Yeah it's like people just ignore the common knowledge that dogs with jobs are proven to be much happier and feel more fulfilled. I give my dogs jobs just for enrichment, like doing smell training. I don't actually NEED them to track smells but it makes them happy
The opposite of a happy, fulfilled, working dog like Prince, is this nervous, aggressive, Aussie. With such energetic working breeds, I often say that if you don’t give them a job, they’ll give themselves one - and you’re not gonna like what they choose.
How can anybody see Prince and think he’s stressed? He’s the chillest dog. It takes a lot of pushing before he pushes back. And than he wants to play. That doesn’t seem like a stressed dog to me!
I've owned and trained Dobermans (professionally as a young girl in the 70s) and this breed loves to work. They love tasks. They are highly intelligent, loving and multifaceted animals. Prince loves exactly what he does and it shows in the way he reacts. Great team!

If your working dog is able to correct another dog without killing the other dog. If you are able to call off your working dog when it’s correcting another dog with a simple yell. Im pretty sure you are doing something right.
Prince is an absolute game changer. What could be better than an assistant who can speak the other dogs' language and let them know what's up in a way they understand? Not only that. but he's also there to be their friend because he genuinely likes other dogs and wants to help them be better. Everything Prince does in these videos is uplifting and a huge inspiration because at the end of the day, he gets to see a lot of transformations. There aren't too many dogs who get to say "Yeah that guy was being a bit of a jerk, but I helped him." [P.S. Rock on, Prince! You're the best boy!]
I believe as long as price gets a balance of being a “working” dog and being a playing dog I think it’s amazing you can have a dog like prince helping you reintegrate nervous, aggressive, and fearful dogs

@@HWHY dude, for real. a lot of people that come to see Joel could fix their doggy issues by taking a play out of Stonnie's book- take them out into nature where they will be challenged, or anywhere (like a dog park) where they can bang up with and get their asses kicked by other more matured dogs. One of my herding dogs (working aussie/border collie/maybe malinois mix) is like this, and isn't so tough when it needs to cross a body of water, canyon, or rough house with German Shepherds.

He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.
Those who understand dogs can easily see that Prince is a huge benefit both for a trainers companion and for dogs with temperment issues. Great working dog and you can tell that he really loves what he's doing.

Most people, unless complitley new to dogs, could train a dog from puppy to be just like that, what changes is when people are inturdyced with harder dogs who have worse behavioural issues, puppy is a blank page, easy, but a dog with behaviourall issues isnt so easy.

What separates Prince from a 'normal' dog is he understands he's a working dog, he's got a job to do and that is to help you and these dogs. The level of restraint he showed is a testament to his understanding of that and your training of him. Bravo
My husband is a shepherd and he understands the importance of dogs learning and following instructions of their owners and the other dogs. We reward our working dogs as if they are family, they help us to put food on the table and part of production to agriculture. You’ve got to listen to your dogs needs as well as ours, it’s a bond and we’re a team. You have to show them respect.
Prince knows exactly what he's doing. not at all stressed at any moment...annoyed sometimes..but he has a self control, assertiveness and composure most of the humans(including myself) would die to have as a virtue. Also, i feel so sad about this aussie, I personally have gone through phases of social and other form of anxieties, and I know how it feels to not be relaxed at any moment and staying on the verge of panic all the time.
These are great owners. I am so impressed with their intelligence and willingness to do what it takes to help their dog. We’d love to see follow up videos with their dog, them and you. Really enjoyable to watch this initial meeting.
Watching you and Prince made me realize my older dog is helping and correcting our puppy (an out of control rescue, 10 month old with similar issues to McCoy) and I've stopped myself from preventing it and instead trust her to correct the puppy's unacceptable behaviour, which definitely makes a difference.
Prince is a dog who has a job and knows his role in life. No coincidence he is a happy well adjusted dog. This is balance when dogs and people are out of balance this is when we get behavioural issues.
prince is doing what any alpha pack member would do, he's establishing boundaries, what he will tolerate and won't. dogs can communicate to other dogs what we cannot. you can tell by prince's body language that he's not territorial, he's not there to be a d*ck, he has great recall which is a WELL trained dog! people think you're hurting a dog when kneeing them, but look at how rough dogs play, they aren't phased by it. i'm NOT saying to beat a dog, there's a big difference, and working breeds especially NEEED strong boundaries because otherwise they will overwork their owner. just found your channel, loving your work!
The whole alpha thing has been debunked though. What you are 100% right on, though, is that Prince was establishing a boundary. I think that this Aussie was just being a brat and Prince told him to knock it off and act like an adult, which at 3 years old, he is.
@@briandaaranda9735 look at wolf packs, there is hierarchy - the alpha dog eats first and if those lower in the pecking order try to eat ahead of the alpha they are severely reprimanded or even killed. I don't believe one bit that the "alpha thing" has been debunked. the Aussie is at prince's house, on prince's territory and entering part of prince's pack. of course Joel is the top alpha though cuz prince listens to Joel. there is pecking order. I've worked at 3 dog daycares and rehabilitation center - most dogs are followers and want to be part of the pack but there are dominant dogs that have more tenacity and don't follow. pack mentality and hierarchy is instinctual. do you have to be an alpha to set boundaries, no, but do alphas tend to set boundaries, yes.

