You don't have to be an olympic swimmer to have swam competitively in highschool or college. Same fundamentals apply, in increasing your speed, only difference is you grow bigger and perhaps get better training and coaches.
I think this is more of beginner swimmer or swimmers that just started competitive swimming, dropping 20sec /100m s practically impossible for anyone who has been training daily for a few years
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to break 30 minutes for a mile for ages without success. Having followed your tips did it in 29:30 yesterday. Just a recreational swimmer, never had a lesson. Really helpful tips. I'll now watch your other videos to see if I can get it down further.
me during practice: does stroke slowly to try and do it like in this video coach: stop pausing! me: IM THINKING coach: about what you know how to swim -.-
For me the tip about starting the pull on the catch too early which makes you push down on the water and not back is a game changer for me. Fantastic work...
"She's done a lot of training and been very consistent. So all these changes don't come without the hard work and the consistent, regular swimming involved as well." (At the end of the video). Thanks for pointing that out.
Thanks for the video. Been getting into the pool only once a week - usually do a 4 x 500m set. Average around 10:30 mins for the first few sets then drop to around 10:45 mins for the last one as I'm getting tired then. Went to the pool today to do the same set but really tried hard to focus on doing the stroke according to this video and correcting my mistakes. Wasn't really concerned about speed, just getting the technique right. Averaged around the 10:00mins for each set with the last one being 10:10mins :) Really helpful tips and going to watch the other videos now. Would love to get to 1:40s/100m...
It's cool that a couple tweaks plus faster stroke rate got my mile down to 24 minutes--which is good for this 52 year old. Thanks again. Great tutorials.
this makes the biggest difference in the world! Right!

It's all about REDUCING drag and aren't we INCREASING the drag when our arm enters the water with a downwards angle (fingers under wrist - wrist under elbow)??? Am I missing something?! 01:49
Sürüşlerin Efendisi i think it’s about catching more water (& sooner) therefore pushing oneself farther with each stroke. for beginner swimmers, i’ve noticed that a lot tend to kind of slap their arms into the water without thinking, instead of trying to catch more water and getting a stronger pull. if they were to adjust their stroke like shown in the video, they’d probably drop a lot of time!
Yes, but only if you leave it there and fail to pull back. Don't pause with it there. As long as you are pulling back faster than your body is moving forward, your arm will be creating propulsion and not drag.
I averaged around a 1:00/100y (75% effort) pace back in high school. I had a 1:20/100y pace when I got back into swimming 3 months ago, now I am back to the 1:00 pace! This video is legit.
Fantastic video, watched it tried the angled hand during pull and helped straight away. I have a damaged knee so tend to use my legs more to balance me and focus on arms. Do you have any tips for swimmers with leg injuries.
I mean... I have a 1:20 100y and I hope I can get maybe a 1:10. I have a really bad dive though. I'll work on the dive and maybe get a 1:15 and then apply this to get a 1:05. This may work somewhat for a young only summer swimmer. I want to do winter but nowhere close does all year around.
I am not a champion, but i think the way arms behave out of water is not correct elbows must be higher and hands close to the water almost toutching it. Thanks for the clip
I learned how to swim when I was 11.. and I started competitive swim last year, but I only went to one meet because my anxiety was dragging me away from confidence because my times are bad.. like I try to swim faster.. yet i get exhausted.. for example my time for my 50 free is 42 seconds (I know it's super bad).. but anyways any tips on how to keep a constant speed without your legs giving out or at the end feeling like you are being suffocated? Because I really do want to get over my fears and compete this year..
Freestyle sprinting is really hard!and for your experience your time is great! I've been swimming for almost 9 years now and it honestly just takes practice. I like to do 10x25's flutter kick all out in the 0:30 to allow for minimal rest, this might help to bring up your pacing and your endurance and you can adjust your interval as needed. It also might be good to take a look at how you're breathing and focus on that during practice. The tired feeling after the 50 feels gross but is natural after you go all out for that long! Good luck!
Here's just 1 out of 100 tips......just look at your self swimming in 3rd person when u swim ....or just close your eyes and swim and feel yourself flowing with the water while you swim....it helps with what you're mistaking on......
