Build Up a Great R&B Groove In Three Stages -"Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", Bobby Bland

- Shoutout to channel member Vik who was working on this today - a lovely one-bar groove feel inspired by Ed Greene's drumming on this Soul/R&B classic. This groove's a really great chance to think about playing the busier bass drum parts seen at the Grade 3/4 level and above.

Brilliantly demonstrated and broken down for an absolute beginner like myself. Thank you for taking the time to put this up! Saved in my drumming list ☺
Great, thanks for watching and glad you dig. The one thing I would say is that the 16th notes on the bass drum here mean this one really isn't a beginner groove. As I say in the vid it's around the Grade 3/4 level.
Couple of beginner groove and fill videos for you here...

@@MikeBarnesDrums Oh, yes sorry i implied that unintentionally! I can't pedal for toffee at the moment without it all turning to spaghetti 🤣 I appreciate the style you put it over, helps a lot. Thank you for the links, i'll be sure to check them!
Really good mindset video as well as the groove! As you say Mike, we just have to do the work *slowly*. Our ego likes to make us think we can do all these things, then when we can't we just give up when all it needs is just s-l-o-w, deliberate, focused practice.
Yes! Ego is the enemy (as Ryan Holiday taught us). Cheers
The Tom Tom Club, Genius of Love, beat, also has a 16th note similar to this. Dont rush into this when you, to use mike's favorite word, struggle, with this. Do it slow. Mike has some great explanations as to how the brain works when learning this stuff. Some of it is mentioned here in this clip. The taking your time bit if you are having a not so easy time with it.
Its a new year so i am going to "start up again". Drumeo had a serious issue this year. They had to drop like over 5000 songs on orders of the rights holders. So all players on that platform, myself included, were suddenly without our songs as they were taken away. I lost all songs on my practice playlist. Every single one.
My practice went from a few hours maxxing out at 5 or 6 hours a day to reach grade 3 and being pumped about it, to 1 hour a week at best. I lost all motivation. They pulled the rug out from under my feet. I understand it is up to me to decide if i want to play and this should not matter. To that, i say this. They took all my songs and all that was left i was not really interested in. They took all popular music and literally left stuff i was not interested in. Not gonna call it trash out of respect for the creators but the stuff did not suit me.
And doing their method is ok but kind of like chewing on a paper back book.
Drumeo has now spent the last 6 months telling us that the songs are coming back ect. Not seem much evidence of this. Some songs are coming back but its a trickle and nowhere near the number we used to have. Also, most of the songs coming back are not popular or even well known. Yeah , its music and all that jazz. But we paid for a service we are not getting.
All rock was taken. So only old obscure stuff nobody young even knows was left. No Pink Floyd, Metallica and nothing that even comes within a hair of those two. No Foo Fighters. The place had two XTC songs and they even managed to remove the one single one i was working on. Making Plans for Nigel.
No pop. So no Dua Lupa. Only the old stuff got left in like Madonna's Papa Dont Preach. Ancient stuff. Cool song to learn at around the grade 3 mark.
If this drought over there continues then i have to think about my sub fee. I paid for a year subscription and then two months later they remove all songs. grrr. That was 250 pounds. So nut chump change. All at once as well so no paying it bit by bit.
Yes - Though "Struggling" is definitely my LEAST favourite word in the world of drum learning, not my favourite!
