Many of us felt that way years & years ago, but we just dealt with it because it was Nintendo handhelds & not their home consoles.
Now the issues are even more glaring. When the Switch is exponentially more powerful than the 3DS, yet the games still look so similar (only now in HD!), there's a huge problem.
We only got diagonal movement 2 generations ago... Thats not exactly difficult to program, in fact from my experience from movement is harder.
Tbh Ultrasun/moon was very good and brought some nice innovation
Corey my problem is the game isn’t even that HD. It’s like 720p when docked and the game is quite blurry in handheld. To the point where objects or characters right in front of me are too blurry to see the models clearly. Like this game should be an easy 1080p or 900p when docked if Zelda was 900p. I can’t stand the resolution in handheld and it makes no sense this game has subpar resolutions compared to more graphically, engine-heavily, huge scale comparative games.
I honestly just don’t want the game to be another 4 hour tutorial 🤷🏾♂️ that’s what killed Sun and Moon for me, I had to go back to playing Omega Ruby just for feeling like I had some sort of challenge progressing ,id also like a more interactive story

Pokemon to me is a lot better and more of a problem with a lot better than a good deal of a good one for a reason and a good one to use there was no way that was going on for a few more days but I just got a big black and a little more of a bit of the best fruit and I hope you have the 4th chance that I will get you to know the truth and the other one of my friends is a lot of good people who have been in a lot better than the last two years of my career as the most famous of all time in my life so I don't think I can get a job dude disappointed emoji spam police are the best of the same as I have to check the internet for the next one so that's what Pokemon is to me

This is the most honest first impression I have watched from someone who outright mentions that their game copy was handed by Nintendo.
Any other reviews you recommend? It’s so hard finding neutral reviews with this game.
@@Twofirmfeet1024 Not from RUclipsrs or official review sites so far, no. Most of the former are afraid to say anything beyond _"I won't take a side, but actually I will but I'll be vague about it to not compromise my reputation"_ , and most of the latter are outright shilling, so we are stuck with a few people like Arlo who are actually willing to stay as open-minded and objective as humanly possible without fearing backlash.
It's totally justified though. It's absolutely alright to have an opinion that places you on a side, but both of those sides have been so incredibly vitriolic that anybody who reviews professionally has every right to be nervous about expressing those opinions, not necessarily due to avoiding the toxicity, but to avoid being associated with it.
I thought the tutorials *were* skippable though.

@@Hogglefath Pokemon has changed in minor ways. Ultimately it's still the same formula but the thing is each pokemon game has it's own set of strengths and weaknesses, and I think that shows how important those minor changes can be to an experience. That's why the Pokemon community debates these kinds of changes as they do. That and when you don't have big changes all you have left to focus on are the more minor ones. Though this game is unique as it's the only REAL main series Pokemon game to have such a big change (in the hearts of many fans, anyway, who kinda ARE the people who matter when discussing the effect a decision like this has) in the form of Dexit.
blu well game freak is historically bad at making games ( they have great ideas) but they have no clue how to put them into practice especially with the fact that they are pretty much the worst game devs ever at optimization and iwatta isn’t there to help them with that anymore ) wanna know the future of Pokémon take a gander at gen 1 glitches that is the polish you can expect if they don’t hire ok extra help for the technical parts. Also it has less content then gameboy advance games probably because they don’t know how to fit it all in. Then add the time constraints and the fact that they are new to switch development and it’s only natural that this game is a complete disgrace compared to the days iwatta helped them ( gen 2 to five)

I've been hearing this a lot lately and it's pretty telling.
Lets be real, people are only trying to be positive because it's the hype season. Weak willed people want to be part of an in crowd. Give it a couple of months and people will complain again.

Just watching people stream it it looks like every other Pokemon game since gold and silver. Just disappointing that Pokemon hasn't really "evolved" in 20 years. I expected 3d Pokemon as boring as this one back when the stadium games were coming out...

@@optimusfreim3686 BotW suffers the same draw distance rendering issues complained about here. I don't know what the rest of those abbreviations are, but Odyssey is an insanely low poly game, which allows it to take advantage of higher draw distances, 60 fps, etc. Astral Chain looks good but runs like straight garbage (inconsistent frame rate). Splatoon is an arena shooter with significantly less assets to render. Would you like me to continue explaining to you why different games have different limitations?

