That said, it seems that there's one called GPIH that is supposedly really cheap. One of my friends has it. Nice, kinda expected as much. I’m still very excited to live/visit there. For some reason, it’s calling me, like it’s a past life. Haha I was supposed to be there now, but with everything going on I figured I’d give it a few more years. Things will hopefully be better. I look Asian, so I was wondering how people were getting treated there. Also, the homophobia is a little concerning, but seems like it isn’t as bad as some other places. @@GringoNation I’m from NC, but working in japan. I was looking to move there when a few years ago when a permanent visa was like 35g. Now it’s up to 100. But I’m thinking maybe it’s nit necessary since we can stay for a year at a time. Guess take baby steps. Visit first, and take my time. Plus I figured it would be a great hub to visit the rest of europe. Haha

That sucks! I am Filipino-Canadian and considering to visit Georgia and stay there for several months. I was actually concerned if locals are tolerant towards Asians. I can't find much info online until I came across with this very informative vlog. I also had unpleasant experience when I visited Poland. last September. There were 2 restaurants that didn't serve me. The staff gave me dirty look and ignored me for about 12 minutes so I just left. And a few other negative stuff I've experienced. Although I've also met nice and openminded locals. Apparently, most of them don't like Chinese and they look at all Asians and API as Chinese. With what's happening now in the Asian community in the US that kinda scares me to travel Eastern Europe. Although, I was in Greece and Turkey last August and I had a great time there, I didn't feel anything discriminatory until I've arrived in Poland. That's sad! :-(

I obviously cannot speak on these issues first hand. As stated in the video, during our time in Georgia, one of our friends was harassed and decided to leave because of it. Walking in Kutaisi with a Chinese friend, I also received some bad looks. THAT SAID, I think racist people are a very small portion of Georgia's population and I think it would be very rare for it to turn into something violent. The country has so much to offer and it would be shame to miss it because of that. There's a great possibility that you may not experience anything at all too. Have you seen my PROS video? I think they outweigh the CONS by a long shot, although of course I understand this is a big CON. i've seen some Japanese in Georgia, they didn't seem scared or unhappy, quite the opposite. If you are different from locals, you will get bad looks everywhere, even in the glorified liberal countries like the UK. I am white, European looking and I was told by Dutch woman in Amsterdam to go home, even though i was there as a tourist and spent my money there. idiots are everywhere, we have to deal with that. But I am sure very small minority are really racists.
A little late to the show but "Nomadic Wes" is an Asian youtuber who has made several videos about living in Georgia. From what I've seen personally, the vast majority of people do not mind them, there are a few bad apples here and there, but only a fraction of a fraction of the population, just gotta be prepared to meet them and be ready to ignore
Would it be a good place for an Asian-American woman to retire to? My top 3 places are Portugal, Georgia and Morocco with the info I have at hand. Portugal is a great place but not as affordable as the other two. I enjoy visiting Asia but prefer to live some place near Europe.

Yeah as a Georgian i can say that all is true and there are far more big issues with my country.Being sovereign country from USSR for almost 30 years,socialistic mentality still is still prevalent,but in my honest opinion,biggest issue of Georgia is not having independent,free court.That is the reason why country cannot progress fast.inspite of doing amazing job transforming 90s style soviet corrupt country into something modern,last government Of Mikheil Saakashvili and current failed to establish independent,free court unreachable for bribes and corruption.Court might be somewhat non corrupt,but on big scales its just giant mess,we can’t expect any progress without free court,thats why FDI s are falling rapidly or are at same level.apart from that,Georgia is 6th country is ease of doing business it means u can register business in 1 hour but its hard to make it Work cause once again,shitty court and small domestic market,but its till good country for investment IMO.And its absurd having electricity and water problems in country with rich resources in the aspect of hydro sustainable energy,solar as well as wind energy.this is because of monopoly on these services.another big problem with this country is that everyone goes to university yet more then half is unemployed or is employed to work not related to ones field of study,and that happens because university enrollment exams are easy and colleges are scarce across country with low quality education in both institutions.basically middle class is non existent here.And instead of announcing tenders for investors to create this colleges,government is trying to build one itself,which in turn,turns to shit show,because governments idea of education is 50 years behind,ministry of education here in general is shitshow.despite this and other problems(what was described above in video) and absence of quality regulations in many fields,corruption level is still low,country is safe,infrastructure is somewhat developing and Georgia has many good results in various measurements of life quality (hdi,gini, corruption index,inequality index,freedom of speech index etc) they aren’t the best but are certainly best in region and hopefully improving little by little and i hope government will be able to ADRESS and pragmatically solve those issues

