsessed!!
15:51 the fact that the pink source lighting on her body *LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE LIGHT REFLECTIONS* messed with my mind a little lol Fantastic job!!! (The improvement is palpable)
i think i know what went wrong with the flames, it has darker tones in the top of them instead of in the bottom, if we look in real life, flames tend to be red in the bottom and gets yellower in the top. Aside from that, i just binged your videos the past couple days and now im addicted to sculpting and might be starting sculpting because of this channel. the quality of the videos are honestly super amazing and very professional, i hope you keep doing videos for ever (even tho they take a lot of time to make because sculptulres ain't fast to do) Thanks for this, i love you art, Art.
You probably wont see this comment and maybe it's too late. I don't sculpt but I paint so maybe what I say can help for the painting hair and fire: With the hair I would have recommended you spray it green and hand paint the tips purple with a very thin brush and make strokes of different lenghts. That way the green and purple wont mix into grey and the tips will have a bit of chaos. I would have also added a touch of dark green here and there at the roots of the hair and some strands to give it some volume. For the fire, the issue is the colour progression of the flames does not look natural. When you look at a candle flame you can see the bottom is black/blue then goes into a bit of brown in the center, then bright yellow around that, bright white for most of the flame and the edge is an orange . You started too light and made the top dark area (the orange) too large it just needs to be a thin layer. To create light you need to use darkness even though this seems counter intuitive. Good example of this is if you google "claire obscure painting". The paintings look like they have warm lighting because there is so much darkness in them. You should also not be afraid to add other colours. Like the flames you could use a cool dark purple on the edges and grey for the darkness on the bottom and in the deep of the edges around the faces and some flames. I hope I made sense. You are doing a wonderful job with your sculptures!
Lilac, I really enjoy watching. I am a statue painter. and watching you sculpt and talk through the entire process is very helpful in understand further to take my painting further.
Discovering your channel with this project. It's a beautiful piece. The final display/shooting is really impressive, lighting from below was the final touch to call it complete.
a great way to blend between two complementary colors(opposite sides of the color wheel) is two use a blend color that is a similar saturation but spun 90 degrees around the color wheel either direction. So in this instance with your main colors being magenta and green, you would use either an orange or a blue to blend between them. It will be a more stylized look but it can look really nice if applied well.
Lilac. This is only the second video of yours I've ever seen so I know I'm late and also that you likely won't see this, but I wanted to say that I love watching you and also that I would love to hear your thoughts about the character as a character. I'm a very very amateur visual artist (2d media mostly pencils+writing). Seeing how your thoughts come to life in your medium of choice would bring me so much joy. It's the difference between taking in the view alone versus being given a private tour by its designer.
Since you brought it up, and I'm just being informative here, Boylei Hobby Time does some great storytelling as he builds his dioramas. I always appreciate his stories, and it feels like they draw you in to the project, so it feels like the viewer is a part of the build. Plus yeah, stories are always better than just doing stuff. 😅 Great bids so far!
you you're my inspiration! I'm from Brazil and one day I'll have your level! This is my goal. Thank you for existing, God always watches over you and loves you!👍
I feel like you could've added like painted on spots when it came to the bottom of the hair to give the impression of the light of the flames kinda making her hair like reflect the light back - or adding some white to try and do something similar - cause I felt when it comes to how our hair often works, it would give off some odd colors when presented with the light source. Also, while I do love the pink flames that generally cover her, a part of me started to ponder if some of the flames could've had some green - like mainly the flames closer to her head or on certain parts of the body - kinda like how the farther the tip of a fire you go, the more there's a color difference cause of the dispersal of heat. Just an idea to help break most of the pink color so she didn't get lost in the flames and her skin color. And also also, if you ever get into any resin casting, I feel the flames could've had the capability of emitting light if they had been resin pours - had been air brushed with like oil paint to keep the translucency - while putting some light sources at the bottom so they were hidden in the stand itself.
