Awesome video (as always) Heather! Solid investigation on the SL60w + gel comparison, this is great to know what power the SZ150r RGB is outputting at!
Bought the godox Bowens mount RGB light SL300R due to SZ150R being sold out. And after watching your video about the projection adaptor being compatible with not only Godox bowens mounts, but, nearly all other bowens mount brands. To my surprise the projection adapter DOES NOT fit on the SL300R RGB LED light!
Been struggling with purchasing some lights as new beginner in studio interviews. You've given me some pointers. It's not about how expensive the lights are, but what I need them for. :-)
You make good points about the RGB channels not being as powerful as the CCT mode, however this is the standard when it comes to RGBWW lights in general, or even Bicolor for that matter; the aputure 300X has half the output of the 300D. Another thing to note is when measuring the lux ratings of the red, green and blue channels of an RGB light, the green channel has roughly 5x the output of the blue channel, and the red channel has about 3x the output of the blue channel. Blue is always the lowest in output out of the 3 colours due to the nature of of the wave lengths. So whilst the output of this light in blue may be similar to the gelled sl60w, the red and green channels should be far brighter.
Love your channel, do you have a video on how to gel a cob light? I've seen some crazy things on set where people are putting gels right next to the chip 😳
Thanks! And there's many ways depending on if you're using a modifier or not. But alot of folks just clamp or tape it over the reflector dish, leaving some room for air flow of course. But you can only do that with lights that are under 300w otherwise you risk melting the gel. In that case you need to extend it further from the light.
To me it is not worth it just for RGB. To be honest Godox offer cheap RGB panels to give that effect. I would rather have a VL150 or two!! But i did like the adjustable beam angle though. I Think that could be very useful. I would like that feature to spil into their other cob’s Yeah and the fan noise.... But great content ad always. Cheers
I think those RGB tube lights (Godox has TL -xxx) would work well for back lighting in this situation. This video helps to explain why they're so expensive... Thanks so much!!
great video thank you very much. I do have a question. As a newbie here, what would you advice as a first keylight ? I do have a good amount of money to spend, budget is not really a limitation. Apurture 120d Mark II ? How many of them do I need ? 2 ? And then a Godox SZ150R is a good option as a fill light or hair light right ? thank you!
It depends on what you are shooting. But I'd say you'd want at least two lights - a powerful keylight and a good back light. 100w or higher for key light and 60w or higher for backlight I personally like Godox's UL150 for a good, bright, and silent key light (it has no fans) Then I like Godox's also totally silent ML60 or ML60bi lights for a back light The SZ150R is great when you want colors in a light, but it might not be very often you use those things unless you shoot alot of indie work, music videos, or other colored light situations.
Hello there, I'm planing to buy my first light setup for shooting cinematic footage. I'm thinkng about buying three vl 150 lights. Is this something you recommends? Or should I buy on vl 150 for key light, led panel for fill and bicolor for back light?
If recommend a vl150 for a keylight and then grab a 60w cob for a backlight. You could grab a panel if you often are doing fill lighting or need to light backdrops and spaces
The fan noise is the entire reason I am returning two Godox lights currently, seems to be one of there biggest issues overall. Picked up some Neewer lights, and so far the issue I have with those (660 Pro) is for my small space I cant dim them enough 1% is like 15%. Wish I could find a good sale on Amaran lights. The search continues.
A reality of RGB lights is that the total power is distributed to the 3 individual colors. So a 150w RGB light has 50w for red, 50w for green, 50w for blue. So the reduced output is to be expected. The other thing is this is not a true bi-color light meaning it does not have cool white and warm white LED elements in its COB array which would be called RGBWWW or RGBWCWW (I think). Having checked out the manual, the light supports hardwired DMX via 2 RJ-45 ports on the side under a cover. But they do not provide any RJ-45 to XLR cables or a wiring diagram for the cables in the manual. Question: does the light act as a WiFi access point for its app. Meaning on your smart phone you have to disconnect from your normal WiFi access point and connect to the access point built into the light? This is a major failing of many of the video light apps on the market.
