@@battlepans1927 Maryland was a slave owning state that almost chose to join the confederacy. This song is a perfect example of the disgusting shameful history of Maryland and you are a perfect example of how Americans refuse to hold history accountable even when staring reality in the face.
At 1:59, the tyrant is Abraham Lincoln. And according to the !860 census half the Blacks in Maryland were free. They could have easily have escaped to Pennsylvania but they knew they weren't wanted there, and they had good lives in Maryland. Maryland was against secession, but they were also against Maryland being use as a staging ground for an invasion of the South.
Western and Central Maryland were against secession, but Southern and Eastern Maryland were all for it, including the city of Baltimore. Those areas are were most of the Confederate Marylanders are from. Maryland did abolish slavery in 1864 before the ratification of the 13th amendment though.

There's no way I can take the Maryland state song seriously when my brain can only hear the Norwegian version about a really happy bus driver hahahah
I love this song. The Civil War was the darkest time in our nation's history. To end the dieing practice of slavery we needed to loose a generation of young men, leave a third of the nation in ashes, and in places like Maryland the Constitution was thrown out the window. We have healed, but the atrocities committed should never be forgotten. Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not anti-Union, but anti-war. Both sides had unjust motives, and committed war crimes to advance their agenda. Maryland was caught in the middle, and neither side showed respect for the desire of many Marylanders to be left in peace.

The south said that they would leave if Lincoln won because his policies would mean the end of slavery. They couldn't stand to follow the law that would make slavery illegal in the new territories acquired by the Mexican war. The south made sure that their "constitution" included the right to own slaves. The south wanted to hold on to their Empire. Many deserters in the Confederate army because they didn't want to have to fight for the rich man's slaves. No, it wasn't a "latter excuse". Oh Christmas Tree is a famous Christmas song here. As a Marylander I think using Oh Tannenbaum for such a martial song is hilarious. Also I hate this is still the state song. Maryland is one of the most liberal states in the country. We don't hate Lincoln anymore.
Tough battle tested soldiers saved this country from Britain twice. First during the battle of long island and again during battle of Baltimore. For the Baltimore Ravens to kneel for our anthem and stand for God save the queen is friggin beyond pathetic.
I'm a pro unionist, but I love this state anthem even if it talks badly about the north. we're all Americans and we all need to stick together. and I love the freedom we have here in the United states to where we can even talk badly about our own country in a state official anthem, another example (Mississippi flag). this is our history and culture and I love it, do I agree with the south trying to succeed no I don't but that's over and we all need to look into the future instead of looking into the past as a means to give credit to an alternative, instead look at the past to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors.
I knew the comments on this one would come in hot as morning turds! Maryland's complicated history is worth hearing about. Also, come to the President Street Station MD Civil War Museum! We would love to have you tomorrow! 10am-4pm.
Picture, let's say, an army of stone-faced, dead serious Russians at a military parade singing their anthem to the melody of "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer". This is how it sounds to people who only know it as "Oh Tannenbaum".
If you google "which is the worst state anthem" the first result puts this one on top, & I completely disagree. The website (rateyourmusic [dot] com) takes the usual pot-shot at Maryland's flag (everyone likes to pick on Maryland, presumably because it was founded by Catholics). It then explicitly says that it is racist, which completely flies over my head. A quick google turns up that it was written in advocacy of Maryland joining the Confederacy. I could debate whether or not such a viewpoint is racist, but that is surely for a time other than 24:35 GMT. In any case, I don't think that something which claims to be objective ranking should take into account matters such as the viewpoint which a work was created to express. That would be like banning countries from the Olympics on the basis of their domestic civil rights legislation. It's not how equality works. As for my view on the state anthem of Maryland, I have heard better but I have also heard far worse. The quality of the poetry is formidable; it's just a shame they had to set it to O Tannenbaum, which is a great song, but not a good fit for the bellicose lyrics. To summarise, the lyrics are from Mars & the music is from Venus.

Proud to say I’m a Maryland. Living in Hagerstown - not so much
Tough battle tested soldiers saved this country from Britain twice.
First during the battle of long island and again during battle of Baltimore. For the Baltimore Ravens to kneel for our anthem and stand for God save the queen is friggin beyond pathetic.
Maryland, my Maryland!
Hetty Cary's sister, Jenny, is the one who picked the music to go with the lyrics of the famous poem.
And where do those extra verses come from?
I'm a pro unionist, but I love this state anthem even if it talks badly about the north. we're all Americans and we all need to stick together. and I love the freedom we have here in the United states to where we can even talk badly about our own country in a state official anthem, another example (Mississippi flag). this is our history and culture and I love it, do I agree with the south trying to succeed no I don't but that's over and we all need to look into the future instead of looking into the past as a means to give credit to an alternative, instead look at the past to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors.
Milkman I totally agree. Even the union made mistakes during, before, and after the war. This song shows the spirit of america
Right, but we need to remember the lessons of the past. And not to glorify traitorous slavers.
From Oregon, thought this song was about the War of 1812
My Maryland
Baltimore use to be a different place😔

I knew the comments on this one would come in hot as morning turds! Maryland's complicated history is worth hearing about. Also, come to the President Street Station MD Civil War Museum! We would love to have you tomorrow! 10am-4pm.
Go Ravens! Go Orioles! Go Terps! Eat blue crabs, and put plenty of Old Bay seasoning on them.
my history teacher made my class to listen to this.

Maryland should be a country
The Song sort of sounds like Christmas Tree O Christmas Tree
Picture, let's say, an army of stone-faced, dead serious Russians at a military parade singing their anthem to the melody of "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer".
This is how it sounds to people who only know it as "Oh Tannenbaum".
You mean, Lauriger Horatius?
it should be Good Morning Baltimore now
If you google "which is the worst state anthem" the first result puts this one on top, & I completely disagree.
Considering the hatemongering these days they are probably going to ban this song as well along with everything else in the South.
Yeah. Political correctness is destroying America. I REFUSE to be politically correct. It's dividing Americans.
+SHADOWWOLF77 already are doing it as of soon its in the news today ! if its banned download repost repeat whether you are banned or not do the same !
Rat Trap supervisor
True but there are people that wish to change this song for example to one more "loyal" version.
+SHADOWWOLF77 yea all this PC crap will be the death of the nation if it doesn't change soon
Rat Trap supervisor
Exactly it is sadly strong with political correctness only in the western world.
