I hereby dub this the Lyons SSK, which sounds like a space shuttle to me, but hey who cares! The decrease lies flat, and looks really nice with lacework! Thank you!
Yes! The section on gauge helped me achieve accurate gauge, as I stopped bordering my gauge sample with garter stitches. I did not realize that the garter stitch edging was distorting my gauge samples. Thank you, Ms. Lyons!
Patty, you are a GENIUS! There is always more to learn and more to unvent, even for something so simple as an SSK. I tend to be a reductionist-ie, how different could a different method of SSKing be, given that it results in the same yarn pulled through the same loops in the same order-but this is *opening my mind* in the best way
I just tried this out and it really worked great! I'm knitting with really bulky yarn, so the left decreases were glaringly evident, ugly and really distracting from the design-- this technique cleaned things up immediately! Thank you!!
I just tried this for the first time after discovering this video a few days ago. It made the prettiest mitten top I've every knitted! It's a little finicky to work, especially the first few times, but it is worth it for the really nice result. I don't hate the SSK anymore! Thank you!
Patty, I took your customizing patterns class at STITCHES this last weekend and loved it. You are an engaging speaker and you gave me the confidence I needed to make some of the major alterations I've avoided. Now, you've solved my #1 problem. Seriously. I've been knitting for 25 years and the SSK never looks as nice as the K2tog. Tried this and voila! Thanks!
I’m knitting hat decreases (K2tog, ssk) and then knit next row and it’s just so loose between these 2 stitches. This tightens up that space beautifully. Thanks you for this. 😊
Mind. Blown. If this works for me you’re going on my favorite people forever list! Im such a perfectionist and my ssks have been killing me! Now instead of dreading coming up on an ssk im excited!!! Oh wow I can’t thank you enough!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️ #favoritepeoplelist
Wow, I never thought about that trick before for SSK, though a bit awkward, if it improves the look on the SSK I'm totally giving it a try. You're a genius! Thanks for the tutorial, very clearly explained and logical.
You get so used to it, that it won't feel awkward at ALL. We used this on the Tortola video sweater class and Corcoran video sweater class. Made the decrease look lovely and smooth!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I saved your video, & sent the link to my email. Thank you for your very fine expertise & making it possible for me to knit for my lovely family in excellence. I have learned so much from RUclips, & you are one of its best teachers! ❤️
I've been knitting for 4 years and have never heard of this before. Thank you very much! I can't wait to try it out on the cowl I just started. You also helped me figure out how to avoid ladders in magic loop. Thank you for that too.
I can't believe I've never seen this video before. I knit Portuguese style and ktbl is very awkward so I've done sl1k1psso in place of ssk for years. But coming out of the back loop of the second stitch like this and then swinging the tip back to the front will stretch things out like shown while also getting the needle in place to make the new stitch. Besides making a neater left leaning decrease, this might just also be a great way of doing ssk Portuguese style.
This is amazing 🤯 . I can’t wait to bring this to our next guild zoom knit night. SSKs have been something that always left me with regret and you have solved it. Genius 👏🏻
Patty, I have had my top 4 people for sometime well let me say there has been some bumping going on today (first time I have had the honor of watching you) I now have my top five and you are on the mountain top right now! Oh, I am going to be sharing you on a knitting group for sure, I am subscribing and I look forward to maybe some of your other fans commenting back and some new people subscribing to you. from Fireside Knitter in Montana.
That was amazing to watch and the result is astounding! Thanks so much! Saving this in Favorites so when I come across it I will have this to refer to!
Thank you Patty! This looks perfect! Another tool in my knitting tool box. This is like a major new feature added to a car that greatly improves enjoyment and drivability, like power windows or even automatic transmission! 😁💗
My dear Granny B, born in London, professional knitter in Malta in WWII, showed me her SSK in about 1975. It was: Slip 1 knit-wise, slip 1 purl-wise; then, with the left needle, knit those two stitches on the right needle together through the front loops. I believe it is the same SSK result as yours, Patty. I may be biased, but I think it's a little quicker and easier. Interesting, no?
Your gran was onto a part of it, but I'm afraid it's not quite the whole picture. Also, it's not quite quicker, and it won't really give you the same results. Your Gran did twist the bottom stitch, but she added a few extra moves in there that you don't need, and it's skipping the most important step which is stretching out the bottom loop to take slack out of the first loop. When you slip a stitch from on needle to the other purlwise, you are moving a stitch from one needle to the other for not reason. So instead of slipping one stitch, slipping another stitch, then inserting your needle into them both and knitting them together, I just put my needle into both stitches and knit them together AND fix the slack. Have you tried what I'm teaching in the video yet? Give it a try. In my upcoming book I show a picture side by side from the old slip one as if to knit, slip one as if to purl vs the one move SSK and you'll see the huge difference.
@@PattyLyonsKnitting Well, Auntie Robin respectfully owns her disagree! I did grab my needles and yarn and tried the way you suggest as well as my own to have a good look at them both. I find Granny B's way less awkward (the stitches are slipped so that one doesn't have to fish around the back and try to get the needle in that tighter stitch) and therefore ultimately quicker, and the most important thing -- as you say, and I agree, to stretch out the second loop to take slack out of the first -- is accomplished automatically Granny's way when the left needle is inserted through the front loops at a 45-degree angle. This difference aside, this is a very good opportunity, now I'm typing, to thank you for all your videos, Patty. I think they're wonderful. Your illustration of tension issues arising from the way many RUclips knitting teachers demonstrate Continental alone was absolutely brilliant and worth its weight in gold.
This is SUCH a great improvement. Do you anywhere show how to tink this SSK, Patty? I’m stupidly struggling! I guess I could try and deconstruct and make sense of it, but it would be a quicker learning curve if you’ve already told us somewhere!
Tinking this ssk is no different than tinking a standard SSK with one small difference. With a traditional ssk, when you tink it, you then have to reverse both stitch mounts. Here after you insert your needle back to front into both stitches to tink them, you only have to reverse the first stitch mount. To REALLY understand how to tink increases and decreases (as well as tons of other fixes) check out this class - pattylyons.com/product/advanced-fixes-in-knitting-23/

I don't think that's possible with this technique, but you could go through the front loop of one stitch and the back loops of the next two.
Is there a similar technique for ssp?
You can prep them the row before by knitting eastern, then you'll be able to work into both stitches through the back loop in one move.
👏👏👏. Thanks so much!
I recall old way
Slip both over to right switch stitches then knit
Before it was ssk
Simple genius 😍
