Back in the day you actually had to have talent to get a recording contract. 🤷♀️
Real talk!
Speak!
Say dat!
Fr 😂😂
Facts…autotune was just a gimmick used for fun.
Teena was NOT to be messed with. 🔥🔥🔥
Baby boy, you weren't ready for the Lady Tee! She and Rick were music magic!
Exactly lol. He wasn't ready. He's too young.
@@trawlins396 - He's getting though.
This isn't a song, it's an experience.
Teena Marie not only did this in ONE TAKE, but she was so freaking sick that she had to be rushed via EMT to the nearest emergency room right after she laid these vocals.
Tina Marie was a force in black music in the 80's. She was 100% accepted by black folks. I know, because I was there. Mad hits, mad love. Classic song...
Like Bobby C
U nailed it
It don’t get no better than this! One of THEE greatest duets of all time!!
I am so happy he reacted to this. We need more R & B!! 🔥🔥
It really is.
Imho the greatest. And your other two?
It is the greatest duet ever. This is second to none.
Rick James dressed like that because he was Rick James. Brother did what he wanted. Sings a song like this and then sings "Super Freak".
It was the ‘80’s
Say it for the people in the back! Rick James is Rick James🔥🔥🔥
Cause he Rick James!
Why do you think he was able to say, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" 😅
And whatever Rick James do...you gone love it...'cause!!
Rick James is very underrated, but he truly an musical genius. Rick fused soul, r&b, rock and other forms of music, play so many instruments, wrote and produced. Teena Marie, all I can say is just listen to those vocals. She is played instruments.
You forgot to add Funk and Jazz!
@@SlimDaddy9 you also for got his was also called the king of punk funk.
@@brettclouse5905 I forgot about that one! Heeeeeey oh ow!
There is nothing "underrated" about Rick Janes. He was at the top of the game for YEARS.
@@brettclouse5905 exactly. Underrated is the wrong word for RJ.
If you don't have a meltdown when Teena Marie comes in, you're dead.
Fun fact Teena and Rick did this song in 1 take. Then Teena Marie had to be rushed to the hospital she had a fever and had the flu.
1 take ? Wow ! That’s talent … they made beautiful music together! And apart.
@@kashmckinney1750 they also have a song called HAPPY, check it out
Rick called her 1 Take Teena after that ☺
yeah, but it wasn't man-flu!
Wow
Teena Marie is my girl. She sang with so much passion.
Rick James was a musical monster
RICK JAMES... saved Motown records, check out Mary Jane, Ebony Eyes, and Give it to Me Baby...
Teena Marie aka Lady T aka Vanilla Child does that to everyone who listens to her for the first time. Check out her catalog of songs: Portuguese Love, Dear Lover, Square Biz, Lovergirl, Deja Vu, Ooh La La La, I Need Your Lovin and Behind The Groove!
She was a soul sista by heart!!! She had the largest African American fanbase more than any blue eyed singer!!! She was truly down for us and for our music!!!
@@mbthegreat7 Yessir
Yes she was and will always be my favorite female
songwriter- vocalist. I wore her albums out back in the day on repeat🔥
Don't forget 'Out on a Limb' in addition to the ones that you've mentioned.
I'm an avid fan forever. Named my God child after her.
This song is a masterpiece!!
Back in the day, Rick was the Super Freak, the dress was part of his thing. Teena Marie was at the very top of female R & B, she had the pipes and used them well. I had to play one of her albums on the day of her passing. Both were great singers. You should explore both of them further.
Rick James was the real deal - writer, producer, performer, and introduced many new artists including Teena Marie, known as the Ivory Queen of Soul. Rick was a character, as shown in the Chappelle Show's Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories, and he got caught up in cocaine like many did during the 80s.