Sometimes electricity and water shut offs can show up as a text message on your Phone and it contains info when Will it happen and how long it Will be and the time Will be spent on fixing or up gradeing the damaged bit.

Hey Eoin! Thanks for watching! I never experienced any reactions to pollution in Tbilisi. Apparently the pollution there is above the norm but I thought it was fine. There's also many parks. I'm from São Paulo, Brazil, which is very polluted so the only places I've ever felt reactions where in Malaysia and China. Hope that helps!

I would say another con is how many businesses use Facebook as their website and main method of communication. As someone who doesn't really subscribe to social media, this proved rather frustrating because I'm not about to set up a Facebook account just to access a business page's "website" for more information.

I agree with everything, I will just point out a few things. There are dark sand beaches in Georgia, I think nomads can avoid Batumi and surroundings and head to different direction, less people, cleaner water, dark sand and pine trees, but usually it is not deep at all. Even tho I agree that Georgia is not pedestrian-friendly, there is some logic to driving in Georgia and some kind of organized chaos, you'll only understand if risk and try yourself, just be respectfully slow at first.
Doggie doodoo (and chewing gum on sidewalks/pavements) was a problem for me when I first arrived in Manhattan. I didn't have much of this problem when I was living on a government-housing estate in Kowloon, Hong Kong. People didn't keep dogs in the highly urbanized neighborhood. My birthplace was a bit different. My first photograph as a toddler was taken with the neighborhood dog. It was nobody's and everybody's dog. It has to poop somewhere which I didn't know about.
As an American, I am not happy about the gay propaganda I'm my country. Really hope Georgia can keep away from it. It hasn't been a good thing for America.
I am a Korean and my bestfriend is black. We love to travel together. I'm glad this video included how Asians might be perceived by some Georgians (bad apple anywhere in the world). But do you know how black people are treated there by any chance?

Some people may stare just because they aren't too used to seeing black people and as you said, there are always bad apples. I also enjoyed your video "how I barely travel full time" where u had like 25 bucks on your bank account; transparency. I like the cost of living videos with clear numbers; very useful. I think my tip would be to not rely heavily on editing (like in your feeding street cats video), because you have a personality and u don't need to make up for it by doing sick edits.

I watched this video because I saw the movie ( And then we danced) it made me curious about Georgia. I will never visit Georgia. It's too far away from Hawaii where I live. Plus the culture is too conservative for me. This was a very good video. 👍

One thing I noticed in the excellent Georgian movie was the excessive amount of cigarette smoking by the actors. I haven't seen so much cigarette smoking in American society since the 1970s. It was shocking! If this level of tobacco usage exists in Georgia, it should have been mentioned in your video. I would consider it much more of a negative factor to living or even visiting Georgia than stepping in dog poop.
Great video! I think the most shocking one for me was the homophobia and racism there. It's sad that this is still an issue in some countries. But yeah -- I agree with you that the pros definitely outweigh the cons! 👍

There are dome nice gay bars, lgbt friendly clubs, like Bassiani, Khidi or Cafe Gallery. Georgia is least homophobic country in post soviet union, not like west Europe or USA of course. But still very safe.

