This is her first single ever! She was twenty. Imagine people back then witnessing this kind of debut! We were all in awe! The music industry was shaking.
Vision Of Love is the very first single of her career, from the self titled album. She was 20 years old in this performance and the song went number #1 on the billboard hot 100
Yes, when she debuted she was phenomenal out of the gate. I remember where I was driving when I heard this song on the radio for the first time and I about went off the road. It was that powerful. It was like WHO is this singing? That was her first single. Instant star.
I remember seeing Mariah on TV for the first time the same year as this SNL performance -- a few months prior to this she debuted on Saturday NIght at the Apollo and she did "Vision of Love" in front of a huge theatre full of people. It was electric. We were all blown away. Everybody knew from that moment that this girl was gonna be a massive star.
This was her very first ever single released in 1990. This song is credited for revolutionizing the use of melismatis style in singing and has been named by music critics “The Most Influential Pop Vocal Performance of all time” and the reason why there’s AMERICAN IDOL. At that time mariah’s major influences vocally were Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder. Now you gotta react to “IF IT’S OVER” live at SNL 1991. You guys will be amaze Great reaction btw thank you!
I remember her music would come on the radio in the car as a kid (on cheap VW bug speakers), and thinking how amazing she was! One of the best artist's back then!!
Mariah sings all the background on the record. I recommend listening to the album version of this song. Especially since the audio of this performance is terrible lol. This was her debut single. It went #1 on the charts. The album also went #1 for 11 consecutive weeks and was the best selling album of the year. All 4 singles from the album went to #1 in the US. She won a Grammy for Vision of Love and a Grammy for best new artist.
What I love about Mariah is that it’s always too much. She’s way too beautiful. Way too talented. Way too class and elegant for her age (she was 20 years old I believe). Even her naaame sounds elusive 🤣 Great reaction ! Love it ! Could you react to Mariah Carey singing I want to know what love is at X Factor UK please ? It’s a powerful performance with a standing ovation !
The first time I heard Mariah was the same day this song came out on the radio in 1990. I was just listening to the radio and suddenly this song came on. At first I thought this was a Gospel song. Then, as the song went along my jaw dropped and I started wondering who she was. At the end of the song, they announced her name. Next, I needed to know when she was going to be on TV. I first saw her on The Arsenio Hall Show or Showtime At The Apollo. I was shocked that she sounded just like the record live. Yes, I knew that first instant that I heard her that it was over for everybody else and a new queen had taken the thrown. It was clear she was going to surpass even Whitney Houston and Madonna in sales. Mariah was like an Earthquake that shook the world from the very beginning. She sold more records than any artist male or female in the 1990s. To this day I think Mariah and Lara Fabian from Belgium are the two best female voices I've ever heard. Those two dominate the world. Yes, I do respect Aretha, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine and Selena. But, Mariah and Lara are just on another universe of domination when they were in their prime.
Glad you said it. That you're distracted. Paying attention to all the wrong things. Versus paying attention to the amazing vocalist, legend. Also, stop judging and the world might be a better place.
Yas my peeps. I was in JR Highschool when I first heard Mariah. Vision of Love and Love Takes Time and Someday were on the radio all the time. I had her first debut album cassette tape. It never left my Walkman LOL. I remember people at school were like how do you say her name again? LOL MARIAHHHH!!!! 1990!
"And you know that you did". That part stuck out like a sore thumb because this performance was live and it was her male backup singer singing that part. In the album version that part was actually sung by Mariah herself. It's a technique she kinda pioneered in the 90s which is called "layering". She had actually written this song with Ben Margulies before she was even discovered by Tommy Mottola and was signed on to any label, so the song was on the demotape that she had passed to Tommy at the party where she was introduced to him. They reworked the song and eventually incorporated her raw vocals from that demotape with the newer studio recording so her vocals really blended seamlessly together like she was singing back and forth with herself.