The original research involved 3 male wolves from 3 different populations, put in a paddock together - who unsurprisingly fought. Mech later discredited this particular research, after subsequent tests showed that wolves living in families with parents and cubs were typically less aggressive. The original theory was one of a constant, linear structure - which was replaced with a more complex theory based on family structure. The point is, mech never said that wolves didn’t fight over mates and resources, never said that wolves didn’t have dominant and submissive roles and temperaments. He just discredited the original piece of research as a poor demonstration of natural behaviour in wolves - which it was.
@@chelseacushman2242 The wolf pack thing is also false. Dogs may have dominance and may form little packs with hierarchy, but wolves typically do not. Wolf packs are made up of two parents (or the alpha pair) and their children. They do not kill each other for no reason, the only time wolves kill each other would be during rival pack fights. Basically the parents or "alphas" would not kill their own children. Wolves do not fight for alpha or whatever either, if one of their children wants to "be alpha" they simply disperse and start their own pack. I'm not saying wolves don't display dominance though as they definitely do, its just not crazy alpha omega stuff like you see on tv. Only wolves in captivity have shown signs of legitimate hierarchy.

And yes, much like how there's shy humans and bold humans, there are more or less dominant dogs and wolves out there, but most disputes are solved on the spot on a case-by-case basis, and end much like what we saw in the video: one of them gets their point across, and the other accepts it.
Prince is like the epitome of a working dog they need a job to do to feel fulfilled and his obedience is top notch as well, anyone who thinks differently doesn't really know much about the doberman dog breed they buy into the stereotypical myths about them
Prince is a legend. He's no different to a parent telling an unruly kid to behave. If he was stressed he wouldn't release or even come forward in the 1st place. More people are realising dogs are the best mentors and my eldest collie is used for the same thing in my sessions. I would personally like to see less popping/force and a bit more praise with the preferred behaviours, but your technique is as force-free as I think you can make it and you get the results, and switch to Prince when safe to do so; people need to remember these sessions are edited for time and people come to you as a last resort, so all the standard techniques will have been tried already and this is a last ditch attempt to reset the dog's behaviour. Great job!
that dogs energy is fueled by his anxiousness. even the owner says that no matter how much exercise he gets, he just never stops. I think that time away from his humans will be the best thing for him. I wonder if he'd behave the same way if his humans were not present.
Yeah, this dog needs a live in mentor dog who is really laid back and needs a set routine where he goes and works and then eats and rests and then plays and rests and then works, eats and rests and that way he can know what is expected. And part of that means working on teaching stay and relax as part of the day of work. So getting rewarded with treats for down stay after a really tiring workout is a suggestion.
We ordered thissince we are planning to get a dog and we've watched dog lover on tv many times. I had a female Newfy that was a lot like Prince. If two other dogs were fighting, she’d just insert herself in the middle and stand there. She was so big and fluffy, they couldn’t see each other anymore and the fight just dissolved. It didn’t make her stressed out or have a bad life. Working breeds are happier doing a job, any job.
Prince is amazing. Period. Also testament to your training was your ability to call him off when he was getting into it with the other dog. I don't know if people realize how hard that is to do! Kudos to the mom, I would be very happy to be considered in the top 3% of your clients! Looking forward to part 3!

