- Finnish knifemaker Pekka Tuominen once said "Every puukko is a knife, but every knife is not a puukko."
www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco...
A historically traditional Finnish fixed blade, the Puukko was developed for life in a forested, outdoor environment where woodworking, hunting and fishing are daily chores.
Traditionally, a Puukko has a blade with a single curving cutting edge and a flat level spine with a rounded wood handle. The level blade spine and lack of choil allow positioning the thumb directly on the spine concentrating force and leverage where it's needed most when cutting. Used for cutting as opposed to piercing or stabbing, Puukkos have no cross-guard or expanded pommel keeping the hand away from the blade giving the knife its uid and esthetically-balanced appearance. Puukko sheaths are considered an equal component to the knife, designed to protect the blade and its' owner. The Spyderco Puukko carries in a fitted-leather belt sheath that pivots, moving with the body whether standing or sitting. Pekka's Puukko infuses equal parts artistic expression and tool while Spyderco's kicks in a high-tech influence.

This is for the Taiwan man who moved to America won the Lottery and now wants to go home and relive his culture, or a rich collector. The people who originally used these knives did not buy them at outrageous prices and hoard them away. I think its stupid to make quality knives that people could use and then jack up the price so that only the collector can "afford" to buy.
I know im super late, but they can be pretty expensive, and always have been. Obviously cheap working class blades too, but there is in finland even term for essentially rich mans jewelry knife. Obviously if you have ot of money you might want to show off with your knife too, and even the traditional belt to hold the knife in sort of knife capitol region of finland is full of bling. This is modelled after tommi knives, and you can get real tommi here from small hand forging smithy about same money. So for production knife made in Taiwan this is very expensive, but its pretty much impossible to find production knife made like this type grind in Finland, and i kinda can see why the cost from Spyderco
I like your reviews about knifes. Keep up the good work !
gorgeous knife!
That handle wood must be pretty expensive
I assume the bolster is 24k gold?
good beater for throwing in the tackle box lol
Hell yeah son. I scrape paint and rust off old tractors on my farm as well with mine. It is just a cheap piece of shit so I don't mind.
Finland and Scandinavia have nothing to with another ! Puukko is a finnish word and it is only known in Finland.
Do you still have this knife with the Ironwood Handles, and please e-mail me the price on the knife please, the only Puukku Knife that I have is the Cold Steel SISU I don't think they make it anymore, but recently because I alway's wanted to buy a Leuku it's a Traditional Saame Kniv I thought this Spyderco would be a nice pair.

Since you missed my birthday , I am willing to accept that knife as a late gift.....lol...( seriously though, thats a nice knife ) thanks for sharing..Rich
You could buy 15, great quality, mora knives for the price of this one... I'm really wondering where all the cost was on this one, considering it was made overseas
i would really love a hard sheath
What’s the price
full tang?
Here in finland its like a EDC knife you know its not only a fishing knife
What's the point in paying 300 euros for a simple puukko? You can get a handcrafted one with engravings for that price. Even damascus blades go for less if you are willing to craft the handle yourself.
New bushcrafter
the puukko is still the edc knife for hunters and woodsmen in scandinavia
Putting the hole right through the spine that runs through this particular knife's blade cross section borders on MORONIC... I love Pekka's design, and I do not mind it being made in the Taiwan factory.... However a 100 dollar price point and no hole would have made this one a home run..... as it is I do not see many getting this one.. and that is too bad really because these zero grind Tommi knives are super cutting performers... A better price point would have made them more money in the end... If you learn anything from Benchmades business model its that greed will eventually cost you your customer base .
rainmechanic I'm with you there. Spyderco isn't endearing themselves with me when they have these high dollar blades that are made in Taiwan. I can get a real one from Finland for much cheaper than this.
i love puukkos... i didnt know spyderco made scandi blades.
Mora?
As a finn, I think theres no point in buying a Spyderco clone-puukko for 220 $, when you can buy a real handmade in Finland puukko for about 100€(=about 130 $).
If that was a reply it is 4116 k the German stainless not aus8 Japanese.
