Only way to not put this as the song anymore is if there’s another song that is about Maryland. Maybe at that point. We’ll have two state songs. There are some states that have more than one song. It’ll be cool if MD does that.

    Maryland, C.S.A.
    Maryland, My Maryland
    I
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
    Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
    Maryland!
    Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    II
Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
    Maryland!
My mother State! to thee I kneel,
    Maryland!
For life and death, for woe and weal,
    Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    III
Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
    Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
    Maryland!
    Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
    Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    IV
Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
    Maryland!
    Come with thy panoplied array,
    Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
    With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    V
Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
    Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
    Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
    Stalking with Liberty along,
And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    VI
Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
    Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
    Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
"Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain
    That baffles minions back again,
    Maryland!
    Arise in majesty again,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    VII
I see the blush upon thy cheek,
    Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
    Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
    Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    VIII
Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
    Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
    Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
    Than crucifixion of the soul,
    Maryland! My Maryland!
    IX
    I hear the distant thunder-hum,
    Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
    Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
    Maryland! My Maryland!

Actually not Lincoln did what he had to do the ONLY logical thing he could do.
Even small there was the risk that Maryland could have seceded then DC would have been geographically unfit as a capitol for the Union.
It was a very lousy even criminal thing to do but what else could he have done?

Lee. As a matter of fact, we recognize the star directly in the center of Boregaurds battle flag as Maryland's star. She'll always be a true southern state, and one day perhaps she'll even be free

At 1:59, the tyrant is Abraham Lincoln. And according to the !860 census half the Blacks in Maryland were free. They could have easily have escaped to Pennsylvania but they knew they weren't wanted there, and they had good lives in Maryland. Maryland was against secession, but they were also against Maryland being use as a staging ground for an invasion of the South.

    • @MrBassmann15
      @MrBassmann15 2 года назад

Western and Central Maryland were against secession, but Southern and Eastern Maryland were all for it, including the city of Baltimore. Those areas are were most of the Confederate Marylanders are from. Maryland did abolish slavery in 1864 before the ratification of the 13th amendment though.

I love this song. The Civil War was the darkest time in our nation's history. To end the dieing practice of slavery we needed to loose a generation of young men, leave a third of the nation in ashes, and in places like Maryland the Constitution was thrown out the window. We have healed, but the atrocities committed should never be forgotten.
Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not anti-Union, but anti-war. Both sides had unjust motives, and committed war crimes to advance their agenda. Maryland was caught in the middle, and neither side showed respect for the desire of many Marylanders to be left in peace.

there were a lot of causes for the Civil War, but people only remember the slavery issue. Even there people don't take into account how slavery effected the wider issues of representative government.

The south said that they would leave if Lincoln won because his policies would mean the end of slavery. They couldn't stand to follow the law that would make slavery illegal in the new territories acquired by the Mexican war. The south made sure that their "constitution" included the right to own slaves. The south wanted to hold on to their Empire. Many deserters in the Confederate army because they didn't want to have to fight for the rich man's slaves. No, it wasn't a "latter excuse". The south made it clear that they needed their slaves and why else did they secede? They were desperate to hold on to the only thing that made them special. They weren't seceding and fighting to the death for the hell of it. They were frantic to hold on to the only privilege they had.

Sounds like Oh Christmas Tree to me! Actually, being born in raised as a child in Maryland, I heard this song before I EVER heard Oh, Christmas Tree! I live in Arizona now, this makes me a bit homesick. This is historical, Arizona's song tells about it's beauty. Both are great!

I'm a pro unionist, but I love this state anthem even if it talks badly about the north. we're all Americans and we all need to stick together. and I love the freedom we have here in the United states to where we can even talk badly about our own country in a state official anthem, another example (Mississippi flag). this is our history and culture and I love it, do I agree with the south trying to succeed no I don't but that's over and we all need to look into the future instead of looking into the past as a means to give credit to an alternative, instead look at the past to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors.

If you google "which is the worst state anthem" the first result puts this one on top, & I completely disagree.
The website (rateyourmusic [dot] com) takes the usual pot-shot at Maryland's flag (everyone likes to pick on Maryland, presumably because it was founded by Catholics). It then explicitly says that it is racist, which completely flies over my head. A quick google turns up that it was written in advocacy of Maryland joining the Confederacy. I could debate whether or not such a viewpoint is racist, but that is surely for a time other than 24:35 GMT.
In any case, I don't think that something which claims to be objective ranking should take into account matters such as the viewpoint which a work was created to express. That would be like banning countries from the Olympics on the basis of their domestic civil rights legislation. It's not how equality works.
As for my view on the state anthem of Maryland, I have heard better but I have also heard far worse. The quality of the poetry is formidable; it's just a shame they had to set it to O Tannenbaum, which is a great song, but not a good fit for the bellicose lyrics. To summarise, the lyrics are from Mars & the music is from Venus.
