  • If you have been following our channel On The Grow you may have noticed that we love to do Microgreen experiments and have been doing them since 2019! - Today we’ll be focusing on another Microgreen Nutrient Trial where we test out the popular hydroponic/soil fertilizer known as Masterblend, specifically the Masterblend 4-18-38 Tomato Blend fertilizer to see how it affects the growth of our Broccoli Microgreen Grows when we use Coco Coir as the grow medium!
In this video, we grow 4 trays of the exact same Microgreen crop which again, is Broccoli, and all of the trays go through the exact same germination & seeding methods. Once it was time to start bottom watering the trays, we divided them into two groups according to the color of the trays. One group only received Filtered tap water during bottom watering, and then the other group only received Masterblend 4-18-38 during bottom watering. All trays received the same lights as well. We not only share the results of the regular filtered tap water against the MasterBlend fertilizer to see if it is worth adding to your microgreen grows, but we also discuss the added cost to us the nutrient along with doing a harvest weight, flavor, and appearance comparison of both groups side by side - plus we discuss a few other things here and there that you may find helpful.
Usually, we use the MasterBlend 4-18-38 blend as our go to nutrient for growing Adult crops such as Lettuce, Kale, Collards and also our Edible flowers such as Marigold, Anise Hyssop, Viola, and others because it really does wonders for the overall vegetable plant coloration and flowering if you need a plant to flower. And in this video, you'll see why we think it also works great for Microgreens too! :)

Nice! I’ve been using masterblend for a few years and always get great consistent results. They also have a lettuce formula which makes even more sense for greens. I just ordered some and can’t wait to try.

I’ve been using master blend for a year now with microgreens and it’s great. To the questions below just harvesting earlier before the stretch too much will increase the nutrition and look obviously. The earlier they are the more nutritious. Look at broccoli sprouts.

You increased your yield by 23% for just $0.17 per tray and you probably cut grow time by a day if you think about it. That’s really amazing

Thanks for the information, I've never used anything but, on last watering I'll use little home made compost tea. All is well and they are always tasty lol. But I love your channel you two do a great job. Grow on 😃✌️🌱🌱🌱🌱

I used the Master Blend mix on my NFT Hydroponic system last year. Worked great! Today, I added just a few sprinkles to the water for my dun pea microgreens ( being careful not to overwater, again). I think it should gib boost!

FYI, there's a lettuce formula that's softer on the PK. This should help reduce the stretching a bit.

I couldn't find, so I need to ask - have you done a trial watering with compost tea or just even a compost solution rich in fulvic and humic acids? I know you do not want to introduce outside pathogens in your greenhouse, however the microbiology suggests that a done compost should not only NOT do this but instead it should create a proper microenvironment for the plants building a mycorrhiza - the proper way to feed a plant as this allows it to request nutrients on demand. I have tons of grower experience, however not with microgreens and I love what you do! I have watched already most of your content and I think you would be super interested in a couple of lectures on RUclips regarding microbiology of soil and plant health. Let me know if you want me to send you link :) In any case - keep do what you are doing we love it and its extremely helpful (most of us do not have the time nor the space to do trials) :)

Masterblend is so expensive now at about 6 USD per pound which is insane. I really want to do some hydroponics but the prices are a bit steep when you add up the three ingredients together PLUS I do peppers, and tomatoes which will drink a lot of it. There has to be something cheaper than 30 dollars for 5 pounds, then 5 pounds of the calcium nitrate is 16, then the Epsom Salt at around 8 for six pounds.

@@miketalley1666 I purchased it begrudgingly. I know many reports, as well as here, says it is not all that good today when using tap water. In Indiana the guy said it precips horribly. Here in Memphis I had that as well just not as bad. I now use distilled water and no precip at all. The problem is the 88 cent per gallon distilled water is now $1.16 and rising. I can't keep that up and RO water is a huge expense and expensive. Supposedly there are better options for people who use tap water only I am unsure which brand(s) that is/are?

You mentioned that the master blend trays likely didn't need as much black out time because they were a bit too lanky. If you cut out 1 day of black out only for the master blend, how much of a difference is it really going to make on the superficial qualities/characteristics of your greens? From a popularity standpoint and if the richness of green color is the same do yall prefer a larger or smaller leaf?

Is there a ratio of the math financially that you explained you want to keep it under a certain dollar cents range per tray per nutrient ratio pound bag can you go into more detail spreadsheet on how to calculate the math to stay within a budget for bootstrap and starters beginning growers like myself. I can’t afford much because I’m trying to reinvest my disability state income into small gardening skills I hope to get better at so I can sell my extras at the farmers market when I get a plant license in Colorado.
Your math breakdown of each nutrient Master blend to each tray water seed to micro greens to plate would be very helpful if you could break down in very meticulous detail please in your next video update.

Ok, but the nutrition is in the cotyledons, not the stem. So we are at odds over weight and nutrition. I go with nutrition.

Im watching all your videos but i saw you eat raw microgreens, in many country they say its very dangerous to eat them because you can get Salmonella (Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori), E. Coli (Escherichia Coli 0157 H7), and various molds (fungi) is that true ,if you have some time please awsnser its mean a lot to me ?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  2 года назад

If you have poor hygiene and cleanliness practices and untested seeds, that is a concern. We sanitize our equipment, hands and buy only seeds that come from tested sources that check for pathogens like you mention. Therefore we eat them raw and feel safe doing so. Good cleanliness is the key.

Sanitize the seeds well before using them. Look up sanitize practices for crops like Wheatgrass. Basically you soak the seeds in a bleach solution for a short period of time before planting them

There's a reason they are called nutrients. Everything on Earth is made of of many different elements and compounds. And they all need nutrients to exist.

  • @logiclab1

Unless a nutrient test is done, there is no way to justify adding anything except clean water.

    • @activegrandpa

There is a lot to what you are saying. Sometimes too much nitrogen encourages diseases. For example, for those who use just ammonia sulfate on their lawns are the ones with fungi problems. Excessive Nitrogen can produce succulent growth more susceptible to diseases and insects.