Hi. Never been there but I really don't think homophobia could be worse in Georgia than in France or "progressive-liberal" (!) so-claimed countries. Is it truly? Come to any french city or countryside, stay there for a while, and you'll see that true open minds are as rare as green cows. Honestly LG communities have been targeted from a few years now and I'd say it's not gonna stop. Backlash on eccentric western lobbies. But unfortunately gays and lesbians are paying the price.

@gringo nation you are probably renting your apartment, if you were an owner you'd receive SMS notification ahead of time before water or electricity would be cut off. your landlord probably receives it but is to lazy to inform you. also you can check on official websites when it will be back on.

I got a bit concerned about what you said about racism though, I am an Asian guy who will be solo travelling most of the time I am there. Obviously racism exists everywhere, but would I have to worry about my safety walking alone at night in Tbilisi, for example?

Georgia is no different in that sense. That said, even though I can't speak out of personal experience, I can't imagine you would have any safety concerns here. Georgia is an incredibly safe country and I have NEVER felt threatened here in any way. I would encourage you to ask around in some groups on Facebook about how asians feel they've been treated here. It potentially may not be as bad as some other countries in the long run.
i agree with all of these. i think the only way for it to improve is just for people to get more educated, which seems like is already happening and is easier for people to do on their own with the internet. also some old people are very brainwashed and traumatized from soviet era, so in 10-20 years i think georgia will be very much like a western european country, especially since 80+% wants to be in the eu

The beaches are so uncomfortable that after I made it into warm water I couldn’t get out back on land . My soles hurt so bad from all those rocks that I couldn’t move. I even cried as I was trying to make my way out of the water. Georgian beach doesn’t even come close to beautiful Tropical ocean beaches with soft silky sand .

ñ chega a ser difícil, mas é trabalhoso, tem uns fonemas q se vc ñ sabe como posiciona a língua, qnt ar soltar e etc, fica impossível de falar, mas é questão de apreder e treinar, a escrita é facil de pegar, uma semana ce pega o alfabeto, acredito q a dificuldade de muitos é em entender a gramatica e como as frases funcionam pq usa uma logica diferente de linguas ocidentais, é mais parecida c a logica oriental porém ainda é distinta, um idioma realmente único, mas ta longe de ser muito dificil, tem idiomas q ce choraria só de olhar
e a escrita é bem bonitinha, parece um monte de corações de formas diferentes, oq torna facil de aprender já q a grafia é mais familiar q por exemplo, os kanjis

Thank you so much for clarifying the cons regarding the conservative/traditional culture. I spent a year in the rural regions of Georgia, and I'm always afraid of Georgia being promoted to outsiders as "just Tbilisi" or "European". While Georgia is an extremely safe country, it is not a place where women or LGBTQ people can let their guard down as they would in North America. Georgian people are so welcoming and kind, but their culture and ways of life are not as progressive or "liberated" as in most Western countries. It is important to remember to be modest in clothing choices, to limit public displays of affection, and to avoid emotionally charged discussions of religion or politics.
Thank YOU for shedding more light on the Georgian way of life and providing people here with more information. You spent a long time in the rural region and clearly have a deep understanding of the country's people. I couldn't agree with you more. It's a marvelous country but has its flaws, like all the others. Thanks again, ovhni! :-)
Hey Banana Patch, I really don't think your wife would encounter any problems in Georgia being hispanic. I'm Brazilian and have never experienced any racism towards me. There are definitely hispanic people living there happily. With asians it could be another story but even that is more an exception than a rule, as most people are lovely. I came find racism as far as black Americans every black person seemed to be from Africa and they had amazing times in Tbilisi. That's honestly a boost in assurance bc there are countries where blacks are treated differently until they are found out as american a place I know of is France. Black Americans are treated better than Africans. Racism really got bad for asians since Corona that's a given. Just like when Ebloa broke out certain people were treated bad. The harassment of the asians might not blow over nicely for Corona as it was for Ebola. Fun fact 3/4 of Russia is Asian therefore Georgia which is the south east under Russia has a chance of being Asian themselves.
These are true to some extent but depends on which countries you're comparing it to. For example, the creepy men issue becomes a legitimate gang rape issue in Brazil. The racism/homophobia thing is way more progressive than the surrounding countries like Russia or Turkey. This list is okay but not entirely accurate. I do like your video style and presentation though!

