Hello, Mr Bald! Never thought you will visit our beautiful town. But there are not so many places with Soviet aesthetics, because they began to be destroyed in the early 90s. But you can still check this places in Tallinn: →Patarei prison and Linnahall is not counted due your video then :D (Prison is being reconstructed and Linnahall is still in plans to be renovated). →Maarjamäe Palace Park with Soviet memorials. →Russian Cultural Center at Mere puiestee 5 (The building did not fall under the decommunization law and was taken under protection as an architectural monument). Untouched building also on Tartu maantee 24 and Koidu 122 (Soviet neoclassicism). →Visit the Tallinn train station with market near it and go to the Telliskivi area (check the 2nd floor of the market with all the soviet antiques). →I've heard Hotel Viru has KGB museum or something. →Tallinn TV Tower →Just visit residental area: Väike-Õismäe, Mustamäe and Lasnamäe (especially the last one haha). I can also add "Museum of Occupation and Freedom" but this option is at your discretion. Wish you successful trips and travels!
It wasn’t only a soviet prison, it was also used by the new Estonian government for about 10 years after the Union’s collapse and is considered one of the most haunted places in Estonia as many of the most notorious Estonian criminals either died or were executed there.
It was a nasty place. The executions were pretty much all improvised and there wasnt any guidelines from soviet union on how to do it. The execution room itself is right next to the prison's sauna. So if the time comes, the prisoner was told that he will be taken to sauna to wash. When they arrived there the guards would quickly shove him into the room next to sauna so the prisoner didnt know until the very last minute that he will be killed. This way they didnt put up a fight until the very last minute. From there, they would strip him, let him do his last prayer etc, force him to kneel down and the executioner would just shoot him to the back of his head with a pistol. The executioner was always given 2 bullets so that if the first didnt fire (and it happened) he was able to reload and try again.
many years ago, a friend of mine went to prison for a few years and then got out. laterwards, he was fond of saying "every day you're not in prison is a good day" I've never forgotten.

How do people in Tallinn react to you speaking Russian? I feel like especially younger Estonians would just prefer you to speak in English. Maybe the older people are better at Russian, but I think the Baltics are the most anti Russian part of the former USSR
Let's say the most "anti Soviet"... relation with Russian speaking population and Russian Tourist ( pre COVID time :-/ ) is more complex than that. Every Estonian I know has anyway some knowledge of the language but for sure young generation is most of the time more confident to use English .

I might be missing something here, but you do realize this place is open to the public as a museum right? I've taken several classes there... they even do guided tours there with former inmates as guides. It's also used for art exhibitions, concerts etc. Still a very creepy place.

Nahhhhh your buildings don't even remind anything of russia, they are all renovated. In Lithuania we have this weird city „Visaginas“ which population is mostly russians and that city looks soviet as hell. Germany is too developed for that.
