Berkley Gulp! Sandworm VS. Live Pile Worm - Which Will Catch More Fish?

  • I was very curious if live bait (Pileworms in this case) would catch more fish than the artificial well known Berkley Gulp Sandworm. I'm also interested to see what YOU think will catch more. Watch until the end to see which bait outperforms the other in this live bait vs fake bait contest!

    you can actually draw a straw poll, it is part of youtube, and all viewers can vote with one touch. Watch a video on youtube to see how you could make one instead of having people dislike ur video and crashing your video's rating to the ground.

      actually i assume he knew what he was trying to do i have to hand it to him what he did was realy clever. Id say 9 out of 10 people wil say live bait is better than fake bait and he assigned live bait to "Like" and received many likes over dislikes. He manipulated the system, he encouraged people to interact with the like and dislike system and in the end received what he realy wanted wich was likes.

    I've caught fish on chewing gum, piece of yarn, beer can top, piece of wood with glued on glitter, etc. Not saying ready made stuff isn't good but I think there's also a lot of hype out there, sometimes I feel like I'm the fish being caught. Cheers Matt! Couple of nice day's coming up, finally!

    just a little tip which may or may not be of help, here in Australia we have a worm called a tube worm which looks very similar to the pile worm. instead of cutting the pinchers off thread the worm through the mouth and it will bite down on the hook and sort of lock onto the hook meaning your bait is much more secure and won't slip as much. I don't know if it will behave the same but it's near identical to a tube worm so I'm only assuming it would! God bless

    Appreciate the experimentation and sharing it with us! For future experiments, consider all variables to ensure reliable conclusions. In this case, the Gulp bait was always on the bottom hook. Perhaps most fish were cruising low and that's why they went for artificial. Some variables can't be controlled, but occasionally reversing the bait positions or better, fishing with TWO rigs close by, with reversed bait positions, and the conclusion is more reliable.
    Polite suggestion only- it's hard to criticize your entertaining and informative content. GREAT JOB!!!!
    Chris

    If I'm not mistaken, the Berkley Gulp Sandworm has glitter in it, hence it creates the shimmering effect under the sun light. That itself improves the bite chances

    I often recycle some soft plastics in the gulp juices too :-) -- Synthetics are convenient and practical for hard core hobbyists that do not plan, or have time to catch their bait. live bait or cut bait is virtually always better than artificial bait, unless you are fishing for farm-raised fish that have never had live food. However the Gulp-sandworms are pretty tough. I've caught three or four fish in a row on the same rubber worm and then put it back in the pouch.

    That big rock you were fishing at used to have a pathway that went out to it and fisherman would throw bugeye jigs for stripers.
    If someone hooked one, someone else would have to hold the fishing line on the northside of the rock while the fisherman would run down the path to the little beach you were on and land the striper. Once the fisherman reached the beach, he would signal the dude holding his line on the rock and tell him to let the line go.
    It was crazy because I remember a dude from Brisbane fell off of the front side of the rock. The dude used to drive a Corvair I remember.

    If you tease the worm to make the pinchers come out then jam the hook between them, it's a really strong hook up. The pincher appendage is a super strong "sleeve" of tissue.

  • @thebowman2
    @thebowman2 7 лет назад +3

    These artificial worms would be a good idea when I'm fishing with a three hooks setup. Usually its the bottom hook that catches the most, so I could use a real sandworm on that one and use fakes on the other hooks.

      We tear the trout and Redfish up in the Gulf here in Florida on the Gulp Shrimp. They will outfish live bait, sometimes it is because of the colors, sometimes just being able to have the bait stay on the hook longer

    You make a great point. Berkeley sand worms are a great option to catching perch in comparison to live bate. However, if you really want to compare Apple's to Apple's, you forgot to include live blood worms. I fish in the Monterey Bay for perch on the weekends, and although we don't have a pile worm supplier, we do have blood worm suppliers. I'm not saying you aren't aware of blood worms, but I'm only noting you forgot to also bring blood worms in the competition. And they Are more expensive than the pile worms. In Salinas, they'll run you about $13 per dozen. Depending on size of worms, each worm is good for 4-6 hooks. Like your videos.

  • @fishinfreak4374
    @fishinfreak4374 7 лет назад +4

    You have to take into consideration that the pile worm caught the bigger fish, while the sandworm caught all the little fish.

  • @MrTatts64

    In the UK, those things are called "Rag Worm". I have dug more than enough of them that are thicker than my thumb and its only the biggest which can cause a minor stinging sensation as opposed to a bite. Sure, it can make you jump sometimes (surprise) but that's the worst I have experienced of them.
    Now although use both of those worm baits (Gulp and Rag) I have yet to experience a day where the artificial has beaten the real thing. Try them suspended under a float / bobber, but assuming the worms are 6" or longer, hook them an inch down from the head, thread them on carefully so as not butcher the side of the bait, fill the hook and cast out gently. Current and tide will take your gear where it needs to go, so be prepared to let out more line. Best of luck mate!

    You are my first subscription for surf fishing. I liked to watch the comparison. I use both. I tried my own comparison with the sand worm and lug worms. I could get 3 lug worm sections per worm.12 worms in a container. I can't remember how much. Went to seal beach. Same as you top, bottom rig. Surf was perfect. I fished sand worms on both hooks, then live on both hooks. At Seal Beach I caught a few with sand worms but killed it with lug worms, Thanks for the vid. I like the way you took the time to explain everything. No matter how small. The reading of the surf to explaining the moss on the rocks. You just taught me how to put both on the hooks. I think everyone has their own style. I was just surprised at the exposed hook. They still hit it. Thanks again.

      Hi TheGaming Hybrid .... I have only used the Gullp white twister tails (little white nymphs) for bluegill and crappie and they worked great but I don't fish freshwater too often so I am not the guy to ask for sure.... Frankly the time I did fish freshwater you could have just put in a plain old hook with nothing on it and probably caught just as many fish...

    Not sure where you are fishing, but here in the PNW we called those worms kelp-worms. Have used them many times when fishing from the jetties, when I run out of other bait. Have caught some nice pink ear sea perch Just chip away at the barnacles and you can find the worms under them. If there is a lot of kelp on the rocks where you are fishing, you can take a few minutes to turn the kelp over and find the bigger worms there. We just threaded them on like a night crawler, on a two hook perch rig, with a flat or pyramid weight at the bottom and a small clear float to keep the bait suspended. It is fun when you hook two good sized perch at a time. Love to fish and used to go when ever I could get out. Had a stroke awhile back and cannot get out like I used to do, it is hard to navigate the beach sand or carry your crab traps, bait and other fishing gear while using a walker. - - - //es//A 70y/o Avid Outdoors Lady(disabled) and Veteran, 1965-1994

    Honestly I think it’s more about the spot you are and how much bait their is in the area and which lure is on the top or bottom of the rig but I would just use gulp worms for both hooks in a good area with bait to be most effective. I think if you can find your own bait then I would do that but to cost effective I would think about it that way

    I live on the Central Coast, and the Gulp bait has ALWAYS produced. The perch went off last year like crazy- it was actually difficult to find the Gulp sand worms in some stores because it was THAT good. Admittedly, I haven't had a chance to get out and fish this year (crying on the inside), but I would bet that the Gulp would produce just the same. Also, based on what I have seen, I think the Carolina rig produces far more than the 2 hook and sinker rig- no hard proof to back that up, though. All that said, I would absolutely rather spend money on the Gulp than pile worms any day of the week.