Thanks, this is quite good and mostly clear. The only problem was the early sections when you're talking about arm angle it's not always clear if we're watching before or after and I think the focus of the frame could be closer to the arm to make it easier to see. Otherwise thanks very much, very good video, you've got a new subscriber :-)
Jerry is a great coach. Everyone is different in terms of how much they should kick. She's going at about 400m pace in this video and wouldn't kick this hard in a half IM. Plus with a wetsuit on most people will kick less
Her stroke cycle is also high. What exercises do we on land to ensure that we tire less in the water. I understand that technique plays a big part but you have to be strong also. But I know there are specific workouts to specific groups of muscles. Can anyone help
I think specific conditioning is the most important thing, whatever you want to be good at, make the muscles used in that action strong, which comes about through doing that action over and over again over a long period of time. See, I'm an expert. I'd also suggest to train shorter distances at faster pace with good form, rather than longer distances at slower pace and sloppy (lazy) form. I learnt that from cycling, perhaps it applies to swimming too.
How did we get all of the prior olympic 100m freestyle competitors to comment on a video with 854k views? The statistics of that are unreal! There are like 1,000 people on this thread that have swam faster than Mark Spitz did in 1972 at the olympics, setting the then WR. This is awesome. I feel excited knowing how many sub 50 second per 100m are actually clicking on a video titled "How To Swim 20 Seconds Faster (Per 100m)". Great use of your time to all of you WR holders!
The first part was not clearly explained. How to extend you hand underwater ? Do I let my finger tips touch the top of the water or deeper inside the water ? This part is not clear
I do 50 x 25m pool lengths in 26min 10sec, the touch turns do me and slow me down more than my technique (intermediate) I’d say. I’ll need to focus on faster turnaround to get quicker.
I was told that when your hand enters the water during a stroke, that you should move it in front of your face and down the center of your torso, because it creates more propulsion through the water, is that BS?
This video is so helpful because I really need to qualify for a gala but my times are within the second out of the qualifing time. This video is so helpful thanks 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😃😃😃😀😀😀😊😊😊😉☺😊😀😀😺😸😺
kicking on your front with your arms in front of you, try to feel the water going over your hands. Fingers should be at armpit depth. Then try the same thing while kicking on your side with one arm in front and the other by your side. You might need to aim a lot deeper than is comfortable to change it.
I’m here because I challenged a D1 swimmer to a race.... wish me luck! Her brother is an Olympian, if I miraculously beat her I’m challenging him next!😂
Boys after I watch this video I will have the world record
I will be 10 seconds under the actual world record, cant wait to try it in my next meet
Same watchout
Same, ill swim at 38.2
Mee too, olympic medals are mine
I would be 38.0 which would give me the yards world record in long course meters
I like how all the people in the comments are olympic swimmers
You don't have to be an olympic swimmer to have swam competitively in highschool or college. Same fundamentals apply, in increasing your speed, only difference is you grow bigger and perhaps get better training and coaches.
Im just a random competetive swimmer oh well.
I literally can't swim because I don't like water lmao; sucks to suck :(
Thanks
Oof i aint a olympic swimmer, im just a state swimmer :")
*pro tip* apply the advice twice to be 40 sec faster !
big brain time
holy shit
😂😂
holy crap, that's an insane amount of improvement in only 9 months! goes to show you how important technique is in swimming.
I think this is more of beginner swimmer or swimmers that just started competitive swimming, dropping 20sec /100m s practically impossible for anyone who has been training daily for a few years
Yeah, i watched it just to be sure but this is not gonna help me after all
I thought the same thing, but in the comments, he's talking about a race pace in 1900m swim.
Yes true
@@ryanwilder4121 Still not possible,
take me for example on 100m I swim 57,5s on 1500 an average of 1:13,2s/100m...
I think you get my point
joesr31 most swimmers who trained daily for a few year cant really improve anything but just exercising : D reality hits u hard bro.
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to break 30 minutes for a mile for ages without success. Having followed your tips did it in 29:30 yesterday. Just a recreational swimmer, never had a lesson. Really helpful tips. I'll now watch your other videos to see if I can get it down further.
great work Russ!
I'M SO PROUD OF THE PEOPLE COMMENTING THEIR ACTUAL SPEED AND THEN THE SPEED MINUS 20 SECONDS!! I'M SO PROUD OF YOUR MATH SKILLS!!!!!
My 9yr old is 1:38/100m, she is coaching me to bring my 2min/100m down, and I tell you, nothing is worse than living with your 9yr old coach 😔
lolol. I can imagine....So did you improve?