That Aussie needs a JOB. He is a working breed. Hes meant to herd cattle, sheep, goats, chicken, geese etc... or at least be in some herding classes. All I saw was a dog with no job. He was herding his own people and protecting them from everything like Aussies that have a flock to care for do. Prince did a great job standing up for himself. Hes an amazing dog. And I don't see him being stressed either. He always looks happy and content. How could he not be? Hes with his people and a lot of other dogs daily. That's all most dogs would probably wish for.
I agree. We don't know what this Aussie's routine is day to day. Clearly we know what behaviors need to stop but also important does this dog have an outlet besides 2 or 3 walks a day. I also know Aussies are not supposed to be 100lbs even larger ones.

Aussies don't "care for flocks" they herd them, they don't protect them. They're reactive because herding dogs are bred to be sensitive and reactive, they have to be to do their jobs well. Mix fear with reactivity and you get neurotic dogs like this guy, it's an easy turn to take whether it's with genetics or environment which is why you see so many aussies and other herding breeds like this.
Prince has a more fulfilled life than, full of enrichment, love, clear, concise boundaries & a family who love him & has his best interest at heart. What a lucky dog! Even WITH the occasional difficulty or challenge, I still think Prince has a better life than most
I think a slightly more realistic option for most people to exercise their dogs that have herding instincts is agility instead of herding. When you go to a club or trainer to work on herding, the dog has to do an instinct test. If the dog is too high strung they may not allow it to work with the livestock. Hence why I recommend agility, you can do that with almost any dog. A lot of places offer private classes so you can do it with your reactive dogs as well. Just some food for thought :)
I agree with you totally. I live on a ranch and my dogs (border collies) are real working dogs. Contrary to popular opinion, real stock work requires a calm, not an excitable dog. Of course, sometimes we get a dog that has a great deal of adrenaline, and we have to work very hard with that kind of dog, and a talented, but high adrenaline or nervous dog requires a handler with a lot of experience. Herding should not be viewed as a way to exercise a dog. Stock are not toys! They have to be treated properly. That means no chasing, and no biting of the stock (called gripping) unless the stock is challenging the dog. I did agility in my younger days with other herding breeds, and it is a very good outlet for this kind of dog.

It begins from birth I wonder what sort of birth he had and at what age he was taken away from mother I hope they can find ways to make him a better dog.
Aussies can be very headstrong and bossy, they were bred for these traits! We could argue he needs a job, but he needs to be able to regulate himself and his impulses to a degree to do that. Honestly, might be a good candidate for dietary supplements or maybe medication, it could help get him from overstimulated to a place where he can make sense of corrections and consequences. Diet might also improve attentiveness, so consider reducing sugar spikes. Kudos to everyone involved in helping this pup have a better life! 💜👍🏼💪🏼
This aussie seems like he's neurotic to me, owners definitely need to get some kind of job for him to channel all that nervous energy into. Watching him pace around and whine nonstop made me anxious through the screen... I feel for him and his owners.
So true! I see the biting coming from his frustration wanting to herd. The dog just doesn’t know what to do with his energy, he gets bored quickly. Getting the dog a job where he needs to think and pay attention will help for sure! Teaching the dog to use his nose more would be great.

That 2/10 is the pet quality that is usually rare and hard to get, especially in Aussies (a working breed.) I do not understand people who get these high strung protective dogs. (Aussies being defensive over children is literally a known trait they have, its literally to protect rowdy farm kids from being head butted by the billy.)

