Topstitching isn't just decorative, it also adds a great deal of strength to seams which is why it is very common on historically manual-worker clothing styles like jeans, work shirts, etc.
Thank you SO MUCH for all the tips for top stitching. I have a pair of expensive store bought linen shorts with a double row of top stitching, that I had not worn because they were too long. I watched your video 2 days ago and I have applied just about all the tips and techniques that you demonstrated. Even though I have been a sewer all my life (more than 40 years) I learn so many useful tips by watching your videos. Please keep them coming! I would really like some tips on how to manage thicker fabrics and/or multiple layers. It really gives me anxiety when my machine refuses to keep sewing or I think the needle may break I do use denim needles, trim seams etc but at times, it is still a challenge!!! Thanks again.
Thanks once again for super helpful tips. I didn’t know about only using the top stitch thread on the spool not bobbin 🙏🏻 and not to use the machine threader either . I love your tips and am converted to your invisible zip trick with a haemostat👍🏻 use it all the time.
Thank you! I am currently sewing the Itch to Stitch Taroko skirt in denim, and have challenges with my machine feeding thick fabric through it (on uneven buttonholes portion and the belt loop bar tacks). I found your tips to be invaluable for the waistband and all the other topstitching I have done. Thank you for producing excellent videos each week! I love your coat!
Thank you so much, yes those areas can be very tricky, but I'm so glad my tips helped. There is pretty much always a way to overcome these things, it's just a matter of having options and ideas and that's what I love to try and provide for you all. Well done for conquering your skirt, it sounds great.
Brilliant video Lucy, thanks! Other suggestions are top stitching foot and a double eye needle so you could get two tone top stitching without having to buy expensive variegated thread. ❤
I can't believe I forgot to mention a top stitching foot! Silly me! Thank you so much for the reminder Sue and love the idea about the double eye needle - clever!
Topstitching is definitely a skill I’m still developing! Highly appreciate all these tips! I tried to use topstitching thread once and it was such a disaster that I haven’t tried it since 😅 Definitely trying it again now!
Yay go Anouchka you are developing so many sewing skills with all the different things you are trying, it's awesome to hear about your sewing adventures
Hi Susan, it's a pleasure, sadly the jacket was a purchase from Vinted, but I think this pattern is quite similar and is half price in the McCalls sale on our site atm: www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-jacket-skirt-mccalls-pattern-8370
Thank you for another very useful set of tips. Please could you let me know what pattern you used for the zipper jacket you are wearing too. Many thanks!
I also like using the denim thread for topstitching. My machine seems to prefer this to topstitching thread. Lucy- I love your jacket. Is it one you have made?
Any tips for hemming skinny jeans? The chainstitch on the coverstitch machine looks great but always loosens off with time. 😢 Would wooly nylon thread in the needle on a sewing machine achieve the stretch needed for a hem with a single row of stitches? Thank you
Why isn't there a double needle for topstitching on woven fabrics? I've just purchased a cover stitch machine , I'm hoping it will help me with top stitching

Thank you for the extra info, you are quite right I never thought about that!

Thanks, very helpful❤
I am 77 years old and have never needed to adjust my bobbin tension. Too much is made of it nowadays - I agree with you hon, leave it alone! X x x
Just what I needed, problem solved! Thank you.

Thank you so much, see above comment, sadly I didn't make it, but I have shared a similar pattern and it is 50% off in our sale currently
A surgeons knot should secure it better, you tube can show you one.

What do you think of twin needles for topstitching?
You would want to research whether or not the twin needles come as a top stitch. Most people will have a cover stitch machine for that effect.
@dcwatashi thank you
“Unpick” definitely the wrong term. You can’t unpick something. Proper term is seam ripping because that’s exactly what you are doing.
