  • In today's video, I feed my new lawn for the first time!
    What you might find strange is there doesn't seem to be much of a lawn, but if you look closely... there is!
    It's time now to give the new seedlings the support they need so that they can mature into an mature plant in no time.

    It's inspiring to witness the transformation from seemingly sparse beginnings to the promise of a flourishing lawn with proper care and attention.

      I was very much on the fence about it about a month ago, but I'm fully sold on it now. I know only time will tell, but if it can be what it promises to be, it will look quality.
      If I hadn't have had the issues that I've had with rye over the past couple of years, I wouldn't have bothered, but it would be mad to continue doing what has already failed twice.

    Be patient with it. It will come through and once it does cut it regular and it will thicken quickly and will largely takes care of itself. You’ll notice a big difference over winter where it doesn’t die back like rye.

      Watching it survive through winter is what I'm looking forward to most! 😅
      The advice I've had is to feed it quite often over the next few months. Will be interesting to see how it comes along. I'll keep up with regular updates so everyone can see what it's like on a week by week basis.

    Congratulations. Mine finally germinated on day16. Will be interested to see how quickly yours grows, I get the sense bent/fescue is much slower than ryegrass. Now 5 days since germination and mine is still only 2/3mms. Annoying as I overseeded the other grass could do with a cut but will wait another week. So much poa has come up though the challenge never ends.

      I've got a few seed pots on the go at the moment and rye is flying much faster that the bent/fescue. Less vertical growth, more lateral it seems.
      And I know what you mean about poa. It's come out of nowhere on my front lawn today! Looks like I'll be out with the fork tomorrow!

    All and all maybe a bit more early than needed, but I have noticed that bentgrass in early staged requires more feed than others. This year I have done a test with all sorts of species in 1 big bin and Rye and others take off easily without any additional feed than was in the soil; Bent was the one that stayed short and was turning yellow the first. After a simple dose of fert it greened up nicely and started to get longer and wider leafs.

    • @NoviceGardener

      The advice I've had from the Lawn Association is to feed it quite a lot over the next few months (and the first feeds needs to be as soon as the seed germinates). It's all about giving it the best start and getting it established well.
      Rye seems to germinate so much faster. Lots of vertical growth!

      @Arietje Месяц назад

      @@NoviceGardener I see, maybe because its a more organic feed it can be applied sooner rather than later as it may need some time to breakdown, as opposed to a raw ammonium or urea or something. Well, seems good!

    Interesting what you said about the amount of blades germinating. I seeded mine two weeks ago from today and have never seeded from scratch. When I seeded pure fescue it looked sparse in comparison and thats just with 10% bent
    I may have overdone it on the communal lawn though lol. The drop spreader somehow spread the seeds much faster and I had to use double the amount to about 75g / m2. Just over 2.2 kg for around 30 m2. It's an overseed to outcompete ugly rye and poa. Thats close to the high end (70g / m2) on a new lawn seeding rate for an overseed to try and change the grass species .

    • @Arietje
      @Arietje Месяц назад +1

      Bent can be very easily seeded to heavy, I think when I'm going to try a full bent patch I will mix it with sand beforehand. I think almost no grass type is able to truly outcompete Poa Annua, except maybe for Poa Supina (which is 1 of 2 the parent species of Poa Annua), however that lawn requires extreme water & fert; I would say the opposite of the bent/fescue mix and the philosophy behind it. Having said that, a bent/fescue mix will give you a better chance than Rye obviously.

    • @stevenbelcher5658
      @stevenbelcher5658 Месяц назад

      @@Arietje Its tricky to spread evenly. spreading the edges and spaces the drop spreader wont go by hand results in the bent falling to the bottom and coming out all at once at the end . I had pure fescue before and that kept poa out. As long as you can see the soil then poa should struggle spread.

