Yeah even Ward never abandoned any of his kids to an abusive dad. Imagine Rafe being raised by Luke instead of JJ? Ward did try to kill sara but it was only once. This guy had already tried to kill JJ. That's proof he didn't love his kid but in the flashback he didn't really seem to like being a father. The mom the one who actually seemed to love her son. I'm sure she would have been anger with both Luke and her husband. I guess JJ thought his dad trying to kill him was a one time thing and wouldn't try to kill him again. Maybe a part of him was hoping his dad loved him and might even share the wealth. How I see if your parent abandoned you then you probably shouldn't trust them especially if they give you to an abusive person.

There have been signs that one of the Pogues will die since S1, and a lot of the times, it was JJ's character that gave this feeling that he will die, it was just a matter of when. Now, of course, if the writers do decide to undo this due to the backlash, there are a few ways they could do this without a magical/supernatural element: - One option: Show that everything that happened from when the Pogues found Groff in the well till the end, was a "what if" scenario in one of the Pogue's heads - maybe JJ's or John B's - first ep of S5 rewinds back to that scene with John B's voiceover saying something about it and the Pogues do things differently and end up with a different outcome (not JJ or any of them dying). - 2nd option: They showed a faraway shot of "JJ's burial" - never showed them actually putting his body into the grave. They could do a dramatic reveal that JJ did not actually die, that they were burying something else (I dunno, maybe Lightner's body or something) and maybe JJ's just severely injured, in a coma or something, and they had to take him somewhere safe where someone could heal/look after him (like what happened with Big John), hence why at the end with the fire scene, they're talking about JJ as if he's not here but not because he's dead, but because he's still on the brink of dying and Groff was the cause, so they want revenge for everything Groff has done to JJ and them. Just some ideas that could work if the writers were willing.