I like that "Ivory Queen of Soul"
They called her the Vanilla Soul Child, get it right
Again u gave this old lady great memories and first laugh this week, thank you ♡
That’s Rick James B****!!!! One of the best slow jams ever made!!! And Teena just shut that ish down. They actually introduced us to her voice before we ever knew what she looked late. So when we saw her for the first everyone was shocked. Perfect market tool. He put her talent first. Rip to both Rick and Teena.
I remember when this song came out, and it still gives me chills to this day. Not knocking today's music but I just feel we had better music back in the day.
This song still gets to me after I haven't heard it for a while. I start tearing up when Teena comes on. It's such a powerful song.
Same here. They are both missed in this world.
Those are two legends just in case you didn't know.. Plus, Rick James is responsible for starting Teena Marie career. Real reaction.....
Two musical monsters; Rick and Teena, two of the greatest singers of their generation ❤️
Teena Marie was next to 98 Degrees the most successful White Artist to be signed to Motown. Her real name is Mary Christine Brockert who was once called The Ivory Queen Of Soul. She had more exposure in Black Magazines than White Magazines and when she did her first Album for Motown she wasn't allowed to be on The Cover because Berry Gordy The Founder & President didn't want folks to know she was White. Most White Artists who signed to Motown were dropped as quickly as Signed. Chris Clark, Linda Carter (Wonder Woman), Bruce Willis, and after Andre Harrell got fired 98 Degrees went from Motown to an O-Town Band. She gave up her career to raise her daughter Maya and also had some serious problems with prescription addiction since she hurt her back. She left for Columbia aka Sony and wasn't invited to do Motown 25 and she had other hits like Lovergirl that would be a great mashup with The Reflex by Duran Duran. She also fought for the rights of Artists many of which didn't get paid in terms of Back Royalties. To some she was the lady who kicked the door for Christina Aguilera and even Adele.
One of the sexiest songs out there! Rick and Teena were amazing together!🥰🥰
That’s a pure classic Soul Music right there. Teena Marie aka Vanilla Child aka Ivory Queen of Soul is an ICON! I know damn well Mariah grew up listening to and was by influenced by Teena as well as many other great artist there were in the 70s and 80s. You need to check out Teena’s catalog she has some bonafide bangers. Check out her song Square Bizz.
This song still gives me full body chills after all these years!!
They can SANG
This is jams, back in days! Stilled listening today’s!! This is king! Never ever forgotten!! The beautiful voice and beautiful queen!!
This song is a master piece, the chemistry Rick and Tina had was unbelievable, this song still gives me goosebumps 👍🏽
I saw them do this in person in Atlanta Georgia, an incredible performance live and in person! As good as the song was in the album, the Live performance tore the house down, just very unforgettable
So jelly!🤯👍🏾
Omni?
One of the greatest slow jams!! They did their thang!!!
Rick James was a beast back in the day, and Tina Marie had a voice that would make Angels cry! RIP to the both of you legends! Till this day no white lady ever have the Soul & Spirit she possessed
YES! What a voice Rick had…He was a Diamond 💎 Teena was a Diamond too! 💎
Rick and Teena. My top two favorite artist of all times. Bar none! So good together. So funky and soulful. My parents listened to them when I was a little kid and I have listen to them all of my life, since then. Rest assured I know the lyrics to every single Rick James and Teena Marie song there is. And I mean every single song. Teena Marie is unparalleled. I don’t think there’s a bad song in the bunch. Her vocal talent speaks for itself. Just drop the mic Teena. Rick James could sing his ass off. I had the pleasure of seeing them both in concert several times. I hope they have both been resting peacefully… It looked like they knocked you TF out with their vocals 😂
Teena Marie is an excellent musician. You should definitely check out more of her music. The album “It Must Be Magic” was hotter than FIRE.
Jammin' for the first time! Excellent song.
Best concert I ever went to was a Rick James concert. I wasn't a huge fan of his but the whole experience was so great. There were no fights. People were nice to each other. Once the show started everyone was on their feet so you couldn't see unless you stood on your chair if you had floor seats and everyone let people stand with them if they needed to. It was amazing! And of course Teena Marie was phenomenal! Music was so great back then. It's nice to see young people discovering it.