Those are some great points, thanks for sharing. To answer your question about the Wi-Fi access point, no it does not. It connects to the light via Bluetooth and does not rely on Wi-Fi to operate the app or the light.
Thank you so much! I was doing a shoot and noticed I needed a stronger light with effects. This one was on my list, but now I just want to wait to see if there’s an update for it and look for other options for the time being. Thank you again for the review. :)

Yes, it is even (no splotching or anything like that). The mixing dome on the front of the light ensures there is no weird patterning with the color mixing or anything like that.

Watched your video... nope, go with the AD200Pro and keep wrestling with the gels. Thanks for helping me toward a decision. 👏
I want to buy my first light. I want to do some RGB portraight photography. can you please explain difference between RGB tubelight, RGB stick light and RGB COB light and their use scenarios? Local shopkeepers here don't know shit and they suck at customer service.
The benefit of a COB light is for hard light purposes and more control ( you can do more modifiers on it, ive got a whole video on modifiers for COB lights). A tube light is best for lighting scenarios due to it's size and shape, where a COB light can be modified and look great on human or animal subjects. A COB light is hard light, like a tube light, but can be modified into a soft light. A tube light could be as well, but not typically done. If you're doing portrait work, I'd imagine you'd use the COB for a key light and the tube light would make a good kicker light (edge light, or hair light).
Hi, I am thinking to buy this light, but I didnt find anywhere if its good choice for hard light product photography. I am not sure coz of milky led bulb. What dou ou think? Does the milky bulb works as a softbox? Or its possible to make with this light hard light looking? Thank you for your help
Thanks for an honest review, decided to take 2 FV150 instead of 1 of these and a bunch of gels. Wish you luck and tons of likes, you received my already!
I find the fan noise argument to be completely irrelevant for RUclips content creation. People who are basically unaware of equipment specs will never ever notice unless you set-up the mic ridiculously close to the light stand. I think this light is amazing value for everything that it does.
Great video ! Do you this light would be strong enough to use it as a « on demand » background color for still photography ? I would love to have an option to be able to change the backdrop color on the go. Have you done some test ? Thank you !!
I haven't tested it for photography no, but I do feel it could work pretty well. If you want to flood a background with color, I'd recommend a panel light more for that. The amaran p60c (I've got a review on it) is really quite powerful at a small transportable size. Might take a look into it
According to the Gaffer & Gear channel, the the projection kit on Godox bowens lights lose a lot of output, so much so that the S30 is brighter than an SL200WII with the projection kit on each. Just my two cents as to how weak this light was with the projection kit.
Great in-depth review of a light I'm considering, but will hold off on after that SL-60w comparison. I never find your videos too long, good content tends to make time fly.
Well done! I guess the steps in the fall-off color gradients (is this the correct term in English?) are due to codec limitations while recording and youtube compression?
I just bought one of these. The light is completely green. I compared to a velvet studio4 and a Litepanels 1x1 bi-color and this Godox light is completely green, even with magenta tint correction, that makes it completely useless. Is this normal? Or is there something wrong with my light?
@@FellowFilmmaker okay thanks. If you compare with other godox daylight lights please let me know what you find? I just tested the light in natural daylight and it looked better but it still needs some magenta correction. I think my other lights might be a little bit too magenta. But they still feel more correct to my eyes. Some tech reviewer online tested this light with a spectrometer and found that the 5600k setting actually is 5400k so that's definitely a bit green. He said that the 3200k setting is a lot more accurate at 3224k. So I guess I need to get som minus green filters from rosco to fix this problem. Thanks for your feedback.

Don’t know what to think of that green magenta correction feature...Curtis says it does nothing
Yeah, it's a toss of preference I suppose. I think it could be stronger in the higher numbers of the shift (say 40-50) but I like the micro adjustments in the lower numbers of the shift.
Currently I'm not aware of a totally silent RGB Cob light. So if noise isn't the biggest issue then this one is perfectly fine. If it is, then you're better off buying a quiet or silent light ( I've got videos on those here on the channel) and using gels with them to get whatever color you want. A light that is really powerful and has control over fan noise (which still effects output) is the Prolycht Orion 300 FS (just did a video on the channel on it).
