      prolly depends on the region. i used to hear it up here in portland like 15 years ago but i think the californians (who pronounce it nishe) drove it out of the local accent during their mass movement up here

      Some people do, however I was taught in high school that the correct pronunciation was “neesh”. Most Americans are aware of the pronunciation discrepancy and avoid it, especially in more educated circles.

    I’m in the US and I’ve never heard an American say “nitch” only “neesh”. Wonder if it’s a regional thing? In California for what it’s worth.
    Also my wife is British so this is us all the time. We basically take shots at each other all the time over the proper way to say things 😂

    American here and I’ve never once heard anyone pronounce it “nitch”. Also “then would be pronounced ” is a horrible argument for how to pronounce things in English, where read is pronounced like lead unless it’s pronounced like lead