He was under rated as singer. His personality was so big. Then, the trouble he got in.
THIS is a great reaction. Your face. Lol. Dude I didn’t even know he could sing. This was nice for sure. 🔥👍🏻
It's so funny watching 20 year olds react to this song😂
Word ... cute and funny.😄
I feel eternally blessed to have been born in the 80s and grow up on this music. Teena and Rick are sorely missed.
You’re reaction was the best...
Rick James... substance &style with Teena matching in talent. It was 40years ago and need more pure singers like this today.
They did this song in one take! Lady Teena was sick with a high fever. After one take, she went to the ER! Back in the day, you actually had to have real talent to get music deals!
I believe she was in the hospital and she left to go record the song. She is the 👑 G.O.A.T!!
@@lisalisaimhere they say after they recorded she went back teena Maria is so brave lol…
May Lady T & Rick James both rest in peace. They were both super talented artists. "Ghetto Life" is one of my favorite songs of all time. And Lady T's "Portuguese Love" and "Square Biz"? SUPER JAMS!
This song blows me away still!! Rick was a musical genius! Teena was fire! As for his style, that was funk in the seventies! If you think his style was wild check out Parliment/ Funkadelic! They were wild!😂❤️❤️
Im going to search reaction to parliament funkadelics i remember them in college 1979
Teena Marie's voice was before her time and she could burn up a tenor saxophone 🎷 too! May they both RIP...Teena 🌼🌼🌼
When Teena Marie came in😂😂😂couldn’t wait! One of the sexiest songs of all time
Listen to Teena’s voice absolutely blows me away 👍👏👏👏👏💟👍☮️😎😎
Saw them live together in 1983.🔥I requested this go thank your patron for agreeing with me. RIP Rick and Tina
They were lovers and it comes across in the production.
Rick 🔥 was a producer, singer, guitar 🎸 player. He had his own style like many artists.
React to Teena Marie 🔥my favorite all time female vocalist!
Portuguese in Love
Lover Girl
and many more
His vocals shine through when he sings ballads. You have to hear “Ebony Eyes” with Smokey Robinson. Straight fire. I loved your reaction!
Oh, and about the way he we dressed. 80s artists gave zero cares about what people thought about the way they dressed. Look at Cameo, and even Prince. That whole Minneapolis vibe was crazy!
You should listen to “Out on a Limb” by Teena. You won’t be disappointed!
yesss!
Rick James was an extremely talented singer Songwriter musician and producer. He was the nephew of The Temptations Melvin Franklin. He also wrote and produced some Temptations songs."Standing on the top",is one that I like.R.I.P. Rick James and Teena Marie.Beautiful vocals.
You know what I dig about your reactions Twon, is that you are listening to more than just the vocals, but other pieces of the songs that most would overlook. I know these songs are makin' 'ya feel something, and that's what a lot of this music does.
My life has been evolved in immense love for the deep resounding voices of this Era. I'm 62, and I can hear this song as if it were my first time. I get teary, I get excited as it meshes into a wonderfulness of emotion. I love your expressions Twon, you will learn to love these two legends together and apart. May they RIP. I miss them dearly.
Please please please react to Teena Marie’s “Square Biz”, “Behind The Groove” or “Lovergirl”; all are pure 🔥 and you will hear what we JAMMED to in 1980/81!!!
R.I.P. Rick James and Teena Marie. Two extraordinary musicians/ Producers gone to soon. Teena Marie was the first (and I think onl) white female to hit number on the Motown Label.
Check out the duet Rick James has Smokey Robinson called “Ebony Eyes”.
Yes that's a great song to react to
Forgot about that one. Thx.
Oh yes
Yes, please do!
You've got to hear Rick James 'SING' with the legendary Smoky Robinson. Their song is "Ebony Eyes", and you've got to hear
Teena Marie SING "Portuguese Love", "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)" and "Oh La La La". These songs are going to blow your mind, paralyze your face, take your breath away, give you eargasms...all of these!!! Get ready!
