As a Flint resident, this crime must never be forgotten. Meanwhile we are still paying top-shelf prices for public water we do not trust enough to drink.

They ended up spending hundreds of millions of dollars anyway to replace the pipes. You can't cut corners when it comes to infrastructure. It just costs you more in the end and people's lives.

I went to Flint A year ago and it was a ghost town and the locals acted almost defeated like they didnt expect help to come.
The only thing keeping flint alive is the GM truck plant.
Well it’s only been 10 years
This isn’t just lead at this point and not just flint. So many waterways in Michigan have been polluted. We haven’t been able to eat fish on a major lake and river for years now.
You deserve compensation. It's outrageous!

the black majority commissioners of the city of Flint hired the black unqualified utility director who created this mess. This white governor did not hire the unqualified black utility director who had ZERO training or experience with water treatment.
I followed this from the beginning as I have 500 hours in water treatment training from University of Florida and Cal State university Sacramento and 10 years of experience with water utilities. Blame the black Flint commission for this mess they were the ones who made the bad choices, not the white governor.

It’s frustrating as an American to hear that there are people in my own country who don’t have access to clean drinking water. It’s frustrating that the Government doesn’t even care. It’s even more frustrating that more people aren’t outraged by this, and still put high hopes in the morality of politicians.
I’m proud that so many Flint residents are leading the charge in keeping their community in tact. I wish more communities could have relationships like Flint. They seem very tight knit.

I've heard places in Illinois and in Louisiana and as well as New York with sewage backups and the sewage water getting into the water pipes

Speaking as someone living in Flint myself? Yes, this is still going on, but in ways you won't expect, and in some ways it's actually gotten worse.
Them saying that the water is safe actually IS NOT a total lie - some places in Flint does have safe drinking water again after the pipes have been replaced. Thing is it's not exactly the residential areas - it's places like downtown around the University of Michigan and some of our medical facilities. A couple bars and restaurants in Flint are able to just use water straight from the tap and it's got no impurities.
The damage has been done though, because said bars and restaurants I mentioned, even after having confirmed that the water is safe, still use filters for their water on the off-chance there's something in the water that isn't being detected such as Legionnaires. Fact of the matter is, this current generation of people - from the older people to the younger ones - will probably never trust our water again. Even some of us that moved away from Flint to somewhere that certainly does have safe drinking water doesn't trust the water and will still get water from jugs and bottles; we've seen people deteriorate because of the water in the end, it doesn't just affect health and IQ levels it also caused mental illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder to get markedly worse, sometimes irreversibly worse.
What this news bit doesn't touch on though? Covid. Covid made getting water a lot more difficult in some cases - not everyone has the luxury of going to water pickup sites for free water for one reason or another, so a lot of families went to places like Walmart or Krogers or similar places that actually have little stations that let you refill gallon jugs of water for just pennies, and even those that had the water pickup sites you were looking at a lot of people coming through an area. While A LOT of us in Flint are extremely respectful of each other - to the point that we didn't argue at all about wearing masks when it was first brought up and protests did not happen here outside of street graffiti due to not wanting to disrupt others' lives - a good chunk of us also aren't in good health thanks to the Water crisis. The direct result? It became too risky to go out and get water like we used to. Those water stations I mentioned? A good chunk of them got shut down due to risk of contamination. And water delivery is... limited. I'm not sure how other families handled it overall, but my own family ended up paying more to get fresh jugs rather than refills, and then those new jugs sat on shelves for a few days after being thoroughly disinfected to make sure they didn't have the virus on them, sometimes longer (for clarification as to why - both parents are immunocompromised, elderly, with bad lungs, top of the list of at risk), and we were having money issues as is.
The water crisis is still going on. And it's gonna keep going on for a long while for a lot reasons, even long after all the pipes are replaced.
As a canadian and a lefty when i frst heard of this i was livid....we in Canada have very good water from the tap.....as we should

Damn, I see this as a disgrace and I would rather have the national guard come and build than that damn wall. I’ve concluded that some places just have clean running drinking water and the rest of us need to use extra filters. It may be best to leave these areas until the water systems are replaced because it’s not fair to use people in Michigan like testing subjects. I think a lot of places have bad water but it’s finally getting mainstream and even though it’s taking long we are learning.