Old time- 49.98 seconds Free
New time- 38.87 seconds Free
Helped me qualify for my city’s swim team. :) (Required 40 seconds when swimming 50 meters)
Eli Disco REALLY? THE REQUIREMENT JUST TO QUALIFY FOR STATE IN MY STATE IS 25!!! DUDE I WANNA SWIM WHERE U SWIM
No? All the states qualifying times are at most 29 secounds
BeezWax 29?? MN 3AA section requirements for state is 24.31
@@monicadinh3361 no I mean all 50 states requirements, life would be easy if states was 29
@KSENIA VOLOVNYK try doing more drills and working on your turns and starts it doesnt matter how long your in the pool if you dont push yourself
me during practice: does stroke slowly to try and do it like in this video
coach: stop pausing!
me: IM THINKING
coach: about what you know how to swim -.-
Tacy Cruz me
I really dont like how everyone is talking in yards and not meters
Benther He has an Australian accent
In America pools are still meters hahaha
this is not possible to swim 100 meter in 20 second that is equal to human running speed
America is a continent
Benjamin Arguelles no it’s not. “North America” is and “South America” is but not “america”.
The clue is in the thumbnail . Just get a blue swimming cap lol
Haha
For me the tip about starting the pull on the catch too early which makes you push down on the water and not back is a game changer for me. Fantastic work...
I dropped 2 minutes on my 500m race with this technique! Thank you
"She's done a lot of training and been very consistent. So all these changes don't come without the hard work and the consistent, regular swimming involved as well." (At the end of the video).

I worked on these techniques on today's swim. Easiest mile I ever swam. THX!
Good work Mateo!
It's cool that a couple tweaks plus faster stroke rate got my mile down to 24 minutes--which is good for this 52 year old. Thanks again. Great tutorials.
MATEO NEVIS 52 year old.... that’s good for anybody!!!!!! good job!
This was worth watching..I love it keep up the good work
Thanks!
im 11 and my 100 free has been a 1min and one second for 2 months! I finaly broke one min after seeing this thanks!
Good job to her. Dropping 20 seconds per 100 is awesome.
Ok
Tamork Y sure
Tamork Y bs
Tamork Y highly doubt it. Half the people here are full of bs.
Tamork Y So you’ve been to the olympics then? Don’t lie to me jimmy.
another thing was the first one her kick was like a practice kick and the second one was a meet kick
this makes the biggest difference in the world! Right!

Those videos are so clear and well made. Thank you so much.
Get rid of the wobble and would shave off another 20 seconds! Get a kick board and practice those kicks!!
Fantastic video, watched it tried the angled hand during pull and helped straight away. I have a damaged knee so tend to use my legs more to balance me and focus on arms. Do you have any tips for swimmers with leg injuries.
GREAT visuals and explanation !!!!!
thank you
I have swimming today and we have a 200m warm up and I’m always dying so I need this
I dont think i can naturally get 20 seconds faster in a 100
Tia Elago-Oretu Kaumunika gfg
Very helpful! Subscribed!!
I hope this works- I’m trying to get less than 1:10 in my 100 free- Ik it doesn’t sound fast but I’ve only been swimming 2 years
Thx a lot, after this video
I can do 33sec. and finally win the olympics!!!
20 second for me will.break the world record
Excellent improvement, nice work!!!
You also gotta get her to stop moving her head all over the place and have a tighter core. There's a lot going on here that needs to be fixed.
Mike Thomas
Mike Thomas Also her left hand recovery seems to over reach and cross center line a little bit.
I have a 54 in the 100, and I just swam, didn't go a 34...
Tapan Panduranga 😂😂1:00.23 4 me and I didn't go 40 sec😂😂
57 for me... I'll try to do 37😂😂
you weren't trying hard enough
Tapan Panduranga Nice I got 52:67
HAHAH glad someone else had the same thought
Really good feedback!
Thanks a lot , will definitely apply these to my swimming 🤗
Old time for 50 meters: 42.31 (around 1 year ago)
New time: 31.27 (today)
Btw I’m 12 rn
Update: My time for a 50 is now 29.08
So, im the new world record holder in this event after this advice?
yes, yes you are
Very helpful, thanks! I will try to put this into practice.
great work guys keep it up
Great video; very helpful! Thank you.
Nice improvements and greeting from LA California. Keep the Friday feedback coming!
thanks Mugsy
Thanks bro I now hold the world record that is 40 seconds!
Great video !
Final conclusion - it’s not effortless but definitely with efforts!!😆
When your time is 1min or below I don’t think this helps
Why am I watching this I am too lazy to go swimming anyways...
thank you! after doing it for 2:01 I did for 1:47 and 1:43. great advice!