Peace...Be and Stay Safe!!!!
You felt every note 😂😂😂
Teena Marie best white female singer i've herd
Ever!!!!!
I remember skating to this song as a teenager during a couples olny skate. This song was the ultimate panty dropper back in the day!
The #1 slow jam of the 80’s, from the hottest album of 1981, Rick James “ Street Songs” , I was 20 when it came out, this whole album was the soundtrack of every young African American that year , it was blazing hot on the radio stations, the boom boxes , car stereos, and of course in the clubs! Good memories from a 60 year old Old Schooler , this is how we did it all day! Enjoy and hope your generation make new slow jams like this and slow dance again!
It makes me so happy to see youngers like you learn what real Singing and music is all about
This was true 80's R&B music. Their voices were honey coated... Rick had the ladies Sprung back in the day
Someone I know had the nerve to tell me she couldn’t sing. One of my favorite songs ever.
It doesn't get better than this! You must explore both of these artists in full - Rick James "Mary Jane", :Ebony Eyes" (with Smokey Robinson), "Super Freak" and "You And I." Teena Marie: "Behind The Groove", "Square Biz", "Salutes Smokey Robinson ("Ooo Baby Baby"), "Ooo La La" and "I Need Your Lovin'" You will not be disappointed!
OMG! Twon! Your reaction to this one was priceless! 🤭😮😂 Enjoyed that one. I got to check out more Teena Marie, wow! #NoLimitNation
Check out 'Jammin' and 'Midnight Magnet.'
IMHO. One of the greatest songs ever made. Just listen to those voices!
Best reaction ever! I'm pretty sure thousands of babies were made during this song. I saw them together not long before Rick died.. They were just awesome..
I enjoyed watching you discover one of my favorite songs from back in the day. You had me cracking up! 😂
THIS WAS LEGIT THE BEST BEST BEST EVER REACTION TO THIS SONG - AND IVE WATCHED COUNTLESS! WHEN YOU SAID THE SIDE OF YOUR FACE WAS PARALYSED😱 WHEN TINA CAME ON THAT WAS PRICELESS! THAT CRACKED ME UP🤣🤣🤣! YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS THROUGHOUT SAID IT ALL... THAT TUNE TOOK YOU ON JOURNEY - MESSED YOU UP - PROPPA! 🤣🤣🤣💃🏾🕺🏻. I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING!👍🏾
Thanks for this! I’m 70 and never heard this before 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow...Really?!?! Your old enough to be my father and even I know what a Classic Song this is! This was a MAJOR hit!!!
I think I was raising kids and working in those years. Or maybe I just don’t remember some things so great because I was high a lot 😂😂. I’m glad I finally heard it tho, and that’s what I’m here for ☮️🌼♥️🇺🇸
You can see Teena Marie on Soul Train singing "Behind The Groove" and "I Need Your Lovin".
Great reaction if you want to listen to another good song that actually shows off Rick James vocals try "Ebony eyes"
Oh yes that is a good song! I forgot about that one.
And you get Smokey too
Yes! That’s that magic!
he also made a song i know u habe heard...they use it in all the weed movies like friday, how high...the song is MARY JANE
This is the Slow Jam of Slow Jams!!! You can't say you like Slow Jam Saturday or the Quiet Storm if you ain't on that Fire & Desire by Rick & Lady T. This the closer right here. This track playing after a date when you get back to the spot, you getting asked to come up for some coffee! This playing on the way to a date, you may not make it out the car without them windows being fogged all the way up!
#NoLimitNation! 🔥
You will *LOVE* "Square Biz" by Teena Marie. Her rapping and singing together will blow your mind (and make you stand up, no cap)!
I like the volume/clarity that your songs play with; it makes the song sound brand new. That's how songs should be examined! This song reminds me of an R&B opera the way it is sung and the "robustness" of Rick and Teena's voices. My favorite part is the end when they wind the song down--Rick is talking but Teena is still softly singing and while they don't get back together, they have a tender moment and you know the love will always be there.