For a black British student moving to Georgia for studies (in about a year and half), these cons are sounding kinda frightening to me. Especially when one of my biggest pet peeves (no pun intended) is finding dog shit on pathways. Sadly enough, I'm not shocked at the racism. Off to watch the pros to make myself feel better.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching the video, I really appreciate it. I obviously cannot speak with authority on the subject, but my impression is that there is not much racism against blacks. In fact, if you live in the US, it's possible you encounter it more on a day-to-day basis. If anything, in Georgia they are more "afraid" of blacks. I only experienced racism first-hand in Georgia once (maybe second hand because it wasn't towards me but an asian woman I was walking with) and that wasn't in Tbilisi but in Kutaisi, which is still more set in its ways, I believe. I actually think you'd be fine and wouldn't let that stop you from seeing such a beautiful country. But that's just my 2 cents. Hope all the info has been helpful to you. :-)
haha georgians are considered as "black people" by slavic people, idk why, but think its dumb. and "afraid" ? of course not not even a little bit its just a new thing for georgians to see black people in real life, they really love and respect famous american black people as well.
We are trying to preserve out ancient culture. Georgia will never become “progressive”. We hate that shit over here. We don’t think what westerners do is in any way progressive. We actually think it’s regressive in a lot of ways. The mentality that “everything goes” is actually very damaging to a society, especially to an ancient society like ours. Idk why you were expecting an “open” society in Tbilisi. I’d advice you to at least learn a little bit about country’s history before making a move here or even a visit for that matter.

Also cons Exploiting toddlers and babies on streets for begging purposes. In Batumi particularly, toddlers who can barely walk left with begging trays, can't believe parents would take this risk with small children. It's repulsive. Also common on Tbilisi metro

Dog poo is really not a problem. If there is racism, it isn't overt. With the Orthodox Christian influence, and the relative poverty, women do not mingle much. With all the female to female touching, there seems to be a lesbian influence.
I would have a hard time tolerating the intolerance of other cultures, groups, and races. God knows the U.S. has it's share of problems, it's always sad to hear about this in other countries.

I'd say Georgia's not actually as bad as some places in the US, at least if American media is to be believed. That's not because we're better people, of course, but rather because we don't have enough people of color for it to become a major problem, and the ones we _do_ are tourists, who get special treatment. I've encountered these swastikas, too, but I've never met a neo-Nazi, nor anyone openly, rudely racist, in my life. There are definitely undercurrents of racism, but it's primarily relegated to talking when the backs are turned; unfortunate, yes, but not neo-Nazi bad. I think the swastikas are just the work of dumb teenagers being dumb teenagers. Homophobia, on the other hand, is very much an issue. As a highly religious country, Georgia is similar to what I believe a state like Alabama must be like. I hope we'll move past it in time, especially since younger generations tend to be more "Westernized" and less religious, but it'll definitely take time.
I wonder if intolerance is simply a way to preserve a culture. And, wouldn't it be considered intolerant not to tolerate those trying to preserve their culture? I don't think it would be correct to show up at a Native American event and criticize them for not including other races in their activities. It's good to think about these things through before you judge and not to blindly apply Western Values in a foreign country.

