The guitarist Ivan Mendez said later that he really struggled to keep his focus in this particular song. And the last two words of ''stay'' was the most beautiful sound done by a human he had ever heard in his life.
I think we'll forever like Ivan for these collabs, he has the same humble soul like Angelina.

( Ivan Mendez) In This song , The accompaniment may not have been the ultimate that it could be, but he was playing under very difficult circumstances! Besides the fact that he says he sometimes forgets he’s accompanying her and finds himself listening and marveling, her style is also that she doesn’t tell him which songs they’ll be recording ahead of time - he just comes, visits with the family for a while, and then they go into the recording studio. They have one or two takes only!! She likes it to be spontaneous, so he has no choice but to learn the song as fast as he can and then they are off and running! It’s especially amazing for Angelina to record so beautifully like that, but it’s also amazing that he can learn quickly and adapt as they go, and that’s the take that’s used! All in all, it has to be said that these recordings with Ivan are jewels!!

She's my favorite singer of all time, so you're not wrong.
I truly feel Angelina is the absolute best vocalist on any stage today. She can sing so many genre with heart wrenching ease..
Sebs, this is not only live, but according to the guitarist, Ivan Mendez, all these home recordings at her house are unplanned, done in 1 or 2 takes. She picks a song she wants to sing on the spur of the moment, so he spends 15 minutes trying to learn the song while AJ gets the lyrics on her phone & Grandma Mery gets the videocam ready. She says "just follow me" & begins to sing with both winging it as they go. Ivan really does an amazing job under those circumstances. He said the hardest thing about playing for her is maintaining his concentration because he is hearing it for the 1st time, just like you & he is blown away. Her guitarist in Norway when she was younger (8-12), Egil Clausen, said he did the same thing. After visiting with her family & having a nice meal, they would go to what she calls her "Music Corner" and knock out a masterpiece in 1 take, 2 if the guitarist messed up because she never did. I prefer this over Rihanna's original & how much money do you think her record label spent on her version?

No, it’s not crazy at all. Angelina, with Ivan’s guitar, a mic, and no production whatsoever, gives us-at 12 years old-the best version of that song we’ve ever heard. It’s time for you to stop wondering why you find her versions better than the originals. It’s because Angelina is the best singer we’ve ever heard-and she can do that across multiple genres. You said you shouldn’t try to listen when you’re going through some things in your life. No-that’s exactly when to listen to Angelina. She can calm and inspire us at the same time. No analysis needed-just let her voice flow over you.

I have heard this 100s of times and I am still in awe every time.
It is not a question of who is better, Angelina just emits more emotion than anyone else.
If you watch closely, she feels the music with her entire body.

first here - this is arguably one of her best early Covers - a random Performance with a friend filmed by Handy - in my book a lot more feeling than the polished Rihanna Original from Studio - just jawdropping

I don't think it's important to state that someone sings a song better . It's not a sports contest. But of course one can prefer a version. I don't think Rihanna or Adele fans for instance will prefer Angelina's covers of their songs over hers. But that's ok. In my case I acknowledge that Rihanna has a good singing voice and she knows how to use 'her image'. But somehow, following the journey of Angelina, discovering her unique artistry and getting hooked on her more than special voice, she sounds more interesting than any female singer. And what she did with Stay at such a young age is simply beautiful and out of this world.
Yes one can say that one version is better than an other one . But only when you compare a genius to a standardise singer. Taste comes after . Still one can prefer Rihanna ! In one hand you have a product shape to please a maximum of consumers and in the other hand a true creation a true authentic genius. Yes one is better than the other .I love to do paintings but sorry for me Rembrandt is much, much better than me .And yet, taste some times goes my way! (rarely don't worry 😂😂😂😂 )
Ivan said in an interview that he would sometimes forget to play in the middle of the song because he would get he get mesmerized by the beauty of her voice.