Rick James was a incredible singer it's really a shame he left us early!!!
Yes! One my all time favorite duets. You should see their live performance - the chemistry is explosive!
A truly immortal duo - the greatness blows away todays ridiculous auto tune mess.
Rick James is the essence of composing music
This song right here!!! Right here! This is my all time favorite ever ever EVER ballad! I saw them in concert performing and OMG ladies needed a blow dryer by the time they got done performing. (use your imagination. lol) They were FIRE together!
2 of the Greatest... R.I.P. Legends!! Check Out: Rick James - "Teardrops" ..&.. Teena Marie - "Young Love" ...
In the same vein Teddy Pendergrass "Love TKO", Al Green, Barry White are phenomenal black vocalists from 70-80 worth lostening to.
This song is just CHILLS all the way through. 🥶
Rick James is my all time favorite ..... You should a Rick James week, start from busten out to his last song... I know I will be watching !!!!
Musical POETIC Fusion AT IT'S BEST!!!! Stops you dead in your tracks, don't it? This is 100 percent, unapologetic old school GREATNESS!!! Standing ovation kind of music right here. Enjoyed your reaction. ❤🔥💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
One of the greatest songs of all time
He dressed like that because he was Rick James, Dammit! A lot of 70s and 80s artists were very flamboyant. We ain’t gonna even talk about the 60s. Wait until you see George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, David Bowie, La Belle, K.C. and The Sunshine Band. Hell, even The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds(who were Mormons). I could go on, but tired of typing right now.
lakeside, gap band…
@@samanthanickson6478 YES M’am! Thank you for giving tired fingers assistance! Also, how did I not include Earth, Wind and Fire! The Commodores(back when Lionel Richie was Funky), Ohio Players.
Girl, I need to look up what happened to The Brides of Funkenstein. I am slacking on my P-Funk research!
Prince.
@@breebarry4422 😆 i hear you!! there were sooo many bands with the flavor that it's hard to name them all, but not too hard to tell 'em that flamboyance didn't begin and end with rick. "they gon learn today!" 😆
"I'm Rick James, b!tch!" That was Rick James's own style, nobody else dressed like him. You got to do "Super Freak". . Well, yeah he can sing! They made jokes about Elvis too and he could sing! The jokes came because of the troubles he had. But he was a badass!
Great description, so true! Thank you!
This track is iconic and I loved your reaction. Took me way back to a time when music actually had meaning 🥰
There is a live version of them singing this song together you should find it and check it out
You want to hear a female voice with range? Try Minnie Riperton. She'll blow your mind.
Marty, are you hip to Rotary Connection? Minnies early group. Check out her vocals in that.
Teena was godmother to actress /comedian Maya Rudolph, Minnie Ripperton's daughter. You can hear her voice as a young girl on Teena's "Too Many Colors" .
Millie Jackson
Saw Rick James in concert back in the day…what a show!!!
This is back when people could sing and actually had talent..
Please react to Pebbo Bryson's "Feel the Fire" it will blow you mind. You'll be ready to find someone to love you right
I wrote same thing months ago

Can you stop the rain…..

Rick James was a master creative. He did just sing this song. He wrote, arranged it and produced it as with most of his music. He is a true musician and a Hollywood Legend of the 80's.
Teena Marie is ASMR before it was popular. The woman is a vocal goddess. Very few could stand next to her. Listen to her song Portuguese Love. She sends chills through your body.
She had an awesome voice
Your face at 8:21 SAID IT ALLLLL! 😝😭😂 Yep! Rick already messed with your mind now here come Teena destabilising your reality huh! Great reaction!!
Man, you funny because you so young sounding. It's good that you're appreciating something that 2 generations ago already knew. There was not a party that I went to that they didn't play this or Always and Forever by Heatwave
