Been struggling with purchasing some lights as new beginner in studio interviews. You've given me some pointers. It's not about how expensive the lights are, but what I need them for. :-)
Awesome video (as always) Heather! Solid investigation on the SL60w + gel comparison, this is great to know what power the SZ150r RGB is outputting at!
Love your channel, do you have a video on how to gel a cob light? I've seen some crazy things on set where people are putting gels right next to the chip 😳
Thanks! And there's many ways depending on if you're using a modifier or not. But alot of folks just clamp or tape it over the reflector dish, leaving some room for air flow of course. But you can only do that with lights that are under 300w otherwise you risk melting the gel. In that case you need to extend it further from the light.
I think those RGB tube lights (Godox has TL -xxx) would work well for back lighting in this situation. This video helps to explain why they're so expensive... Thanks so much!!
You make good points about the RGB channels not being as powerful as the CCT mode, however this is the standard when it comes to RGBWW lights in general, or even Bicolor for that matter; the aputure 300X has half the output of the 300D. Another thing to note is when measuring the lux ratings of the red, green and blue channels of an RGB light, the green channel has roughly 5x the output of the blue channel, and the red channel has about 3x the output of the blue channel. Blue is always the lowest in output out of the 3 colours due to the nature of of the wave lengths. So whilst the output of this light in blue may be similar to the gelled sl60w, the red and green channels should be far brighter.
such a great comparison between the gelled vs led outputs. you just saved me $560 because I already have gels and a strong enough light. Thanks for the therapy and the savings!
Thanks for an honest review, decided to take 2 FV150 instead of 1 of these and a bunch of gels. Wish you luck and tons of likes, you received my already!
Stumbled on your channel researching the SZ150. Thanks for the straight forward explanation especially the con of it being just a 60W light on RGB! Subbed!
Thank you so much! I was doing a shoot and noticed I needed a stronger light with effects. This one was on my list, but now I just want to wait to see if there’s an update for it and look for other options for the time being. Thank you again for the review. :)
Great in-depth review of a light I'm considering, but will hold off on after that SL-60w comparison. I never find your videos too long, good content tends to make time fly.
The fan noise is the entire reason I am returning two Godox lights currently, seems to be one of there biggest issues overall. Picked up some Neewer lights, and so far the issue I have with those (660 Pro) is for my small space I cant dim them enough 1% is like 15%. Wish I could find a good sale on Amaran lights. The search continues.

Ahh, finally. A reviewer, you, who answered a hobbyist's (me) question: Will the SZ150R be your "First" light? "First" is in quotes as I take it you mean "First real" light. My style? Hobby indoor/outdoor photography, portrait gels, etc, but no interest in videos. With 2 Godox V860 II and the XPRO controller, I've been trying to figure out my next flash unit... My "First real" one. Easily portable, batt, more power, compatible with my Godox kit & XPRO-well, essentially your graphic @12:45. I kept thinking AD200Pro but wait... what about this new RGB SZ150R for only $100 over a fully loaded AD200Pro? Having watched many SZ150R videos, it was still a "maybe, why not" deal. Watched your video... nope, go with the AD200Pro and keep wrestling with the gels. Thanks for helping me toward a decision. 👏
I was literally googling the z150r and the sa17 projection unit separately to try and piece together research on how they might work together.... and then you ended up talking about both combined! The perfect video I needed for my research :)
@@alemattosbr we have to be honest gels take away many stops of light... you might be better of getting dedicated Rgb lights, such as neewer 660 rgb...
Bought the godox Bowens mount RGB light SL300R due to SZ150R being sold out. And after watching your video about the projection adaptor being compatible with not only Godox bowens mounts, but, nearly all other bowens mount brands. To my surprise the projection adapter DOES NOT fit on the SL300R RGB LED light!