I was one of the people that didn't really care about the Dexit controversy but after finishing the game I have to say that I REALLY wish they didn't cut all the pokemon this gen. You finally have an actual area dedicated to catching a diverse and huge amount of pokemon and NOW you decide to limit the game this much? I really hope the ''Ultra/2/Emerald'' version of this game just expands on the wild area, put in events so everyone joins in on raids and stuff. Imagine something like a Lugia raid that is actually pretty hard and everyone jumps to try and catch that, it would be incredible.
Whenever they have something they drop it for the next game.
It is really cool! My dex is around the 80s and still don't have a single badge... I think I maybe spent tío much time there
@@saveumberto I also felt the dex was pretty underwhelming. The selection was cool but the dex number doesn't surpass the Ultra Sun and Moon count which is kinda lame

There were definitely some points in the vid where I was like: "You must not have followed this game at all...".
I also thought this when I first started, really disappointed that it's quite limited in its ability to be explored, went everywhere in the first day

@@ohrenaugenkatze_ I just enjoyed the rivalry trio and that the game branched off from a lot of typical pokemon staples like have a trio of actual rivals (xy is dumb), having them all have different personalities and they're not all initially so chummy, the growth with the characters from Jop developing out of his inferiority complex, bede understanding his own worth without the chairman having to define him, and marnie developing from someone wanting to leave home to becoming the gym leader of her hometown. I also enjoyed the lack of an evil team trying to take over the world. that gets kind of boring honestly and it was a lot more subtle being the chairman (and it not being some TEAM whatever). the music in this game was also straight FLAMES i haven't enjoyed the music this much in a while especially Toby Fox's song he made. I loved the focus on the gym challenge and that there was a final tournament (akin to the anime) instead of the basic elite 4 every. single. game. and it was fun to have this rivalry between characters that are all reaching for the top for their own reasons. Hop wanting to beat his brother once and for all, bede wishing to show his value as an asset to the chairman, and marnie wanting to experiencing the larger world out of her slum like home. so ya.... this game was pretty damn good in my book.

I dont even mind the tree, but the berries just falling through the world? Not even landing and fading away, just straight falling as if they don’t exist? That kind of thing kills immersion for me. Unless the character can also fall there, my brain just see the berries as hitbox-less polygons now.

From what I've seen so far... these games could have been f*cking incredible if they'd just been given more time.
Tobykachu I’ll wait for next year, the game looks like 2008 free to play MMOs with much less content.
Should've been a mid-late 2020 title. This is just a weak effort by all involved.
Honestly, I think they want to stay conserved with this game. This is their very first main series Pokemon game on a new console that while continuing to exhibit characteristics similar to handheld devices, the Nintendo Switch is a whole new world to work with and even more possibilities to develop the game. They already tested out what they could do with Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, so now they are testing out what the Switch could do with a main series game,p with basically the same formula, but with an overarching world.
Note: Then again, I haven’t been keeping up to tabs with Game Freak so how should I know, right?
What I’m saying here is that while the style they put in here is still enough for it to differentiate itself from other games (You could tell they were still trying to keep that aspect with the region, the lore, the world itself), you can tell they were trying to be minimal in other parts of it (their approach to the game, the starter evolutions, etc.). I believe, without a doubt, that they could’ve done a lot more if they had more time. That I agree with, but I bet that once they become more familiar with the Switch and what they could do with it, I think they will go all out in the next one or any other one.
Note: Don’t take my word for it too much, though. It’s just a hypothesis.
@@dxg5659 Pokémon is a multimillion dollar ip and GameFreak has an endless budget and its backed by one of the biggest gaming publishers in the world... There's no excuse for the game to be this out dated except laziness and greed.
It would be incredible if they fixed everything in the 2nd version of sword/shield for 2020

Funny you mentioned scaling, you should see wailord. hes literally just the size of the trainer, yet in the NGC games he was scaled pretty well.
That was a great part in Colosseum. Battling that one trainer in the Under because THE SIZE OF THEM, BRILLIANT!
There is a video on youtube for that. The guy uses the gc and wii era games where he showcases the wailord and cimpared it with the new one and...its just sad
@@Yokai_Yuri Then yet again, it wouldn't be feasible to have Wailord properly scaled. It would just take up the entire body of water and look very awkward moving about. And the same for the tiny Pokemon like Joltik, you just wouldn't be able to see them.

@@ahighdef.experience3394 I mean, the example he said, looked pretty OK with XD...that being said, Pokemon has WEIRD heights (like Charizard for example) that they can do what they want, really as long as you convey their size well.
The main issue is still the same. It look's, and feels, like a Pokemon game.
On a console where Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem (say what you will, the character animations were great), and SO many other game's that Look and Feel Awesome!
And Pokemon's just...pokemon.
It just doesn't feel like a next generation game on a next generation system.
BOTW was my first Zelda so I can't comment on that (other then it being one of the best games I've played) and I haven't gotten to any FE titles yet, but Luigi's Mansion 3 felt like an evolution. When 2 came out it just felt like the sequel. This third title felt like an actual evolution, a perfect combination of the first two games. They claimed to listen to fans and after playing I can tell you nearly every single one of my wants were met. (There is no easy replayability to refight ghosts like in the remakes, I liked the elemental coins, online mode could be developed on). The thing is, if I say that, I may actually get what I want in the 4th game because they actually listen to fans.
I adore the game, but honestly? Nothing about three houses looked good.