This is probably the first time I hear Georgians have problem with Russians. I mean, with people, not with politicians. That politicians are who they are is given. But the people? There is of course an other animal called "typical Russian mass-tourist". This is an other story, but a "Russian mass-tourist" would rather endanger certain areas of Egypt or Turkey than Georgia. But if you ever seen Atlantic City, Vegas or Ibiza - you won't have good opinion of American or German mass tourists either. As far as "racism" - there you are correct. I don't speak Georgian, but in quite a few languages of Eastern Europe the word "race" either a loan word and does not exist natively ("раса" in Russian) or simply means "humans" ("faj", "emberfaj" in Hungarian). So in Russian to say "black race" ("чёрная раса" or "раса негроидов") is totally awkward. In Hungarian the "fekete faj" expression was used only one in the entire history of the literature language, in a chanson from 1930 about a black girlfriend. Saying that, accusations of Hungarians or Russians being "racist" are far more frequent than of Georgians. Where these accusations could be correct is rather the conservatism of the people and them being afraid of unknown. This can be overcome very easy way simply by proper introduction. Since you are in NYC you know that Americans always yell out "hiiiiiii!" very friendly way, with artificial smile. For all East / Central Europe it is alien. It is very natural here for people being very reserved and cautious towards "unknown". One word though: as Asian or African I would do my best to avoid football arenas. But I am "white" - and I still avoid these arenas. There, indeed, the racism is brewing + police tends to act before asking questions. As a kid once I was almost beaten by my classmates because I was having a magenta-white bag while all of the other kids were in favor of green-white things. The joke is, I did not even know, that these colors stand for certain soccer teams. Very sensitive topic are swastikas. It is unusual and many Americans were shocked to see them even in Israel. The most common reason is that young people tend to revolt - and as all of them experienced, the "best" way to annoy adults in the Soviet Union was to paint a swastika. Kids do that sometimes without understanding what it is, they find the reactions of adults rather funny. Many people from all over Soviet Union live in Israel and their kids found exactly the same way to annoy adults as their parents did decades before. I have to confess: as a 7-year old child I made a swastika, too, out of wood. My parents discovered it and had some fiery reaction. Before that I did not even know precisely, what it is, I just seen it painted on the wall and "funny" reactions of adults. For the very same reason I am not very concerned about these swastikas in Georgia or Israel. This is a "traditional" way of (ex)Soviet kids to annoy the adults without understanding the background of what they doing.

But I’m thinking maybe it’s nit necessary since we can stay for a year at a time. Guess take baby steps. Visit first, and take my time. That sucks! I am Filipino-Canadian and considering to visit Georgia and stay there for several months. I was actually concerned if locals are tolerant towards Asians. I can't find much info online until I came across with this very informative vlog. I also had unpleasant experience when I visited Poland. last September. There were 2 restaurants that didn't serve me. The staff gave me dirty look and ignored me for about 12 minutes so I just left. And a few other negative stuff I've experienced. Although I've also met nice and openminded locals. Apparently, most of them don't like Chinese and they look at all Asians and API as Chinese. With what's happening now in the Asian community in the US that kinda scares me to travel Eastern Europe. Although, I was in Greece and Turkey last August and I had a great time there, I didn't feel anything discriminatory until I've arrived in Poland. That's sad! :-(

I obviously cannot speak on these issues first hand. As stated in the video, during our time in Georgia, one of our friends was harassed and decided to leave because of it. Walking in Kutaisi with a Chinese friend, I also received some bad looks. THAT SAID, I think racist people are a very small portion of Georgia's population and I think it would be very rare for it to turn into something violent. The country has so much to offer and it would be shame to miss it because of that. There's a great possibility that you may not experience anything at all too. Have you seen my PROS video? I think they outweigh the CONS by a long shot, although of course I understand this is a big CON. i've seen some Japanese in Georgia, they didn't seem scared or unhappy, quite the opposite. If you are different from locals, you will get bad looks everywhere, even in the glorified liberal countries like the UK. I am white, European looking and I was told by Dutch woman in Amsterdam to go home, even though i was there as a tourist and spent my money there. idiots are everywhere, we have to deal with that. But I am sure very small minority are really racists.
A little late to the show but "Nomadic Wes" is an Asian youtuber who has made several videos about living in Georgia. From what I've seen personally, the vast majority of people do not mind them, there are a few bad apples here and there, but only a fraction of a fraction of the population, just gotta be prepared to meet them and be ready to ignore
80% of us are west asian lol. all of the tourists here are mainly east and central asians, literally go for it we don’t care
Would it be a good place for an Asian-American woman to retire to? My top 3 places are Portugal, Georgia and Morocco with the info I have at hand. Portugal is a great place but not as affordable as the other two. I enjoy visiting Asia but prefer to live some place near Europe.