I wanted to say thanks for your work. Thanks to you I started building my light set up for my work related videos with a couple of vl150s. Next step is to finally figure out color correction with a color checker that always gives me worse colours than default out of camera look. Also, love the washed out blacks and will try to replicate. I'm confident you have a great future here on RUclips.
Happy to hear I could be of some sorta help or inspiration! :D Lights are the biggest game changer in video, at least for me. Haha, well I'm glad you're a fan of the look, it happened by accident more or less
Just bought this light before seeing your review. Im still sticking with it. I don’t need the brightest lights available because I’m usually shooting in cramped spaces and usually i find myself trying to take away light...not add to it. . Having the flexibility to use color so quickly is awesome and innovative. Hopefully future firmware updates will improve the light. Great review!
Well done! I guess the steps in the fall-off color gradients (is this the correct term in English?) are due to codec limitations while recording and youtube compression?
@@FellowFilmmaker i have to thank you ! comparing outputs is sooo important and many just don't include that but that is so valuable information :) i watched a few reviews of it and yours answered all my questions :)
This was a really great review! There are definitely not too many reviews out so far for the the SZ series of lights. I actually came across a Sokani X60 (80W) RGB COB LED that I picked up for half the price of this for the RGB qualities and then just ended up getting the VL150 for a stronger light source when needed. PS - That smile at 8:51 under the red light is both creepy and funny at the same time. Something about a red light being cast just makes everything eerie LOL!!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm so glad I fount it!! I want to get my first light for dance videos and that I can use for interviews as well (if possible). Would you recommend the Godox SL60W? I have tried some LED panels and and found out some colors are not so accurate such as the orange color. I've been investigating other RGB lights options but after what you mentioned about the power output I rather use gels instead. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Yeah, if you want good orange colors, you'll want to use gels or you could look at the Prolycht Orion 300 (got a video on the channel here about it). A light I'd recommend is the Aputure 200d or Godox VL150 both would be a good fit for your needs.
I would be blown away if you could add in some real world example , modifiers , models and cars. . . What limitations it had and what it did well at. can it throw a glow thru a studio? is it weak at night outside? Things like that. Thanks for your content!
Heather, I like your videos (and *love* your voice, btw. - next to having a beautiful one, what mic and audio setup are you using?), but I'm just wondering whether your brightness comparison (SZ150R vs. SL60W + Gel) was slightly skewed. The specific color you used was looking quite "blue"; of course we didn't get to see the RGB values, but it looked pretty close to (0,0,255) to me. Now with that color, you would be guaranteed to use only 1/3 of the LEDs in that light, so its logical that maximum output would be 1/3 of total, or 50W. So why don't we go "pink" for a minute and try something like (252, 3, 252). As one can see from the values, this color would bring at least 2/3 RGB values up, and logically should also use 2/3rd of the LEDs in the light, meaning you should get close to a 100W color light source. Of course the choice of color is a creative one, not one of maximum light efficiency, but across the "useful color range", I would expect that on average about 50% of LED capacity could be used, bringing the light closer to a 75W, and that should probably be stronger/brighter than a gel'd 150W daylight..... Cheers from Germany.
Good points! Thanks for taking the time to comment that all. I'm sure it's not a flawless comparison. It was to help me, and others, better understand how this light is not the brightest light in RGB mode. For me, in the situation I was and am using it in, it is not as bright as what I'm getting with the alternative I showed in the video. I chose to include it and tried my best to show how what I was seeing with my physical eyes transferred into some sort of information that makes a bit of sense. I know it wasn't perfect, but it's what I had at the time to work with. Thanks again for the input!
Great review, with a wonderful real-world example of how you wanted to use the light. You really gave context to how useful (or not) the light would be. I too have been dazzled by bi-colour & RGB, but often the reality is that it is raw output we need. This feels like a rare mis-fire from Godox, who have been knocking it out of the park recently - the zoom function on this unit won’t even do anything if the reflector is removed! I AM interested in the forthcoming Godox S60 focusable light which will probably give your projection attachment even more output - despite being a lower wattage (and it shouldn’t get as hot). Maybe that might be a light to ask Godox to send you...