The way she uses her graceful hands to feel and help interpret the song has always intrigued me. It's beautiful and fascinating to watch. It's as if her hands have a "sign language" all their own! The first time I ever caught notice of them, and the way they were synced to her voice and the music, was when she did "Feeling Good" at age 10 during the indoor live TV stage performance. It was almost like she was casting a spell on the audience and me (which she did in my case)! It's fascinating, too, that when you look at the root etymological meaning of her full name, Angelina Jordan Astar, it literally means "an angel [Angelina} descending [Jordan, as in the "Jordan" River descending from Mt. Hermon to the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea] from the stars [Astar]." To which I say, yes, indeed!
It's incredible how a young 12-year old girl could interpret this song and give it an emotional take that it deserves. It was my number one Angelina's performance for a very long time. This is the song that leads me to believe Angelina has the best vibrato in this business. none equal.

The Guitarist, Ivan Mendez, said in an interview that playing alongside Angelina was a once-in-a-lifetime experience he would never forget. Working with her, it was hard for him to concentrate on his part listening to her sing, and he would lose himself in her voice. What a lucky Guy!
Yes, Angelina raw and in the moment. This was an early recording from LA, Angelina reading the lyrics from the ipad on her left, stumbling slightly with unfamiliar phrases. Ivan, struggling to hold it together, overwhelmed by Angelina's voice, especially at the end. Angelina has a way of drawing us in making us feel the song, true artistry...
Whenever Ivan plays for her you can see the joy and awe in his facial expressions. He seriously enjoys accompanying her.

For years this has been my number one cover,not only by Angelina,but by anybody and in comments where people has said that a cover must be the most beautiful cover,I have always said,just listen to Angelina's cover of Stay,and I think you will think different, because nearly always but especially in this song she hit you not only in your ears,you feel it with your whole body,and your soul like nobody has ever done with a song,at least to me .The last years she has come out with many amazing songs,both covers and originals,but for me at least this song Stay by her is still number one.
@@frankjohansen9364 I always hesitate to claim any of her covers or originals is my absolute favorite because she's so consistently, compellingly outstanding, but I certainly know what you mean, Frank. I have mentioned in other comments that this is one cover I sort of hope she never touches again. Intellectually, I know that she has done several versions of certain songs over the years and her subsequent performances often turn out better because her voice has matured and her skills have improved. But there's just something ineffable, ethereal, elusive and emotional going on in this one that's kind like lightening in a bottle for me. Cheers. 😇
There is not one single bad performance from Angelina.
It’s not just a real performance, it’s practice, and once you watch more of her you will realize that when she does live performances she is off the charts, amazing even the musicians she plays with.
We're all crazy. She's almost a religion at this point. And good. There is no such thing as too many reasons to do better for something or someone. Poor Ivan on the guitar, surprised he even played through that, the amount of drugs you'd need to travel that far.

Yeah I didn't really mean that joke, at least not without way more context, and I didn't mean anything by almost anyway. It's even her money obviously. But I add those disclaimers only now as not to muddle the joke. I mean no offence to anyone other than mega churches and millionaire preachers, swindling their followers, and it was only the funniest thing to come quickly to mind. The church right next to me does what it can, more than me.
In an interview, the guitarist, Ivan Mendez said that most of these songs that he did with Angelina were impromptu, with almost no preparation or rehearsal and just one or two takes. Some of the songs he didn't even know, and learned just minutes before the performance. He also sometimes got a bit distracted just listening to her sing. His facial expressions are eloquent testimony to the otherworldly beauty of her voice and her singing: he looks like he is having an out-of-body experience and is transported to another plane of existence. So forgive him for the odd lapse😊.

Check out Angelina's version of "Suspicious Minds." The video is great too. Angelina always shows respect to the original artists. The nod to Elvis with the leather suit and boots and her nod to Priscilla with the beehive is really cool as well. Some people think Amy Winehouse. Which I believe Angelina has worn a behave as a nod to Amy as well. But in this video, I believe it's all Elvis and Priscilla. Way to go, Angelina.

Sebs, this particular video is one a lot of people first discovered Angelina. For those of us who have gotten to know her, we are startled when we listen to her sing this version of 'Stay'. For those who discovered her for the first time they were more than startled. They were in absolute shock. Without being able to think straight they were still able to understand they just listened to greatness. Greatness blanketed with tones of soulfulness that brought tears to their eyes. They asked themselves, "What just happened? What? Who is she? What?", and so forth.
Sebs, many of us older folks who have been around the block a few times all agree we have never heard anyone sing like Angelina, past or present, in our lifetimes. Incredible statement? Of course, but when we combine what she sounds like AND we understand who she is as a wonderful human being and with a loving soul we know what we are hearing when she sings is words and sounds of love which touch our hearts. Pardon the expression but is she a "flash in the pan"? To the contrary, once she touches someone's heart she is there to stay and will never leave that person.
Sebs, there will be a day not too far down the road when everyone in the world will know who Angelina Jordan is. EVERYONE.