Yeah three houses didn't exactly look fantastic. But it didn't cut features to say it improved on graphics. We don't talk about the ground textures in that game though. Those are just awful. Lol

You'll hear gamers like me talk about how graphics aren't that important but when I say that I mean I don't mind graphics that are a generation or two behind *IF* it's in the interest of a better experience.
You can't just use n64 trees without adding something to compensate.
A balance must be struck.
It’s not just the graphics it’s the art direction too. Ever since Pokemon went 3D it’s looked like a mobile game. Everything is super smooth, the color design is very basic, the scenery typically looks uninspired and just kind of like “well yeah that’s what a forest looks like I guess.” I can’t articulate it perfectly but even comparing this to something older like Super Mario Galaxy something about 3D Pokemon games just lacks personality. I’m still enjoying my time with SwSh (I’m playing Shield myself) but Pokémon’s visuals lost some of their charm after gen 5 imo.
Tyler Young I actually like the art direction of pokemon games, it just needs to be cranked up to modern standards and make use of the power available to it.

Fanboys are always in denial. There are people who willfully defended Star Fox Zero. An awful looking game with barely any content that features some of the worst controls and gameplay gimmicks since the Kinect controlled Virtual Boy. Made by Nintendo and Platinum for petes sake.. It should have been butchered at the review roundups and remind Nintendo to put in some effort. Not even they and Miyamoto get a free pass

To be fair it's nothing special but the graphics are better than ever and for a team used to making handheld games I wouldn't have expected better. Its still the best pokemon has ever looked and so far it's a really good game. I encourage you to go into this as you usually would other pokemon games and you will enjoy it greatly
@@kenmken --- Well, yeah, but Pokemon was limited to the 3DS. Pokemon has always looked the best it could given the limitations of each console. Like I can't imagine Ultra Sun/Moon looking any better given the 3DS specs, so they did a fantastic job there! But the improvements haven't even touched anywhere near their full potential with Sw/Sh. They'll probably improve in gen 9, though. Seems like these games suffered rushed development by a team that had no prior experience for developing for full-blown consoles, so I can let it go. Pokemon's never been about the graphics, anyways.
My issue is that, because it’s now on the Switch, it’s now a FULL $60 game... but it’s objectively less in every way. I don’t need a complete Zelda BotW style overhaul (though that would be amazing), but Game Freak couldn’t even give us a game with the same stale content as before. I don’t think saying that people were expecting too much is even fair. People were at the very least expecting the bare minimum. No mater how you look at it, it’s now a $60 game but it’s just less. AND WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SHADY POKEMON HOME STUFF?

Ibby you can say that buy newer fans just say you expect too much from game freak.. the way u see it you look at the difference between gen 1 and 2, it was huge and people expected it, same between 5 and 6. why is it a crime to expect a shift now it it more to do with the fanbase now shielding game freak from criticism?
I see a lot of "you can't expect them to innovate and change things while also keeping all the old stuff" and my response is that I don't expect that, I just wish they picked one of the two. I think if the game had a full national dex, even with the lackluster technical upgrades I'd be happy. On the flip side, had they still cut over half of all Pokemon, but in return they drastically overhauled gameplay mechanics or delivered a truly great looking game that also would've made me happy. Instead it seems we got the worst option

This exactly! The Anime seems to be the main focus nowadays, which sucks for people who like both the Anime and main games but like them to be two very separate things.

The honesty w both the positives and the negatives further highlights the problem with the big company reviews like ign and the like. This review actually provided me with information. This game still doesn't seem right for me but at least doesn't glorify the game as the best in the series or negate that it has any positive innovations. Thanks Arlo. Keep it classy

@@Blackpapalink I'm talking about fundamental things such as the level design. Outside of the wild area, the routes are all a lot more linear. The cities are all lacking with little to actually do in them and the game holds your hand throughout it. Comparing various aspects like those to past games, I'm amazed someone can call it the best Pokemon game ever.

Even if you ignore the fact that this is just not a high quality Switch game or any of the ways in which Game Freak has failed to innovate when other titles would have, and willfully misinterpret people's issues with the cut features as "nitpicks", that's still a real stretch.
@@Graestra It's not terribly surprising. Professional reviewers for sites like IGN aren't paid for their honest opinions, they're paid, primarily, to act as publicity.
In all likelihood, she was tapped by IGN to write for the game because she's always chosen to write very positive spins on Nintendo properties, and IGN is eager to maintain good relationships with Nintendo in 2020.
This isn't like a "fake news" kinda thing, everyone's sorta aware that professional game reviews from big outlets are somewhat tainted by monetary incentives, and I don't mean to say that the reviewers are _lying_ , but their interests aren't in dissuading people from buying video games, and are lightyears away from being in upsetting one of the biggest corporations in modern gaming.

