  • John Lahr discusses the life and work of playwright Tennessee Williams, the subject of "The New Yorker" critic’s great new biography, "Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of The Flesh."
    Taped: 09-26-14
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

I read Lahr's biography on Williams a short while back and it was one of the best books I've ever read. Period. Regardless of subject or genre. An amazing document.

Enormously insightful and informative interview by William's Biographer and critical explicator extraordinaire, John Lahr. Lahr, a great writer, speaks in prose that is as rich and abundant in meaning as is his writing...not to be missed!!!

Superb show, thanks to Lahr. Susan is smart. Riedel is superficial.

Williams' short stories are vital. In general, expanded on and more explored, they were the genesis for his plays. As one commentator noted, where is the discussion for these? My response: I don't know.

What they miss here is TW's short stories - the plays are all there.

"Gnädiges Fräulein", "Kirche, Küche, Kinder", "The day on which a man dies", "The one execption"... these are the things. Maybe you have to be European to see this.

Does Lahr offer any new insights to Williams or is it just more of the litany of misery?

It's an excellent book. I don't think it's possibly to escape what you call "the litany of misery" when it comes to Williams, but Lahr makes an excellent case, as he does in this interview, for a lot of the lesser-known play, even the ones that were not well received after Tennessee's heyday with Kazan.

Offers plenty of gossip, very few new insights. But many beautiful photographs.

He was quoting Williams. That is what Williams said she did.

No, he is telling the truth, her father was a preacher and she was controlling and all sex was bad according to her.

I saw an interview where Tennessee said this himself when describing his mother.

I find Lahr's comment that she "turned both her sons gay" to be both ignorant and offensive. What a stupid comment by someone who should know better.

+BottleConcreteBlond That's from a letter Tennessee wrote to Kazan after his mother died, not an insight of Lahr's.
