Pedals truly can be amazing magical collaborators. Hope you enjoyed this episode of Tonal Teamwork. If you did, then please consider leaving a like or a comment. You're also more than welcome to share the vid with your friends. Every action means more than you could possibly imagine. As always, thank you for being epically awesome!
There really is zero need to even listen to five seconds before giving Stefan's videos a thumbs up. There's never been a bad one, and most have been just awesome... This was no exception...
That is so kind of you. I'm just really stoked to hear you find some value and new insight in the videos I create. Keeps me motivated to keep creating ☺🙏
@@thepedalzone I'd be glad to send you our upcoming delay pedal, it's almost ready for production... It has the option to blend out the "dry" input, and output only the delayed signal, which would lend itself to this direction of sound sculpting! cheers joe / jdm pedals
I just started listening to "Music for Airports" while writing and I was like I want to figure out how to do this with pedals. I do a quick google search and, of course, Stefan pops up. No idea why I didn't simply search here first. This is exactly what I wanted. Thanks so much for doing this!
this is so inspiring i was wondering if stuff like this is possible with guitar and pedals. seeing olafur arnalds doing whole pieces with two self-playing pianos... and here we are. first step. already got ideas for this to evolve further with superego and pitchshifting algos by eventide. thank you!
I'm deeply in awe of and inspired by Ólafur Arnalds and the way he combines classic instruments and modern technology. And I'm completely humbled by the fact that you enjoyed this video and found inspiration in it. Thank you so much. Your EHX Superego is gonna crazy cool for something like this ☺👍
Really nice Stefan, you are a true Abienator....You are really good at this. Your passion and love of music always shows through no matter what the video! I know I've already commented but I have to do it again. Lol
Absolutely beautiful. Loved how you split the stereo into two different pedals and then combined them in the AR. I've always wanted to do something like that, but you seem to have perfected it!
Thank you so much! 😊🙏 And yeah, there’s so many cool possibilities when you start running split stereo signal with different effects in the left and right channel. Can really conjure some unique textures 😊🌊
I cannot thank you enough Stefan for sharing this. This was the link I was missing for my music. I have been using Bloom and other apps as well as similar pedals for sound generation, even recording and looping my own local sounds, but the lightbulb just lit up. You are doing amazing things by sharing, truly a wonderful time we live in, thank you.
I'm incredibly honored to hear that the video gave you some new inspiration and insight. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Means the world to me 🙏
An absolutely beautiful example of what you can achieve with just a few pedals. I will certainly be looking into the apps you mention at the top of the video!
Exactly, I've split them, so the two sequences don't affect each other. If you don't run a stereo setup, then you can also use a signal splitter like the Old Blood Noise Signal Splitter or KMA Tyler to use them in parallel, so the two sequences won't confuse each other.
Being new to "generative music" this video has me thinking these and maybe other pedals are like creating a Eurorack synth. The Arpanoid is especially interesting, plus now i understand why Meris pedals were created. So i learned something here. Thank you.
This is why I'm subbed. Kick ass video man! When I get bored of playing guitar I use my Exit Index as a greasy drum machine to begin generative synthesis. Good for harsh industrial shit
For those who find Eno's "Music For Airports" a bit to sweet, or maybe hear this as something belonging to an age where being at an airport was actually relaxing and pleasant, I recommend the much darker "Music For Real Airports" by The Black Dog. You find it on Spotify and sometimes tracks from the album here on RUclips. This album contains titles like "Disinformation Desk", "Empty Seat Calculations" and "Strip Light Hate". Love what you do here Stefan. When you wrote Pure Zeen my dyslectic brain said Purr Zen, you know, what cat's do : )
This is so cool. I've been playing with making sounds via pedals from exactly the perspective you suggested. Thank you for sharing your approach and awesome sounds. Subscribed!
Stellar ... thanks for the inspiration, and for laying out the history, too. A longtime Eno fan, so really happy to see you explore his concepts in today's "guitar" pedal environment. This leaves me with a lot to think about (now where's that old mini Yamaha sequencer of mine...hmmm).
Happy you enjoyed the vid, man! Arpanoid is a wild pedal. Most people get confused when they get it, because they expect a simple effect they can just engage, but Arpanoid truly is an instrument. It needs to be practised, played and honed like one. It's a killer textural tool.
Cheers, dude! I'm really happy you found the video enjoyable and helpful 😊You have any recordings of you using your pedals with trumpet and voice? Would love to hear it.