Who knew you could fall in love with a sculpture. No but seriously she's gorgeous ❤ Great job as always. Love watching you work and hearing you talk about your vision for each piece you create. "Love your work, so that we may freely love it as well", said someone somewhere lol. I know I don't have to say that, but hearing you try to justify what you're doing because it's your art made me a little sad. It is your art, and you deserve to love and enjoy what you're doing and creating for us the viewers. I, among so many others, appreciate the passion and respect you put into each piece. That alone gives each piece so much character ❤
Fantastic work, even more fantastic improvement! Thank you for sharing. I have some suggestions... The film light should be gelled yellow-orange. This has to do with the same "muddy" effect you saw moving pink to green - you want to move around the color wheel, not through it. The specific gel I would try first is Lee 162 - Bastard Amber. You should also try CL780 AS Golden Amber and CL20 Medium Amber - which have less red/pink in the gel. The key is to experiment. Don't be put off by the color of the gel, what matters is the light coming through the gel. There will be surprises, and - with any luck - happy accidents. I would experiment with the light itself. Maybe adding a snoot or trying a projector lamp. You could also try masking off the area outside the flames. Some cookie patterns might add life there. (On a film, I'd rig a gizmo to move the cookie during the take) You were concerned that the flames overwhelmed/obscured the sculpture. You can experiment with moving the flames further from the sculpture. Maybe mount the flames separately so you can move them in small increments - because I think you will only need small adjustments to achieve the effect you desire. If this was a CG model, I'd add translucence to the flames - which reduces their visual weight. Another suggestion ... for next time. If she is spinning counterclockwise ... the base of the flames should be spinning clockwise, and then just the top should be turned by her motion towards counter clockwise. This adds dynamism, and suggests she is interacting with or controlling the flames. Like the flames had an initial velocity, and her movement changed it. Hope that was not too much. Fantastic work again! Will look for more of your stuff.
This is a masterpiece, you are a real master! Congratulations. I've already watched all your videos several times and I want to watch it again and again!
Lilac. But it looks like I'm only one of a few, LOL. I went looking for a link to bees putty in case you had an affiliate link. I also check here for tools used info, usually. Hope that feedback helps. I enjoyed seeing how far you progressed in just 3 years. Really enjoying your back catalogue and your artwork.
The sculpture is amazing! I do wish you hadn't used pink for the flames, but that's just a personal preference. I'm blown away by the detail you sculpted in her body. Well done!
Definitely a huge difference and great piece. I think maybe some pink..like neon near..streaks along some hair strands might of worked out too for those flame reflects on it. Thin lines. a streak of white as well? Hehe.
this deserves so many more likes, 61k views to a 3.8k engagement is mindblowingly bad youtube etiquette for the quality of this video. thanks for the lessons and information, this is some outstanding educational work. love the shapes you're able to convey, thanks for the help.
also with the hair, maybe putting in the lilac you were considering at the beginning before the pink to help the green/pink transition more fluid? With a lighter colour under the pink and adding one more opposing but complimentary colour, there could be a feeling of more variety or depth. And then if you were to mix deep purple with the magenta you could have even darker pinks in the flame or faces to really send home a depth to the flames. used sparingly maybe? playing with this colour combination I've found to be really challenging, so adding such light yellows to whites and purples to reds to be helpful, and applying with a paintbrush so you have contrast of sharp and soft light? 19:58
I just found your channel and it is one of the most inspiring things I watched in a long time, it makes me want to create something again after one year of not having any motivation nor energy to do so. The way you show and explain your process with all its challenges is so authentic and the results are beyond beautiful. Thank you so much for creating your RUclips channel and I am excited for your future works 😊
Lilac! Great video and an even greater sculpture! I enjoy the backstories of the characters you make as well as more technical commentary, so I suppose do what feels most fun. As for the duller transitions, I think the magenta paint might be a slightly transparent and so is being desaturated by the complementary green underneath. Undercoating after the green with an opaque, lighter colour might help (an off white would be good; for a warmer magenta - a bright yellow -, or cooler - perhaps white). Doesn't detract from the end result in any case; some brilliant art.
Beautiful work, congratulations. Regarding the paint peeling off when applying liquid mask, what I generally see other sculptors doing is applying a thin layer of matte varnish over the finished parts, this helps to isolate the work done and protect the piece itself. Do a test on your next painting and share your experience with us, please. Keep well and always focus on your health.
Lilac! I would love to hear her backstory. I’m an artist myself and hearing the backstory behind a piece or the artist statement, its something I really enjoy. I also enjoy your videos! They are very well made and all your pieces are beautiful. :)
Would love to hear your backstory on the character! Personally, she makes me think of a vengeful forest sprite, out for blood after careless humans burnt down her precious woods. Snapdragon seems like a good name for her, too!
Lilac, I love a sort of tech description in the description area :) I recently picked up traditional sculpting as I mostly sculpted digitally and it's great to see a) technique, creative choices and try and error and b) some tech tips regarding working with clay, baking it, wires, etc. i appreciate your work, cheers!
the lighting effects you're able to achieve just through paint are so impressive. i would be so interested to see you experiment with other media like molds/resin and LEDs, but the simple fact is that you are able to make impressive and believable magic effects in your sculpts without it
My spouse is a professional hair stylist-- often working with vivids and unrealistic colors in people's hair. Using hair as a canvas, transition from colors opposite on the color wheel, they leave a "white space" where you want the transition to occur, so you can feather either color into the space without them muddying each other. Hope that helps for future blending-- The sculpture is beautiful!
