Unusual Crash Test Footage

- A clip from the Television series "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" with host Jack Palance that aired in the mid-1980's. The story was about automobile safety and the importance of wearing your seat belt. The first half featured the familiar footage of crash test dummies in the ultra slow-motion from American car crash tests done in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This amazing clip shows the end of the segment where German crash tests used live human volunteers.
As far as I can tell this is most likely from the episode that aired on October 6, 1985.
I love the fact that in the second test, the windshield came off the car in one piece, but got completely annihilated the moment it touched the road.
Video game physics right there.
Maybe there was a conveniently placed grenade for the windshield
Italian safety engineering right there
@@bouncingshot BMW is apparently Italian according to you
low key, I wonder if it was designed to do that? The windshield shattered in pieces, maybe it is for safety it ejected the window?
I wont ever complain about my job again.
No joke... But honestly you could not pay me enough to be one of those freaking crazy people doing that
What is your job ?
@@awho33 hi Alicia what's up ?
@@awho33 i would, only if its a volvo or hyundai.
You think your job sucks,I'm mowing lawn.
I remember this footage from auto class in high school. And yes we got in trouble for pointing out that the guy in the Mercedes was smiling!
@Volker Djamani Really!! Somehow many pastime childhood memories are modeled after Hermann's crash footage. To find out that he has a professional stunt team sparks interest. I wonder if he'd ever train someone like me!
@Volker Djamani like the footage! Does the head/neck bracing technique work?
wth why would you do that
I wouldn't mind being a crash test dummy in modern European cars, but those men had the balls of steel when they were performing tests in these ancient cars. Thank god we now have like 8 or more airbags, crumple zones, pretensioners, AEB, seatbelt load limiters, etc. in most new cars (Renault has been doing this since the 2001, in the Laguna, Megane, Scenic, ...). My friend crashed a 2004 Renault Scenic at 80km/h (50mph) head-on into a tree and walked away with only a minor cut on hir arm.
@Jose Alberto Rosa-Suliveres 8 airbags... *laughs in latam* xDDDDDDDDDDD
If you think those late 70s/early 80s cars were ancient I wonder what you think about the utter death traps of 40s and 50s cars
Thanks and salute to those who perished back then to give safer cars in this generation ... RIP.
cars this generation that can literally crash at motorway speeds and you can literally just walk home from
I got in a crash on January 1st and it was snowing heavily. The car lost traction and starting sliding sideways towards a utility pole and I thought to myself "I'm going to miss it by inches or hit it good". The corner of the front bumper clipped the pole and it caused the car to spin around so violently that both doors (2 door coupe) flew wide open. If I was not wearing my seat belt I would have been ejected and sustained some possible serious injuries. The only injuries that I sustained was frazzled nerves and a dent in my wallet when I had to buy another car.
The sequal was called "Der 7. Sinn" and was shown weekly on public western german TV - for more than 30 Years.
So we were entertained every week with a new series of crashs.
Even in Austria. :)
I remember that show!! I watched a lot of German tv when I was a kid. Where I come from wasn't much going on on tv in the '70's and '80's...
1:46 Is he seriously SMILING while he crashes into the rear?
wouldn't you?
If someone would give me car to crash it into other cars I would smile too.
@Eat Jat No, I saw a longer version of it where he unbuckled after crashing. He was smiling.
He's driving Mercedes Benz, smiling is common in such fine car even when crashing it's a pleasant ride.
Musicshredder1211 I think he is a Russian guy
I remember seeing these same clips in driver's ed back in 1980. I believe that our instructor told us that these were German prison inmates that volunteered for this to get time off of their sentence.
No, the guy with the black hair is Hermann Joha. He was a member of the famous british "Hell Drivers" in the late 1970s and worked as a stuntman in the 1980s. He later founded a film production company which exists to this day (specializes in stunt shots). This footage is from 1987 was part of a geman weekly car show aimed at safety ("Der 7. Sinn"), see original footage here: ruclips.net/video/NQ0ArAkJk0s/видео.html
Saw these types of films for driver training in West Germany. Keep in mind they were routinely driving 160kmh/100mph often without seatbelts. Still accidents are rare. Hello American drivers??!! Lol.
That old Mercedes-Benz, held up very well, I'd say.
That Benz wasnt old in that days. Nowadays it would crumble into pieces even fully restored
@@Flo81 It would hold up just as well today as long as its not rusted through.
