  • As I got further into producing this video I realized just how much information there is related to producing your own aerial maps. I touch on this from a high-level, but plan on doing a more in-depth series of videos soon.
    Here are the aerial maps from the video that I'll be updating with new layers as I produce them from my UAV:
    bit.ly/1w9DumJ
    Here are the GoPro photos, telemetry log, and Pix4D output from my flight that day:
    bit.ly/1F0lb9I
    GoPro Hero 3+:
    amzn.to/1fLgQKU
    Be sure to check out Pix4D:
    bit.ly/1wL9HRi
    Here's a link to QGIS:
    bit.ly/1sKJsLz
    and finally here's a link to gdal2tiles that I use to create the map tiles to be overlaid on Google Maps:
    bit.ly/1rdjzPz
    I hope this is useful information. Please feel free to post any questions or comments below.
    Thanks for watching!

    When I first got into arial photography, mapping was what I was really interested in. The complexity and time involvement was off putting to me with the kids and job. I stayed on the fpv side of things and migrated into long range as well as mini wing racing (mini quads are cool but mini wings are a blast!) but you have absolutely re sparked my interest in trying this again. Perhaps the downward facing port on my Penguin with my hero3+ B.E. Would be a nice start. Did you not have your hero mounted on your gimbal when you were mapping with that? And once again thank you for all you do Dennis you are an inspiration!!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      eric deherrera I know what you mean. I can't the number of hours I've spent messing around with aerial mapping. There are so many components that I don't think people realize everything involved. I've never flown a mini-wing, the smallest I have is a 32" TuffWing but it's super fun to fly. Yeah I totally think you should experiment with the GP3+ in your Penguin. I used to fly with my Canon in the Penguin and got pretty good results. I've found that the delta wing has worked better for me with APM and Pixhawk. When I mounted the GP3+ in the wing I did not use a gimbal. Pix4D does a great job of fixing any projection issues. Pretty amazing software, but lots of trial and error. I appreciate the kind words. Just trying to share everything I learn about this amazing field. Take care.

    Thank you for sharing, again! One thing I noticed with a wide angle lens (like the GoPro) vs a Point and Shoot camera lens (ie SX260) in regards to creating 3D models is that the Gopro is able to get the side and underneath "over hangs" more. I also noticed that the GoPro seems to capture more details, especially things like power lines. I didn't realize Pix4D had a free version until visiting the site from your video.

    Hi Dennis, Thx. I have the same SX260 (with CHDK for time-lapse) and your Gopro 3+. Will appriciate photos of how did you attach it to wing, and also the Gopro with the cutout.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      David Behr Here is a photo of how I have it mounted in the wing.
      www.dropbox.com/s/xk7vo6oryq3k33l/2014-11-04%2011.34.59.jpg?dl=0
      I had to 3D print that light blue plate because previously I made a huge cutout for my downward facing gimbal (still trying to work that out). If I hadn't been messing with the gimbal I would have just done a circular cutout to put the lens through. I used kyosho zeal to reduce any vibration as well as raise the camera up since the lens extends out a good bit. Hope that helps.

    Have you considered using ground control points that would help you better calibrate the geo coordinates?
    Geo referencing those ground points with a survey grade gps receiver would increase the overall project's output accuracy.

      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Tartalo33 Thanks for the suggestion. I've totally thought about that but don't have a good receiver to do this with. I have put GCPs down just to see how they look in my imagery, but have not done any highly-accurate georeferencing. I hope to do some testing of that in the future. I have a friend that has a survey grade receiver.

    Another really great video. You have a gift of breaking very complicated functions into easy to follow outlines. Thank you! One question, do you think this would be feasible using a GoPro Hero 3 on a downward facing gimbal mounted on a quad-type vehicle? I have a functional airtime of about 13 minutes currently. I think it would be a useful tool, but I want to make sure it would work before I start spending all the time you have!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      tpalshadow Thanks so much for the feedback! It should be feasible to remove the GoPro lens distortion with both Pix4D and PhotoScan Pro. I mentioned in my most recent video about PhotoScan that if you have imagery I'll be glad to process it for you. But it must be that the imagery will not be used for commercial purposes. Watch the video and if you're interested shoot me a Dropbox link to db at unmannedairlines dot com. Take care.

Can I email you? Tks

  • @walterkjn
    @walterkjn 9 лет назад

    Hi Dennis,
    Rather try and fly your mission with a cross wind, the processing accuracy is better because you end up with a "Wishbone" effect on your overlap.
    Also give AGISOFT PHOTOSCAN a try, processing has a easy workflow and great accuracy (sub 68mm flying at 600m agl)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Walter Kojetin Thanks for the tip. I had never thought about this "wishbone" effect. Can you point me to any documentation about it? I've used Photoscan Standard as I can't afford Professional, but have had some could results with it. Maybe I can get them to sell me the educational edition :)

  • @ibsn87
    @ibsn87 8 лет назад +1

    Wow, this is amazing! You have put so much time into this video and it has me excited to do this project for my friend!
    2 questions;
    1. Can I just fly my drone around the target area in a rough grid pattern with the GoPro taking photos every 5 seconds from take off?
    2. Do you have to pay the massive fee to access pix4d or is there a more limited version you have used?
    Cheers!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 лет назад

      +ibsn87 1. It depends on your flight speed. Taking pictures every 5 seconds may not be fast enough unless you're flying a multirotor and it's going slow enough. If you're flying a fixed wing then you'll most likely need to take photos on a faster interval. You may find that GPS distance based triggering is better.
      2. There are options like Photoscan, OpenDroneMap, and others I would recommend looking into. Also, check out www.mapsmadeeasy.com

      Keith Rolston I've never heard of EOS systems. Will definitely have to check them out. Pix4D recently announced a light version of their software called Discovery. Very good videos Dennis... I'm planning to build my fisrt plane and don't know which autopiltot (clone) to choose: Pixhawk or APM. Wich is better in your opinion for mapping with canon cameras? My only experience is with Nazas and multis...Thanks from Argentina

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Max P. I think you can't go wrong with either. I've had successful mapping missions with both. I don't know about the clones though so make sure to do your research. If you do plan on triggering your camera from APM or Pixhawk based on GPS distance it's generally easier with APM because you won't need to step up the voltage like you need to do with Pixhawk. You can make your own cable or purchase one. With APM the standard USB cable will work. I have a couple of videos that talk about this. Thanks for watching and good luck.