Spooky Yeahhh unfortunately. I might get it eventually because I do like some parts of it but overall it just doesn’t deliver well enough for me to reason buying at full price.
Exactly. Since these games are now being sold at a full price of like $60 (plus the online fee to trade) instead of $40 (without an online fee), I was expecting so much more. I'd rather wait. Money is too valuable and I'd rather spend it elsewhere.

NGL, I find imagining how the battles would look in the anime to be a lot more fun than staring at whatever is happening on screen
After smash ultimate, breath of the wild and odyssey, sword and shield just don't really hold up
I can't wait for someone to make a side by side comparison of the beautiful, expressive animations of Smash and Odyssey next to the plastic doll animations of swsh

You should see the multiplayer aspect where you can see other real people playing the game and running around, much like an MMO. You can even interact with them and camp with them. It's much more interesting but this first impression does it no justice since he didn't turn on the internet lol

@@yetiridernunu7226 I think that comparing a game from the 3rd best selling game franchise to any game is fair for the game in question. If it doesn't seem fair for that game, it means the game is below what you would expect from a main installment of the 3dr best selling game franchise.

I remember feeling very underwhelmed with Pokémon Let's Go, with people saying things like "yo, shut up, the mainline game is coming next year and it's gonna blow your socks off, bro"

So who can blame the Pokemon company for releasing a bog standard indie game with a full AAA price tag. Pokemon prints money. I was feeling that way back in Gen 5 and I had the time of my life with that after leaving Pokemon at the beginning of Gen 3. I watched as things got blander and GF coasted more and more on the Pokemon nostalgia and wondered how these games had adult fans. I love Pokemon as much as the next Genwunner but the repetitiveness wears on me quickly.

joe Skyrim is a ps3 game. And botw is cell shaded and fairly empty most of the time plus it slows down when lots of things are happening on the screen at once it also has no online components once so ever. And mmos definitely do try to keep requirements low but they can be controlled in the setting based on your computer. But they definitely still require a massive amount of processing power. And mmos that do look good visually don’t run that well like black desert.

I think the town looks gorgeous and I find it to be a delight, I love the pokemon designs and gym designs. It's just the lack of effort everywhere else that gets me

-If you were expecting a lot of major changes, you’ll be disappointed
-If you just want another new Pokémon game, you’ll like it

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, Game Freak has been stagnant as hell with this series. But stuff like the dex cut...
I love Pokemon, I like this game so far (in some small part because it’s impossible for me to not enjoy a mainline Pokémon game at least somewhat,) but it really does feel like this could have just been on the 3DS and that stings. Not just because there’s so much more potential to be had on the Switch but because I’m spending twice the money on what feels like exactly the same amount of game.
I really like it, but I definitely see the flaws in it and they're not that minor. Won't stop me from having a bit of fun.

this basically sums it up for me. Nothing has blown me away. The QoL fixes are nice, but they are expected every new game, and they are such old problems that are being solved that it's not that amazing. Also, why bring back disposable TM's (TR's)? Just to force players to grind for moves? The core gameplay is good as always and i love the monster designs. Biggest disappointment is the story. I'm not done yet, but it seems so half-assed. And this is coming off of Sun/Moon's stories which got a lot of attention from the devs. Also, the towns in this game very unmemorable. Uninteresting NPC's. Very few want to battle you. Town are empty kind of and mostly just one or two paths. Even the giant one is just one long road and the gym. That's it. Very half-baked effort from GF. Not bad games, just passable, bare minimum. They need to spend far more time on their next entries. Don't bother rushing. They need to rethink a lot of stuff about the series.

Tbf I do really like this game I think the wild area is one of my favourite things in any pokemon game you can have such a diverse team ffs I had a ninetales by gym 2 in any other game you would get a ninetales till 6th-7th gym and that is just so cool that that's possible. But I can understand how the national dex is a gripe with this game yea there's 400 or so pokemon bút there are so many beloved pokemon gone now until next game atleast

Can we call a spade a spade and overall just say fail? I knew immediately when playing BOTW even in the tutorial it was a game worth being excited for. This initial reaction from the fans, the DIE hard fans, is so lackluster. You gotta be kidding me when the Pokémon company -worth BILLIONS of dollars-cannot fully flesh out this world. Yes, there are elements to the new game to enjoy. Of course it’ll still be “good”- it’s new.