You've mentioned fan noise on lights several times now, and I'm curious as to why removing fan noise in post is not considered a viable option? Adobe Audition is phenomenal at removing room noise, specific frequencies, etc. Is this just to save you time in the edit or is there another reason that you opt not to remove fan noise? Just curious! Great vid!
Good point. I suppose for me, and many people, it's a part of the puzzle I don't want to have to deal with. Just one less thing to worry about really. :D I feel when I'm doing everything myself already, it's nice if I can remove one more thing off the list. :D Hope that makes sense. Also, if it means anything, I've actually not used Adobe Audition. Probably cuz I don't use adobe anything. :p
@@FellowFilmmaker Makes perfect sense. I did audio engineering before I got into filmmaking, so I guess I’ve carried over all those tricks and skills. And good for you for not getting trapped in the Adobe ecosystem! I’ll be trapped there until the end of time!
Hello Heather, I'd love to see a short video comparing Bowens reflectors/hyper-reflectors from even just the usual suspects (Aputure, Godox, Nanlite). Thank you!
Yes, it is even (no splotching or anything like that). The mixing dome on the front of the light ensures there is no weird patterning with the color mixing or anything like that.
For a good first keylight I'd say the Aputure 120dmkii is a good one and so is the Godox UL150. Ive used both many times and both are great. I love the UL150 due to its no fan function. I've got a comparison between the two lights here on the channel. Also, if you need alot of power, the Aputure 300dmkii is a favorite of mine. :D All are bowens mount I've mentioned and have battery option. Godox has a few in the 150w category, the VL and UL and SL series all are pretty good for the price you pay.
Wow! That was super useful and what a great point about RGB functioning at effectively 60W. I was about to hit buy and you just helped me realise why it would have been a bad decision. I am looking at a light mostly to light up behind me or may be as an accent light to highlight my hair or the dark side of my face.
Well if you don't need the light to be RGB there are lots of other great lights out there. If you want top of the line, I'd recommend Prolycht Orion 300, its a 300w RGB light
Great review! What would you recommend for someone who is frustrated with flash and wants his first key light for portraits? I have lots of Bowens modifiers
Well there are loads of options out there of course. It can depend on what you're shooting. But if you want something that is both continuous and flash, there is the Godox FV150. If you want a good all around light the Godox UL150 is also good. If you need cheap and you have control over your situation then Amarn 100d is also good.
I would love to see a video of you trying to do a fan replacement! Using an aftermarket fan with better bearing may reduce the noise to acceptable levels! 😁
Well that would certainly be interesting! I've considered doing a fan replacement but I'm just so busy with other things that it'd be a long ways off before I have time to do it.
@@FellowFilmmaker well, I'm planning on doing a video with a fan replacement on the amaran 200d (as soon as they become available) so it would be fun to see if that would solve the sl150 problem
Love your videos! Only one thing: The SZ wouldn't be 60-65w in RGB mode, it would be less than that because the SL60W has a gel which dims the light output
12:51 That's some sage advice! Hopefully the TL-60 tube lights have lesser cons than this, then it'd be ideal two get a 2-light kit for coloured lighting :D
great video thank you very much. I do have a question. As a newbie here, what would you advice as a first keylight ? I do have a good amount of money to spend, budget is not really a limitation. Apurture 120d Mark II ? How many of them do I need ? 2 ? And then a Godox SZ150R is a good option as a fill light or hair light right ? thank you!
It depends on what you are shooting. But I'd say you'd want at least two lights - a powerful keylight and a good back light. 100w or higher for key light and 60w or higher for backlight I personally like Godox's UL150 for a good, bright, and silent key light (it has no fans) Then I like Godox's also totally silent ML60 or ML60bi lights for a back light The SZ150R is great when you want colors in a light, but it might not be very often you use those things unless you shoot alot of indie work, music videos, or other colored light situations.