@@martinsv9183 depends on what it collides with, but for the most part the plates have the same durability nowadays
@@Flo81 Who told you that?
little late but as someone who lost brakes and wrecked my w123 into a tree at 35, i can agree they hold up very well and seatbelts do save lives.
LOL...from 0:47 till end it`s stuntman Hermann Joha. Today he`s producing the german action tv show Cobra11.
Great automotive safety educational film narrated by actor Jack Palance.
This is so cool but insane XD
yeah, I won't try this at home ............. errrm or in my car (Mercedes 260E) on the street
Yeah, germans have rich history of experiments on human beings;)
Cyancobalamine Intercellular did you say Guantanamo ?
He is smiling because he is a free man now pretty sure those were life sentenced pows of the 3rd reich
@@dutsfoel9251 don't worry, that mercedes has airbags and mercedes is a safe car
The dummies of this era was so much better looking than those modern!!
1:39 that guys neck has to be screwed. his whole head missed the head restraint on the rebound and as a result his neck took the full force of that whiplash.
being trained doesn't help you in a fucking car crash
Fine, you have convinced me to stop.
I'm not sure whiplash was even a thing in the 70s. This can mean 2 things: it was underrated back then, it is overrated today, or something in between. Whiplash today can mean anything from a slight headache to being permanently disabled... In this case the effective delta V of the accidents wasn't a lot, probably 10-15mph. I think being "screwed" there is a bit of a wild claim.
captmcneil hell i hit someone at 5mph and the woman passenger claimed whiplash, they slammed on in front of me at a roundabout, i reckon it was a scam.
Alarm for Cobra 11 was a cool show. We only got 2 series here then it was dropped. Scheisse!
I liked this because the test dummies aren't going to tense up, grip the wheel or try to control their impact on the airbags. It's cool to see the tests. If I am ever so lucky as to total my CX-5 and walk away unhurt, I know which way to go when the airbag explodes so I don't end up between the side and steering wheel bags nailing my forehead on the A pillar!
Those guys must of been paid well I hope.
I bet they were but I doubt they could pay ME enough to do it, not in those cars, maybe some modern ones.
The last guy looked like he would have done it for free
I have heard somewhere that they were actually criminals that participated in this in return for less time.
Yes they were paid well. Two bottles of Jägermeister and a box of Bratwurst for each.
Kyntteri we live in a society
Damn, that's pretty fucking crazy. Also pretty sad to see such classics get wrecked :/
Sjokolademelk they were not classics by then... people would say the same in 2050 of our today's Mitsubishi whatever... so rare in America that People obviously would drool over them in the future
the blue taunus man, the blue taunus!! :'(
that classics was brandnew at that time
Those car models were just 5-10 years old at that time. They wouldn't think twice about scrapping a 20 year old auto either... like, say a 1958 Chevy Impala. Or blowing it up for an action movie scene. Just like how we regard a 1998 Taurus, or a 2010 Nissan today...
my favorite classic is the 17' Toyota Prius.
#1:11 I'm pretty sure the guy in the mercedes is Hermann Joha, a quite popular stuntman in Germany.
It s him
The good thing about this kind of crash testing is that it shows actual human consequence. The last shot of the young man bracing for impact and not hitting his head on the steering wheel is more realistic. Is it a great idea, nope. I bet his life insurance rates are outrageous.
1:39 this dude be smiling the whole damn time he enjoyed it i guess......
The driver of the Mercedes back ending the Ford Taunus is Hermann Joha. Ex stunt driver and his founded company made "Alarm für Cobra 11" a German TV series with big crashes (the story was mostly thin). They started with it in the 1990ies and it ended last year...
Seatbelts save lives, and a soft steering wheel also helps.
honey how was your day? oh, i just hit a tree/parked car.
😂
I was in a minor accident the day before christmas eve. it was pouring rain and I got rear ended at a stoplight by a guy and although we didnt go much farther forward boy did we get thrown forward in the seat. shoulder belts help so much and im glad I was wearing it cause I wouldve ended up in the hospital for a head injury
Tyler Dixon screaming tires and busting glass...
I'm alive today because I WASN'T wearing a seatbelt!
@@paullarzazs9601 Wrong.
A lap and shoulder belt saved me one night in a head on collision in my 1970 Electra with a 1978 Cadillac. The other driver didn't have on a belt- not a pretty sight.
@@paullarzazs9601 That's a rarity, so many deaths occur from getting thrown out of the vehicle, smashed against tarmac/trees/buildings/railing and then the bonus of being crushed/run over by other vehicles. Search for 'Chi Cheng' before and after - didn't wear a seat belt, was in a coma for months, then came out in a complete vegetative state, and then died a few years after.
