    The Salton Sea was created in the early 1900s after a heavy rain caused the Colorado River to burst through the banks of an irrigation canal, sending millions of gallons of water into a previously dried out lake bed in the California desert. It's returning to it's original state.

      Looks like water level is rising due to picnic tables. Massive amounts of water from canals flow into the lake. Not sure if lake is getting smaller.

    Hi Carolyn, I enjoyed your video of the Salton Sea. I am a CA native of 59 yrs who moved to GA two years ago. I perk up when I see anything dealing with CA. I was a 30+ resident of Lake Elsinore, CA. For about a month now I have became intrigued on learning more from you and Bob on how to live a nomad lifestyle. More so on you as your a single woman traveling alone most times. I hope to meet the both of you one day. Keep the videos coming as I'm drinking them up like water. God Bless

    A friend and I discovered the Salton Sea last spring when we drove from Sun City West to see the desert bloom in Anza-Borrego. Being from Michigan, we thought it was a beautiful lake and we decided to check it out on our way back to AZ. We could not believe that it wasn't more built up (the beautiful lakes in Michigan are usually surrounded by lovely lake homes and cabins). THEN we got out of the car... Whoa! That smell!! We definitely figured out why it wasn't more built up and touristy. It really is beautiful from a distance, though.

    I was at Salton Sea in '80..made friends with alot of retired college professor and their families there. The smell also comes from volcanic material..I found alot of it there besides the dead fish. They told me there was only one kind of fish that lived in the water and was so briny you couldn't really eat it. All the homes I visited were made of recycled materials and were very cool..but alot has changed as I noticed on the news..its a posionous and dangerous area to be in..such a shame it was pretty nice at one time. Hope you get to Mexico..I love Baja..always had a great time there. Safe travels, Carolyn!! :)

While driving his caterpillar, he ran over his own dog by accident. He was totally heartbroken for years. Lots of history about the different areas within the Basin involving movie stars, country clubs and trailer parks. Have fun exploring it all.

    As for the salton sea: any body of water with high salinity is created by evaporation. Basically you have water running in, but no water running out. The water evaporates leaving minerals - mostly salt - behind. More water flows in - more evaporation etc. etc.
    The dead fish in the salton sea stem from algae blooms which are promoted by agricultural runoff. The algae use the oxygen in the water, thus suffocating the fish. That's the reason why it isn't stinky all the time. Algae die, fish die, new oxygen comes in, fish thrive, algae thrive killing the fish - rinse and repeat.
    BTW: the Gulf of Mexico has a 9 mile dead zone at the delta of the Mississippi. That's what fertilizer runoff from the massive corn fields gives you.

    LOVE THAT HAT, Carolyn! You're exactly right about the Salton Sea - Very high salinity = increased buoyancy. Agricultural runoff has promoted algae growth and killed much of the aquatic life that was in there. Unfortunately, it's a horrible testament to overuse of chemicals in agriculture, effectively killed by the concentration of toxins. ("Saline" is the right word, BTW).
    What is the theme music that you're using? It's pretty cool.
    Did you know that Algodones means "cottons"? Algodón is the word for cotton.
    Thanks for the look around! Always meant to take a look at the Imperial Valley and the Salton Sea; never got to.
    Have you been to Slab City yet? Supposedly a very quirky commune of RVers and others, built on the site of a former military base. Would love to see your assessment of it!
    LOVE, and can't wait for your vlogs! Please keep it up.

    Carolyn,
    If you are still in the area stop at the Sony Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. It's at the intersection of W Sinclair and Gentry roads. Google marks it a little off. It's right next to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife. One of the men at the visitor's center has an excellent understanding of the Salton Sea and the geology of the surrounding area. He can explain the thermals used by Cal Edison to generate electricity. Also while you are there. sit under the veranda and have a picnic. You can listen to all the birds.
    Thank you for the videos. I enjoy them immensely.

I still have quite a few Pumice Stones which used to float free on the lake. My sister bought a lot, ha ha, out there and we had a friend who lived there approx 1999 so I spent time in that area. There are the best small rock formations in the desert surrounding the lake. We use to go "rocking". Some looked like curled up snakes. We loved the perfect little round ones and tried to collect them in descending order. It smelled foul then. They also had pelican die offs as well. Nostalgic video for me, thanks. Next time you are there look for those rocks.

    I remember reading an article in a 1958 True West (magazine) about an unusual character who roamed the West. It was titled Mystery Man of Mullet Island. (Salton Sea) Apparently he was very interested in the Donner Party and tracking their "ill-fated" journey across the West. He had the ability to literally sniff out their old campsites according to the author. He also resided, I think, in later years on Mullet Island. Been wanting to learn more about him. I've got a copy of the article in my files somewhere.

    Hi Carolyn from Nick Wiese: I hope you will get the solar stuff I sent soon, I must say it is necessary to use the proper flux with solder. Acid flux core solder is a no no as is plumbing flux for copper pipe as the acid can eat through the smaller multi strand wires in 3 months to 6 months, it is not the solder that fails it is the wires are eaten through on smaller wires. I had a plastic handle break on a battery charger and I soldered a spare one on with no trips to the store as i made do and got it working. good luck, Nick W.

    • @RV-there-Yet
      @RV-there-Yet 7 лет назад +1

      Hey! I was thinking about that too~ wondering how some of those roundish bits might look sprinkled with some finely ground abalone shell, for a little sparkle? If they are super fragile, and I imagine they are, maybe a person could strengthen with some sort of clear coat spray or?? Funny where the mind wanders when we see stuff like that, and I'm not even an artsy crafty person - I wish- but I do love jewelry!