This will be a little long but my feelings are very close to in line with Arlo here.
When people ask me how I am liking Pokemon Sword/Shield the words that come out of my mouth are "Never have I been so excited, and disappointed simultaneously while playing a game before".
For what it is... Pokemon Sword and Shield are is in fact a lot of fun. Overall I'm enjoying it. All the little quality of life improvements, the wild area is something I didn't think I'd enjoy as much as I have, it just feels great seeing Pokemon on the big screen and playing with a controller in my hands, the colours are really pretty and not washed out like in the 3DS games, camping with the Pokemon is adorable, and raid battles with friends really make this game a more social experience then I think I've ever had in Pokemon.
Yet for everything that excites me to to play Pokemon Sword/Shield ... there is so many things that drag it down and take away from it. The wild area is great, but it's not as large as it first seems to be, and for as fun as it is, it's very clear it's meant to be a time sink. Return and visit it and do raids and events daily, collect rare items in the same places each time. It gets repetitive. Also like Arlo mentions you see some interesting land marks in the wild area, but they don't serve a purpose lore or story wise. If you are lucky it may be where you find a TM. This is with out mentioning that as cool as the Wild Area is, it is also the ugliest and roughest looking part of the game. I'm pretty sure this is due to it being full of online players at times, and is to help keep the game from grinding to a halt (since when online the wild area can stutter quite a bit). That said it looks pretty low resolution overall and the trees can look like they came form the N64 era. The grass and weather effects, even the water... look pretty good. It's just really weird.
Camping and playing with your Pokemon is actually really cool and fun, mind you it gets boring pretty quick. It's basically the replacement of Pokemon amie that let you pet your pokemon previously and feed them. But along with that... why can't we pet and feed them. It feels like that should be something you can do with them here. Give them a berry to munch or something, pet them after you call them up to you. Being able to play with them should have been the addition building on the frame work laid out in the 6th and 7th generation. Instead though feeding and petting them was dropped for the ability to throw a ball and waggle a toy in front of them. Also this feature really intensifies the loss of half the Pokedex, and someones favorite Pokemon. Cause when the game is asking you to bond with your new guys, inevitably I'm sure players will wish they could do this with one of their favorites that they've been transferring for years.
The story is ... so bare bones. It does nothing to hook you in save for the basic Pokemon goal of become the Champion. It's done to a wonderful aesthetic though. A huge stadium where you really feel like people in this world love to see epic Pokemon battles and small guys rise up the ranks to reach the top. Aside from that though there's no grander story plot (as far as I've seen since I'm just half way through now)... no Team criminal organization out to steal Pokemon, or start a revolution, or reshape the universe to their desire, or people seeking to control life and death. There's been hints at a coming danger or natural disaster, and learning about the regions history, but that's about it.
Basically for everything I find exciting there is so much that prevents me for just being fully immersed in the world. I get pulled out by all the hitches in the game design. The lack of polish, and the sort of bare bones game it feels to be. The most revolutionary aspect (the wild area) isn't enough to make up for all the trimmed off meat of the Pokemon games.

You will be able to train and and transfer from this point on. Yeah the story has been bland but that's only what I've played so far. The New Pokemon are super fun to find and see what they evolve into. I honestly have not complained about the pokedex cuts. The galar Pokedex has over 400 pokemon. I personally still think it's worth it. But I'm a person who thinks botw is worth $120 instead of $60. That game is a piece of art.

The only cool addition they made to Zelda was shield surfing. Regardless SwSh has the worst example of hand holding being the tutorials notes that you constantly find in the Wild Area.
They are unavoidable, unhelpful, and regularly impede your progress that was already a straight line.

I’m 37 and this is my first Pokémon game I’ve ever played in my life. So I don’t have much to say about the actual gameplay because I’m new to the series. However, I will say they have no excuse for the graphics. I mean I know that Pokémon isn’t known for being a graphics powerhouse, but there’s no excuse for this game running at 30 fps or below. If Mario Odyssey can have 60 FPS game play more than 99% of the time, then why can’t Sword and Shield? It definitely comes off as lazy to me. Hopefully I’ll find something enjoyable about this game. I really wanna like the series because I always felt left out having never played the games before.
Edit: Also wouldn’t these supposed “improved” animations look much better at 60fps compared to 30? 😛
Honestly, the first three generations did it better, coming from a 29 year old who grew up with the first games. Maybe it's nostalgia that makes me think that way, but I feel that the games have only downgraded and gotten easier, lazier and unoptimized. Even this new generation contains some odd looking Pokemon designs, but I can't blame them since it gets harder to be original with the amount that already exists.