And Simon is back with his fun facts !! HAHA Fun fact 1- This was Mariah's VERY FIRST single, from her 1st album (Mariah Carey, orginal title ;)) :) You can see she was very shy. Fun fact 2 -It went to number 1 on the billboard hot 100, so did her 4 following singles : Love takes time, Someday, I dont wanna cry, and Emotions (1st single from her second album). Fun fact 3 - Love you guys ! Simon xx
The moment I heard this song on the radio in 1989 I knew she would be a legend. I went the following day to get the single cassette at Sam Goody’s. She was only 18-19 at the time.
Check out Vanishing SNL Rehearsal 1990, that one is stellar and showcases her agility and you can ask any lamb and we'll tell this is an iconic rehearsal 😄👌😁💖
Ahahhaha YES we all did. I was 13 and besides Whitney Housten there was NO one with a VOICE especially one sooooo flexible, soulful, huge range and fresh like Mariah brought. All through the 90’s... it was MC world. It was all about THE voice. That specific performance she was 20 years old and was her first single that went to number 1. Please react to Mariah singing AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL in 1990. That WAS her first TV appearance and BEFORE she released any music. I thing she was still 19 at that point( not sure what time of the year in 1990 that was )
Mariah was clearly a star from the first time she was seen. She was also incredibly attractive which helped her considerably. Hard to understand because you feel people have seen so many imitators, but most people’s reaction was “holy shit.” She walked in and was instantly compared to who many considered the greatest singer ever, Whitney.
This song came out when i was ten (i'm 41 now!) and i kinda knew she was gonna be a big deal, from this amazing song alone and her performance/voice. There was this huge buzz around her name it was obvious she was gonna be a huge star, but never thought it would be in the way it turned out to be! To this day, this is still my favorite song of hers, and i'm not even a fan! - What a debut single to come out with!!
Madonna and Whitney were the top female artists in 1990. Mariah was primed as the franchise of Columbia (Sony), to compete with Whitney (Arista Records) and Madonna (Maverick Records). From the get go Mariah was marketed as a big artist... she was never given the same treatment as someone who was new to the industry, they knew they struck gold with Mariah. She was young, she can sing, and sing well, AND she's white looking (correction: America was as racist then as it is now), her skin color was important as that means she can appeal to the "mass market", she doesn't have to sing pop for white people to buy her records. Whitney and Michael got crossover appeal due to their pop sound, Mariah can sing soul and r&b and white America would buy her records regardless. Whitney introduced melisma to popular music, but it was Mariah that made it into the STANDARD sound. This is the same time the "Mariah vs Whitney rivalry" began, Mariah was hot on her heels when she first came out. People initially thought that "Vision of Love" was Whitney's new single, nobody at that time can sing the way she does, except for Whitney, so people generally assumed that it was Whitney singing on the radio, little did they know that it was a new artist. I'm gonna end here lol as I noticed I wrote too much. But this is what people said when Mariah first started "A white girl who sings black".
Correction, she LOOKS white and people thought she was which added to the appeal. She’s still half black, which then allowed her to reach out to and relate to the young, mixed demographic since ppl who were mixed often said they never felt black and/or white enough, so she was like.. a role model for them
This was all 🧢. Nobody knew who Mariah Carey was. There was no hype. She hadn't been a feature on some other song or had another single. This was her intro and even I as a 12 year old hip hop head was like "who was that" when I heard this.
Yes we instantly knew she would rule the planet and she did because in the 1990s she sold more records than anyone on the planet. More than Madonna, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Nirvana, U2, Tupac, and Biggie Smalls. She dominated in an era when Rap and Pop ruled and she came in and took over with ballads and later on more upbeat songs. In the 1990s alone she sold over 125 million records. That is an average of 12 and a half million records for 10 straight years. Her biggest selling record sold over 26 million copies called Music Box. By the end of the 90s she even started dating the best male vocal singer of all-time named Luis Miguel. She did all that before she turned 30 years old. So, Cottons you were asking how we felt when we first saw Mariah in which actually this performance was the first time I saw her, I would say I was in shock and my sisters were literally crying really hard like babies because Mariah's voice and soul overtook them. It was kind of funny to see that family moment. But, I've been a fan of her ever since then. She even sang with the legendary Opera singer the legendary Luciano Pavarotti in Italy. That was crazy to watch too. Long live the icon Mariah Carey who is also from my home state New York and where this performance also happened.