According to the Gaffer & Gear channel, the the projection kit on Godox bowens lights lose a lot of output, so much so that the S30 is brighter than an SL200WII with the projection kit on each. Just my two cents as to how weak this light was with the projection kit.
To me it is not worth it just for RGB. To be honest Godox offer cheap RGB panels to give that effect. I would rather have a VL150 or two!! But i did like the adjustable beam angle though. I Think that could be very useful. I would like that feature to spil into their other cob’s Yeah and the fan noise.... But great content ad always. Cheers
Hello there, I'm planing to buy my first light setup for shooting cinematic footage. I'm thinkng about buying three vl 150 lights. Is this something you recommends? Or should I buy on vl 150 for key light, led panel for fill and bicolor for back light?
If recommend a vl150 for a keylight and then grab a 60w cob for a backlight. You could grab a panel if you often are doing fill lighting or need to light backdrops and spaces
I just ordered the weeylite ninja 400 which is also bicolor not rgb. It was on sale on Amazon for $269. I wonder if you’ve heard of this? I'm excited to test it out.
Very helpful. Thank you! I've been looking for an affordable rgb fx light with decent output. Guess I should keep looking. Looks like an interesting fixture but a little overpriced for what it does.

Happy to hear it was helpful! I will have to look into that light, we shall see what happens ☺️ Thanks for watching and commenting
Watching this review I think Rotolight should definitely send you that new Titan X1 light being reviewed on several YT channels as well :-)
That would be cool :) I've seen a few creators I know get it, it looks pretty epic... also costly, but hey! :P
Thank you for the review! Any gel recommendations?
I just have some cheap colored ones off amazon, nothing special. If you want to be serious then Rosco and Lee gels are the professional way to go
Loving your work on this review! Carry out this move! From a french filmmaker
Thank you very much! :D And hello from me to you :D
Hah yesss, didnt want more monthly payments. 😂
But can you charge your phone from the USB port?? 🤣
Dang... they need to do that! If they had a v-mount battery option then it'd make perfect sense! Seriously, they should do that...
Hello Heather, I'd love to see a short video comparing Bowens reflectors/hyper-reflectors from even just the usual suspects (Aputure, Godox, Nanlite). Thank you!
Thanks for the idea, I can see what I can do :)
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks again, Heather!
Great video! If you point the light with a blue color at an angle do you get an even spread of light on the background?
Yes, it is even (no splotching or anything like that). The mixing dome on the front of the light ensures there is no weird patterning with the color mixing or anything like that.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you!
thanks for your work Heather!
You are so welcome! Thanks for dropping by and commenting
Great info - what do you recommend as a first key light? Battery feature and Bowen’s mount are important.
OH M Gee! Thank you for explaining. I really thought it was gonna be 150 watt thru and thru! you saved me.
I will buy the FV150.
Glad I could help!
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks so much for responding! I'll research those options and make the best choice I can. Thanks!
Excellent review.
Thank you kindly!
Truly a straight video, thank you very much.
Will buy my first light @ $140
Nice! Hope you enjoy the light you're getting :D
Cool! Hope it goes well :D
I did this with the quietest fan I could find for the SL150W and it was still unacceptable.
Great quality content! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Great job.
Happy to! Thanks for watching
Helpful thorough review. Thanks for this.
Glad it was helpful! :D
Glad you explained. At least I won’t even consider it right now.
Glad I could help :D
Another great review! Thanks for the breakdown!
Youre welcome☺️
Thanks Gerald's sister! 🤣
Seriously though, really compitant review 👍
😁Haha, thanks! :D
@FellowFilmmaker Magnificent analysis, brilliant discussions and very wise advises
Thank you :D
Nice video. Thanks! What difference there is between this and the Godox SZ200Bi Bi-color?