I'm grateful for their work.
These volunteer tests should continue..
yco67 yeah the N Korean car industry should do something like this and put Kim Jong un on the bonnet( hood ( in American)) and film and put it on tv.lol
Maybe use flat earthers 😆
Digi imagine someone in a panda suit doing that.
Imagine to be in a Tata Nano
I volunteer all flatearthers for more future tests.
"Ripleys believe it or not" was the show it was on. i remember it when I was a kid 😆
0:52 first in the BMW and then with the Mercedes: The young driver is the German Hermann Joha, who now owns his own film and television production company and is the managing director of the action concept film and stunt production company in Cologne/Germany
Der 7. Sinn is still very informative and helpful til this day. Danke für die coolen Stunts Egon Hoegen
Smiling is actually a pretty common response to fear. My friend did a tour in Iraq as a bomb-dog handler, and told me about an instance where they caught a jihadist. He said the guy's terror-smile stayed with him for life, and was one of the scarier things he saw while there.
Ehhh i think he smiled more because of the adrenaline of knowing he’s about to crash a car on purpose 😂 he was like “here we go 😏” lmao
"So what do you do?"
"I crash cars"
"no, really..."
"..."
This video has been brought to you by 4th Reich Motor Works.
Joey this exhibit is closed!
Did you mean Volkswagen??? 4th Reich Motors = Volkswagen.
lol That Simpsons clip brought me here.
Looking for the definition of dedication in the workplace? Just watch this film.
1:49 the smile on the guys face, priceless haha must be a derby car driver
A stuntman - these were safety ad clips, not crash-tests.
Mercedes-Benzes & BMWs are pretty strong cars. I survived a fairly bad crash in a BMW unscathed.
Those crash dummies are so realistic looking! 😜 🤣 🤣
This I saw on tv 30 years ago
Talk about "Balls of steal"!!!!
steel.
I don't even bother correcting the Damn spell check anymore!! nobody else caught it,I salute you!!!!
Anthony Pirozzi. The guy risked his life for seatbelt advert. I hope they paid him well
Not steel. Its pure germanium
Wow sounds like a fun job
That job would be horrifying
Più crash test reali di così.. si muore!!!
Wow cant believe they actually did this
It really wasn’t until the late 90s before people started wearing seatbelts. That’s why they had to have real people in this footage to show you just how important it is.
This video isn't an exaggeration at all, vehicles weren't that fast due to the material they were made of, so, that mean't that the average, responsible driver would have a great probability to survive a minor crash like those presented in the video.
1:30 After this his boss comes out, "WTF, man, I didn't mean for you to actually crash!"
Love the smile at the end
From unfortunate experience I can advise letting go of the steering wheel if you are going to hit something. I was involved in an offset collision on the drivers side and the kinetic energy that came up through the steering wheel broke my arm and damaged the ligaments in my wrist. I was wearing a seatbelt and had a steering wheel airbag that deployed and I suffered no other injury.
Actually in the original German film they tell you to pull the steering wheel towards you so that scenario does not occur
Volvo were the pioneers bringing in seatbelts before other manufacturers.
They invented it they were not only the pioneers, they also release the right of invention to afford other manufacturer to install it in their car without any fees of invention
Impressive !!
1:45 looks so happy to smash that Merc, you can almost think he won the lottery considering the smirk on his face?! Damn!
I always wear my seat belt, without exception.
Live "Crash Test Dummies"!! Crazy...
that Mercedes w108 is a tank!
Imagine the same scenario but with a Rover 100, the steering wheel would've wiped him out.
No it wouldn’t
Nice footage
These brave souls must have loved breaking stuff.
Seat belts and that W108 for sure. W108 was one of safest place to be against crash.
how do they just get out fine
These crash tests were done (presumably) in the winter of 1981-1982 and broadcast on the German TV show Der 7 Sinn on February 14, 1982. The cars all look mid to late 1970s, with the exception of the Mercedes W108 that is a 1965-1972 model. As far as I can tell the yellow car that ejected its windshield was an Alfa Romeo Alfetta, maybe circa 1976?
April 19, 2017 12:52 am
Blue car the Benz stuffs hard in the butt was a 1965-67 Ford Taunus 17m (P5) Car I saw hit the tree/throw the windshield was a BMW?