So because it was recorded on a VHS tape that was erased and recorded on multiple times it sounds different then the original version but still amazing. This was her first album.
Fun Facts: Mariah just months earlier before this SNL performance was taking the LIRR train from Huntington Long Island to Manhattan in New York to work in a salon and other jobs she had. That is why Mariah is so skinny in this video. She was not rich yet. This was only a few months after her first record came out and she had only been given an advance of money because she had not started to make big money yet. This was the raw Mariah with dreams and goals to reach.
Yall funny. The add lib was funny by the back ground singer. Lol 😆 young Mariah was 🔥 tho. I loved her growing up. I tried to hit her high notes butt...well anyway. 90s was a good time for hip hop and r/b..
His hair is funny but he’s a very good singer. There’s a rehearsal video of him singing with her and playing the piano somewhere on you tube. He sounded great. Is that Randy Jackson in the back? I’ve noticed him in other videos but not this one
Lenny Kravitz actually met the pre-stardom Mariah in New York as a coat checker and by her vocal skills alone back then he already knew she is meant for something super great in the future... ruclips.net/video/hs8GKHmMbaA/видео.html

At their age, I was aware of music from decades before, even the films in which some were from. This, being English and knowing the American charts - all distinctions too was simply normal to most. It's sad to think that this generation will become segregated by ignorance and the lack of education, knowledge, and the ability to assess and not assume. Furthermore, I'm only generalizing the demographics of today and not the guys making this one-whom I happen to enjoy watching.
Hi beautiful Pamola and handsome Anthony I really enjoy your videos.can you please do a reaction to Mariah Carey’s dream lover. I must say that you Pamola have a beautiful smile and you are one beautiful lady.Anthony you are so handsome.from Caroline Mathieson 😎😎😎😎❤️💕💕
How can you really enjoy the song if you keep stopping it. Can you? Not even funny. God... Stop trying to be a star man just, we want y'all to appreciate the performance get it?.. Respect. Thank you for reacting though this is my favorite Mariah Carey song that you just murdered but lemme get off that.
@@TheCottons yea nah I wasn't trying to be rude I like to see reactions to performances but I just don't like the ones where they stop it too much and don't even get the vibe of the performance. Imo these reactions are about subscribers sharing music that they love with y'all so y'all can enjoy, not here to watch y'all do a stand up comedy performance. Look I honestly wasn't trying to be rude, this is how I feel. It was annoying how much you stopped it and then when you did stop it your observations were disrespectful and not even funny. I guess we can just agree to disagree if you don't see my point. Respect and love though.
@@TheCottons I would also like to add that I do like some of the things you choose to react to so I subscribed. No intent to upset y'all you seem nice. Just I felt like the guy stopped it too much.
This is her first single ever! She was twenty. Imagine people back then witnessing this kind of debut! We were all in awe! The music industry was shaking.
Wow I can imagine!🤩
I will always be here for Mariah. Lov u guys.
Thank you for the support ☺️
Vision Of Love is the very first single of her career, from the self titled album. She was 20 years old in this performance and the song went number #1 on the billboard hot 100
Wow so young and so incredible
This is why it’s highly recommended to react to her stuff from 1990-1998 , they don’t make music like that no more
Yes, when she debuted she was phenomenal out of the gate. I remember where I was driving when I heard this song on the radio for the first time and I about went off the road. It was that powerful. It was like WHO is this singing? That was her first single. Instant star.

“ It’s like her voice made my neck stuck !” Literally me every time I hear her sing 😂😂
Idk if you noticed but that’s Randy Jackson playing bass behind her at 3:47. Yes the judge Randy Jackson from American Idol. 😂

one of the most iconic runs ever..the studio version..just how fluidly she goes through the notes is what really got people

jaw dropping performance!
Mariah Carey is the BEST. Beyoncé said vision of love and Mariah were what made her want to sing!
"And you know that you did". That part stuck out like a sore thumb because this performance was live and it was her male backup singer singing that part.