Great video as always ! Have you considered making a mold of the sculpted flames to make a copy in translucent resin ? Maybe it could allow you to achieve a better lighting effect if you put LEDs under it. Kind of similar to what Boylei Hobby Time does with cotton. But I don't know I don't sculpt lol
Lilac. For once the algorithm recommended something I'll actually follow! After seeing your masked shadow creature (love the video by the way) I started watching more of your videos. Beautiful work!
"Lilac" Great Video. I love your voice over, your camera angles and the whole presentation a lot. It's nice to see the journey and i think showing it part by part instead of strickt chronological is a good idea! Oh and of course i liked the sculpt a lot. I have had my own problems with the liquid varnish in the past and the main two things that help a lot are: Letting everything dry long enough (especially the foundation, i am using vallejo acrylic foundation) and more important at least 3 thin layers of varnish before masking! I prefer using glossy varnish before masking, that seems to help the best, but every varnish works for me. Using a very light green wash might help for blending pink and green together. It could give the pink a slight green hue, which would make sense, since its pink illuminated green.
The lore behind your creations would be fun to hear, but you don't need to replace your crafting/thought process with it. Behind the scenes explanations are always enjoyable for me, and you explain yourself and your projects so nicely.
Would love to hear the story. Is it just me or did you forget the drop of blood from the blade??? Beautiful job sculping it all. Amazing. I agree with you the flames take away from how amazing she looks. With the surreal pink flames and green hair maybe having her skin dark or even black would have been cool and make her stand out amongst the pink flames.
Lilac, I like the way you make your videos, the process and your thoughts around it. And I learn a lot from you. Also read the extra info, would like to know what clay you using and more. keep doing what you do, you are great.
Ah, glorious. Given we started sculpting at the same time - it clearly shows how much more practice you put into this. Your anatomy skills are beyond me. I just realized that doing armature, base clay and then moving into position is MUCH better then forcing my armature to be in a position with good proportion. So you see - yet again I've learned something from your vid. Keep it coming man!
You should have done the hair black with magenta highlights abs tips. And use UV reactant paint on the hair and flames for a cool little feature. Imagine going to bed at night and switching on a black light and you can see a nice silhouette and flames glowing
I would love to hear your story telling when it comes to your character building, I feel like we often get lost in how as opposed to the why we make our characters the way we do
I like everything about it, and your progress is very good. Well done IMHO. Two small things are missing that I expected, some blood dripping off the talon and maybe some satin or gloss varnish on the hair, eyes, mouth to further enhance realism.
Honestly it might be the geek in me, but I love how you know so much about the anatomy, even if it’s the basic parts. I definitely did the arm out pose & you’re so right lol 😅 all this to say whether or not you decide to explain the back story or explain how you sculpt in very intimate detail, your videos are still so very interesting! You’re so talented :)
I’m making an illustration that’s a similar vibe and I totally felt what you mean with the irises. I’ve been fiddling around with different eyes for weeks and just haven’t found what I’m looking for yet😩
Found your channel through North Of The Border and this was the first video that immediately caught my eye. The pinks and magenta’s and the pose of the character makes her look like a foe I would not want to challenge but admire her power from a very safe distance. You earned a sub!!
Lilac was a cool choice of flower for this character ngl, also I wouldn't mind a lore spiel, as long as it doesn't hurt you talking about your process!
for the pink tips on the hair, I would have started with spraying it with a near-white to give the pink a good base. then apply the paint transparently (if possible) or just some really light passes to get that pink tint without mixing too much with the green
This is phenomenal everything about it you're sculpting your storytelling the emotion everything is fantastic this is such a amazing piece with an amazing story
Liliac, thanks again for another amazing sculpt. I really enjoy seeing your process. Also thank you for introducing me to a new medium. I have been working in apoxie for years now and have liked it overall but have been looking for something more akin to wax in workability and I think this might be it. Looking forward to trying it out!
Honestly while the work themselves are what initially got me clicking your videos, one of my favourite things is how you explain your work, unafraid to admit mistakes and just genuinely full of passion. I would love to hear the backstories of your original characters!
Yep, totally
i totally agree, except for the mistakes part.I dont see any mistakes and i feel like he is seeing stuff.
@@aggelosaggelos5696 only the artists themselves see their own mistakes in their own works XD
Agreed!