Super useful video and very concise, bummer on the sacrifice in power once flipped to RGB, Rotolights new RGB range Aeos 2/Neo 3 are more powerful and mobile (light/battery operated) but fan noise and modifing it are issues I've experienced. Would they be something you would review as you come across as trust worthy and honest as a reviewer.
If you have Godox's ear, please ask them for a firelight preset with at least 3 different power outputs. Bonfire, Fire Place and Candle... Each time I need something like this, I'm using Gels and having to pay a Grip to reflect and shade light source to create the "flicker". I don't understand why not one manufacturer has thought of this as a preset scene... Great vid by the way, at the moment I'm using UL150 as a keyand some cheap RGB Panels for ambient fill/backlight and wondering if this might be better in that capicity as it'll be easier to shape that the panels
That's actually a really great idea! I'll be sure to mention it to them! They seem to at least listen to the input I give, I don't know if they act off it yet.
@@FellowFilmmaker actually I've been reading through the specs since watching your video and it looks like they've already covered my needs... I'll be interested to see how the effect looks and whether or not it sells the scene against a low light environment... At last a light manufacturer that has noticed this huge gap in lighting effects.
Great review! What would you recommend for someone who is frustrated with flash and wants his first key light for portraits? I have lots of Bowens modifiers
Well there are loads of options out there of course. It can depend on what you're shooting. But if you want something that is both continuous and flash, there is the Godox FV150. If you want a good all around light the Godox UL150 is also good. If you need cheap and you have control over your situation then Amarn 100d is also good.
You've mentioned fan noise on lights several times now, and I'm curious as to why removing fan noise in post is not considered a viable option? Adobe Audition is phenomenal at removing room noise, specific frequencies, etc. Is this just to save you time in the edit or is there another reason that you opt not to remove fan noise? Just curious! Great vid!
Good point. I suppose for me, and many people, it's a part of the puzzle I don't want to have to deal with. Just one less thing to worry about really. :D I feel when I'm doing everything myself already, it's nice if I can remove one more thing off the list. :D Hope that makes sense. Also, if it means anything, I've actually not used Adobe Audition. Probably cuz I don't use adobe anything. :p
@@FellowFilmmaker Makes perfect sense. I did audio engineering before I got into filmmaking, so I guess I’ve carried over all those tricks and skills. And good for you for not getting trapped in the Adobe ecosystem! I’ll be trapped there until the end of time!
It would depend on on budget, needs, space size, how many subjects/talents are being lit, etc. In general most news studios choose panel lights with diffusors on them. High quality ones are the standard like Arri. Other brands that are good are Aputure and Lupo
I wanted to say thanks for your work. Thanks to you I started building my light set up for my work related videos with a couple of vl150s.
Right, the projection kit does suck some serious output. Which is sad, since the effect it great
Thank you, thank you again, I've never found a so complete review. You've got one more subscribed
Love hearing that! Welcome to the channel 😁👋🏼
I'm waiting for goducks to make a version of this light only at 120w
Slightly cheaper when it's slightly quieter
Interesting
Is it compatible with the godox sa17 ?
Thanks for the honesty on the RGB light output. I better stick with gels and buy SL200w mark2 instead
Glad I could help :D
Great in-depth review of a light I'm considering, but will hold off on after that SL-60w comparison. I never find your videos too long, good content tends to make time fly.
Happy to hear the time flies! Thanks for watching and commenting
hello, I would like to know if I can make this pendant lamp Godox VSA-26K spotlight?
Im not sure I understand the question
Best Review on this light
Thanks!
Very good review. I particularly appreciate your summation at the end. Very practical and straightforward. Thanks for the 411.
Thanks for watching! And glad you enjoyed it :D
Watching this review I think Rotolight should definitely send you that new Titan X1 light being reviewed on several YT channels as well :-)
That would be cool :) I've seen a few creators I know get it, it looks pretty epic... also costly, but hey! :P
Well done! I guess the steps in the fall-off color gradients (is this the correct term in English?) are due to codec limitations while recording and youtube compression?
