PRRD did realized this on the end of his term. So many China pledges of investment but not even half was fulfilled and harassment in WPS continued. This is a good move by PBBM, he was probably peeved coz Xi pledged during PBBM's state visit to China that we are allowed to fish but after just a few days the CCG was again doing its thing. Great pivot by PBBM from the appeasement style of PRRD w/c did not work.

@Mrkenski In geopolitics we need to understand that we as a Nation of People cannot play it linearly as some of us wanted to. US and China are opposing giants and both of them are just plain BS as far as I'm concern. Take the example of Vietnam and China, though they are ramming each other ships in South China Sea, Vietnam secure one of the biggest trade with china in South East Asia. India, inspite of good relationship with U.S. it was able to secure discounted fuel from Russia. We hope that geopolitics is linear and easy, it's not. I pray that the leadership of the Philippines should learn how to play its card well if we want to emerge winner in the midst of all these turmoil and hypocrisy. God bless all Filipinos here and Abroad🙏

@Michael Goodman pls be reminded of how China reacted before we hailed them to UN arbitration,. They froze tons of banana export shipments from the PH w/c resulting in huge losses no reason was given.
That's how China deals w/ the PH regardless if we chose to do good business with them as we usually do. The don't separate business w/ politics We cannot trust them in any way. I really can't blame PBBM for making these EDCA related decisions, he's doing it for the best interest and security of the country. Best hope is that one day Xi realizes his folly w/c I doubt will happen.

The Philippines has really no choice except to tighten their defense. The UNCLOS decision was handed down 7 years ago and no matter what the Philippines asking the Chinese to restrain and respect the Philippines sovereign rights, the Chinese never stop the bullying. Enough is enough, your president made the right decision to stop the Chinese salami slicing tactics.
Aligning with Japan is also a crucial for the Philippines - I hope your president will find a way to convince the Japanese to join your cause.
Just an advice: this time try to build your military without too much dependent with the United States. The more you can stand up with yourself, the more your allies will respect you.

I have reviewed the interview of marcos held 2 weeks ago in Davos , Switzerland to seek for answers in his recent action on enhancing EDCA. He said that he wouldn't be doing his job as a philippine president if he didn't raise the issue of our fishermen to fish in the ayungin shoal and that this kept him up at night. Now I know. The Chinese government did not listen to Marcos. Right after the visit of Marcos in China he set up a direct communication line with Xi Jinpeng to resolve issues such as this one but still the Chinese coast guard drove away our fishermen and, we can surmise , Xi Jinpeng didn't do anything either to heed the call of marcos. Plus, those 2 chinese ships tailing a philippine vessel was the final nail on the coffin.
This drove marcos to the arms of the americans, presumably. Marcos is a man of his word. He felt insulted by the Chinese for not taking him seriously! Oh man, other world leaders should take marcos more seriously when it is their turn to speak to him!

@@maryjoymamaradlo7205 of course, he thought of the bigger picture. But certainly, he could have been more accommodating to the Chinese if they were only more sensitive to the issue of our territorial sovereignty. A transparent security arrangement in the south china sea could have been agreed with. But still this is not a zero- sum game. A future deal could still be arranged. China's future is in the Indo - Pacific. It is not in their interest to upset the balance of power in this region. The Chinese must engage the Philippines in trade and investment because this is a more effective and lasting strategy . It is to the advantage of the Chinese to engage all the ASEAN members head on. If they want to secure their place in the world the Chinese must beat the Americans in the economic space. Economics will make China stronger in this calculus of power play. China must continue to grow in economic size, political influence and moral sphere. They cannot do otherwise.

Professor Castro's insight of the Philippines' role in this ever-growing geopolitical world events surrounding the southeast Asian region is starting to make sense. China's rise to world power has made it so arrogant and rude to grab territories from their surrounding neighbors because of their "fantasy based" historical right. Adding insult to injury, they made military bases on all these grabbed territories capable of conducting naval and air power building runways, ports, long range radars and weapons.
Chinese encroachment in our territorial waters is beyond diplomatic solution. President Duterte's policy on embracing China and rejecting the US did nothing to stop it from happening. President Marcos went to Beijing a month ago and probably realized that all the protests and appeasement in the world will not stop China from building more bases in our backyard. Professors Castro's assessment in this change of policy in dealing with China is the next logical step.

The important point which you do not want to accept is that the appease strategy was not reciprocated with a result that favored the citizens of RP, specifically fishermen. The point is that the weight of the action's effect which is a turnaround & intent to return to the alliance not the length of implementation of friendly policy w/ PRC, as ineffective as it was, describe or define the foreign policy of D30 admin.

    Reply to Melvin Sta.rita:
Filipinos can learn to love the Chinese? We already have a taste of what it's like to have Chinese masters. I cannot forget the soy sauce advertisement where the Chinese were having a party and the camera focused on the Filipina maid looking on pitifully by the stairs. That stuck in my mind because I couldn't understand why they were treating her that way. I have never observed such meanness. I didn't know about racism then. The only Chinese I knew then was the one who owned a store in town. He was all business. I didn't see anything negative about him, at least, none that I've witnessed. He wasn't friendly, either. At school, my Chinese classmates didn't socialise with us, not even a "hi" or even a glance. I didn't mind. I put it down to cultural and lingual differences. I had Chinese friends at work who frankly admitted that their family won't let them marry Filipinos. Again, I didn't feel insulted. I just put it down to cultural differences. Then Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong became popular. That's when I noticed that my Chinese co-workers view me as an inferior, although I am not a domestic helper. I have never felt such disdain from anyone just because I'm Filipino. There are some good Chinese, I'm sure. But with their godless society whose mantra is "Might is right" , "Survival of the fittest", "Rule of the jungle", how will hapless Filipinos fare when they rule over us? Don't waste your time convincing me that they will treat us as equals. They've already shown their true colours. Their prosperity has given them a superiority complex and made them arrogant and spiteful. Just read the comments from the wumaos of how lowly they think of Filipinos.
With no belief in an afterlife and no consequences (punishment and reward), what incentive do they have to be good to their fellow human beings? Only because they expect benefits in return? Do they live only for themselves? "Might is right!" ... "Survival of the fittest!"... "Rule of the jungle!"

Challenging China politically is out of the question, what we need is bolstering our military present in our borders especially in WPS so that the unilateral exploration would be feasible. However, all these are impossible because we dont have THE budget like the US. The previous administration have done there part to improve our military by procuring military equipment while appeasing the China, thus all of those are inadequate. For sure the exportation industry such as the plantain will be heavily affected the most by these decision since China is one of our big costumer.

Bakit pa tayo pauuto sa Amerika eh laos na, lagi ngang talo sa gyera ito. The US can't do anything anyway, it lost its wars, it even lost to Vietnam, & the Americans ran for dear life to the Kabul airport chased by the Talibans. HAHAHA
Now the Americans are hiding behind the Ukrainians & use them as cannon fodder. They plan to hide behind the Filipinos too & use us as cannon fodder because they fear the Chinese like they fear the Russians HAHAHA

With due respect to the opinion of the good professor, I beg to disagree to his conclusion that the Marcos administration adopted the Duterte administration insofar as our relation with China is concerned. President Duterte was pro-China and even adopted the SINOVAC vaccine while President BBM is pro-US. And rightly so, because, during WW2, he fought side by side with the Americans. being a PA Second Lieutenant.