My favorite Pokemon games are HeartGold/SoulSilver and Black/White. HGSS is a remake of Gold and Silver, games that included TWO regions, and are well worth the $50-$70 you pay for (the price hasn't gone down even after all this time lmao). SoulSilver was my first Pokemon game and I'm glad as it was chock full of your standard Pokemon experience and then some, with improved graphics and features from Gold/Silver. I highly recommend it as a better introduction to the series. Black/White and Black 2/White 2 are also amazing, as they have by far my favorite storyline and integration of the legendaries into the plot, and the sequel ties in well to the events of the first game. The graphics were also pretty groundbreaking for the time in the franchise, with animated pixel art.
Get a used 3DS and play a real Pokémon game.

I swear this is a 3DS game they just changed the resolution on, removed the second screen, and ported to the switch. It would explain why they cut 65% of the pokedex, to make room for these large areas, with terrible textures.
It looks very similar to Sun/Moon upscaled on an emulator, just with better lighting..
To be fair, I was wondering how they would be able to accommodate Mega Evolution, Totems, Z-Moves and Gigamaxing in one balanced package.

No. I’m commenting. It’s clear from this video that you’re really underwhelmed by the game, and since the first few trailers I’ve been too. People say that talking about the pop-ins and the trees is nitpicking, but it really isn’t. Dexit was just the last straw for most of us.
Game Freak is not an indie studio. They do not deserve to be hailed for a game so underwhelming and slapped together that the only real praise you have is that you’re having fun with something because it’s new. Like you’ve said before, Pokémon is THE biggest franchise in the world. They make so much money and this is the best they can do? Is that really okay?
They’ve outright lied to our faces about improving when obviously they haven’t. They cut so many fan-favourite features and pokémon, and replaced it with nothing but a higher price tag. They’re incompetent and they clearly aren’t passionate any more.
It breaks my heart that one of my favourite games keep getting worse and worse. And they will, because people keep excusing them and protecting them from criticism.

The game runs badly, locked at 30fps, the pop-ins are horrifyingly bad programming, for instance. And you’ll have to provide proof of the funding because that makes no sense for, I repeat, the biggest franchise on earth.
Dave Marx the reason I say incompetent is that I don’t think they’re making such a lackluster experience on purpose. I believe they think this is actually great and people are going to love it and they don’t have anything they should add or fix. I remember one of the devs justifying cutting the Battle Frontier because kids play mobile games instead. They have no idea what they’re doing anymore. Since the jump to 3D with X and Y they’ve struggled with their programming and graphics and it may be that this is actually the best they can do.
Then again maybe I’m lying to myself. Maybe they’re doing this all on purpose. Because god knows if they’d just hire more people with all that money they’re sitting on we wouldn’t be wondering this.

I'm pretty sure it's the location where special event/gift raids get sent to. I got a code for a dynamax Larvitar with my copy of Shield, and that's where it showed up. I think they just wanted to make it stand out so you know where to go, because I definitely had a moment of panic over which den it was sent to before realizing the tower was all lit up with a pillar of light.

I LOVE when games have art for every item and I enjoy actually seeing that item in the overworld. For example: every vegetable/plant/fruit has a unique sprite in the *indie title* Stardew Valley.

I also love how you gain the power to stop time while shaking trees and to collect berries, as we noticeably see when the 2 Pancham are running towards Arlo. lol what a joke. In other games, you would have enemies attack you while you are trying to do something like gather resources or even in your inventory, yea its annoying but more realistic feeling.

They should've kept mega evolution, kept the national dex OR actually improved the livelyness of the Pokemon that are already in the game, added a difficulty setting, and most importantly, give hop more character. As of now Hop is just cool with loosing to you, he even declares you the future champion, and he doesn't have any depth and just feels pathetic. It would be cool if you constantly beat him, and he becomes jealous and becomes a more serious rival or maybe even a villain.
The Pokemon Company couldn't care less about making the games good. They'll know their brainless fanbase with no standards whatsoever will eat it up because it's Pokemon.

They can't delay the game because the franchise moves forward all at once, and it just wouldn't be possible for Pokemon as a franchise to delay all of their new media and merchandise just for sw/sh. I think gamefreak and Nintendo know what we want, and will make a better game next generation, but honestly I don't even think sw/sh is even a "bad" game, I think these games would be hailed if they were a first or second entry in the series, and I'm having fun with it anyway, but I know for a fact that gamefreak and nintendo can do much, much better. Pokemon is the most popular multimedia franchise after all, we hold them to a higher standard and they should hold themselves to higher standards too, the game generally so far is good imo, but when held up as the triple A title it is, it feels lazy.

