This was as close to Broadway performance as many of us would ever see. Fabulous fun.

Although Jack Soo is (obviously) not the focus of the song, he registers as strongly in the spoken scene as Nancy Kwan does with her singing. WHAT a delightful actor he was! One of his "Barney Miller" co-stars said of him after his death: "Jack was the kind of man who always shows up on time, works hard, and is thoroughly warm and friendly, but who never talks about himself. Then you find out one day by accident that he won an array of medals for courage under fire in wartime."

Terrific Jack Soo plays Sammy Fong, owner of the Celestial Gardens. Here we see him, years before his great work in the cast of Barney Miller...Already the comedy chops were there....

Fan Tan Fanny was leaving her man,
Fan Tan Fanny kept waving her fan,
Said "Goodbye, Danny, you two-timing Dan,
Some other man loves your little Fanny, Bye Bye!"
In the ice box, you'll find in a can
Some leftovers of Moo Goo Gai Pan.
Fan Tan Fanny has found a new guy.
His name is Manny, He's good for Fanny,
    So goodbye Danny, Goodbye!
Bye bye! Bye bye! Bye bye!

This is the first time I've seen the flower drum song, since 1961 very good musical, brings back memories the guy that plays Sammy, I'm sure it's again Sammy Fong. I think it was.

It was Jack Soo and unfortunately, he died some years ago, in 1979. He was also played Nick Yemana on Barney Miller .

"Forbidden City USA" describes how "Flower Drum Song" was inspired by how a Charles Lo had nightclubs along the Pacific Coast.

The Goodbye, Danny, you two-timing Dan line probably meant that Danny was cheating on Fan Tan Fannie which was probably why she was leaving him.

My 's dad's brother who designed a piloted Lunar Lander for Grumman of New York so he ran off with a starlet blonde type while his first wife ran off with an East Asian guy of Seattle named Gaiton.

We should remember how East Asian immigrants called "Coolies" built America's West Coast just as Europeans immigrants called "Hunkies" and or "Guidos" built America's East Coast.

When out west on vacation I saw an East Asian using a kid's wagon to collect scrap metal off California railroad tracks along with an Alberta hotel's East Asian chamber maid and of course my grandmother of East European heritage used to talk about how East European immigrants were mistreated to work hazards of coal due to their Mongolian Chinese heritage.

I hate it when they dub voices - just cast the real singer, for Pete's sake!!

    • @WinstonBribach
      @WinstonBribach 7 лет назад +4

If I'm not mistaken, the singer used to dub Nancy Kwan was white, so casting her would not have worked since the role is Chinese-American. I'm sure they could've found a good Chinese-American singer, but not one with a box-office draw like Kwan (who was in the public eye at the time).

peasblossom1973 I agree. Pat Suzuki was the Broadway star. Cute and could sing really well. Nancy was English and Chinese. Very screen pretty. Once again Hollywood screwed the stage actress out of a key role. Pat was Japanese.

@@carolinecorman2240 Pat was actually pregnant at the time so she couldn't do the movie, wish she was in the movie.

Better dubbing, than hearing the stars actual voice in most cases , That Judy movie last year should have been dubbed for sure!

Nancy has said she was okay with being dubbed. They asked if she could sing. She said something along the lines of being an okay singer, but if the producers felt she needed to be dubbed then she was fine with them doing so.