However, they can be extremely difficult when their brain is understimulated… especially with covid the cases will grow, I guess. Still, I think a herding breed can be a happy family pet, even without herding. As long as you give the dog a job. Mantrailing, doggydance/tricks, agillity, being a therapy-assistent… all nice jobs for a working breed dog.
@@natuurtherapieesratjemkes1676 I agree too, but not for every person; I have a husky, the only reason he isn't taking my head off is because his parents are an active couple. I def wouldn't recommend Aussies and Collies are first time pets though. But still, by the end of the day genetics will over rule any training you have if you do not stimulate their mind or learn what is truly making your dog behave that way. There is a reason Goldens and Labs are used in those particular events over Aussie and Collies, it is because just like the Aussie in the video, they get what is called "Collie sensitivity" (I want a rough collie for service work, but I need to watch out and see if the parents have this type of trait.) basically just means they themselves will feed off your anxiety and never get any work done. For this you need a dog that entirely goes against the breeds standard; They need the sensitivity to do farm work.
I was thinking the same thing ... that he's whining because of all that energy he doesn't know what to do with. Therefore he just revert to basic instincts. In the first video, it seems he's a quick study, but old habits die hard. I feel bad for him, he should be trained to work hard at something, he does have the mental and physical capacity for it.
I agree with so many other comments here. Prince is a working dog who's got a job so he's a very lucky boy. And it was great to watch an owner with good dog handling skills who was still struggling, and understand why. It's awesome to be able to learn some of the nuances, above just obedience, that create a balanced dog.
Prince is a phenomenal doberman. I had a doberman/rottweiler mix as a kid, and she had so many of the beautiful doberman qualities, but there's something about purebred dobermans that is really lovely. Maybe to some other people seeing the flying fur is startling, but I enjoy seeing the power of a doberman who is teaching another dog how to behave. You have to let dogs be dogs, ya know?

Working breeds need jobs... It's pretty simple. I worked with an Aussie breeder temporarily. They are so high strung, intelligent, and high energy and need something to do in order to stimulate them and keep them happy and balanced.
If Prince hated dealing with the dogs it would be a whole different story. But he’s dialed in and he’s happy. McCoy is beautiful but he’s got some serious issues. My son had an Aussie that is completely chill and loves the whole world. He has to rehome him when his gf moved out - He works 24-48 hours shifts as an EMT and just isn’t home. He found a family with an autisitic child and they adore each other.

Actually, Prince being of the working breed is bred to do a job. He's probably the most happy, stable dog ever because he's doing what he's been bred to do. Good job Prince!
Dog is definitely overweight and a diet change could help with some of his issues. He would be more willing to exercise. Have to wonder if he has any pain with the added weight and that's causing the sudden change to aggression.
I had a dog who helped teach dog manners. Her name was peaches. She really helped my friends dog annie. Annie is a hound rescue who also was attacked by two pitbulls so she is very reactive. When she meets dogs she used to howl in their face and panic, which would normally cause the other dogs to freak out and react. Peaches would never react shed give me the "mom what the hell" look wait a secone then correct annie. It calmed annie down around other dogs alot and helped with the anxiety yelling. It was always the hardest holding back and letting peaches give corrections. I just found these videos and its cool watching prince do it to the next level. Ive been around alot of dogs, and trained gun dogs for a long time. I think letting dogs teach eschother some manners works with their behavior instead of against it and is so effective
The 1% that think Prince's job is too hard are codependent and projecting that onto Prince. I have noticed in the dog world owners can be so neurotic and project all their own personal dysfunctions onto pets. Prince is living his 'dog' life. Dogs in the wild do this sort of thing often. Hierarchy has to be established and is constantly being challenged.
Having a working dog and expecting it to be a cute happy house pet to take to the dog park and play nicely...is like hiring the best personal assistant in the world who is next level genius and only wants to protect and impress you for free 24/7 and asking them to stand there looking pretty
I mentioned these videos to my wife at dinner today. She knows a little about training since she has competed in equestrian in two Olympic Games. Anyway, she brought up the story of one of her horse show friends who had a similar problem with their Australian Shepherd and their solution was to get the dog involved with competitive frisbee. It worked well with the Australian Shepherd as it pushes all of the dog's internal buttons and gets them a lot of exercise.
Yes frisbee is great for body and mind. I incorporate it with obedience and agility for my border collie. I always recommend for the safety of the dog, to keep the frisbee low🤗
Have the owners said what age the Collie left its mother? Most dogs would have been taught some boundaries from their mother, he seems to have missed some steps in his development. Prince did a really good job of trying to put him in his place. The Collie"s energy is hard to watch, his mind is frantic. Thank you for sharing his time with you, I look forward to seeing more.

