- 1/144 Airfix BHC SRN4 Hovercraft an old kit which was classified as level 4 with 269 parts. It had two options, open or close loading gates, Hoverlloyd or British rail "Seaspeed". Hoverlloyd's Swift and Sure and Seaspeed Princess Margaret. However, serial numbers for all three were the same SRN4-001 although the instruction sheet gave -002 and 003. Transparent parts provide view to highly detailed interior, command deck, passenger cabin, and car transport deck. Overall an excellent model kit of largest passenger hovercraft which was in use from the late sixties until the early 2000's.
Hi. I went on one of these when I was about thirteen. The weather was awful , bouncing off the tops of the waves. We landed in Bolougne but to get back we had to take a TGV to Calais. As a train buff that was a bonus for me. I can remember the liftoff and how high we were. No matter what the weather they went at full throttle. The memory of that day has stuck with me all those years. I,m 59 now. I can,t believe that it was that long ago. Good video , great build and a wonderful memory. Thanks.
Thank you! Glad that you had an opportunity to travel across the Channel with BNC SRN4. Since childhood I have been fascinated with hovercrafts unfortunately, never had the opportunity to experience travel in one. I still have one more example to build in the future.
@@DragoKraka Hi . Thankyou for your reply. It is and always will be a fond memory from my childhood. The only thing left at Dover now is one of the propellers on it original pylon that is now a memorial to the big hovercrafts. You can see it as you approach the main harbour. I was always impressed by their sheer size. They were massive , and I think that you can gauge that by your model despite it being 1/144 scale. You did a lovely job well done and thankyou.
I have been fortunate enough to have ridden one of these back in the 80's, when my parents took the whole family on an American Express tour of Europe. Our crossing must have been near the limit of flying weather, because it was extremely windy. The trip across the channel was rough, to say the least. I didn't get sick, thankfully.
I've never had this kit, but I do remember going to Kent on holiday when I was a child, in the early 1970's, and watching these beasts coming and going from the hoverport at Ramsgate - now sadly empty and deserted. The SRN-4 was huge. The kit, although big, does not prepare you for just how big these craft were. Seeing them at full throttle, heading for France, was something you never forget. When I was a kid, hovercraft were the future. A future that was cancelled all too soon. I actually shed a tear when I found out that all the SRN-4 hovercraft had been broken up for scrap.
Lovely build, though, and a nice memory jogging video. Thank you. 👍👍👍
Thank you, it must be impressive to see SRN4 at Ramsgate!
It was. The remains of the place are very gloomy and sad, though. I doubt I'll go back there again.
Not quiet. 004 The Princess Anne is the only remaining N4 and still remains at The Hovercraft Museum , Lee-on-the-Solent
I attempted this kit aged ten in 1978 approximately and made a total hash of it. It is lovely to see such a well made example. The clear half roof allowing a cutaway view was an exciting feature of this kit.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you it was a great pleasure, I have one more to assemble in the future.
These Ladies are beautiful, no matter what size. Thankyou;)
Yes they are. Thank you!
I still have this model. I built it in the very late 60's or very early 70's.
I'd like very much to rebuild it as my modeling skills were not that great 55+ years ago!
You should it's worth it.
@@DragoKraka - I built mine with the doors up. I think there was the option to build the rubber skirts fully deployed or deflated. Is your kit a re-issue or an old model like mine?
Also, I painted several portions of the clear left sides (roof, side panels). To my eyes, it just didn't look right left as "open" as the instructions had suggested and how you finished yours.
Right now, the model is missing several prop blades and I think one of the engine pylons is missing. The blades all used to turn and the pylons pivot.
@@Wild-Dad This is a re-issue kit and it came without deflated skirts. I still have one more which I plan to make in motion on water and entirely painted. Wish you luck if you plan to rebuild it.
@@DragoKraka - the only way I could rebuild it would be to take it apart. Saying all that, it's 55 maybe older years old. The testors glue has maybe aged to the point that I could take it apart and rebuild much of it.
I went on swift back in 77 to calais on route to Holland
Nice build but I'm still not taking the shrink wrap off mine!!! 😊
Thank you, I have a same problem, one is still in the box.
Very nice build Drago. Was it reasonably easy to build or a bit tricky? Like you I have two - one from the original issue and one from the reissue. Not sure to build one as you have done and to build the other into a diorama. Thanks for uploading your photos.
Thank you, it was relatively easy to build, took time to get photos of the interior and car bay. The other plan to build with diorama as cruising on water.
@@DragoKrakaThanks for that.
