Fact is for me I didn't want to leave and go far away from home. I kinda was scared to go to college becuz I didn't know what I wanted to do. We have to reach black boys at the elementary level within the educational system so that they have an idea what college is like. For example, take them to colleges in their early years. Have symposiums for parents to talk to their children about college.
It should start in pre-K. You'd be surprised how many parents don't enroll their kids in pre-K and then when they start elementary school, they're already behind.
It does start in elementary and a lot of the boys are fine. It’s middle school where they get lost. That’s because black male culture starts to seep in.

As a student presently enrolled in a Community College my assessment is not the program but the activity that is conducted on the campuses. Black men are reporting the inappropriate activity but it is ignored by the staff. There has been correspondence between the administration, and I am told we have a long list of legal complaints which the USDE should step in address these issues with administration because calling campus police on students that is African American should be considered retaliation for witness intimidation and obstruction. The Civil Rights Act enacted by our federal courts should protect students.
You would see the same issue if you looked at black women attaining trades. It’s declining. Black men preferred trades over college, because it pays more money to have a trade in construction than a degree in communications
I understand the data. This isn't new for black boys and men. Many of the things he mentioned are things Black girls and women experience, but still attain education. I venture to say it's because culturally we don't give black girls excuses. We blame them when they fail or fall short. Well im a black man I’m 28, I did do a stint at community college, but it really didn’t go anywhere so I just went to work……and yes my parents were bothered because they felt I was dragging on and not being serious about a career, lots of petty ass arguments with my dad But last year in March 2022, I started my own business. And I been on the journey since, a rough ride learning things and costly mistakes on my own, i at least was blessed to be connected to our black mechanic who mentor me a lot in business. NOW do I wish I had gone to a real college and pursued a dream job with a Fortune 500 company…..yeah I think about that sometimes but my business is my everything my mom actually told me to my face that she’s glad I didn’t go to college.

Plenty of black men do fine in school……I just didn’t have the dream of a doctor, lawyer or software engineer, I didn’t play football or anything so I was very lost, my guidance counselor was no help. 2. My freind went to a high school in suburban Tampa an he said they had iPads, computer courses, robotics, Ivy League courses, I mean they had it! And I was shocked because my high school in the urban part of Tampa didn’t have any of that.

I graduated with a PhD with only 35k in debt. It took sacrifice and perseverance, but the body count back home kept me focused.