These videos are fascinating. You are definitely the best trainer of 'problem dogs' I have ever seen. Some people do not understand context and criticise on the basis of 'Oh, the dog looks stressed' and 'You are doing things wrong'. They fail to realise these dogs are often brought here because the *owners* have tried several different avenues and don't know what else to do! That's why their dogs are a problem. I watched the incident like a million times. Prince needs a medal, he's so controlled. Prince is fully behind with clear access to the throat and he just holds his position like angry dog you're making a mistake I'm a seasoned vet!!
I'm sure many will say... oh this is a herding work dog, this is what they do... Every dog has an instinct from breeding, but training to harness an unwanted behavior can be accomplished... My Granddaddy had several cattle dogs, He retired the oldest to the house with Grandma while he worked with the younger dogs... He had one that kept chasing and killing the chickens. Grandad did everything he knew to correct this with no success... The other dogs started following this bad behavior of killing chickens. Grandma finally had enough of her chickens being killed. She let Old Buddy out. I wont go into details but Old Buddy schooled those dog real quick not to chase and kill Grandmas chickens... Prince is an added bonus to Beckman's Training. Trust me, Old Buddy wasn't as kind as Prince... Great job Mr. Beckman (Wonderdog) and Prince. :)
thats a great story- a lot of people forget that an old school beating can teach a lot in just a few seconds what years of therapy probably couldnt even teach to the same degree

You’re humanizing an animal and projecting the way that humans feel and react to the way animals do. Dogs do not compartmentalize.
It's because he has total faith in his alpha's judgement and ability to keep him safe, so he doesn't actually feel threatened even for a moment.

The opposite of a happy, fulfilled, working dog like Prince, is this nervous, aggressive, Aussie. With such energetic working breeds, I often say that if you don’t give them a job, they’ll give themselves one - and you’re not gonna like what they choose.
How can anybody see Prince and think he’s stressed? He’s the chillest dog. It takes a lot of pushing before he pushes back. And than he wants to play. That doesn’t seem like a stressed dog to me!

I've owned and trained Dobermans (professionally as a young girl in the 70s) and this breed loves to work. They love tasks. They are highly intelligent, loving and multifaceted animals. Prince loves exactly what he does and it shows in the way he reacts. Great team!

Prince is an absolute game changer. What could be better than an assistant who can speak the other dogs' language and let them know what's up in a way they understand? Not only that. but he's also there to be their friend because he genuinely likes other dogs and wants to help them be better. Everything Prince does in these videos is uplifting and a huge inspiration because at the end of the day, he gets to see a lot of transformations. There aren't too many dogs who get to say "Yeah that guy was being a bit of a jerk, but I helped him."

@@HWHY dude, for real. a lot of people that come to see Joel could fix their doggy issues by taking a play out of Stonnie's book- take them out into nature where they will be challenged, or anywhere (like a dog park) where they can bang up with and get their asses kicked by other more matured dogs. One of my herding dogs (working aussie/border collie/maybe malinois mix) is like this, and isn't so tough when it needs to cross a body of water, canyon, or rough house with German Shepherds.

He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.
Those who understand dogs can easily see that Prince is a huge benefit both for a trainers companion and for dogs with temperment issues. Great working dog and you can tell that he really loves what he's doing.

Most people, unless complitley new to dogs, could train a dog from puppy to be just like that, what changes is when people are inturdyced with harder dogs who have worse behavioural issues, puppy is a blank page, easy, but a dog with behaviourall issues isnt so easy.

My husband is a shepherd and he understands the importance of dogs learning and following instructions of their owners and the other dogs. We reward our working dogs as if they are family, they help us to put food on the table and part of production to agriculture. You’ve got to listen to your dogs needs as well as ours, it’s a bond and we’re a team. You have to show them respect.

Prince knows exactly what he's doing. not at all stressed at any moment...annoyed sometimes..but he has a self control, assertiveness and composure most of the humans(including myself) would die to have as a virtue. Also, i feel so sad about this aussie, I personally have gone through phases of social and other form of anxieties, and I know how it feels to not be relaxed at any moment and staying on the verge of panic all the time.

