Why the Porsche 991.1 is the Best 911

  • The Porsche 991.1 is quite a car and although many don't like the electronic power steering and that it is more of a GT car than past 911s, it is quite a drive. It is more powerful, faster, has plenty of technology to help performance and great build quality.
    Of course the question is if it is worth the extra cost over a 996 or 997?

    I've owned one 964, one 993, one 996 and four 991.1s; I've also driven my brother's 997. To me, the 991.1 is, hands down, the best 911, especially the GTS, including the 50th anniversary edition (both of which I've owned).

      The 991.1 is quite a machine and it certainly has a special feel when you drive it. All 911s are great to drive, but the 991.1 offers modern levels of comfort and luxury that isn’t the same in the past models.

      how is the steering on the 991.1 compare to the 997 which everyone says has the best hydraulic steering feel? Is it as unresponsive and numb as people say? I've always wondered about this. I watch so many video of people saying the 991.1 is ruined by the steering. I find that hard to believe.

      I was considering the new flavor of M3/M4 for my 40th bday coming up and once I saw that they are going to incorporate a large touch-screen across the top of the dash from 2023 onward I started looking at Porsche, particularly the 991.1. After a ride and test drive I know this is what I want for sure ! I'm not saying that a touchscreen is what differentiates the two cars, simply, its what got me looking elsewhere.

    The 991.1 has a wider footprint than previous generations, but is also lighter than its predecessor the 997. Still, I’ve driven a 991.1 and it’s missing that fizzy feeling and even though it handles great, feels like a GT cruiser more than a canyon carver like 911’s of yore.

    • @OurRideLife
      @OurRideLife  2 года назад

      Fair point. I think the steering feel and narrow body does give a different feel to the older cars. The pre-991 was closer to a sports car and the 991 and forward are a bit more like GT cars. All are very good cars, but they offer very different driving experiences.

      Clearly never driven a 991, they are a bit bigger but they still feel like a sports car. And certainly drive like one. The 996 is by far the least popular of all the 911’s and for good reason. Fried eggs, ugly interior and ropey engines. And whilst they are somewhat analog, they’re nothing like an air cooled either. It’d be the last gen id pick.

      ‘Best’ is subjective. Its a better performer, and higher quality over its predecessors. But for me a 911 or any sports car is foremost about engagement. Ive owned the old air cooled, and driven all up to the 991. My favourite is the happy mix of engagement, looks, quality, size and performance 997 for me.

    But the 997.1 is the best looking. If I had money to blow it'd be either a 997.1 with custom lights, a 991.2 or 992 interior, and the 700hp AWD powertrain package, or a 964 with 996+ suspension, custom lights, semi-stripped but "plush" race style interior, and the 500hp GT3 NA powertrain with a 6 or 7-speed manual and RWD only. I would likely do the 997 with a center driver's seat and redone rear seats that would allow passengers to actually fit headroom-wise, while also taking advantage of the legroom since there wouldn't be other occupants directly in front of them, anymore. The 964 would become a true 2-seater with the rears deleted for storage space I guess.

    • @OurRideLife

      It certainly is a great car. Once I finish the series on the 911 generations, I’ll have to do one on reasons why each generation of the Boxster and Cayman are the best.

    • @mrh6577
      @mrh6577 3 года назад

      The Boxster/Cayman is different from the 911 so I’m unsure why the comparison? This discussion normally surfaces from Boxster or Cayman owners trying to prove they’ve got better value for money or trying to justify their buy. Truth is many Boxster owners purchased there cars because they either couldn’t afford the 911 or they just didn’t want to pay the money. But really deep down the 911 is what they really want.
      Please don’t compare the two, it’s mid engine Vs rear engine, 4 seats Vs 2 and generally significantly less power, the 911 has that originality and history which the Boxster or Cayman just doesn’t have, it will always lag behind the 911 history. Just treat them as 2 great cars by the same brand. Review them in there own rights.
      If you’re wondering I have a 911 997.1. My preference is the Cayman 981 as I prefer the shape and the 2 seater sports car feel. Once the 911 goes I probably will buy a Cayman but I really would like a GTS.