Yeah as a Georgian i can say that all is true and there are far more big issues with my country.Being sovereign country from USSR for almost 30 years,socialistic mentality still is still prevalent,but in my honest opinion,biggest issue of Georgia is not having independent,free court.That is the reason why country cannot progress fast.inspite of doing amazing job transforming 90s style soviet corrupt country into something modern,last government Of Mikheil Saakashvili and current failed to establish independent,free court unreachable for bribes and corruption.Court might be somewhat non corrupt,but on big scales its just giant mess,we can’t expect any progress without free court,thats why FDI s are falling rapidly or are at same level.apart from that,Georgia is 6th country is ease of doing business it means u can register business in 1 hour but its hard to make it Work cause once again,shitty court and small domestic market,but its till good country for investment IMO.And its absurd having electricity and water problems in country with rich resources in the aspect of hydro sustainable energy,solar as well as wind energy.this is because of monopoly on these services.another big problem with this country is that everyone goes to university yet more then half is unemployed or is employed to work not related to ones field of study,and that happens because university enrollment exams are easy and colleges are scarce across country with low quality education in both institutions.basically middle class is non existent here.And instead of announcing tenders for investors to create this colleges,government is trying to build one itself,which in turn,turns to shit show,because governments idea of education is 50 years behind,ministry of education here in general is shitshow.despite this and other problems(what was described above in video) and absence of quality regulations in many fields,corruption level is still low,country is safe,infrastructure is somewhat developing and Georgia has many good results in various measurements of life quality (hdi,gini, corruption index,inequality index,freedom of speech index etc) they aren’t the best but are certainly best in region and hopefully improving little by little and i hope government will be able to ADRESS and pragmatically solve those issues

I'm from São Paulo, Brazil, which is very polluted so the only places I've ever felt reactions where in Malaysia and China. Hope that helps!

I would say another con is how many businesses use Facebook as their website and main method of communication. As someone who doesn't really subscribe to social media, this proved rather frustrating because I'm not about to set up a Facebook account just to access a business page's "website" for more information.

I agree with everything, I will just point out a few things.
There are dark sand beaches in Georgia, I think nomads can avoid Batumi and surroundings and head to different direction, less people, cleaner water, dark sand and pine trees, but usually it is not deep at all.
Even tho I agree that Georgia is not pedestrian-friendly, there is some logic to driving in Georgia and some kind of organized chaos, you'll only understand if risk and try yourself, just be respectfully slow at first.

Doggie doodoo (and chewing gum on sidewalks/pavements) was a problem for me when I first arrived in Manhattan. I didn't have much of this problem when I was living on a government-housing estate in Kowloon, Hong Kong. People didn't keep dogs in the highly urbanized neighborhood.
My birthplace was a bit different. My first photograph as a toddler was taken with the neighborhood dog. It was nobody's and everybody's dog. It has to poop somewhere which I didn't know about.

Women unfortunately still suffer harassment on a daily basis anywhere in the world so it’s wise to always take safety precautions. I watched this video because I saw the movie ( And then we danced) it made me curious about Georgia. I will never visit Georgia. It's too far away from Hawaii where I live. Plus the culture is too conservative for me. This was a very good video. 👍

One thing I noticed in the excellent Georgian movie was the excessive amount of cigarette smoking by the actors. I haven't seen so much cigarette smoking in American society since the 1970s. It was shocking! If this level of tobacco usage exists in Georgia, it should have been mentioned in your video. I would consider it much more of a negative factor to living or even visiting Georgia than stepping in dog poop.