Watching you and Prince made me realize my older dog is helping and correcting our puppy (an out of control rescue, 10 month old with similar issues to McCoy) and I've stopped myself from preventing it and instead trust her to correct the puppy's unacceptable behaviour, which definitely makes a difference.

The whole alpha thing has been debunked though. What you are 100% right on, though, is that Prince was establishing a boundary. I think that this Aussie was just being a brat and Prince told him to knock it off and act like an adult, which at 3 years old, he is.

I don't believe one bit that the "alpha thing" has been debunked. the Aussie is at prince's house, on prince's territory and entering part of prince's pack. of course Joel is the top alpha though cuz prince listens to Joel. there is pecking order. I've worked at 3 dog daycares and rehabilitation center - most dogs are followers and want to be part of the pack but there are dominant dogs that have more tenacity and don't follow. pack mentality and hierarchy is instinctual. do you have to be an alpha to set boundaries, no, but do alphas tend to set boundaries, yes.

The whole “discrediting dominance” thing is a massive overstretch. The original research involved 3 male wolves from 3 different populations, put in a paddock together - who unsurprisingly fought. Mech later discredited this particular research, after subsequent tests showed that wolves living in families with parents and cubs were typically less aggressive. The original theory was one of a constant, linear structure - which was replaced with a more complex theory based on family structure. The point is, mech never said that wolves didn’t fight over mates and resources, never said that wolves didn’t have dominant and submissive roles and temperaments. He just discredited the original piece of research as a poor demonstration of natural behaviour in wolves - which it was.
@@chelseacushman2242 The wolf pack thing is also false. Dogs may have dominance and may form little packs with hierarchy, but wolves typically do not. Wolf packs are made up of two parents (or the alpha pair) and their children. They do not kill each other for no reason, the only time wolves kill each other would be during rival pack fights. Basically the parents or "alphas" would not kill their own children. Wolves do not fight for alpha or whatever either, if one of their children wants to "be alpha" they simply disperse and start their own pack. I'm not saying wolves don't display dominance though as they definitely do, its just not crazy alpha omega stuff like you see on tv. Only wolves in captivity have shown signs of legitimate hierarchy.

Prince is like the epitome of a working dog they need a job to do to feel fulfilled and his obedience is top notch as well, anyone who thinks differently doesn't really know much about the doberman dog breed they buy into the stereotypical myths about them
Prince is a legend. He's no different to a parent telling an unruly kid to behave. If he was stressed he wouldn't release or even come forward in the 1st place. More people are realising dogs are the best mentors and my eldest collie is used for the same thing in my sessions. I would personally like to see less popping/force and a bit more praise with the preferred behaviours, but your technique is as force-free as I think you can make it and you get the results, and switch to Prince when safe to do so; people need to remember these sessions are edited for time and people come to you as a last resort, so all the standard techniques will have been tried already and this is a last ditch attempt to reset the dog's behaviour. Great job!

that dogs energy is fueled by his anxiousness. even the owner says that no matter how much exercise he gets, he just never stops. I think that time away from his humans will be the best thing for him. I wonder if he'd behave the same way if his humans were not present.
The dog needs mental stimulation. Not just physical exercise. A working line dog out of its mind.
Yeah, this dog needs a live in mentor dog who is really laid back and needs a set routine where he goes and works and then eats and rests and then plays and rests and then works, eats and rests and that way he can know what is expected. And part of that means working on teaching stay and relax as part of the day of work. So getting rewarded with treats for down stay after a really tiring workout is a suggestion.

I had a female Newfy that was a lot like Prince. If two other dogs were fighting, she’d just insert herself in the middle and stand there. She was so big and fluffy, they couldn’t see each other anymore and the fight just dissolved.
It didn’t make her stressed out or have a bad life. Working breeds are happier doing a job, any job.

That Aussie needs a JOB. He is a working breed. Hes meant to herd cattle, sheep, goats, chicken, geese etc... or at least be in some herding classes. All I saw was a dog with no job. He was herding his own people and protecting them from everything like Aussies that have a flock to care for do.
Prince did a great job standing up for himself. Hes an amazing dog. And I don't see him being stressed either. He always looks happy and content. How could he not be? Hes with his people and a lot of other dogs daily. That's all most dogs would probably wish for.