"I have some complaints but I'm having fun" sums up my experience as well, although the cap on how strong the Pokemon you can catch are infuriates me. If I go to all the trouble to take the risk of encountering something much stronger than I am, and I can conquer that foe AND capture it, I freaking earned it. The handholding and railroading is inexcusable.
I think it's to stop people either using quick balls or timer balls to catch like a level 50 pokemon. But you can still get a tone of xp
There is a small chance to catch something even with a pokeball at full health. If you save scum in front of a high level Pokemon early game, or if you get lucky, you can easily ruin the game for yourself otherwise.

If you could capture higher level pokemon with no restriction, it would be far to easy to get level 50 somethings before the first gym. Have a normal type pokemon, stand in front of a ghost (level 25-ish around the tower, duskulls and I think some others only have ghost type attacks) throw pokeballs until it's caught, if you run out then reload. Then with your team of level 25-ish ghosts (maybe even others, since that would also power grind your current team) start going out and capturing higher and higher level pokemon. Your only limiting factor is money for the balls, but that's easy to get by selling the stuff you find, and you can find poke, great and ultra balls in the wild area itself.
I'm not thrilled with the system, but it's not too bad and I can see why it's necessary.
Didn’t they already have a restriction in previous games? If you have a high lvl Pokémon, then it could refuse to listen to you or “load around.” Me wanting to catch something above my ability is MY choice to make. Dumb that they implemented that in my opinion from playing Pokémon from the gen 1

I've been a hardcore fan of pokemon since gen 4 but I'm still not sold on this game. Especially since a lot of staples of the series are gone or limited. (and no, I'm NOT just talking about the national dex, that's the least of my problems)

What are the other problems for this game. Last time I played Pokemon was black and white.
Lancaster Greenfield well, the escape rope is a key item, but there are only 3 places you can use it. Also, they removed a boat load of moves like hidden power and retaliate. The story is very weak, to the point that there’s almost no story. The exp share is also a key item, and you can’t turn it off, which makes it easy to be overleveled. And finally, in a weak attempt to balance this, trainer battles are very scarce, usually 2 or less trainers per route.

I'm playing it and finding very hard to get past all the flaws. I actually had to stop playing for a bit when I first encountered the pop in. People were comparing it to BotW, and that I was not prepared for how much of a lie that comparison was.
I think if I could not focus on these annoyances I'd be having a lot more fun, but they all seem to be so in your face.
I also had trouble picking a starter as I'm not really into any of their final evo's. I went for the same as Arlo in the end and named him TD after the best James Bond (Timothy Dalton).
Honestly, If this came out on the 3DS (obviously with graphics to match) I'd be a lot more forgiving. But right now it just feels like an HD port of a 3DS game. I can't really see myself playing much after beating the story, which is very unusual for me with a Pokemon game.
I'm just left feeling underwhelmed.

Sorry to disappoint you, but absolutely nothing happens.
I'm now 8 badges into the game, and so far, while I've more or less been enjoying my time with it, I have felt that this game has been somewhat underwhelming, if you ask me. Quite a few areas I've gone through have been far shorter than I anticipated, leaving me with just a feeling of "That's it?", once I've gotten through them.
The wild area, while a neat idea, also doesn't seem to have too much going on in it really, which is pretty disappointing. The raid battles are neat, and all the Pokemon you can find are also cool, but as I've been playing today, I've been thinking about how it really kinda feels like all this nice stuff is really only there to help you make a competitive team to go and fight against and with others online. It doesn't quite feel like there's gonna be too much to do there as a single player.
And as for the story so far, eh, honestly, I don't feel like much has happened so far really. I was most interested in Marnie as a character, but I'm wishing that she got more screentime than she did get so far. Granted, I'm not done with the main game, but I can guess there's probably not too much left, and I think she could've had a bit of a bigger role throughout the story so far if you ask me.
I think I know how I can kind of describe my feelings towards the game so far. It's a fun game, but it's also a very flawed one too. It's not bad, but I know Pokemon can, and should do much better than this.
fun thing is i would've loved to play this game competetively. It is something i got into with xy but because of the roster cut i am not interested in playing this game. As i have put so much time into breeding and leveling my mons and most of them are now rendered useless or are removed entirely (lack of bank doesn't help much either)
That's exactly like how I felt with sun and moon. Like I beat the whole game in only a day or two and while the credits rolled all I could think was "...that's it?"
I even played the game a couple more times right after that because I was genuinely confused and thought I missed something. And I was _extremely_ disappointed when I finally realized that there was literally nothing else to game had that you could do.
Great summary, btw. Not gonna pick it up personally because it’s now a $60 game but with less content. Can’t wait for them to release another “just very okay” game next year! And the year after that... and the year after that... and the y- Oh wait, I just need to accept that Game Freak will never innovate will they? :(