I would take a good stainless blade at 56-57hrc over a brittle Carbon steel anyday of the week.
The plastic handle with serrations is also better than a wood handle on a gaurd free knife.
I have a 440c folder over 30yrs old that still takes a razor edge.
Price never has and never will dictate quality.
No its for the finnish people like me. We got forest everywhere here in finland so it might be handy
I see the unusual beauty in this blade.Others may not. May the Father of Understanding guide Me.
heavy grind lines on that one
oh yeah i got a knife made by that guy. or at least it looks similar, bought it in finland a while ago
In finland. Other scandinavian countries have their own names for Puukko
A Spyderco made in Taiwan, designed by Pakka Tuominen. It looks nice but the Price is way too high ! I prefer to make one myself !
wow Cold Steel must be guffawing right now, ever heard of the finn bear it goes for under $30...
Why would you get this when you can get a similar bark river knife for cheaper!!!
well i wouldnt know about that since im swedish...
i bet you they werent 230 bones back in the day
This one is obviously for the collectors.
222$ and its made in taiwan i guess it was labor that drove the price up
222 for a production blade? That's pretty funny.
Its Pekka
Finnish knifes Puukko is a finnish word
yes, it is, i now see it .. sorry for that.. :-)
I can buy a ton of mora's for $220.00.
And at $15 a pop I will not be afraid to use them!
If you're going to get a expensive Finnish knife, here's a wild idea, just going out on a limb here...get one made in Finland. You can't get a traditional knife that's not made in the country of origin. It's a contradiction in terms. It's like getting a katana that's made in China or a Laguoile that's not made in France. If you're going to get a cheap outsourced knife get a high quality one made of modern materials.
Ugly? This knife is beautiful.
butbutbut...It's a spyderco man!
That knife isn't worth 230 dollars imo.. It's nice looking but I couldn't justify paying 230 for it.. 130 maybe but definatly not 230
You can get a Puukko for about 35 bucks
220 bucks for that, wow, did spyderco forget that these are made in Taiwan!!!???
hi :D
Well hello neighbour
Who would spend that money on this knife with limited uses? There is a reason knife design has changed so much from the original Finnish designs of hundreds of years ago..yeah its great steel, but for that money why not go buy a much more usable knife?
Too expensive.... The hole is just stupid on a knife like this....might buy it if it had no hole...
they are a part of Scandinavia.. the Finns just don't want to admit it due to identity crisys after beeing a part of Sweden for seven centuries xD and Puukko is widely used in the rest of Scandinavia too. But it is correct that the tree original kingdoms are Denmark, Sweden and Norway
Well geographically Finland indeed is not part of scandinavia. Only small part of northern most region is actually in scandinavia so technically for most of finland its like saying estonia is in scandinavia. Its not really identity crisis, but more like bit annoying finland gets lumped together with norway, sweden, and denmark even though we are not even just liguistically or culturally really scandinavian either, but closer to estonia. Obviously 700 years of occupation we took lot of cultural, and genetical heritage from there, but same time eastern finns were more close to Russia, and mixed cultures with them too, and that does not make them russian.
Thats ok ill take my cold steel finn bear instead!
heheheh dangler hehehe
quality for economical price: marttiini fi and real deal (expensive) with really long waiting time puukkopekka com
2nd!
So so SO ugly,Yet so so so functional.
This has got too be a joke! I've got real Sami knives for a quarter of the price! Taiwan puukko Ha Ha Ha!!!!!
+Philip Lobrano Glad I'm not the only one who gets the humor in it. This is more expensive than most popular production scandinavian puukkos
My Paaso only cost me 74 eur, but on their website the MSRP is 55eur, but it did have to be imported from Finland. As somebody who thinks it's wkrth paying that little bit more for quality, i'd never buy this knife, high carbide steel which'll chip in a single bevel scandi (and puukkos are supposed to be made with carbon) ironwood handle (again, not traditional) and the sheath which is an english/scandi bushcraft sheath, puukko sheathes are stitched at the back and the lower half is made from curly birch
Finns are not part of the scandinavian
