  • Critics Jesse Green, Linda Winer and Elisabeth Vincentelli review the first half of the 2016-2017 theater season, including new musicals "Dear Evan Hansen," "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812," "The Band's Visit" at the Atlantic Theater Company, The New Group's revival of "Sweet Charity" starring Sutton Foster, Anna Deavere Smith's "Notes from the Field," "Sweat" by Lynn Nottage and "The Gabriels - Election Year in the Life of One Family" plays at the Public Theater.
Plus, Bryce Pinkham and Lora Lee Gayer from Holiday Inn bring us a "White Christmas," accompanied on piano by Justin Hornback
    Taped: 12-09-16
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

Why did NYT fire Isherwood? They hint it was "payola."

Jesse Green is my favorite critic. If he likes it I will hate it. Praise fun home to the moon. Ten year old girl lusting after a butch lesbian. Hated something Rotten the cleverest most fun show of the year. Praised Band's Visit which had music like strangling a cat. Dismissed American in Paris. He makes my choices clear

Considering Elizabeth's job is to review and express her thoughts - it's sometimes a little frustrating to see her on the panel. She throws out these scathing comments and rarely does well to substantiate her thoughts. I mean most of the things she talks about, I've not seen, so she might be making sense, but it's hard to know as she seems to repeat herself and not develop her line of thought .

Her reviews are quite good. These are speed thoughts. There's so many shows to cover and multiple people give their thoughts. Of course she and the others won't go through deep detail to explain what they liked and hated about each show.