She did not dolphin kick off the wall
Vlogging WithTyler that's probably because when you compete in a triathlon, you are usually swimming in open water; there is no wall to push off from.
Man, all these people talking about how long they can swim while I'm here on my fat ass not knowing how to hold my breath for 5 seconds.
Really good video!
Thanks for this video. I have been trying to break my record for 100m freestyle i used to go 1:40 now i go 1:21
I am not a champion, but i think the way arms behave out of water is not correct elbows must be higher and hands close to the water almost toutching it. Thanks for the clip
the accent made want to listen more and more .,,.lovely tips lovely video ,.,.thank you
why thank you! 🇦🇺
I can swim 100m in 10 mins who can relate?
Me. 9min 400.
100m in 2:09 mn
100m in 1 minute. I improved a lot since last year by 30 seconds!
@ALEX At least i can float bro :D
I’ve never swam, so 1 month ago I swam a 50 freestyle in 1 minute. Now I swim it in 39 seconds.
yoooo thanks just got the world record by 5 seconds haha
i have a 1:24 100m free, i know i have problems related to exit angle and diving, alongside bad crossover and splashes
what do i do dawg?

I litterally have a gala tmr and I'm watching these vids 🤓
There is a short kid who goes a 1:57 at 14 200 freestyle. About 5 ft 2. I want to go that fast and I’m 5 ft 6 or 5 fr 7
I've been following Tower 26 (Jerry Rodrigues) and the kick here seems like a lot for triathlon? Am I misunderstanding? Nice progress here!
Jerry is a great coach. Everyone is different in terms of how much they should kick. She's going at about 400m pace in this video and wouldn't kick this hard in a half IM. Plus with a wetsuit on most people will kick less
I used to train in leotards which work like wetsuits. My time was appropriately fast.
Great video thank you!
I have no 8-9 months, I have 1 week left to achieve 750m in 12 min
Today I tried it with horrendous technique and achieved 600m in 13:30min
Her stroke cycle is also high. What exercises do we on land to ensure that we tire less in the water. I understand that technique plays a big part but you have to be strong also. But I know there are specific workouts to specific groups of muscles. Can anyone help

straight track
120° elbow
catch to hip
head look 1-2m forward
The first part was not clearly explained. How to extend you hand underwater ? Do I let my finger tips touch the top of the water or deeper inside the water ? This part is not clear
BRILLIANT!
Great vid it realy helps
I do 50 x 25m pool lengths in 26min 10sec, the touch turns do me and slow me down more than my technique (intermediate) I’d say. I’ll need to focus on faster turnaround to get quicker.
first look from a speedoor meter
Is this pool in Bathurst?
This works I used to swim a 19 and now I swim a -1
lol, that's amazing.
great! video haven't been in the pool for a couple of years but this gives me incentive. cheers! think i'm 2m per 100 ATM ;-)
michael blair nice! keep up the great work!!!!!
I swim as fast as Jason voorhees 🤷♂️
Dude imagine if Michael Phelps did this he could make the world record so much better
I was told that when your hand enters the water during a stroke, that you should move it in front of your face and down the center of your torso, because it creates more propulsion through the water, is that BS?

If I went twenty seconds faster in a 100, I’d be a world record holder.
Very cool... thank you so much
This guy knows whats up
Is there any swimming instructor here in Quebec City Canada?
I find it hard to keep the elbow above fingers and wrist. Any suggestions? Cheers
kicking on your front with your arms in front of you, try to feel the water going over your hands. Fingers should be at armpit depth. Then try the same thing while kicking on your side with one arm in front and the other by your side.
You might need to aim a lot deeper than is comfortable to change it.
Thanks! WIll try that. Are paddles good for this also?
Cheers.
So from 1:06 to 46?????
Brilliant many thanks
What underwater camera do you recommend, pls?
GoPro Hero 4 or above
I hate how people are being dicks to your channel whilst your content is just trying to help them out
2:00 to 1:40?!
yes, per 100 meters in a 1900m swim
So about 6.5min off, you buried the lead there ;) i was thinking this is really not that great for 8 months of supervised training.
Is that bathurst aquatic centre?
i think the pool with green and yellow ropes is my hometown pool... Bathurst?
Guess what? I swam so fast steam was rising from the water ;-;
I’m here because I challenged a D1 swimmer to a race.... wish me luck! Her brother is an Olympian, if I miraculously beat her I’m challenging him next!😂
