  • In this episode, we tour the non-aroid plants of LANNA international exotic plants show in Chiangmai. There are tons of rare species in different genuses, and hints of the next plant trends to come! Follow me as I tour bromeliads, begonias, huperzia, carnivorous plants, jewel orchids, unusually variegated bananas, caudex, cacti and succulent and more! A few vendors actually shared their care tips for the genus in great detail, which I did not hesitate to share immediately in this episode! You will learn and discover so much in this jaw-dropping episode.

    Some comments on the complex hybrid Paphiopedilum orchids shown here (by a German orchidist with a VERY Russian name!). These are all derived from semiterrestrial Asian slipper orchids, and were a major focus of specialist European and East and West coast US orchidists during the 19th and early 20th centuries, along with Cattleyas, standard sized Cymbidiums, and hybrid Odontoglossums derived from cool climate montane Colombian and Andean members of the genus. The complex hybrid Paphs still tend to require cooler night time temperatures, particularly in the fall, to thrive and set buds, and thus fare poorly long term in hot lowland climates. They were and are bred for very round, heavy substanced flowers, unlike the generally somewhat more warmth tolerant, mottle leaf Paphiopedilum hybrids, which soared in popularity in the 1980s with the development of vinicolor (deep purple red to wine colored) Paphiopedilums. As the mottle leaf Paphiopedilum flowers and exhibition standards for them closely approximate their ancestral bloom forms, while those of the cool temperature favoring complex hybrids do not, a much higher % of mottle leaf Paphiopedilum seedlings are considered to have high quality blooms. As a result, the complex hybrids have lost much of their popularity in Western countries. Many find the heavy black dorsal spotting of some complex hybrid Paphs unttractive (they are referred to as "toads" by some orchidists).
    The spray flowered, tall inflorescence Paphs are often derived from Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, which is endemic to Mount Kinabalu. The P. malipoense is one of a subgenus (Parvisepalum) of small plants that spread by underground stems and produce flowers with balloonlike pouches in blooms that are huge relative to the size of the plants that produce them. The first to be introduced into cultivation (from Vietnam) was P. delenatii, which has white side petals and dorsal with a bright pink pouch. Subsequent "discovery" of additional members of this group in Southern China and Southeast Asia, particularly the brilliant yellow P. armeniacum, triggered a frenzy of interest and (over)collection by orchidists in Europe and North America.

    Sean...a huge THANK YOU! For featuring non aroids! I really appreciated it...though I did hope you had filmed what looked like huge and unusual coloured labisias that I spyed on the shelf of that Thai fashion designer. The snippet of care tips from the tassel fern grower was also invaluable since there's not a lot of information in English about their care or the different varieties. I've just been winging it with how to keep them alive...so far it's been 50/50...😢😥
    I've been loving these plant show series both the Thai and Indonesian ones even if I'm slightly aroid fatigued, but I still appreciate the beauty of gorgeous healthy plants.
    I hope you and your mum have fully recovered by the time this video has been uploaded.

    Honestly, it’s so inspiring how artistic some of these breeders are.
    Sadly , we see a lot of people in the market strictly for cash… & that’s it…but people need to survive.
    But then you have some really, really magical souls & it’s like the love & creativity surrounding plants , knows no bounds.
    They choose the colours or forms to breed on , selecting what they like or what they think others will.
    And then they Make art out of physical life , & then other continue this artistic tradition by combining with things they like and so on.
    It’s a really special sequence of events.
    I’m a crazy Begonia fiend myself… 😂😂
    I’ve over 200 varieties I plan on growing up to eventually hybridise (and I don’t plan to stop at 200!!😂) .
    I’m from the uk , and sadly Begonia aren’t really respected or thought about in the same way they are everywhere else , because there grown as outside - flower plants over here…. There proper dramatic & huge flowers & yeah… people don’t really go for the foliage, because they don’t even know about it….
    My personal life goal is to own the largest recognised Begonia collection for the UK.. (big aspirations I know.. but achievable😂) and try to get them more into the mainstream , because although they already are…. As I said , there’s alot of people that don’t actually realise just how diverse the genus is… there’s over 2000 species currently, and they find & create more every year.
    There truly is something for everyone , in every colour, shape , size or form you want.
    And , usually you can get plugs&Rhizomes super cheap…. So growing your own is easy , affordable & super rewarding.
    They can also be extremely challenging too… even for the experienced , so there also good for people looking for a hard plant challenge.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah its crazy that begonias are not more loved. Theres a certain barrier of entry for begonia collecting because most people misunderstand their care and fail… or maybe didnt have the right environment or care style for them. They are truly wonderful beings

    • @PaletteBegonia
      @PaletteBegonia 7 месяцев назад

      @@onlyplants over here for me in the UK , there loved but not for the foliage... It's all outside stuff that's annual , so People only think of them as outside show plants that'll eventually die in the first frost.. basically everyone I've spoken to about begonia here , have no idea the foliage can be so vast in variety , they think it's just green in different shades.
      And they genuinely , couldn't be more wrong with an observation 🤣 I agree though I think alot of people mess up with the medium.. which causes so many different issues & they get turned off the plant. But I don't understand why.. when these same people screw up Alocasia cuttings worth hundreds & try multiple times.. 🤣
      I've got ALL sorts , but Begonia are my speciality and though I've had issues at times , it makes the end results far , far more rewarding when you've been through that , and seen the bad.. because then you know how to properly appreciate it in its good stages of life.
      Learning + failure is part of the fun 😊