I'm working on it :)
i love how you deal with your mistakes/things that are not perfect. its giving bob ross' happy accidents
Hey man love you're artworks and videos, it's so helpful to know both the physical and emotional process of an artwork

Great bids so far!
you you're my inspiration! I'm from Brazil and one day I'll have your level! This is my goal. Thank you for existing, God always watches over you and loves you!👍
WOW!! The final scene with the lighting is crazy!!!
And also also, if you ever get into any resin casting, I feel the flames could've had the capability of emitting light if they had been resin pours - had been air brushed with like oil paint to keep the translucency - while putting some light sources at the bottom so they were hidden in the stand itself.
i love her. she reminds me of Blue from This Is How You Loose The Time War
Lilac. I would love to learn the backstory of this fantastic sculpture. Thanks for sharing and showing. 🍻
That is fantastic! How inspiring to see so much progress in three years.
I love the way you talk about your sculpture. Its a window into the creative experience that too many social media artists "edit out"
Fantastic work, even more fantastic improvement!
(On a film, I'd rig a gizmo to move the cookie during the take)
You were concerned that the flames overwhelmed/obscured the sculpture.
Lore is always nice.
If you make this a "series", at some point you could make a stop motion Animation of it.
Well done!
Ps, I do enjoy the technical stuff and your informative insight into what exactly it is that you're doing. Good stuff.
Lilac, looking forward to the next iteration of this character after 3 years! looks awesome!
fantastic sculpt and an amazing original character design
Man, you did such a great job on this dude. Awesome work.
I need more of your videos because I watched all of them on your channel in one day. You inspired me to sculpt
Lilac, I love a sort of tech description in the description area :) I recently picked up traditional sculpting as I mostly sculpted digitally and it's great to see a) technique, creative choices and try and error and b) some tech tips regarding working with clay, baking it, wires, etc. i appreciate your work, cheers!
the lighting effects you're able to achieve just through paint are so impressive. i would be so interested to see you experiment with other media like molds/resin and LEDs, but the simple fact is that you are able to make impressive and believable magic effects in your sculpts without it
I love the movement and life in this sculpture!!!
wow totally worth 24 min. now I'm interested in sculpting.
I like the old one better. I'd love ot see a finished version of her painted.
Lilac! Love how you kept the original idea and theme while upgrading to give it new life. Almost like shes gotten more powerful since the last one
Great video as always !
Have you considered making a mold of the sculpted flames to make a copy in translucent resin ? Maybe it could allow you to achieve a better lighting effect if you put LEDs under it. Kind of similar to what Boylei Hobby Time does with cotton. But I don't know I don't sculpt lol
...another masterpiece sir.....and it would be interesting to come up with a story of the art your doing....well done Mr Chong 👍🏻
That looks great. I do wonder whether moulding and casting the flames with clear epoxy and having the lights on them only would look.
Lilac. For once the algorithm recommended something I'll actually follow! After seeing your masked shadow creature (love the video by the way) I started watching more of your videos. Beautiful work!
"Lilac"
Great Video. I love your voice over, your camera angles and the whole presentation a lot. It's nice to see the journey and i think showing it part by part instead of strickt chronological is a good idea! Oh and of course i liked the sculpt a lot.
I have had my own problems with the liquid varnish in the past and the main two things that help a lot are:
Letting everything dry long enough (especially the foundation, i am using vallejo acrylic foundation) and more important at least 3 thin layers of varnish before masking!
Awesome!!! So cool sculpting skills! Such a great quality of videos! Thank you very much for your hard work!
Amazing talent! Reminds me of witchblade
You should have done the hair black with magenta highlights abs tips. And use UV reactant paint on the hair and flames for a cool little feature. Imagine going to bed at night and switching on a black light and you can see a nice silhouette and flames glowing
I would love to hear your story telling when it comes to your character building, I feel like we often get lost in how as opposed to the why we make our characters the way we do
I do miniature conversion work and your hand sculpting ability is helping me alot
I like everything about it, and your progress is very good. Well done IMHO. Two small things are missing that I expected, some blood dripping off the talon and maybe some satin or gloss varnish on the hair, eyes, mouth to further enhance realism.
Would be very interesting to see how the flames would look if you cast them in resin and lit them from within
Honestly it might be the geek in me, but I love how you know so much about the anatomy, even if it’s the basic parts.
You could do a mix of story time and sculpting walk through. I would love to hear what inspires you.
I always love the details behind a piece and the meaning! Always talk about the backstory!
Smash
All jokes aside the detail is insane, great job. Got me wanting to start sculpting.
You make beautiful products