Aussies don't "care for flocks" they herd them, they don't protect them. They're reactive because herding dogs are bred to be sensitive and reactive, they have to be to do their jobs well. Mix fear with reactivity and you get neurotic dogs like this guy, it's an easy turn to take whether it's with genetics or environment which is why you see so many aussies and other herding breeds like this.

Even WITH the occasional difficulty or challenge, I still think Prince has a better life than most
I think a slightly more realistic option for most people to exercise their dogs that have herding instincts is agility instead of herding.
When you go to a club or trainer to work on herding, the dog has to do an instinct test. If the dog is too high strung they may not allow it to work with the livestock. Hence why I recommend agility, you can do that with almost any dog. A lot of places offer private classes so you can do it with your reactive dogs as well. Just some food for thought :)

I agree with you totally. I live on a ranch and my dogs (border collies) are real working dogs. Contrary to popular opinion, real stock work requires a calm, not an excitable dog. Of course, sometimes we get a dog that has a great deal of adrenaline, and we have to work very hard with that kind of dog, and a talented, but high adrenaline or nervous dog requires a handler with a lot of experience. Herding should not be viewed as a way to exercise a dog. Stock are not toys! They have to be treated properly. That means no chasing, and no biting of the stock (called gripping) unless the stock is challenging the dog. I did agility in my younger days with other herding breeds, and it is a very good outlet for this kind of dog.

It begins from birth I wonder what sort of birth he had and at what age he was taken away from mother I hope they can find ways to make him a better dog.
Aussies can be very headstrong and bossy, they were bred for these traits! We could argue he needs a job, but he needs to be able to regulate himself and his impulses to a degree to do that. Honestly, might be a good candidate for dietary supplements or maybe medication, it could help get him from overstimulated to a place where he can make sense of corrections and consequences. Diet might also improve attentiveness, so consider reducing sugar spikes. Kudos to everyone involved in helping this pup have a better life! 💜👍🏼💪🏼

So true! I see the biting coming from his frustration wanting to herd. The dog just doesn’t know what to do with his energy, he gets bored quickly. Getting the dog a job where he needs to think and pay attention will help for sure! Teaching the dog to use his nose more would be great.

Still, I think a herding breed can be a happy family pet, even without herding. As long as you give the dog a job. Mantrailing, doggydance/tricks, agillity, being a therapy-assistent… all nice jobs for a working breed dog.
@@natuurtherapieesratjemkes1676 I agree too, but not for every person; I have a husky, the only reason he isn't taking my head off is because his parents are an active couple. I def wouldn't recommend Aussies and Collies are first time pets though.
But still, by the end of the day genetics will over rule any training you have if you do not stimulate their mind or learn what is truly making your dog behave that way. There is a reason Goldens and Labs are used in those particular events over Aussie and Collies, it is because just like the Aussie in the video, they get what is called "Collie sensitivity" (I want a rough collie for service work, but I need to watch out and see if the parents have this type of trait.) basically just means they themselves will feed off your anxiety and never get any work done. For this you need a dog that entirely goes against the breeds standard; They need the sensitivity to do farm work.
I was thinking the same thing ... that he's whining because of all that energy he doesn't know what to do with. Therefore he just revert to basic instincts. In the first video, it seems he's a quick study, but old habits die hard. I feel bad for him, he should be trained to work hard at something, he does have the mental and physical capacity for it.
I agree with so many other comments here. Prince is a working dog who's got a job so he's a very lucky boy. And it was great to watch an owner with good dog handling skills who was still struggling, and understand why. It's awesome to be able to learn some of the nuances, above just obedience, that create a balanced dog.
Prince is a phenomenal doberman. I had a doberman/rottweiler mix as a kid, and she had so many of the beautiful doberman qualities, but there's something about purebred dobermans that is really lovely. Maybe to some other people seeing the flying fur is startling, but I enjoy seeing the power of a doberman who is teaching another dog how to behave. You have to let dogs be dogs, ya know?

Working breeds need jobs... It's pretty simple. I worked with an Aussie breeder temporarily. They are so high strung, intelligent, and high energy and need something to do in order to stimulate them and keep them happy and balanced.
If Prince hated dealing with the dogs it would be a whole different story. But he’s dialed in and he’s happy. McCoy is beautiful but he’s got some serious issues. My son had an Aussie that is completely chill and loves the whole world. He has to rehome him when his gf moved out - He works 24-48 hours shifts as an EMT and just isn’t home. He found a family with an autisitic child and they adore each other.