You've been such an inspiration when it comes to approaching pedal synergy. NOW the ask: I would LOVE it if you could get your hands on a Cooper FX or Chase Bliss/Cooper FX Generation Loss and make a demo... this is your wheelhouse, you'd crush it. Thanks and keep up the phenomenal work!!

Wow, this is awesome. I do and watch loads of generative stuff with synths but I've never really seen some with only pedals. Sounds great and flows in a neat and fluffy way! I'm slowly getting back into watching the videos that I skipped, can't wait to see more of this! :)
Absolutely blissful. I really hope you have future plans to release music! Was also curious about you’re post process on this - are the Polymoon’s outs just going into an interface and DAW, any post magic to bring it all together? Great video as always!
Thanks, man! Yeah, Polymoon is just going into my recorder. All I’ve done in post is bump up the volume a bit and added the slightest touch of compression, just to take care of possible spikes and peaks. But haven’t done anything to change the sound of the pedal chain. All of the sounds and effects you’re hearing are coming from those 5 pedals 😊👍
Another amazing video, simply thank you, i love ambient music and create it is something that i always wanted. Now i know what i need to make good music.
Excellent work Stefan. Clever and intelligent use of pedals to create awesome ambient music. Your channel is so inspiring and always pushes us to think about what we are doing to get more out of our gear rather than just trying to play faster/shred more or whatever. You've really opened my eyes to the possibility of using pedals more creatively and your words at the end of the video are very well said.
Stefan, I’ve only recently gotten into your channel, and I hate that I’m so late to the party. Beautiful work, my friend! Thank you for breaking down these ambient soundscapes in a way that isn’t bogged down with theory and super technical terms. I’ve already improved so much of the way I play just from the way you’ve broken down each element and effect. Thank you!
Completely blown away by your kindness. Thank you! I'm just so happy you find value and insight in my videos. Makes all the hours making them totally worth it.

Haha! Thanks, man 🙏 Some machines truly shine the less you tell them what to do. Sometimes they have stories to tell, and we need to get better at listening to them 😊
I absolutely love this! Stefan, have you ever tried pedals by the company 'Hungry Robot Pedals'? Not only do they make beautiful pedals that suits your style of playing, but they also have a complete range of modular 'guitar' pedals, something that has always been on the plate of keyboard players like Eno. Off course you can run anything through them, but with that range they really aim for adventurous guitarists like you (and many of us, your fans). I couldn't help but thinking about these Hungry Robot pedals (modular and non modular), for they deserve the attention from us for all they're doing.
Thank you so much! Well, maybe getting all of them at once is a bit intense, but you can always start with one of them. So which one are you getting? 😊😂
@@thepedalzoneI want to start with a better reverb and delay pedal for ambient guitar purposes (although I'm wondering if the Boss RV/DD 500 series are overkill...) But I'm super pumped to check out the Meris Enzo :)

Haha! Far from witchcraft. Just me getting bored with playing guitar, and wanted something else to do the music making for me. Laziness can be a good thing at times 😂 Happy you enjoyed the video. Means a lot 🙏
Ive been curious about the meris enzo and its tracking/processing from an octave pedal before it. Thinking about the POG I have preceding it rather than after it. Thoughts, Stefan?
It could work as long as you don't send too much complex information into it. I would stick to monophonic use to get the best possible tracking in that situation. If you want to feed Enzo polyphonic information, then I think it would be best to place the POG after it. But hey, there's only one way to find out. Try both setups and see what works best for your use case and context :)
Damn I need to get an Enzo... This is awesome though, had a lot of success doing this sorta semi-generative stuff using a Red Panda Tensor to record a small high pitched ~4 second loop then stretch it out into 2 mins or so, and run it through pitch shifter/delay/reverb down the chain to give parameters you can tweak.
Now that's some quality content there! Thanks, Stefan! I wonder if there's a pedal to create generative music?! So you don't have to hook up your phone in the chain.
Thanks! I’m not using my phone in this video. Just sending a looped drone in D into my pedals. That’s it. But if you want one single pedal to creat me generative music, then you need something like the Empress Zoia
the Arpanoid is the last pedal I bought after renting it for a while. I'm obsessed with putting it on random modes, followed by a ton of Avalanche Run and Specular Tempus reverb. Guess I'll have to put some Hypnotised through it now.