    • @vanessaboman8143
      @vanessaboman8143 7 лет назад +1

      @RV there yet - oh yes there are several types of clear spray and gels that can be used for strengthening those little bone bits... wow if I ever get to that place I might get me some fishbone bits for jewellery making.. so now I am gonna look around me to see what else can be used for jewellery .. I have plenty of wire and threads and strings for this but need to get some more bead cups and stuff... I love arts and crafts and making stuff from finds an junk... and ya know something you can learn to be artsy ... I didn't know I had an artistic bone in my body til I did a calligraphy course some 20 odd years ago and it led me to all sort of things.. when I get into my rig I will need storage for all my bits and pieces, and find me a way to sleep suspended from the ceiling :) ... so if ya wanna try it just do it and see what you can do...

    • @RV-there-Yet
      @RV-there-Yet 7 лет назад +3

      Vanessa, I like the way you think! You're absolutely right~ just because I have not been, does not mean that I may not be, really good point:) So now I just have to know about the "sleeping suspended from the ceiling" part of your reply~ only because I have always loved hammocks, the swing ride at carnivals, etc., -anything that makes me feel weightless and buoyant~also maybe unreachable??

    • @vanessaboman8143
      @vanessaboman8143 7 лет назад +1

      and free, that high place is freedom too... above the earth and free... I like the be on a firm foundation when I sleep.. but saw a guys camp in the woods a few years ago where his tent was suspended over some boggy ground and assessable only by his draw bridge thingy... he slept suspended , high above the floor of his suspended tent... so there are limitless ways to sort this 'problem' out... just need to think outside the box... so lets see what and where this all leads eventually... we might invent something unique and also make and sell strange fish bone jewellery :) ... nice meeting ya on here...

    So your interesting discovery of fish "sand" inspired me to research the phenomenon. Seasonal winds bring up water from deep in the lake that has very little oxygen. This causes mass fish die offs on a periodic basis. The lake is basically rotten fish soup that gets stirred occasionally. Lovely. I'll pass on the refreshing dip, thanks.

    I think when the canal first overflowed creating the lake, they use to have freshwater fish in it like Northern Pike. Then it just got saltier, 30 years ago it was a trophy corbina lake, then now there is a only tilapia. They get massive blooms and die outs of tilapia, tilapia have the ability to grow really dense, basically this lake could probably feed California, you could catch tilapia by the barrel full. Soon it will be too salty for tilapia. I think they should section a small piece off that has no inlet and water will flow into it due to evaporation loss allowing the rest of the lake to get fresh. Have a free 14 day blm camp on the berm.
    In 5,000 years ago it was a natural lake as a bend in Colorado filled the lake and there are ancient fish traps in Palm Springs used by indians.

    Don't know who you got your info about how it was created, but not correct never part of Gulf of CA. Please google Salton Sea Historical info. There haven't been speedboats since 1960' I know because my family raced boats there.. It has no source of freshwater only runoff from big ag. The smell is the sulphur blooms, not fish smell. Major source of habitat for Pacific Flyway Birds. Blame the US govt for the mishandling of this precious area which is now in jeopardy! Wish you would have been able to appreciate the beauty that is there.

    That is horrible that it is so toxic that fish can not live in it and seeing that makes me sad. I was thinking that I hope Capone don't eat nothing and get sick. Hate to hear he is deaf. I had a poodle that was going deaf and she developed diabetes and I had to put her down last year. I had her 12 1/2 years. Have safe travels to your next destination and hope your dental work goes okay. God Bless

      Levy Gant it was very hard decision but I was not going to be selfish and make her suffer with shots daily. Losing her 1 year ago on Feb. 11th. I cried all day. I got another puppy around end of May and she is so much like my Shandie. This one is a yorkie though and she is precious also. I am so glad I did get her cause my sister passed on June 6th. She had been battling terminal cancer 4 years. She went in hospital same day I had to put my girl down. Last year was really tough

    Carolyn,
    I could yell you were headed toward the Salton Sea when you were on the move in your previous video (I think I recognized Box Canyon Road). I hope you took the time to visit Borrego Springs and, specifically, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It's a wonderful place to visit and hike -- the Borrego Palm Canyon trail with palm tree oasis and/or Hellhole Canyon trail with 20 foot Maidenhair waterfall are must-see/hike trails!
    If you haven't been there yet it's just 35 miles west of the Salton Sea (40 minutes) via the Borrego Salton Sea Way. It's well worth the drive.
    Here's a link to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park website:
    www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638
    And a link to the trails website:
    www.hikespeak.com/ca-desert/anza-borrego-desert-state-park/
    Just be careful to stay on the paved roads if you go this weekend as they've posted this advisory:
    "STORM WARNINGS: NOAA has issued both High Wind and Flash Flood Advisories for this weekend. With many dirt roads in the park already saturated from previous rains, visitors are advised to avoid travel in the backcountry. Roads that receive lots of rain often become impassable due to deep mud that can be sticky and/or slippery, making navigation difficult, even with four-wheel-drive."
    I love your RV life (thank you SO MUCH)!!! Have fun, be happy, be free and be kind!
    Mike

      P.S. If I remember correctly, the park roads that access those two trails are real close to the Visitors Center and are paved. :-)

  • @MJintheUSA

    Although there are certainly fish bones to be found in the Salton Sea's beaches, they are made up primarily of barnacle shells. When Carolyn holds up a handful to the camera, you can clearly make out the tiny little shells, just like the ones you see clustered on the rocks when you visit the ocean. Barnacles thrive in the hypersaline conditions. Growth clusters are broken off the bottom during storms, and transported to the beach and pulverized by wind and waves. This unique barnacle accumulation is the only known lacustrine, barnacle-dominated shoreline and possesses some surface features that are exclusive to this beach setting