    • @Arietje
      @Arietje Месяц назад

      @@stevenbelcher5658 I see, yes a full fescue can battle Poa Annua from another angle as well, fescue requires little water & fert, something Poa A. will like (just as Poa Supina). Not sure about bent yet from that aspect, since I think bent requires more fert than fescue.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Месяц назад +2

      Compared with when I've seeded with rye in the past - I'd say there is about 4 times the amount of plants! I'll try and cut together a few clips in my next video to show the germination rate last year with rye compared to this year with bent/fescue.

    Much like some of the comments below. Invest in a cylinder mover (even if push one), anything that mean you can keep it lower than a rotary mower can dropped to setting 1, you can always rotary and then push along is easy. Then figure a way to verticut it regularly.
    Else, if budget can afford buy an old Atco as Allet is exactly the same machine (they brought their designs, eg Atco Balmoral is the Allet Kensington) and the verticutter slots right in.

    Your drop spreader look a far cleaner application, the wee red spreader looked like you were walking in a cloud of fertiliser . Oh and how's the new French drain doing, your garden certainly looks much dryer, even your patio doesn't have that left over green swampy look

      Little and often is key. I water this for no more than 1 minute. No sprinkler, just with the fine mist setting on the hose. Don't need to water deeply because you only want the seeds to absorb any of the moisture. You'll be out there a lot if the temps stay the same, but it will germinate in no time!

      Mind me asking what you use to do the verticutting mate? I want to do the same, but it's £400 for a verticutter cartridge for the allet Kensington and so I was wondering if there's a better/cheaper option.

      @@martinlogan8329 If you are fanatical like me caring for your lawns is never cheap. I have a Atco (Allet) with the scarifier and verticutter attachment. But I bought a Sthil RL 450 last year. But one of the best machines I have a a couple of Ransomes Certes push cylinder mowers (10 blades). They are old 1950"s greens mowers, back in the day they used to use them to cut the grass at Wimbledon. In the summer my lawns get cut every day, not massive lawns 50 square meters each. Excellent way to thicken up Bent/Fescue lawns.

      @@geoffreyedmundson9928 mate if you lived round tunbridge Wells I'd happily buy you a beer and pick your brains on it all... I'm very like minded! Was looking in to those old manual push mowers like the certes and also the zephyr and Webb witch (8 blade). Think the certes and zephyr are really hard to get hold of? But those in the know seem to rave about them, so I was keeping an eye out.
      My lawns are 30 and 60sqm... so basically in the same boat as you. I had a Webb manual push mower a couple of years back but found it hard to get the setup right and that it missed a lot of blades of grass while cutting, so I got rid of it. But I still love tje concept of being able to grab it quickly and just give a quick mow after work each day.
      On the verticutting though, what I'm wondering is, basically everyone has a scarifier but virtually no one talks about tje benefits of having an actual verticutter, a true verticutter like you can get on an allet. Most people talk about verticutting but use a scarifier to do so. And tbh, none of the shows on RUclips really go in to verticutting. So do you just use a scarifier to do it? And does it work to thicken up the lawn? Because I find when I use my scarifier to verticut it basically does more damage than good, if you know what I mean.

      @geoffreyedmundson9928 Месяц назад

      @@martinlogan8329 You will find when your bent/fescue starts to thicken up and because of the way it grows (lateral) it will benefit greatly from the vertical cutting. It might look a mess the first week or so but if you look closely you will see all of the new shoots growing which in turn promotes a thicker lawn. You will find it becomes addictive a labour of love.

      @martinlogan8329 Месяц назад

      @@geoffreyedmundson9928 thanks for taking the time to reply mate. The scarifier I have is just a electric plug in from aldi, quite thick blades on the scarifier cartridge, and they have sort of bumpy rounded edges rather than having sharp right angles. So when you use it, it's pretty rough, I'm not sure how much it is cutting, seems to be a very blunt instrument to be cutting.... do you think I should go ahead with the allet verticutter cartridge (which looks more like lots of sharp ninja stars) for £400 or is there a cheaper alternative you'd recommend?