I was living in Michigan when this crisis started. In northern Michigan the tap water comes from ground water, and lake water. It's so clean that Ice Mountain bottled water is Michigan tap water. I'm not surprised that nothing has changed as Michigan is completely bankrupt and very corrupt. And has been for decades. I hope and pray that things get better. Thank you.

It doesn't matter the communities this happens in, officials work with big corps. They don't want huge payout settlements. So it's hidden as long as no one in the community gets wiser. Salute to the doctor for sticking with this.

I am curious to know if all those plastic bottles are being recycled. Otherwise, Flint might have another problem. Not as serious as lead in the water, for sure. But trash is trash.

I'm from Flint. My kids and I lived with this untill the hives and rashes got to be too much, bathing from bottles isn't fun. .. we were fortunate to be able to leave, we moved north. But we went thru it and half of my family is still going thru the aftermath of this. It's still not fixed. It's 2024 ...

In developing countries they have trucks going around the neighborhood with 20 liter water jugs that mount on dispensers (water cooler). These are refillable and get taken back every time new ones get delivered. That would be cheaper for residents and cause less plastic waste and contamination in water from the plastic.
This is still going on in Flint today! 😭

Some people believe activated charcoal can remove heavy metals from the body, including lead. It probably won’t remove all of it, but it could help. If it was my kid, I would try it.

Sounds like what happened in my town, point pleasant, WV. A plant up river from us was dumping chemicals in the river and it got into our drinking water, caused cancer, liver damage, decreased fertility, and increased risk of asthma and thyroid diseases. Lead poisoning is MUCH worse but they should pay for the wrong they have done to these residents of Flint.
And correction gm truck and bus used to dump chemicals that ended up getting into the pipelines around van slyke. All they got was a fine and it was swept under the rug.
I have installed water lines for cities and municipalities in. Have you ever met the head of your water department‘s? Lots of cities have lead pipes, and even when they are replaced, the lines going to houses with only be replaced usually to the shut off but that depends on the city or town. Do you go to town or city council meetings? How about when a cruise shows up on your street and they hold you up in your car I’m sure you’re one of the pleasant ones…. People need to take part in their communities before it gets too flint state cause it may be too late.
Fahrenheit 11/9 was an excellent documentary that explained this, even though it was mostly about DJT...
That entire governmental body should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

This is one of those clear examples of it might cost a lot of money to build something but ignoring a problem causes a much larger problem. They tried to save money by switching water source and not spend money on treating it and now they have to rebuild the system, then bottled water which their is the extra cost(i am curious of where this bottle water comes from hopefully not the same multiplical water of flint) which also would be the extra plastic trash and time wasted on having to get bottled water, and then there is the medical and living expenses that will go on for at least a century and not only kids but pregnant women. (fuq this makes me so sad & mad) and presumably legal cost both settlements and court cost.
It troubles me that other communities have not received coverage: Placitas, NM, Jemez Springs, NM, and 4 Corners. None of us would drink tea colored tap or well water. And what about their animals?
It would be great to provide more non-bottled options also, like self sanitizing public depencer stations, or something.☺️
I work in the water industry and we hear about this case often. This tragedy is not discussed enough. But I wanted you to know in my state we use this as an example of what can and will happen if you are negligent.
We learn how it happened.

That's why you shouldn't have lead water pipes. It can be safe as a protective mineral layer often forms inside the pipe but like you see in Flint... It can go horribly wrong.

Seems if you google the phrase "Flint clean water" there was an article that read Flint has had clean water for over 1 year now. Why is it still under reported? The report was released early December.

Unsung heroes
I now have to purchase a new water filter where I live, and I do NOT drink the tap water. I purchase bottled water, and use the filter to wash dishes, and cookware. I do NOT live in Flint, however, I know there are problems across the US with toxic and unpalatable water to drink. (Mesa/Tempe, AZ, Newport News, VA, a city in Connecticut !)
And I still wonder why pencils still have led in them... 🤔🤔🤔
