@@Farzee49I agree with most of what you said. But I think that most true "artists" don't make music for white or black people strictly! It's typically record labels/execs, radio stations, and the listening public, that tend to establish the target audience for a performer...whether it is R&B or Pop mainstream. But as you said, Ms Teena Marie was definitely a super talented "SOUL SANGER" who touched our hearts. RIP TO MUSICAL SOULMATES TEENA "LADY T" & RICK JAMES💐💖💝WHO LEFT US WITH MASTERPIECES TO ENJOY.

Yes, I absolutely concur! Her whole catalog is 🔥🔥🔥 She is classic soul music royalty. She checks all the boxes because not only did she give great vocals, she wrote, arranged, produced, and played multiple instruments. In fact, minus her solo debut and its followup, she produced the rest of her albums thereafter. Her passing has left a void in music that can never be replaced. Her presence and talent is truly missed and may this "Starchild" continue to rest in heaven🌹❤

The first time I heard this song was on the radio as a kid in the 90's. It was many years later before I finally knew the name of it.
I once went to a record store and asked the clerk if he knew an oldies record that's a love song duet. I hummed the beat and told him some of the lyrics go "you were cold as ice." He was like "I know exactly what you're talking about" and brought me Vanilla Ice's "cold as ice" soundtrack. In my head I imagined myself hopping over the counter and snapping dude's neck for the blatant disrespect. In reality, my sister came and broke the tense staredown telling me our mom was waiting in the car and it was time to leave. As I was walking away dude was like "would you like me to put it on hold for you?" It was by the grace of God that I didn't back flip back to the counter and stick my foot in his mouth.
I knew of Teena Marie but I had no idea what she what she looked like. I've always loved and respected her because she was a trailblazer. There are many white artists who credibly made what's considered "black music." For example, The Righteous Brothers--"unchained melody" and "you've lost that loving feeling;" One of the greatest songs and among my personal favorites "Sara smile" by Hall and Oates; Lisa Stansfield "All around the world" and "All woman. But Teena Marie wasn't just a white artist who did what's considered black music, she was a talented and credible rnb/soul artist. That's how the fans saw her. Her race was only a factor in media discussions.
If you haven't heard Rick James sing like this then you probably havent heard "Ebony Eyes," his duet with Smokey Robinson. It's a vocal showcase much like this one. Written, produced, and arranged by Rick James.
In the spirit of black and white multi racial duets to tie it all in. Check out the amazing #1 hit "ebony and Ivory" by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney. The song's success led to Paul's later work with Michael Jackson.

This is a soul R&B masterpiece and your reaction to it is classic! Never released as a single, “Fire and Desire” album cut was probably the most played R&B radio hit of 1981. They sang this song live together shortly before he died and it too was a classic performance. It was on I believe the Soul Train award show, where Rick James famously had to remind a door keeper backstage that he was “Rick James Bit**!” Teena was one of soul music unsung premier vocalist. You should hear and react to her classic Motown album cut “Deja Vous - I’ve Been Here Before” and her No 1 RB hit “Ooo La La La” as well as “If I Were A Bell,” to really understand how great she was. I heard rumor her parents were from Brazil which means she probably had African blood somewhere in her veins. But whether she had or not, she was one of the greatest White Soul singers of all time. R.I.P - Teena Marie.