    You can do remote shutter over the gopro bus port - there are a few premade options, but I think making one with a bus port breakout and some documentation available online would be pretty easy. When you use your normal camera, do you pull the gps info from the pixhawk, or are you strictly using the built in gps available on the camera?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Zapf Thanks for the tip on GoPro. I have a breakout board and messed with a button to trigger the shutter. Would be interesting to make it remote. Regarding your question about geotagging photos I've done it both ways. Here is a video I did that shows how to geotag with Mission Planner:
      ruclips.net/video/ok9bpmUuQnM/видео.html
      and I've also let my Canon SX260 HS geotag them automatically, which simplifies things a bit. This is the one:
      amzn.to/1zRy7v1
      Hope this helps and good luck.

    • @zaplocked

      Dennis Baldwin
      I think anything you can do with a physical button press can be replicated with a relay, similar to how it works with chdk - you honestly could probably wire it in an identical manner to your pixhawk / apm and it would work. I've simulated physical button presses with a raspberry pi in another application before (a 3DS), and it worked great.
      I have a canon powershot s100, and am starting out doing this with an extra Phantom 2 I have - it will do the automatic remote servo stuff (which I can convert into something chdk will like), but I'm not sure how easy it is to pull gps data from DJI's ground station / mission planner, which was why I was inquiring about the accuracy of the built in canon gps vs whats available on the flight controller.

      Renato Jorge Yes it can be done with the X8, but you'll cover less area than you could with a flying wing. Regarding quality I'll see if I can do a follow-up with my NEX-5 but there is a simple calculator you can use to determine the GSD if you know your camera's sensor size:

    • @georgitushev
      @georgitushev 9 лет назад

      Dennis Baldwin Not so hard, little scary. There's many videos how to do it. The most difficult part for me was to focus it correctly and fix it. The lens is little loos in the housing.

    Hi Dennis, can the APM be used for mapping projects too? How did you get to trigger the camera or was it set to take pictures at intervals? I'd greatly appreciate your help on setting up a one. Thanks so much for sharing.

    I've been reading about Aerial Mapping for hours today after seeing your video the other day, and it's very interesting video as all other videos i've seen by you. I've downloaded the Pix4D, but have no other camera to try with other than my Sony AS15 at the moment. Do you know the difference between the 3DR Canon SX260 Firmware do as the original doesn't do? (Canon SX260 with custom 3DR EAI software)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад +1

      Jørn Ramnæs I'm assuming the 3DR firmware may just be a port of CHDK or a custom script. I can't imagine them reinventing the wheel when such a great firmware solution exists. CHDK does things that the default firmware doesn't like provides an intervalometer function through custom scripts. You can also trigger the shutter via USB signal. Plus lots of other stuff available through scripting. Stuff that's important to have for UAV aerial photography that you can't do without it. Glad you're interested in this stuff. Lots of exciting possibilities. Thanks for watching.

      Dennis Baldwin Dennis, is there any forums on Aerial Mapping you can recommend for reading and learning? I love flying and after reading about this i want to learn more. I can see why you made the downward gimbal for your camera. i had another winter project(Tarot 680PRO), now it seems like i've got me another one to.

      Thanks for the feedback on the videos. I appreciate you following along. If you're talking about displaying maps like this online:
      www.unmannedairlines.com/dev/tiger_stadium/
      Then that is done via Photoscan, gdal2tiles, and then uploaded to my server and overlaid on Google Maps. I don't use KMLs for this type of work. Hope this helps and in the future I'll be happy to do a more descriptive video of the process.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 лет назад

      +BISWAJIT BEHERA Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I don't know of a way to trigger the GoPro with Pixhawk (or any external cable for that matter). The only way I know to do this is with the built-in intervalometer. Not the best approach, but it works if you're not flying too fast.

    How i can see the estimated flight time ? I can't found on Mission Planer, only in DroidPlaner. Thank you for video !

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      ***** Good question. I'm not sure where to find this but will look into it. If you're planning a survey grid mission it will give you an estimate of how much time the mission will take based on speed. But that doesn't incorporate any realtime data such as battery size, voltage, etc. I'll see what I can find out. This would be useful to have.

    • @AlamDias
      @AlamDias 9 лет назад

      Dennis Baldwin I found. When you create a POLYGON on mission planer, and ADD a SURVEY AREA (pop-up a new windows do modify settings etc...) ... they show the estimated time, meters , number os pictures etc...

      Thank you- this is an area of great interest to our group Shenandoah Drones- I have a personal interest for some local friends as well- all agricultural based uses- I think a multirotor will handle their needs for weed maintenance as they would want real time downlinks- but the ability to take those flights and compile them over a season definitely has value and use, so with this software and flight controller I can see lots of applications even on the most basic and simplistic level for small to moderate farms.