The difference is the 200bi is only bicolor, no RGB
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks, keep the great content!
Amazing video, thank you. Would you recommend using the VL-150 with a gel or this guy?
oh well, I guess don't ask the question before watching the end of the video :D)
Haha, that works too!
I think either is fine. Just depends on if you feel you need a brighter color, then the gel might be better.
Thanks Heather. Good review and real world advice - as ever!
Thanks for watching! :D
Love your videos! Only one thing: The SZ wouldn't be 60-65w in RGB mode, it would be less than that because the SL60W has a gel which dims the light output
Fair enough :D
New to your channel, love it, love the effort you put into your videos as well, great job.
Glad to have you here! And thank you, put loads of work into all :D
12:51 That's some sage advice! Hopefully the TL-60 tube lights have lesser cons than this, then it'd be ideal two get a 2-light kit for coloured lighting :D
I haven't yet tried those yet, so I don't know for sure, but lets hope :D
Very Helpful. Thanks. BTW: Do you happen to know if this Is this the same app that is used with the TL60 tubes?
It is!
Thanks for the info 😁
You bet!
Great balanced review 👍🏻
Thank you :) Happy to hear that
great video thank you very much.
100w or higher for key light
and 60w or higher for backlight
I personally like Godox's UL150 for a good, bright, and silent key light (it has no fans)
Then I like Godox's also totally silent ML60 or ML60bi lights for a back light
The SZ150R is great when you want colors in a light, but it might not be very often you use those things unless you shoot alot of indie work, music videos, or other colored light situations.
Really good advice and thank you for posting this video!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
Well... No batteries? I was expecting something like VL series... BTW, awesome review as usual!
Yeah, it is a bummer on the batteries. Glad you enjoyed the video all the same!
According to the Gaffer & Gear channel, the the projection kit on Godox bowens lights lose a lot of output, so much so that the S30 is brighter than an SL200WII with the projection kit on each. Just my two cents as to how weak this light was with the projection kit.
Right, the projection kit does suck some serious output. Which is sad, since the effect it great
Wonderful! Thanks for reviewing. Glad i didn't buy this as my first light. Keep up the great work!
Glad I could help!
very detailed, thanks! i will subscribe!
Awesome, thank you!
Best Review on this light
Thanks!
Amazing videoo!!! You covered every thought one could have!
Happy to hear that! :D
To me it is not worth it just for RGB. To be honest Godox offer cheap RGB panels to give that effect. I would rather have a VL150 or two!!
But i did like the adjustable beam angle though. I Think that could be very useful. I would like that feature to spil into their other cob’s
Yeah and the fan noise....
But great content ad always. Cheers
True enough, about the panels.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video ...Sokani x60 80w rgb light...you can make a review on that
I'll keep it in mind, thanks!
Super useful review - thank you!
You're welcome! :D
It was great informative video. Thanks 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much.
Great Video!!! Love the channel :)
Thanks so much! :D
I just ordered the weeylite ninja 400 which is also bicolor not rgb. It was on sale on Amazon for $269. I wonder if you’ve heard of this? I'm excited to test it out.
Nice! I think I've heard of it... haven't used it myself tho. :) Hope you enjoy it
Very helpful. Thank you! I've been looking for an affordable rgb fx light with decent output. Guess I should keep looking. Looks like an interesting fixture but a little overpriced for what it does.
I like the Prolycht Orion 300FS, its high quality
Phone: here's a RUclips notification
Me: yay, Heather's back!
Haha yes😂 took extra time working on this review
@@FellowFilmmaker you have graduated to the level of the few YT channels that I have selected All Notifications. Great job and good luck! 😉😊
I feel very honored! Thank you 😄
@@FellowFilmmaker you're welcome!
Thanks for the honesty on the RGB light output. I better stick with gels and buy SL200w mark2 instead
Glad I could help :D
You are too good on the reviews.
Thank you very much