There are dome nice gay bars, lgbt friendly clubs, like Bassiani, Khidi or Cafe Gallery. Georgia is least homophobic country in post soviet union, not like west Europe or USA of course. But still very safe.

Hi. Never been there but I really don't think homophobia could be worse in Georgia than in France or "progressive-liberal" (!) so-claimed countries. Is it truly? Come to any french city or countryside, stay there for a while, and you'll see that true open minds are as rare as green cows. Obviously racism exists everywhere, but would I have to worry about my safety walking alone at night in Tbilisi, for example?

The beaches are so uncomfortable that after I made it into warm water I couldn’t get out back on land . My soles hurt so bad from all those rocks that I couldn’t move. I even cried as I was trying to make my way out of the water. Georgian beach doesn’t even come close to beautiful Tropical ocean beaches with soft silky sand .

Thank you so much for clarifying the cons regarding the conservative/traditional culture. I spent a year in the rural regions of Georgia, and I'm always afraid of Georgia being promoted to outsiders as "just Tbilisi" or "European". While Georgia is an extremely safe country, it is not a place where women or LGBTQ people can let their guard down as they would in North America. Georgian people are so welcoming and kind, but their culture and ways of life are not as progressive or "liberated" as in most Western countries. It is important to remember to be modest in clothing choices, to limit public displays of affection, and to avoid emotionally charged discussions of religion or politics.
Thank YOU for shedding more light on the Georgian way of life and providing people here with more information. You spent a long time in the rural region and clearly have a deep understanding of the country's people. I couldn't agree with you more. It's a marvelous country but has its flaws, like all the others. Thanks again, ovhni! :-)

Honestly, I would not let that stop you. The pros really outweigh the cons by a long shot. Unfortunately I think there's a lot of racism towards asians right now all around the world. I came find racism as far as black Americans every black person seemed to be from Africa and they had amazing times in Tbilisi. That's honestly a boost in assurance bc there are countries where blacks are treated differently until they are found out as american a place I know of is France. Black Americans are treated better than Africans. Racism really got bad for asians since Corona that's a given. Just like when Ebloa broke out certain people were treated bad. The harassment of the asians might not blow over nicely for Corona as it was for Ebola. Fun fact 3/4 of Russia is Asian therefore Georgia which is the south east under Russia has a chance of being Asian themselves.

These are true to some extent but depends on which countries you're comparing it to. For example, the creepy men issue becomes a legitimate gang rape issue in Brazil. The racism/homophobia thing is way more progressive than the surrounding countries like Russia or Turkey. This list is okay but not entirely accurate. For a black British student moving to Georgia for studies (in about a year and half), these cons are sounding kinda frightening to me. Hey! Thanks so much for watching the video, I really appreciate it. I obviously cannot speak with authority on the subject, but my impression is that there is not much racism against blacks. In fact, if you live in the US, it's possible you encounter it more on a day-to-day basis. If anything, in Georgia they are more "afraid" of blacks. I only experienced racism first-hand in Georgia once (maybe second hand because it wasn't towards me but an asian woman I was walking with) and that wasn't in Tbilisi but in Kutaisi, which is still more set in its ways, I believe. I actually think you'd be fine and wouldn't let that stop you from seeing such a beautiful country. But that's just my 2 cents. Hope all the info has been helpful to you. :-)

We are trying to preserve out ancient culture. Georgia will never become “progressive”. We hate that shit over here. We don’t think what westerners do is in any way progressive. We actually think it’s regressive in a lot of ways. The mentality that “everything goes” is actually very damaging to a society, especially to an ancient society like ours. Idk why you were expecting an “open” society in Tbilisi. I’d advice you to at least learn a little bit about country’s history before making a move here or even a visit for that matter.