Actually, Prince being of the working breed is bred to do a job. He's probably the most happy, stable dog ever because he's doing what he's been bred to do. Good job Prince!
I agree this dog needs a job AND a diet. He'd be easier to handle it he wasn't 20+ pounds overweight.

Dog is definitely overweight and a diet change could help with some of his issues. He would be more willing to exercise. Have to wonder if he has any pain with the added weight and that's causing the sudden change to aggression.
I had a dog who helped teach dog manners. Her name was peaches. She really helped my friends dog annie. Annie is a hound rescue who also was attacked by two pitbulls so she is very reactive. When she meets dogs she used to howl in their face and panic, which would normally cause the other dogs to freak out and react. Peaches would never react shed give me the "mom what the hell" look wait a secone then correct annie. It calmed annie down around other dogs alot and helped with the anxiety yelling. It was always the hardest holding back and letting peaches give corrections. I just found these videos and its cool watching prince do it to the next level. Ive been around alot of dogs, and trained gun dogs for a long time. I think letting dogs teach eschother some manners works with their behavior instead of against it and is so effective

The 1% that think Prince's job is too hard are codependent and projecting that onto Prince. I have noticed in the dog world owners can be so neurotic and project all their own personal dysfunctions onto pets. Prince is living his 'dog' life. Dogs in the wild do this sort of thing often. Hierarchy has to be established and is constantly being challenged.
Get him onto a treadmill to help with his energy. Probably more laid back when he is tired. Good luck!
Having a working dog and expecting it to be a cute happy house pet to take to the dog park and play nicely...is like hiring the best personal assistant in the world who is next level genius and only wants to protect and impress you for free 24/7 and asking them to stand there looking pretty

I mentioned these videos to my wife at dinner today. She knows a little about training since she has competed in equestrian in two Olympic Games. Anyway, she brought up the story of one of her horse show friends who had a similar problem with their Australian Shepherd and their solution was to get the dog involved with competitive frisbee. It worked well with the Australian Shepherd as it pushes all of the dog's internal buttons and gets them a lot of exercise.
Yes frisbee is great for body and mind. I incorporate it with obedience and agility for my border collie. I always recommend for the safety of the dog, to keep the frisbee low🤗
Have the owners said what age the Collie left its mother? Most dogs would have been taught some boundaries from their mother, he seems to have missed some steps in his development. Prince did a really good job of trying to put him in his place. The Collie"s energy is hard to watch, his mind is frantic. Thank you for sharing his time with you, I look forward to seeing more.

These videos are fascinating. You are definitely the best trainer of 'problem dogs' I have ever seen. Some people do not understand context and criticise on the basis of 'Oh, the dog looks stressed' and 'You are doing things wrong'. They fail to realise these dogs are often brought here because the *owners* have tried several different avenues and don't know what else to do! That's why their dogs are a problem. Keep up the immense work. God bless

I watched the incident like a million times. Prince needs a medal, he's so controlled. Prince is fully behind with clear access to the throat and he just holds his position like angry dog you're making a mistake I'm a seasoned vet!!
I'm sure many will say... oh this is a herding work dog, this is what they do... Every dog has an instinct from breeding, but training to harness an unwanted behavior can be accomplished... My Granddaddy had several cattle dogs, He retired the oldest to the house with Grandma while he worked with the younger dogs... He had one that kept chasing and killing the chickens. Grandad did everything he knew to correct this with no success... The other dogs started following this bad behavior of killing chickens. Grandma finally had enough of her chickens being killed. She let Old Buddy out. I wont go into details but Old Buddy schooled those dog real quick not to chase and kill Grandmas chickens... Prince is an added bonus to Beckman's Training. Trust me, Old Buddy wasn't as kind as Prince... Great job Mr. Beckman (Wonderdog) and Prince. :)
thats a great story- a lot of people forget that an old school beating can teach a lot in just a few seconds what years of therapy probably couldnt even teach to the same degree
