  • As the 2024 SDG High Level Political Forum reviews the Goal 1, ending poverty in all its forms, to what extent is the world on track with one of the fundamental preconditions in eradicating poverty - the ownership, access, and control over land by the people?
Despite realising land ownership of women and men worldwide is an indicator under the Goal 1, member states are falling short of reporting on what they committed for. According to the research conducted by the SDG Land Momentum Group, only 12% of the UN Member States so far have reported on this relevant indicator in a timely manner.
Land is both an economic resource and fundamental prerequisite to guarantee food security for the people. Currently large-scale commercial agriculture continues to take over land traditionally used by indigenous peoples (IPs), pastoralists, and smallholder farmers. At the same time, large-scale land deals for wind parks and solar farms take place in the context of global climate action. In addition, millions of hectares of land are required to meet the projected biological carbon removal in climate pledges and commitments. Such demands carry detrimental impacts on people and their livelihoods, who live on and from the land.
In this backdrop what actions are needed to compel state parties to take actions? This session will brought data on present land security in the world highlighting its impact on poverty eradication, explore possible drivers countries to take actions and how to report on progress with the involvement of the people.