You don't need to critique .. just react. You're a great reactor. By the way .. it doesn't matter what you think about the guitar .. ALL is called by Angelina. She says what Ivan does. If you haven't seen the interview with Ivan it is worth seeing .. he talks about what it was like when he was her guitarist and he spoke about the family and the immediateness of playing once they decided on a song. Amazing. But do remember that no matter what, Angelina knows what she wants and that's what happens. I happen to love the guitar on this .. but we are all different. I really liked everything else you had to say .. thanks .. and thanks for acknowledging the effect she has on you. Right up to the last “stay” I am mesmerized. It is true, most of her covers are better than the originals. It is almost as if you are hearing the lyrics for the first time. They are hidden away, covered up, until Angelina presents them to us. 🌺

The most stunningly beautiful version of this song.
Ivan said that he would just go over (I think he was a grad student doing a side gig) and hang with the family most of the day and then she would sometimes teach him the song right before they recorded it. He is sometimes criticized for mistakes, but I always liked him.

Rhianna may be a billionaire with over 100 million album sales to her credit, but there is
no way her original can match the emotion laden penetration of Angelina's rendition.
Rhianna is great, but she's a non-jazz singer and when it comes to heartfelt ballads,
Angelina being a true jazz singer, can't be matched. She's in a class of her own.
What makes Rihanna’s relatively emotionless monotonous version so popular then. Is there some secret ingredient and will AJ have to adopt it too? Is it that the American market demands a ‘show’?And does the jazz club circuit still thrive?
@@pa1189j I love Angelina but have the same reservations as you. IMO, because of years of no or very little talent being the money makers for the industry, has the ears of the listening public become numb to hearing real music? I think it started with Madonna and continued through Brittany Spears and now Taylor Swift with Christina Aguilera being the only real talent but choosing the money route. Overproduction in the studio, dancers and sexualized live performances, can Angelina's peers in mass even recognize all the things her fans hear so clearly and easily. It seems like Angelina's fans are of a mature age. I believe that's because we were exposed to great singers, songwriters and bands who came from many labels trying to make money and couldn't afford to overproduce their talent. I would love to hear an album of jazz, blues and soul standards from Angelina. It wouldn't make her rich but it could be historic. Lord knows we don't need another pop princess.

super talented singer like Rhianna presented it, everyone had to be impressed.
However, Angelina's cover of it hadn't been done yet. To better illustrate the
difference between non-jazz singers and actual jazz singers when it comes to
heartfelt ballads, and not just this one but those by another iconic singer, that
being Adele, who also is great but, again, not a jazz singer, expert vocal analyst
Andreas Grussl constructed a You Tube video where he compares, section by
section of Adele's song 'Easy On Me', comparing it to Angelina's rendition. He
explains why found Angelina's cover has more of the emotional warmth emitted
than Adele, for he, like I, are penetrated more deeply by her jazz style of singing
it. Two singers of jazz who totally redefined the genre were Billie Holiday, who
inserted ' breathy', 'whisper-like' inflections when she sang heartfelt ballads, and
Amy Winehouse who applied radical mid-sentence 'key' changes and 'slurring' of
words to deliver a more intense effect when she sang them. Angelina has adopted
both of these artists unique components, which she weaves into her own vocal
style and the result is intricately more complex, for the listener gets to hear what
sounds like the vocals of multiple 'master' singers. Add to this her ability to emulate
Adele's actual vocal sound, as well as that of many other A-List artists, due to her
being a true 'vocal chameleon', just enhances her representations of songs whenever she wants to apply this unique musical talent to them.

The second you see her, you KNOW she's about to KILL THIS!! And this is like the Whitney tribute, right? This is "A Rihanna" song!! It's like covering Amy Whinehouse Back to Black. It's a major flex to cover this. I thing she owns it!! Have you ever heard a better version?? There's just a quality in her that no one can come close to.
Whew! This one of hers gives me chills. She is at her best with just that guitar. No orchestra required or even needed.