Happy you're diggin' the Arpanoid. It's a wild pedal, but once you understand that it's actually more of an instrument than a classic effect, then entire new worlds open up for you ☺
I don't do lessons/clinics. I have nothing to teach. I'm just a pedal nerd aimlessly messing around with stuff until I stumble on something that inspires me. There's no reason or rhyme to it all, hence not something I could quantifiably, concisely or professionally pass on to anyone. But definitely dive into the world of generative music. There's a ton of great resources out there on the world wide web 😊
Hey Stefan, I’ve been thinking about something for the past few days and it was inspired by this segment. OK, I strongly feel you should do a Vid on Generative Apps, maybe you have already and I missed it. You are the ambient guitarist on RUclips, so it’s a a logical that you cover Generative Apps. Thanks you Rock!
Happy to hear the video gave you some new insight. I got the t-shirt from Chase Bliss Audio at NAMM. Don’t know if they have more, but that’s the place to ask, if you need one.
Haha! Cheers, man. Still used a guitar though to create the simple drone that feeds into the pedals, but you could use any simple tone generator or oscillator to get those pedals to start working their magic. Happy you enjoyed it 😊
Hehe. It could be fun, but pedals are a big enough rabbit hole for me at the moment. Maybe someday, but definitely no current plans to destroy my economy with yet another crazy addictive hobby 😂
Quick question. How do you run two Meris pedals together and use them both in stereo? More specifically how did you run both the avalanche run polymoon next to each other in stereo?
Any suggestions for generative music apps for Android? All of the apps you use are iOS only. I found that there is a version of Bloom called "Bloom: 10 Worlds", but it is apparently incompatible with my devices :(

ThePedalZone Thanks for the reply. I’ve been messing around with some generative ideas for a while. Really like your sounds. Wish you had an album!
Great stuff. Question. What pedal is behind you to the left of the Lysis? The one with all the knobs. I like my knobs in abundance.
Thanks, man! That's the Old Blood Noise Endeavors MAW next to the Lysis.
I’ve done a video on my favorite music apps to use with pedals. A lot of generative ones in that vid.
@@thepedalzone Thanks Stefan, I’ll check it out. That makes sense, that you’ve covered this already...I feel a bit silly Lol. Thanks again
A fascinating look into a world I didn't know existed! But I really gotta ask, where can I get that T-shirt???
Happy to hear the video gave you some new insight. I got the t-shirt from Chase Bliss Audio at NAMM. Don’t know if they have more, but that’s the place to ask, if you need one.
Stefan is a sonic wizard!
Too kind of you 🙏
Thanks for the vid! What's the best way you've found to connect your phone to your pedalboard?
🌊 beautiful
Thank you very much ❤️🙏
The pedal wizard has transcended guitars. He creates with only pedals.
Haha! Cheers, man. Still used a guitar though to create the simple drone that feeds into the pedals, but you could use any simple tone generator or oscillator to get those pedals to start working their magic. Happy you enjoyed it 😊
very cool
Thanks! Happy you liked the video 😊👌
Have you ever thought about diving into modular syths ? Seems like you would have lot of fun, you basically use pedals the way modular syths are used.
I guess it may even be possible to mismatch modular synths and pedals, use modalar syth with guitar, etc. endless possibilities...
Hehe. It could be fun, but pedals are a big enough rabbit hole for me at the moment. Maybe someday, but definitely no current plans to destroy my economy with yet another crazy addictive hobby 😂
really nice!!!
Thank you 😊🙏
Quick question. How do you run two Meris pedals together and use them both in stereo? More specifically how did you run both the avalanche run polymoon next to each other in stereo?
I use a stereo splitter cable that goes from TRS to two mono outputs. HOSA makes a great one, which is the one I'm using.
Thank you for this.
My pleasure. Happy you enjoyed it 🙏
@@thepedalzone wanted to ask. Have you used or done anything with eventide h9?
This is wonderful. Is the Avalanche Run in true bypass or tails mode please?
Thank you very much! Can't remember what I had it set to in this video. Probably true bypass. But you can choose whatever you want.
Any suggestions for generative music apps for Android? All of the apps you use are iOS only. I found that there is a version of Bloom called "Bloom: 10 Worlds", but it is apparently incompatible with my devices :(
I'm pretty sure Coldplay: Hypnotised works for Android as well. It did at some point.
Otherwise check out Wotja. It's a bit more complex, but it's super cool :)
@@thepedalzone Awesome! I'll give those a shot. Thanks! :D
Infinite Pads, Etherpad and QiBrd are also worth checking out :)
@@ForeverChillMan Cool! Thanks :)