@@DrOlds7298Upon further research, I think the car that hit the tree and threw out the windshield was a BMW E3, which is the 1968-1977 generation of the line now known as the 7 Series. Looks like it's probably an earlier version of the E3, maybe about 1968-1972 or so.

This is a fragment from Ripley's Believe it or not! 1980's TV Show. I had this same fragment, in spanish.
Damn these people were the real deal!!! I can only imagine what their chiropractic added up to.
Totally unbelievable, crazy and insane, even they are trained!
Dramatic footage from the long-running German series "Der 7. Sinn" , which translates into English as "the seventh sense". Those 5-minute features started in the early 1970s as a type of public service announcement to promote traffic safety. Exploiting the innate human tendency to gawk at crashes, this show had very high ratings because viewers knew that if they stuck around to watch, they'd get to see a spectacular crash or even several towards the end. To heighten the dramatic effect the producers would use skilled stunt drivers to show realistic crash scenarios. More savvy viewers could tell by the age of the cars featured in a scene if a collision was about to occur. Whether this show ever helped prevent accidents is questionable. People watched this to gawk at crashes and not to modify their driving behavior LOL
Right, it was either... go crash car or get in chamber!!
Who was the wiseguy, who planted a tree two feet from the road way. ?
Herrmann Joha, geilster Typ!
I love how they all come out like "Great! We're here!
1:36 that face :D :D :D happy crashing dear crashkids!
Last guy being happy af cracked me up
That right! My beater back in the day ran 9's in the quarter and lifted the front wheels half track but that was cuz I added the roots blower off a GreyHound onto the aircooled helicopter motor in my old Tucker in the 90's... it was a screamer!
the guy in the Video is Hermann Joha, famous german stunt driver. He now owns a stunt school
German stunt performer, film producer and director Hermann Joha behind the wheel(s) during the early stage of his career.
Fearless!
I would love this job I get a rush of adrenaline when I crash
this guy could talk with the ingeneers.
never a crash test dummy could do it.
But the Dummy gives a lot of data were the forces were huge and were not. The guy says "I feel dizzy" 🤷🏻♂️
Hey wait! That's not a dummy!

It' s the young German Hermann Joha. Today he is producer for actions movies with his own company in Cologne/Germany.
@@tomtrana3449 wow thanks man i learn something new everyday🙂
A diesel W108 Benz probably wasn't a very nice car when these tests were carried out. But it's kind of hard to watch one get wrecked these days.
Employee of the month ...
Wow. Hope they compensated the drivers well.
they were gassed actually... thanks
The harder crashes were a BMW E3 & a Mercedes W108 because the drivers had much better survival chances (& proved).
Greetings from the international space station!
What?!?!?
Wow. 1960's cars, no air bags, nothing. Today our cars have airbags for everything but the hemorrhoids and if a company sonducted such tests it would be the worst scandal, alongside dieselgate I guess.
Ah dieselgate. They cheated the emissions tests to save fuel. Emissions standards cause increased fuel consumption and reduced power. There will be a black market on prerecalled diesel vw's for people who want that 40-50mpg with the ability to switch over to 100% used vegetable oil.
Ironically, emissions standards actually increases carbon dioxide output because you are reducing fuel economy. They tune the engine and use exhaust filters and catylists to convert the black exhaust to mostly carbon dioxide which increases the effects of global warming.
But people are ignorant so whatever. So they will trade in that 40mpg diesel for a gasoline car that struggles to maintain 26mpg. Idiots.
It is more entertaining with real people on real roads for sure.
a very young helmut joha. Owns today "Action Concept". They do all the stunts for Cobra 11.
Interviewer - what's you name?
Interviewee- John Smith
Interviewer - congratulations you've got the job when can you start
That last guy smiling through the crash just really unsettled me
And they say days were boring back then...
I almost cried seeing some of the cars destroyed here.
Wow! This is very disturbing to watch 🙈
01:49 ain't gonna smile like that the next morning...lol
Dangerous type of crash test..
Crazy. That's says it all.
So this is where they got the name 'crash test dummy"
Ya couldn't pay me enough to do that...all it would take would be a structural flaw in the chassis, or an unlucky impact angle and one could easily be decapitated or skewered by wreckage or even killed by blunt force trauma. INSANE!
I'd do what that guy did, but not in those cars. I'd need something newer with airbags. That last test crash was a 1965-1972 model (W108 generation) Mercedes S-Class. I'd probably only participate in that crash experiment if the S-Class I was in was a W140 (1991-1999) or newer - assuming I was paid a fair bit of money, which I assume this guy was.