Yes, sadly😞
Much better review than what I see a lot on you tube: "Here's the item in the box and it looks really good."
Haha, I see those and get so annoyed, it's one reason I started the channel :D
I just bought one of these. The light is completely green. I compared to a velvet studio4 and a Litepanels 1x1 bi-color and this Godox light is completely green, even with magenta tint correction, that makes it completely useless. Is this normal? Or is there something wrong with my light?
If i recall it did seem to run a bit green for me as well. Might be how these lights are?
Its been awhile since i pulled mine out
@@FellowFilmmaker okay thanks.
Great video ...Sokani x60 80w rgb light...you can make a review on that
I'll keep it in mind, thanks!
Can you review the Godox SZ300R? and compare it with the Godox SZ150R?
Excellent review.
Thank you kindly!
Wonderful! Thanks for reviewing. Glad i didn't buy this as my first light. Keep up the great work!
Glad I could help!
So I tried to put my projector unit on the SZ150r and its not fitting. Am I missing something?
Make sure your zoom is all the way retracted
Some folks have had issues, while other do not. Some remove a piece inside the adapter to make it work
Thank you for the review! Any gel recommendations?
I just have some cheap colored ones off amazon, nothing special. If you want to be serious then Rosco and Lee gels are the professional way to go
Thanks Gerald's sister! 🤣
Seriously though, really compitant review 👍
😁Haha, thanks! :D
Hello fellow filmmaker, please make a review about godox SZ150Bi 🙏
We'll have to see what happens!
What light do you recommend instead that is not doing noise?
Currently I'm not aware of a totally silent RGB Cob light. So if noise isn't the biggest issue then this one is perfectly fine. If it is, then you're better off buying a quiet or silent light ( I've got videos on those here on the channel) and using gels with them to get whatever color you want. A light that is really powerful and has control over fan noise (which still effects output) is the Prolycht Orion 300 FS (just did a video on the channel on it).
re: waveform comparison: did you account for the highlight reflection on the gel?
I don't think I did... it's been awhile
Thanks for the info 😁
You bet!
I'm not taking on too many reviews at the moment, so its not likely I'll do those ones any time soon
@@FellowFilmmaker Understood, thanks for coming back to me.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks so much for responding! I'll research those options and make the best choice I can. Thanks!
Perfect.
:D
oh my this is secret reveal!! the RGB is 60w power only
When in silent mode, yes
Hah yesss, didnt want more monthly payments. 😂
Clever test you did there. Thanks for sharing this review!
Thanks for watching!
Loving your work on this review! Carry out this move! From a french filmmaker
Thank you very much! :D And hello from me to you :D
Great video!
Thanks!
Amazing videoo!!! You covered every thought one could have!
Happy to hear that! :D
Which light will be best as key light in the news studio, kindly suggest.
It would depend on on budget, needs, space size, how many subjects/talents are being lit, etc.
In general most news studios choose panel lights with diffusors on them. High quality ones are the standard like Arri. Other brands that are good are Aputure and Lupo
Awesome video! Super well-produced and very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it! And happy to hear it was helpful :D
Are you going to review godox tl60 tubelight?
I wasn't planning on it, at least right now.
I wanted to say thanks for your work. Thanks to you I started building my light set up for my work related videos with a couple of vl150s. Next step is to finally figure out color correction with a color checker that always gives me worse colours than default out of camera look. Also, love the washed out blacks and will try to replicate. I'm confident you have a great future here on RUclips.
Happy to hear I could be of some sorta help or inspiration! :D Lights are the biggest game changer in video, at least for me. Haha, well I'm glad you're a fan of the look, it happened by accident more or less
Can you review the Godox SZ300R?
Helpful thorough review. Thanks for this.
Glad it was helpful! :D
Can this be used as a flash strobe head or is it a continues light source?
Its a continuous light
I bought the projector attachment with the bowens adapter but won’t fit it on my SZ150r :(
It should.... Did you make sure the zoom was all the way in?
@@FellowFilmmaker Yeah I put it all the way to the back. The bowens mount still wouldn't click in. It kept hitting the bulb. Do I need to unscrew anything? I could upload a video of it