Dog poo is really not a problem. If there is racism, it isn't overt. With the Orthodox Christian influence, and the relative poverty, women do not mingle much. With all the female to female touching, there seems to be a lesbian influence.
I would have a hard time tolerating the intolerance of other cultures, groups, and races. God knows the U.S. has it's share of problems, it's always sad to hear about this in other countries.

@@GringoNation I did watch the pro video. I really want to visit some of the Balkan countries, of which Georgia is relativly close to. Georgia is definitly on the top of the area's list.
I'd say Georgia's not actually as bad as some places in the US, at least if American media is to be believed. That's not because we're better people, of course, but rather because we don't have enough people of color for it to become a major problem, and the ones we _do_ are tourists, who get special treatment.
I've encountered these swastikas, too, but I've never met a neo-Nazi, nor anyone openly, rudely racist, in my life. There are definitely undercurrents of racism, but it's primarily relegated to talking when the backs are turned; unfortunate, yes, but not neo-Nazi bad. I think the swastikas are just the work of dumb teenagers being dumb teenagers.
Homophobia, on the other hand, is very much an issue. As a highly religious country, Georgia is similar to what I believe a state like Alabama must be like. I hope we'll move past it in time, especially since younger generations tend to be more "Westernized" and less religious, but it'll definitely take time.
I wonder if intolerance is simply a way to preserve a culture. And, wouldn't it be considered intolerant not to tolerate those trying to preserve their culture? I don't think it would be correct to show up at a Native American event and criticize them for not including other races in their activities. It's good to think about these things through before you judge and not to blindly apply Western Values in a foreign country.

This is probably the first time I hear Georgians have problem with Russians. I mean, with people, not with politicians. That politicians are who they are is given. But the people? There is of course an other animal called "typical Russian mass-tourist". This is an other story, but a "Russian mass-tourist" would rather endanger certain areas of Egypt or Turkey than Georgia. But if you ever seen Atlantic City, Vegas or Ibiza - you won't have good opinion of American or German mass tourists either.
As far as "racism" - there you are correct. I don't speak Georgian, but in quite a few languages of Eastern Europe the word "race" either a loan word and does not exist natively ("раса" in Russian) or simply means "humans" ("faj", "emberfaj" in Hungarian). So in Russian to say "black race" ("чёрная раса" or "раса негроидов") is totally awkward. In Hungarian the "fekete faj" expression was used only one in the entire history of the literature language, in a chanson from 1930 about a black girlfriend.
Saying that, accusations of Hungarians or Russians being "racist" are far more frequent than of Georgians. Where these accusations could be correct is rather the conservatism of the people and them being afraid of unknown. This can be overcome very easy way simply by proper introduction. Since you are in NYC you know that Americans always yell out "hiiiiiii!" very friendly way, with artificial smile. For all East / Central Europe it is alien. It is very natural here for people being very reserved and cautious towards "unknown".
One word though: as Asian or African I would do my best to avoid football arenas. But I am "white" - and I still avoid these arenas. There, indeed, the racism is brewing + police tends to act before asking questions. As a kid once I was almost beaten by my classmates because I was having a magenta-white bag while all of the other kids were in favor of green-white things. The joke is, I did not even know, that these colors stand for certain soccer teams.
Very sensitive topic are swastikas. It is unusual and many Americans were shocked to see them even in Israel.
The most common reason is that young people tend to revolt - and as all of them experienced, the "best" way to annoy adults in the Soviet Union was to paint a swastika. Kids do that sometimes without understanding what it is, they find the reactions of adults rather funny. Many people from all over Soviet Union live in Israel and their kids found exactly the same way to annoy adults as their parents did decades before.
I have to confess: as a 7-year old child I made a swastika, too, out of wood. My parents discovered it and had some fiery reaction. Before that I did not even know precisely, what it is, I just seen it painted on the wall and "funny" reactions of adults. For the very same reason I am not very concerned about these swastikas in Georgia or Israel. This is a "traditional" way of (ex)Soviet kids to annoy the adults without understanding the background of what they doing.