From what I've seen I really have no real interest in this tbh. You mentioned going up to something that looked interesting and nothing being there and thats my biggest fear summed up in one sentence. The pokemon experience and story and battling could all be great but the regions have been coming up short in ways that I didnt realise was important to me until they were gone

This game would seriously benefit from voice acting. Coming out of Three Houses, the cut scenes and dialogues in this game are so...2004.
Main series Pokemon has always advanced at a snail's pace compared to everything else. Now GameFreak just doesn't have the excuse of being on a handheld.
If they didn’t have voice acting they could at least not have lip flapping.
Even just Zelda-style vaguely human grunts when you open a dialogue box would do wonders

@@ilikeceral3 Completely agree. Not even remotely and effort made to try and match up the mouth movements to the dialogue... I've found myself straining to try and ignore the mouths and just read the text, but the disturbing nature of the mouth movements are so distracting. This game absolutely needed/needs voice acting.
1:43 It's interesting to hear you say that, because I've heard a lot of other people say that one of the best parts of this game was that they actually toned down the tutorial quite a bit. Not that this invalidates your opinion, of course; it's just interesting to hear different people's takes on it.
I haven't had an issue with tutorials either.
I felt like the tutorials were pretty well handled, especially compared to some of the more recent 3DS entries. You definitely skip part of the tutorial if you say yes when the professor asks if you know about pokemon. In addition, if you use a move with type advantage in your first fight against your rival, he simply says "oh, so you know about type advantages already!" and the game doesn't try to explain it to you.

I think for me the reason this tutorial seemed fine was because sun and moon and X and y took ages with amount of dialogue and I didn't get invested in any story (except team skull in sun) whereas here I haven't noticed the dialogue as long as those games and it usually lets you get on with stuff. In one day I've beat 3 gyms and got a great all new team but also been very busy catching old Pokemon which I've found a good variety of.
@@lancearmada tried to start ultra moon recently. I honestly couldn't. Never felt like i was able to start. Especially when i already played sun/moon. Probably around 5 hours of tutorial..
I'm still just amazed that it's 2019, and Game Freak still has such poor battle animations, and hasn't figured out a way to show Pokemon actually connecting with each other....
The little hopping, or sad little animations like @ 13:21 are so ancient, and only made sense when they were using far less powerful systems & sprites. There have been many larger, more complex games that make far less money & have managed much better, yet The Pokemon Company & Game Freak can't invest in a proper development team with a large enough budget to move past this weak stuff?
We still gave it a pass on the DS & 3DS because whatever, still just dedicated handhelds, fine. They could've done a lot more, but we were just happy to get 3D models. But at this point, GF & TPC need to be satisfied with "only" making BILLIONS of dollars...and should outright triple the development team & their resources, even if that costs them several million dollars off their BILLIONS they'll still make either way.

Anthony Varela yeah true. But the point of improving quality is customer retention and customer satisfaction. There are definitely fans who won’t buy this game because of all of these issues. Also, i bought the game and am enjoying it but am not happy with graphics and the animation. It doesn’t affect the experience too much for me. For someone else, it might put them off of the game and keep them from buying more products

Jokes aside, yeah... Even if this game sells well, I don't think the next one will. Small children playing this as their first interaction with Pokémon will find it to be boring. They might not even fully understand that the moves Pokémon are doing are supposed to be representing physical attacks. Teen to adult new players will wonder why anyone was ever a big Pokémon fan in the first place. Lastly, long time fans are starting to lose the rose tint in their goggles. The sales figures will look promising, but the trend will be downward.

@@SnooDoodle My first playthrough as a little kid was with Machop and Treecko and for the love of God it was literally impossible to beat Rayquaza. I remember the birds as tough enemies, but holy fuck Rayquaza. I had to restart the game to pick another starters because it was driving me crazy.
What you explored is like two thirds of the wild area. There isn't much to it. And the handholding never stops.

I love how every npc you talk to heals your party. Two steps through some tall grass and Hop is all: 'Quick, let's get your hp topped up. That one battle against a level 2 Pokémon must have really taken it out of you!'
That maybe happens twice at the start of the game. from then on, no one really heals your party anymore except after gym battles.

The tutorial isn't really an issue in this game at all. You can tell the other characters early on that you already understand things and that skips a LOT of stuff.
If you catch a pokemon before route 2 (and there are like 7 pokemon on route 1 so you probably will) then there isn't a catching tutorial either

You act like the "tutorial" are always super long. They never are, there is always only a short moment where they show you how to catch a pokemon and that's it. Nowhere do they show you how to battle like in other games.

If someone says that looks bad, the natural response would be to try and make it look better (just like the Sonic movie did). Being constructive usually requires an answer on how to solve the problem but something like this doesn't need that.
