I was brought here by Oliver Sack's book "An Anthropologist on Mars" These stories are so interesting. I don't know where I'm going to take all this knowledge, but I hope I take it somewhere. Thank you for putting this up.
This begs belief: All three, too incredibly gifted and disabled, simultaneously - such an enigma. Even more a mystery: I can reconcile in my head the opposing thoughts on how both the pianist and artist are able to achieve their artistry; but not so with Noel. The former two have at least 'concrete' starting points from which to memorise and recall directly to practice; however, Noel has nothing but random dates, similar to Kim Peek's akin ability. ANYONE: HOW'S HE DOING THIS, AND AT LIGHTNING SPEED TOO??
Muzo5628 STEIN I have always thought exactly the same. I find it frustrating that he doesn't know how he recalls the dates himself. I can only compare it to someone asking me my name and although I obviously know the answer, and could reply immediately, I do not ever recall ever being told it!! The most baffleing of the three of them. Thanks for your comment.
Agreed then! I love extra-terestial things, such as these three savants; I've actually met Stephen Wiltshire @ a The Mail Box Gallery, B'ham and my ex-girlfriend bought one of his works on that occasion, 2009. Kim Peek remains the most extreme of them all, in my recollection, but they're all marvellous. GOD BLESS THEM ALL!
It was David Kidd who knew the dates so well. Noel is the pianist; Stephen the artist. And savant skills are very Earth-bound. That's why we call them "skills".
You might try reading "Islands of Genius" or "Extraordinary People", both by Donald Treffert. Both books have chapters which tend to explain how "savant syndrome" works. Fascinating books.

Ah, the AMAZING Stephen Wiltshire as a child from 6 minutes on! It's where it all begun, so good to see!!!
Remember seeing this as a child and I love seeing what Stephen Wiltshire has done with his life as an adult...very inspiring!!
"Mature, self-confident artistry". *yes*!

10:24, Stephen Wiltshire's appraisal from Sir Hugh Casson.
